[Bug 369587] Re: Totem (Ubuntu 9.04 i386) has poor audio playback while playing video.

2009-05-08 Thread guymac
I also have a Dell B130 laptop and MP3's skip occasionally with Totem.
It is much worse with VLC. It happens when there is some other heavy
i/o, e.g. the 'deferred triggers' stage of a package install.

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-05-08 Thread Kurt De Smet
Hi Lucas,

I noticed everything goes fine until the memory gets full, then starts
the swapping and the slowdown. It's like the memory is used as buffer,
when that runs out it uses the virtual memory on the HD. No problem with
small sizes that fit the memory but when you select 100 GB at once ...
then the HD starts writing to itself fairly rapidly. When AHCI was
enabled the memory gets used to but strangely enough it does not use the
virtual memory (NCQ?). As you stated the NCQ may prevents the HD from
playing with itself. It may not be the main problem (that's why I didn't
file a bug) but I'm fairly sure some people have IDE selected or only
have IDE in their BIOS. I only thought it was worth mentioning how I
solved my problem because I read very similar stories to mine here. It
could be good to know if they are using a PATA or SATA drive as source.
Once you filter those out you can narrow down to the real problem.

[Bug 373574] [NEW] Movie Player hangs after playing for a few seconds

2009-05-08 Thread SteveS
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Ubuntu 8.04 powerpc. Totem Movie Player. Alsa v.19

Up until the system update of 5 May 2009 totem worked fine. Following
this update totem and vlc both hang after a variable number of seconds
of playing.

This is similar to what happens on a powerpc when 8.04 + alsa is first
installed and was solved up to this point by installing alsa v.19.
(known bug in alsa v.15, fixed in v.16)

I re-installed the latest version of alsa but to no avail.

If I re-boot and choose the boot option old instead of Linux then the
system works fine.

[Bug 366410] Re: nautilus-sendto suggests thunderbird and claims in description to handle it, but the plugin is missing

2009-05-08 Thread Chris Schoonbee
** Description changed:

just upgraded to jaunty, can we have this plugin back please...?
+
+ Fix / Work-around
+ ---
+ Just to make things clear for people who see the same bug and get confused -
you *can* send files using Thunderbird.
+ Although the Send To menu shows Email (Evolution) even though Thunderbird
may be set as the Gnome default email program, if you click Send, your default
email program will be opened to compose the email.
+
+ It seems that this version of nautilus-sendto had had the name
+ Evolution hardcoded into the menu or something - at any rate the
+ confusing menu will be fixed in Karma.

[Bug 373599] [NEW] When saving directly to FTP, %s is not a valid location

2009-05-08 Thread Jonathan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I am using the British English version of gedit.

When I am trying to save files using FTP over gnome-vfs, it fails with
the message %s is not a valid location. Please check that you typed the
location correctly and try again.

This appears to be a problem associated with the translation of the
program, but oddly SFTP works fine and saves files as usual.

[Bug 373574] Re: Movie Player hangs after playing for a few seconds

2009-05-08 Thread SteveS

Sorry guys, my fault, this is not a bug but I could not find a way of
cancelling the bug report.

With the kernel upgrade to 24-24 the alsa version was reset to v.15
(ubuntu standard)

Because I ran the alsa update to v.19 after the kernel upgrade but
before rebooting it picked up kernel version 24-23 (which explains why
the boot old worked).

Have now upgraded alsa to v.19 using kernel 24-24 and the problem has
been solved.

Please feel free to cancel this report if you wish.

I think this should be reported upstream to poppler, so that this improvement
could be made also to other tools, like pdfinfo for example.

do you have any issue with the rendering or is that just the label in
the details dialog which is your issue? how useful is that information?
that's seems really a tiny detail and should be sent upstream by

[Bug 373620] Re: help in sound record crashes

2009-05-08 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 373547] [NEW] Qosmio g40 -No Sound through speakers / headphones work.

2009-05-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

I'm not sure if I'm reporting this in the right section...
if not, please let me know.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on my Qosmio g40 Laptop.
Everything works well, except there's no sound from the laptop's speakers (4
speakers + a subwoofer).
The headphones DO work.

The laptop has Realtek alc262 as one of the sound options.
On Windows Vista, the sound driver is: Realtek Audio Driver v.6-
On Windows 7, the sound is automatically detected.

I get this error in sound preferences when I try to switch sound playback:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback.

I've posted the same problem on the Mandriva Forums, without success:
http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?p=671239#671239

A recap of some of the things I've tried:
-Disabling Pulseaudio
-Reinstalling ALSA
-Realtek's Linux Driver
-Different Sound Preference settings
-Creating a new user
-Logging in as root
-Adjusting Pulseaudio Preferences
-Alsaconf
-Alsamixer / unmuting
-AUMIX, KMIX, etc.
-and a bunch of other tutorial stuff I found online.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

[Bug 373630] [NEW] Crash when trying to accept a call that has already been hang up from the other side

2009-05-08 Thread Herbie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

There's a Problem in Ekiga that the software crashes (reproducibly,
details below) when running the following steps:

1. Starting Ekiga, logging in to the SIP provider.
2. Using a normal phone to call the telephone net number of my account.
3. When the window notifying me about a call pops up, I hang-up using the
normal phone.
4. Then, with the window still open (see screenshot) I click accept and ekiga
crashes.

After the fourth step, the following information is visible on the terminal
from which ekiga has been started:
-
assert.cxx(108) PWLib Assertion fail: Null pointer reference, file
/usr/include/ptlib/safecoll.h, line 703, Error=11
Assertion fail: Null pointer reference, file /usr/include/ptlib/safecoll.h,
line 703, Error=11

Abort, Core dump?

The problem exists on Ubuntu Jaunty, ekiga 3.2.0-0ubuntu1, libpt
2.6.1-0ubuntu4.

[Bug 145152] Re: [gutsy] Pictures folder shows all pictures in $HOME

2009-05-08 Thread ricardisimo
I hope it's not too late to comment on this. I'm on Jaunty. I wandered
back to my computer at work the other day to find it flashing scans of
cleared checks, the member roster from my union Local, and member tax
forms. Not cool.

These are scans, which are pictures, which is why I saved them in my
Pictures folder. Is there a way either to remove Pictures Folder
from gnome-screensaver, or limit it to tagged pictures, as the F-Spot
screensaver is limited to tagged Favorites.

Aside from sensitive financial records, what if I want to have naked
pictures of Salma Hayek - or better yet Barrack Obama - in my Pictures
folder, but I don't want my co-workers seeing them? I can probably edit
hidden config files, but the average newbie who sets his/her screensaver
to randomize won't know that it's going to happen ahead of time, and
won't know how to fix it after the fact.

To Ted's point, this isn't really a bug, it's how it is supposed to
work. So can I make this a feature request instead of a bug report?
Either modify Pictures Folder so as to guarantee users' privacy, or
remove it from gnome-screensaver. Thank you.

[Bug 373445] Re: Detect PDF/A document

2009-05-08 Thread Davide Capodaglio
No I don't have any rendering issue.
But PDF/A has become an international standard for the long-term archiving of
electronic documents (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDF/A).
For example in Italy this format is required by many public organizations
(Trade Bureau and many others).
So it's important to know when a document is conforming to the standard, and
knowing that it is a PDF-1.4 is too generic.

Moreover, it should be simple to determine the PDF/A compliance, since the PDF
contains a special metadata for this.
If you open the attached PDF with a simple text editor, you can find this:

[Bug 373413] Re: sound-juicer crashed when trying to extract title with bad caracter set

[Bug 363236] Re: Thunderbird does not appear in right-click send to

2009-05-08 Thread strange_cathect
Sebastien,

Hm, I think there is actually more than just the naming here. Send to is
only opening a Thunderbird email if I enter an address in the field
Send to:

To reproduce:

1. Right click on a file.
2. Select Email (Evolution) from drop box.
3. Click Send.

The result is that nothing happens; the dialog box just disappears and
Thunderbird does not open.

However, if *any* data is placed in the Send to: field, things work
perfectly and Thunderbird opens with the file attached to a new email.

[Bug 373652] [NEW] Can't burn the DVD

2009-05-08 Thread alf889
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

The children of this directory will have 6 parent directories. This is a
violation of the ISO9660 standard which only allows 6. Brasero can
create an image of such a file hierarchy and burn it; but the media may
not be readable on all operating systems.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/brasero
Package: brasero 0.8.2-0ubuntu1
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
 LANG=en_AU.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: brasero
Uname: Linux 2.6.27-11-generic i686

 Some clue ?

I don't know what it means but the command 'apt-cache policy packagename '
 returns that packagename doesn't exit

No, it was just stated in #totem channel by a developer. I didn't find

2009-05-08 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
No, it means apply it to (a) any newly-created user account and (b) the
login screen. That's hard to explain in the confines of a button.

It would be nice if the authentication alert was able to explain this in
more detail.

[Bug 373260] [NEW] ~/.Xmodmap does not get loaded

2009-05-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

~/.Xmodmap does not get loaded on Ubuntu 9.04 and Kubuntu 9.04. The same
.Xmodmap files used to work on Ubuntu 8.10. I guess this is not the same
as Bug #366045 because it appeared in 9.04.

When manually executing 'xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap' the key mappings get loaded
properly.

[Bug 373630] Re: Crash when trying to accept a call that has already been hang up from the other side

2009-05-08 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-
file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where
_my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
