up in the middle of a TV show. I want the screen either on, or off. Save
some electricity and let your monitor go blank, sleep, or off. If you like a
certain screen saver that much, you can install the stuff needed to make it
work right. Linux is all about messing with things anyways.

Who cares about diverging from Gnome upstream in this? Don't we diverge

I wonder if a solution would be thus:

Leave the screensaver config program alone, but create an additional
program that edits a particular .desktop file. A user simply sets their
screensaver to this special one, and uses this hypothetical tool to
configure the screensaver as they actually like. gnome-screensaver need
not know of this at all.

2009-06-17 Thread Irios
But *WHY* do we have to run around in rings to do something that should be
simple, just not to miff inoperative upstream maintenance. Let's DIVERGE if
we want something good, while upstrem pushes something bad.

Really, the screensaver is not important. Fine, then, let's fix it too,
because this Ubuntu Papercuts program is for fixing unimportant things that
are badly done and are pebbles in the sandal on the road to a totally smooth
user experience. And it should be a very simple fix, it is not as we're
trying to reimplement the window manager (which has been done for the
Netbook Release).

Leave the screensaver config program alone, but create an additional
program that edits a particular .desktop file. A user simply sets their
screensaver to this special one, and uses this hypothetical tool to
configure the screensaver as they actually like. gnome-screensaver need
not know of this at all.

[Bug 388289] [NEW] gtkfilechooser save/save as dialog not 100% navigable by keyboard

[Bug 388293] [NEW] evince crashed on double-click (to select word)

2009-06-17 Thread Umang
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Hi,
When I am reading a PDF, and I double-click the words to select them
(habitually). When I do this many times, sometimes evince crashes.

This happens only a few times a month (sometimes never). I have not been
able to open from terminal and see if there is any error. I cannot
reproduce this bug at the moment.

Though it happens very very rarely, it is very irritating. (I don't
remember whether all the other evince windows closed or not, I think
they did)

What should I do and how do I go about giving more information on this
bug?

Evince : 2.24.1-0ubuntu1

[Bug 388302] [NEW] Saved .glade file reopens with incorrect widget sizes

2009-06-17 Thread Vishnu Nambiar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: glade-3

First, create a .glade XML file, and the widgets within the file are set
at a certain size (a button set to 200x200 for example). Save it.

When the .glade file is reopened, the size of the widgets are reset to

The size will return to the correct value once the widget is focused
upon (clicked), but this only works for the first widget. The rest of

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2009-06-17 Thread unggnu
Yeah, it should.

Am I the only one which finds the statement the bug there doesn't quality as
an hundredpapercut issue, those should be quick to fix issue which is not the
case of this one quite ironical?
I mean we are not talking about the heavy lagging of Linux under IO or cpu load
just about a panel bar. But marketing seems to be more important.

Re: [Bug 280480] Re: Sharing Icons don't show except for Downloads folder

 Hi all

Sorry my intermission, but i already fixed the write option issue in the

Thanks for your efforts, but I've already fixed that part in the
nautilus-share git packaging repository for Debian (I prefer the use of
strstr, because Everyone:R/F can appear anywhere in the string) and
was poking around with the emblem issue for the past few hours.

The results of my tests were that the bug cannot be fixed in
nautilus-share, but resides in the nautilus extensions interface code.
Specifically, the Nautilus Info Provider interface calls the function
provided by an extension for all files/directories except the XDG
standard directories, i.e. Documents, Music, Pictures, etc. If this is
fixed in Nautilus, then the emblem issue would automatically be fixed
without any change in nautilus-share code.

[Bug 372089] Re: Evolution mail dont save password keeps asking

2009-06-17 Thread Rocky Road
Hi,

It's over a couple a weeks I have this bug (or the more ancient [#245589]) too.
Since I have many mail accounts (pop and imap) in evolution, with all different
passwords which I don't all remember, it's getting really a pain to re-enter
them several times a day ...

I got the impression that any network problem (client or server side) causes
evolution to pop up for password on any account it was about to check.
If you cancel the dialog, the password is like invalidated until you actually
re-enter it.

I'm running evolution 2.26.1 with Ubuntu 9.04.

[Bug 243229] Re: Video plays really slow

2009-06-17 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I had the same problem, incredibly slow playback in totem. I had two
apps loaded which both use xine backends (note I wasn't trying to play
them both at the same time, just had them loaded), totem was using the
xine backend to play video, and amarok was using xine for audio. So I
looked in ~/.xine/config and tried setting audio.driver:pulseaudio, it
worked - not only can both apps be loaded simultaneously, I can even
play both at the same time.

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-06-17 Thread Alan
i agress that something needs to be done with the default view of nautilus.
on a 1280x800 laptop screen, the toolbars are taking up a lot of screen real
estate.

one other thing that i've noticed thunar has that nautilus doesn't is the used
space of the viewed folder in the status bar.
I was going to log this as a seperate request, but think it will be worth
bundling this with the overall look of nautilus.

The same problem here. I can't see what I'm typing when connected to another
desktop via Remote Desktop Viewer 2.26.1. In order to see what I have typed I
have to close connection and connect again. I also cannot drag windows.
The keyboard works technicaly, because after reconnect I can see what I have

Re: [Bug 387949] Re: alt - tab key combo doesn't work - toggle through open apps

2009-06-17 Thread Budly
Thanks for the prompt response.

1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter
the problem,
Firefox and Evolution are open

2. the behavior you expected, and
By holding down the ALT key and pressing the TAB key, a window should
pop up and allow me to toggle between the programs.

3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as
possible).
nothing happens. It did toggle in Ubuntu v8. It does toggle on Macs and
PC's, but in Ubuntu 9.04, the ALT - TAB combo doesn't work. Also,
opening more programs should allow for more toggle choices.

Hope this helps,

Budly

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on deb3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as
much detail as possible).ugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 388372] [NEW] Result of Leave a message has UI warts

2009-06-17 Thread Max Bowsher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

The result of gnome-screensaver's Leave a message has multiple UI
warts.

1) OK and Cancel buttons, which both simply dismiss the dialog.

2) No indication what the dialog is actually telling you. If the person
leaving the message was not especially verbose, it's quite inexplicable
why the dialog is appearing, unless you're already aware of the feature.
It should begin the dialog with something along the lines of At TIME
a person left a message for you via the screensaver:.

[Bug 382703] Re: Home Folder has 3 different names

2009-06-17 Thread Alan Pope
Given no other bookmarks under Places have 'folder' appended to them,
why should 'home' ?

If I'm articulating to someone how to find their home folder or answer
the question Where's my stuff?, then saying Click places, then home
sounds logical and succinct. By clicking 'Places' I'm saying I want to
'go to a place', and that 'place' might well be home. Makes sense in my
head anyway. :)

If we _did_ add 'folder' to home then by extension surely all the
bookmarks under Places should also get the added suffix. That would
bloat the places menu width-wise and look very messy.

[Bug 387895] Re: nautilus i deleted 8/9 of my harddisk - read why!

2009-06-17 Thread Steffen Banhardt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. I can't reproduce this - if I try to send a mouted usb device to trash
in nautilus it doesnt allow this. So please answer these questions:
1. Is this reproducible?
2. If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug? Be as
detailed as possible. What file system uses the device you had problems with? I
assume it may be NTFS.
3. What error messages appear?
This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Btw: why sould putting something in the trash umount a device? it should
delete files, like a trash is supposed to do.

[Bug 280480] Re: Sharing Icons don't show except for Downloads folder

2009-06-17 Thread Philip Morrell
Ok, drifting into the area of speculation here: I seem to remember
reading somewhere that there's a package (or even just a util) that
deals with the naming of these base folders for internationalisation
reasons (if you login with a new language, it'll dynamically rename the
folders to account for this change). Could this perhaps be affecting
the issue at all, as it's another base-folder specific manipulation
tool. If not, no worries, it was just speculation, though you seem to
have identified exactly where the issue is.

[Bug 385914] Re: Brasero fails to write audio CD

2009-06-17 Thread pvsage
Also minor detail...the report a problem window says apport instead
of report

That is correct - the bug report package is named apport. I'm not sure
if it was intentionally named after a phenomenon commonly associated
with paranormal activity; one could argue that bugs are not outside of
the norm in Ubuntu.

I guess I'll have to try another USB burner and see if that cooperates
any better...could be an incompatibility between my netbook's USB hub
controller and the GSA-T40N...which would be odd, considering this
optical device is allegedly designed for Dell.

[Bug 388416] [NEW] desktop background gets unset after removing the original file

2009-06-17 Thread Toni Ruottu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I'm able to change the background picture, but it gets unset as soon as I trash
the original image file that I used for setting the background image.

Steps to reproduce:
1. download an image from the internet to Desktop
2. right click on desktop and select Change Desktop Background
3. drag and drop the image from Desktop into the background selector
4. right click the image file on Desktop and select Move to Trash

Actual results:
My background gets set to the image but once I trash the file, background gets
unset again. It also disappears from the background selector making it
impossible to select it again.

Expected results:
I'd expect the background to remain as I explicitly told I want it to be.
Showing the image I originally downloaded from the Internet in step 1.

It happens every time.

I assume forcing people to keep an image file on their desktop is not
intentional.

If I'm articulating to someone how to find their home folder or answer
the question Where's my stuff?, then saying Click places, then home
 sounds logical and succinct.

This applies to the English localizations nicely, what about languages
in which home doesn't translate well?

[Bug 242013] Re: First Import Folder reports Operation not supported

LTS just means that it has a longer amount of time where it is
considered for security fixes and major bug fixes. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates for the criteria for
updates. As far as I know, the same criteria apply to LTS as normal
already-released code. Just a matter of how long they get attention.

2009-06-17 Thread Ante Karamatić
Alan Pope wrote:

I understand your logic and ti does make sense... in English :)

I doubt 'Homme' in French makes sense. Home is a house, flat, not a
directory on a computer (which is inside of a home). 'Kuća' in Croatian
is also very... I said it already :)

There's also Spanish. Casa? And if you think for a second, it's not that
smart in English too. It's just that we got used to it calling it home.

In you example, 'Where's my stuff?', you could easily say 'Click Places,
then click My-Super-Cool-Folder' and it would still have the same effect
as calling it Home/Flat/World. That's cause you didn't answer to the
question, you explained the steps to the solution. Real world answers
would be:

'In your home folder/directory.'
'In your home.'
'In your personal folder/directory.'

Which one of those sounds most reasonable?
