Re: [Bug 44058] Re: suspend when closing laptop lid doesn't work
Confirm. There is no difference how to setup gnome-power-manager, LID action doesn't work. (Asus F3JA) No, When i close my lid, the screen does not even blank. All the settings are correct. This isn't a settings issue. Adrian 2009/6/29 Jonathan jnn...@gmail.com I thought I had this problem, but then I realised: System-Preferences-Power Management The default when on AC Power is for a lid close to blank the screen. Perhaps this default should be changed to suspend? [Bug 392716] Re: notification area applets crash on login
@maresh no, there are no hardcoded dependencies beyond the basic boot setup, as long as the fis partitioning is the same and initramfs is used as explained above there should be no issues. your description sounds like a race between kernel and hardware (timing issue) ... my theory would be that the kernel gets confused because HW is still initializing which makes some essential underlying service like udev fail (which in ubuntu is very closely bound to the kernel we use since we are always using the latest upstream here) ... which in turn might cause a service the applets need to fail (hal/dbus etc) ... can you compare (and probably attach) the kernels dmesg output from a boot with the function in place and one without the function in place ? @alan one easy way is to just put the keyword text on the kernel commandline so you get a textboot and can start gdm manually with the initscript (or just call startx and attach gdb from a different tty to the process you want to debug)... given that the whole issue looks rather like an infrastructural problem here rather than something with the applets themselves i cant tell you where to attach gdb to though, we should work our way through the stack layer by layer to see what part of the backend is exactly failing ... i would still be curious how you get a MAC address in your setup, we didnt see one and didnt get an IP durung our tests, the output of ifconfig after boot, but before a network cable is plugged in on your system would be intresting... -- notification area applets crash on login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392716 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly
Loading thumbnails is only sluggish if you want a preview of the images. You can switch that off under edit preferences preview. Then you get to see the respective icons instantly. Even if it takes time to load the previews, you can browse the file manager, while the previews are loading, because the icons of the respective files are instantly visible. The icons are gradually exchanged by the previews. So that doesn't hinder you from navigating through the files. If you're opening a folder with thousands of files, you could also choose list view or compact view, which loads much quicker and is easier to navigate. So there are plenty workarounds at the moment Make customizable panel with minimalistic default arrangement. That would be satisfactory in this direction of discussion... I completely agree with this approach. This is how it should be done. The default GUI should be minimalistic, such that the novice or casual user may easily understand it. Power users or users with specific needs and wishes should have the option to customize the interface according to their needs. There is no single solution that fits everybody. [Bug 393158] Re: Incoherent warning message when inserting a forbidden symbol in filename
** Description changed: When the user types a filename, if he puts a forbidden symbol (like / for example) in the name, when clicking on the Save button there's a really obscure message coming out: instead of saying one or more character you have typed are not admitted , or the symbol / is not admitted in a file name, it says (approximately, I'm translating from the italian version) THE FOLDER'S CONTENT CANNOT BE VISUALIZED: error in executing stat of file /home/john/Desktop/xx : no file or directory. - I tried with Openoffice.org, Gedit, Archive manager, Brasero, Sound recorder and Gimp, and they all have the same behaviour. The only one to give the correct response has been Nautilus which told me that / is not allowed. + I tried with Openoffice.org, Gedit, Archive manager, Brasero, Sound recorder and Gimp, and they all have the same behaviour. The only one to give the correct response has been Nautilus which told me that / is not allowed. I made the tests on two PCs, both running Jaunty. However, my opinion is that the message that shows when the typed path is incorrect is not useful for those who don't already know the mechanism: that would consequently compromise usability. I think it would be useful to replace the present message with something like The path you have typed is not correct: please check the directory tree , or The / symbol can be only used to head to a subdirectory, not in a filename: if you wanted to set a subdirectory for your file, please check the directory tree. I think this is very confusing for the newcomer: if it's easily fixable, it should be fixed in Karmic. -- Incoherent warning message when inserting a forbidden symbol in filename https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/393158 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

fwiw I think this bug is indeed Invalid. [Bug 393854] [NEW] Update PAM policy to allow password-less logins set up via users-admin
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm Upstream gnome-system-tools will have in 2.28 an option to allow specified users to log in graphically and locally without entering their password. This is intended for home users that can't use GDM's autologin because they are several on the same computer. A rationale is at: http://markmail.org/message/2h5isyf3kip6updb#query:gdm%20passwordless+page:1+mid:pa6lrzmwdtbol5it+state:results and the bug upstream was http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=414862 For this to work in Ubuntu, we need to add a rule to the PAM configuration file: auth sufficient pam_succeed_if.so user ingroup nopasswdlogin And to create the group 'nopasswdlogin' in the postinstall script. Attached is a debdiff that does that. I guess somebody familiar with Ubuntu's PAM rules should check it since that's a critical part of the system's security, but that way of achieving this has been accepted by Brian Cameron (GDM) and Carlos Garnacho (gnome-system-tools) as safe, and many users has been using this as a hack for some time. This change should also affect gnome-screensaver so that the screen is not locked after suspend. I'll post a diff for that too, and for the gdm-new package. Please ask if you need more explanations about how this works. ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Update PAM policy to allow password-less logins set up via users-admin https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/393854 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 150187] Re: Evince has very bad quality when printing pdf files.
I have downloaded the PDF and tried evince in Karmic. I printed into a PDF file with the Print to file functionality of evince, so it is really evince and not the CUPS filter chain. Pages 1 and 4 get completely bitmapped whereas pages 2 and 3 are treated correctly as text and vector graphics. It seems that page 2 and 3 contain something which makes Poppler bitmap the whole page. Seems that there is some little item inside which Poppler cannot treat as vector graphics and therefore Poppler bitmaps the whole page. -- Evince has very bad quality when printing pdf files. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/150187 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to poppler in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 95853] Re: Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before deleting files in Nautilus
The working undo feature is the trash bin! You could pop up a notification, which disappears automatically, saying: You have just deleted..., you can recover it from the trash bin. Once people get used to this, they will not pay any attention to the notification, but at least it doesn't distract your workflow. Then someone will want a louder and larger notification, possibly an emergency siren, a nuclear bomb, or a collapsing star. Once they get used to that, people won't bother to listen to or look at it anymore, . it's a vicious circle, it just doesn't work. In conclusion, people are responsible for what they do and if you empty your garbage bin without checking the content, then that's your fault, take the blame! You did it even though you were explicitly warned! This notification didn't work, so why should an additional notification make a difference? How many warnings do you need? I would like to have the option not to have this notification pop up in the future, because I know what the garbage bin is for. I took a rootfs with GNOME I had prepared for Babbage 2 which was working fine there, moved that to Babbage 1; it's on a SATA disk which I plug via an USB adapter. I could boot this using the new RedBoot attached to this bug report (candidate 200925 I guess) and it would trigger the described errors. I then overwrote RedBoot with the 200918 version, and I got exactly the same issue. The only difference in dmesg between the boots was in timing of some device detections and an e2fsck line because the first boot triggerred an fsck. [Bug 95853] Re: Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before deleting files in Nautilus
@kikl: the trash bin is not the same as an undo. Even if it provides the same functionality, it is by far much more complex to use than a single key-press (Ctrl-z). Also last time I checked the trash bin didn't have a way to restore files to the same place they were deleted (like Windows trash bin does). Compare these two workflows: - user presses Del key by mistake. Files are moved to trash. - open the trash bin. - remember which files where selected when the mistake was made, and find them in the trash bin. - select files. - move the deleted files back to the folder (supposing the user did notice the mistake and didn't close the window) vs - user presses Del key by mistake. Files are moved to trash, and a prominent but unobtrusive message notifies the operation. - user presses Undo. The files are restored. Undo function Just Works(tm). It can be safely ignored in normal workflow, but it's just one click away when you notice you've made an error. -- Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before deleting files in Nautilus https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/95853 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
