Re: [Bug 44058] Re: suspend when closing laptop lid doesn't work

2009-06-30 Thread Vasily Shmelev
Confirm. There is no difference how to setup gnome-power-manager, LID
action doesn't work. (Asus F3JA)

 No,

When i close my lid, the screen does not even blank. All the settings are
 correct.

 This isn't a settings issue.

I thought I had this problem, but then I realised:

 System-Preferences-Power Management

The default when on AC Power is for a lid close to blank the screen.

Perhaps this default should be changed to suspend?

In any case, changing it to suspend worked for me - the laptop now
suspends when the lid is closed.

When manually choosing for suspend (through System - Logout), this works
fine (although I keep getting the logout window when I resume, but that

It makes no difference If I'm on AC or on batteries.

[Bug 393659] Re: nautilus crashes viewing circular symlinks

2009-06-30 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-30 Thread matthias
There are numerous ways to make it easier to edit the file name, which are less
intrusive than the slow-double-click way. The most straight forward would be:
- add a Button to open the file preferences dialog in the icon bar below the
menu. The file name is selected by default already. Since copying and pasting
are probably more common operations, one might argue to add buttons for that as
well.

What would average users say after switching from windows, where there

becomes sluggish while loading them? Athlon 3000+, 1GB RAM; Core Duo
1,6, 1GB RAM - not top, but still not bad. But loading thumbnails in

Yes. This is definitely a problem. I hate it when Nautilus is slow to
respond. The thumbnail loading must be fixed.

If there is not yet a bug report regarding it then maybe you could open
a new one if you are able to repeat this problem in a reliable manner?
If there some kind of benchmark folder of thousand jpegs which can be
compared across Linux distributions, KDE, GNOME and Windows, the
developers can precise feedback so that can work to improve this
feature.

Not sure where you read that. I worked quite a lot on the code

On my screen, with 128 pixels per inch, the 8 setting is pretty good.
If I create monospace text in Firefox at 8pt or the equivalent 14.2px,

Right. So no unit == point ;).

[Bug 392716] Re: notification area applets crash on login

2009-06-30 Thread Oliver Grawert
@maresh
no, there are no hardcoded dependencies beyond the basic boot setup, as long as
the fis partitioning is the same and initramfs is used as explained above there
should be no issues.

your description sounds like a race between kernel and hardware (timing issue)
...
my theory would be that the kernel gets confused because HW is still
initializing which makes some essential underlying service like udev fail
(which in ubuntu is very closely bound to the kernel we use since we are always
using the latest upstream here) ...
which in turn might cause a service the applets need to fail (hal/dbus etc) ...
can you compare (and probably attach) the kernels dmesg output from a boot with
the function in place and one without the function in place ?

@alan
one easy way is to just put the keyword text on the kernel commandline so you
get a textboot and can start gdm manually with the initscript (or just call
startx and attach gdb from a different tty to the process you want to debug)...
given that the whole issue looks rather like an infrastructural problem here
rather than something with the applets themselves i cant tell you where to
attach gdb to though, we should work our way through the stack layer by layer
to see what part of the backend is exactly failing ...

i would still be curious how you get a MAC address in your setup, we
didnt see one and didnt get an IP durung our tests, the output of
ifconfig after boot, but before a network cable is plugged in on your
system would be intresting...

[Bug 369498] Re: 32bits gtk and glib modules not found in ia32-libs

2009-06-30 Thread smanaz
i'm trying to explain better:

acroread works fine in both situationuser and root.

as root acrobat starts in the correct way, but as user it gives to me
the error message:

Gtk-Message: Failed to load module canberra-gtk-module:

/usr/lib/gio/modules/libgiogconf.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
Failed to load module: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgiogconf.so

but after the license confirmation it works fine.
from firefox is the same, if i'm trying to oper a pdf file acrobat ask to me to
confirm the license. The strange thing is that:
every time i oper acrobat from user i have to confirm the licence as the first
time, but it works.

So the problem in my opinion is a grant permission problem because from user
there is no error message.
Is there someone that has the same problem?
Can you try to open acroread from root?
Can someone confirm this kind of bug?
Best regards.

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-06-30 Thread kikl
Loading thumbnails is only sluggish if you want a preview of the images.
You can switch that off under edit preferences preview. Then you get to
see the respective icons instantly. Even if it takes time to load the
previews, you can browse the file manager, while the previews are
loading, because the icons of the respective files are instantly
visible. The icons are gradually exchanged by the previews. So that
doesn't hinder you from navigating through the files. If you're opening
a folder with thousands of files, you could also choose list view or
compact view, which loads much quicker and is easier to navigate. So
there are plenty workarounds at the moment

Make customizable panel with minimalistic default arrangement. That
would be satisfactory in this direction of discussion...

I completely agree with this approach. This is how it should be done.
The default GUI should be minimalistic, such that the novice or casual
user may easily understand it. Power users or users with specific needs
and wishes should have the option to customize the interface according
to their needs. There is no single solution that fits everybody. If you
try to do that, you get a cluttered interface nobody likes.

[Bug 370541] Re: Jaunty's GDM Autologin doesn't work anymore

2009-06-30 Thread kjur
hi all.
i've had the same issue (jaunty xubuntu fresh installation with intel video
card).
it seems like paul's solution:
sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove
sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults
works perfect.
later after playing with gdm and configuration autologin stopped working again
and this helped another time.
btw. gdm default settings in rc.d is different than jaunty default settings.

[Bug 393158] Re: Incoherent warning message when inserting a forbidden symbol in filename

2009-06-30 Thread ale-sandro
** Description changed:

When the user types a filename, if he puts a forbidden symbol (like / for
example) in the name, when clicking on the Save button there's a really
obscure message coming out: instead of saying one or more character you have
typed are not admitted , or the symbol / is not admitted in a file name,
it says (approximately, I'm translating from the italian version) THE FOLDER'S
CONTENT CANNOT BE VISUALIZED: error in executing stat of file
/home/john/Desktop/xx : no file or directory.
- I tried with Openoffice.org, Gedit, Archive manager, Brasero, Sound recorder
and Gimp, and they all have the same behaviour. The only one to give the
correct response has been Nautilus which told me that / is not allowed.
+ I tried with Openoffice.org, Gedit, Archive manager, Brasero, Sound recorder
and Gimp, and they all have the same behaviour. The only one to give the
correct response has been Nautilus which told me that / is not allowed. I
made the tests on two PCs, both running Jaunty.

However, my opinion is that the message that shows when the typed path is
incorrect is not useful for those who don't already know the mechanism: that
would consequently compromise usability.
I think it would be useful to replace the present message with something like
The path you have typed is not correct: please check the directory tree , or
The / symbol can be only used to head to a subdirectory, not in a filename:
if you wanted to set a subdirectory for your file, please check the directory
tree.

I think this is very confusing for the newcomer: if it's easily fixable, it
should be fixed in Karmic.

2009-06-30 Thread Narendra D
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 15442 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15442

I dont think it is a duplicate of Bug #15442.

15442 refers to the interchange of the whole top and bottom panels when
moved from default position.

I am referring to just the position of the time/calendar and netmonitor
and other tray icons RELATIVE to each other next to the power button on
the Top panel.

I am using Jaunty X64 without any modifications to either the panels or
the whole desktop theme or icon sets.

Will attach both the screen shots when i get them.

[Bug 382379] Re: pdftops CUPS filter has several problems

I'm actually more concerned about also testing printers which work
fine in Jaunty. I can help out with a Samsung ML-1610, and I guess
Till can throw his armada of printers at it which he has at home, but
we should send out an extra call for testing in blogs and
 ubuntu-devel.

Everyday printing tasks (web pages, short letters, etc.) seem to work
fine on my ancient HP DeskJet 840C with Karmic. I never hit the multiple
page sizes problem, and I never got around to installing Jaunty, so I
can't specifically confirm that those problems are fixed, but FWIW I can
say that everything seems to work at least as well in Karmic as in
Hardy.

[Bug 150187] Re: Evince has very bad quality when printing pdf files.

2009-06-30 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
So, my mood is below my shoes for this bug, because it's in the most
important program for a scientist: the default pdf viewer. And it makes
absolutely necessary to install a proprietary program to do the most
basic activity people perceived doable with computers: printing, like
with typewriters. It's free knowledge, converted from a free format to
another free format, but I need a proprietary program to get a printout.

So please, can somebody help me understand if the cases above are the
same bug or not?

[Bug 393835] [NEW] Jaunty gdm binds to ipv6 udp only

2009-06-30 Thread Damiano
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

A fresh install of jaunty Ubuntu 9.04 results into gdm binding on ipv6
only

netstat -a shows
udp6   0  0 [::]:xdmcp  [::]:*

with kernel 2.6.28-13 it is not possible to disable ipv6 easily and I
need to connect to Ubuntu from a Windows machine (ipv4) using NX client
for windows.

It seems to me that this is not a duplicate of bug #162678 even if the summary
seems close enough.

I did try to find for a LISTEN directive for gdm, but it does not seems
to be there (at least on gdm.conf manual)

I hope I am being helpful.

[Bug 243596] Re: gnome-terminal scrollback leak

2009-06-30 Thread Chris Jones
fwiw I think this bug is indeed Invalid. The size of the heap is the
responsibility of glibc to manage and it appears (from what I've quickly turned
up with google) to not aggressively shrink heap sizes.
To show a memory leak you would need to run multiple iterations of the test in
tabs of the same gnome-terminal process and show that memory usage increases
each time. if you can run multiple iterations and the overall size remains
roughly constant then it is not a leak (to the best of my understanding of
these things, which is admitedly minimal).

[Bug 393854] [NEW] Update PAM policy to allow password-less logins set up via users-admin

2009-06-30 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Upstream gnome-system-tools will have in 2.28 an option to allow specified
users to log in graphically and locally without entering their password. This
is intended for home users that can't use GDM's autologin because they are
several on the same computer. A rationale is at:
http://markmail.org/message/2h5isyf3kip6updb#query:gdm%20passwordless+page:1+mid:pa6lrzmwdtbol5it+state:results
and the bug upstream was http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=414862

For this to work in Ubuntu, we need to add a rule to the PAM configuration file:
auth sufficient pam_succeed_if.so user ingroup nopasswdlogin

And to create the group 'nopasswdlogin' in the postinstall script.

Attached is a debdiff that does that. I guess somebody familiar with
Ubuntu's PAM rules should check it since that's a critical part of the
system's security, but that way of achieving this has been accepted by
Brian Cameron (GDM) and Carlos Garnacho (gnome-system-tools) as safe,
and many users has been using this as a hack for some time.

This change should also affect gnome-screensaver so that the screen is
not locked after suspend. I'll post a diff for that too, and for the
gdm-new package.

Please ask if you need more explanations about how this works.

[Bug 150187] Re: Evince has very bad quality when printing pdf files.

2009-06-30 Thread Till Kamppeter
I have downloaded the PDF and tried evince in Karmic. I printed into a
PDF file with the Print to file functionality of evince, so it is
really evince and not the CUPS filter chain. Pages 1 and 4 get
completely bitmapped whereas pages 2 and 3 are treated correctly as text
and vector graphics. It seems that page 2 and 3 contain something which
makes Poppler bitmap the whole page. Seems that there is some little
item inside which Poppler cannot treat as vector graphics and therefore
Poppler bitmaps the whole page.

 Binary package hint: nautilus

When booting into Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10, the desktop icons do not display
consistently. The icons I created on the desktop do not show up. This
happens on my desk and lap top computers (see specs below). If I logout and
back in the icons appear, sometimes. This is not affecting the upper and
lower panel icons, just the desktop. The background image is always correct.
If I set login for Xclient script I have the same problem. If I set default
to either Gnome or Xclient in System/Administration/ Login Window the
problem occurs. When I designate either one then login and specify that
setting it asks me do I want to make that the default, even though that is
what I have set it as. It does not matter whether it is Xclient or Gnome, it
 has this problem.

I get no replies from the forums regarding this issue. I have posted my
 situation several times.

The desktop was originally the beta Intrepid and I updated through the
final release. The Laptop was a clean install of Intrepid.

Any info you need? I do not know where to look in the system to correct
this lack of the setting sticking.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the
development release - Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you
could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next
release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release
at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. Thanks again and we appreciate your
 help.

2009-06-30 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
Thanks, do you think this is the same bug that seemed fixed or should I
open a new one? I guess the current bug had to do with fonts but I do
not understand very well all the connections between fonts, images and
so on in pdf.

Not sure where you read that.

From the link I posted.

Right. So no unit == point ;).

It does seem that way. :)

[Bug 95853] Re: Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before deleting files in Nautilus

2009-06-30 Thread kikl
The working undo feature is the trash bin! You could pop up a
notification, which disappears automatically, saying: You have just
deleted..., you can recover it from the trash bin. Once people get used
to this, they will not pay any attention to the notification, but at
least it doesn't distract your workflow.

Then someone will want a louder and larger notification, possibly an
emergency siren, a nuclear bomb, or a collapsing star. Once they get
used to that, people won't bother to listen to or look at it anymore,
. it's a vicious circle, it just doesn't work.

In conclusion, people are responsible for what they do and if you empty
your garbage bin without checking the content, then that's your fault,
take the blame! You did it even though you were explicitly warned! This
notification didn't work, so why should an additional notification make
a difference? How many warnings do you need?

I would like to have the option not to have this notification pop up in
the future, because I know what the garbage bin is for. Most people
migrating from microsoft know this anyhow.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 392716] Re: notification area applets crash on login

2009-06-30 Thread Loïc Minier
I took a rootfs with GNOME I had prepared for Babbage 2 which was
working fine there, moved that to Babbage 1; it's on a SATA disk which I
plug via an USB adapter. I could boot this using the new RedBoot
attached to this bug report (candidate 200925 I guess) and it would
trigger the described errors. I then overwrote RedBoot with the 200918
version, and I got exactly the same issue.

The only difference in dmesg between the boots was in timing of some
device detections and an e2fsck line because the first boot triggerred
an fsck.

Could you please tell me with which kernel you're testing? I tested
using a binary Babbage 2 kernel I got from FSL which seems to bring up
Babbage 1 fine (except above issues) including VGA port.

[Bug 95853] Re: Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before deleting files in Nautilus

2009-06-30 Thread Diego Moya
@kikl: the trash bin is not the same as an undo. Even if it provides the
same functionality, it is by far much more complex to use than a single
key-press (Ctrl-z).

Also last time I checked the trash bin didn't have a way to restore
files to the same place they were deleted (like Windows trash bin does).

Compare these two workflows:

- user presses Del key by mistake. Files are moved to trash.
- open the trash bin.
- remember which files where selected when the mistake was made, and find them
in the trash bin.
- select files.
- move the deleted files back to the folder (supposing the user did notice the
mistake and didn't close the window)

vs
- user presses Del key by mistake. Files are moved to trash, and a prominent
but unobtrusive message notifies the operation.
- user presses Undo. The files are restored.

Undo function Just Works(tm). It can be safely ignored in normal
workflow, but it's just one click away when you notice you've made an
error.
