I've always felt, particularly on 15 and 14 laptop screens that

How can we move this discussion beyond 'here's my preferences'? What's
the best way to approach user testing so this paper cut gets resolved?

[Bug 394582] [NEW] Mute volume multimedia key doesn't work

2009-07-02 Thread eld1e6o
Public bug reported:

I'm using ubuntu jaunty

If I press the multimedia key mute volume, the icon of pulse in the panel
changes and shows as muted, but it isn't.
Also, right clicking in the icon, 'silencio' (mute) is marked and the volume

the volume mutes

I tried to download the source of the package gnome-volume-control-pulse

[Bug 394592] [NEW] audio feedback doesn't always use two tones

2009-07-02 Thread DervishD
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

First of all, I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty, with gnome-control-center
1:2.26.0-0ubuntu3.

Second, I turned on the Audio feedback feature in Keyboard
preferences, namely the Beep when a toggle key is pressed. This
produces two different tones of beeps, one when the toggle key ends up
in the on state, another (lower pitched) when the toggle key ends up
in the off state.

The problem is that the CapsLock key uses the same, high pitched beep
for both states, so if you press it by accident you have to look for the
keyboard leds to check if the key is on or off. If you press another
toggle key (NumLock, for example), it produces the two different tones
AND makes the CapsLock key work again as usual with two beep tones and
not one.

Looks like the CapsLock key doesn't remember it's state in the audio
feedback code until another unrelated toggle key is used :??

What I expected to happen? Hearing a different pitched beep each time I
press CapsLock, the high pitched one when the key ends up on, the low
pitched one when the kay ends up off.

What happened instead? The high pitched beep is always heard no matter
toggle state, unless you use another toggle (I've tested with NumLock).
From then on, CapsLock also uses two tones.

To reproduce, from a fresh boot (CapsLock off, NumLock off):

- Press CapsLock: you hear the high pitch beep, indicating on state.
- Press CapsLock: you hear the high pitch beep again, indicating on, but the
key is now in the off position.
- Press CapsLock: you hear the high pitch beep again, this time the key is in
the on state.

This can be repeated ad nauseam and you always get the high pitch beep.

- Press NumLock: you hear the high pitch beep, the key goes to the on state.
- Press NumLock: you hear the LOW pitch beep, the key goes to the off state,
behaving correctly.

From now on, the CapsLock uses two tones and not one like before!

[Bug 23293] Re: Nautilus windows should close on unmount

2009-07-02 Thread Martin Emrich
Sebastien made a valid point (Although I would prefer for myself that
the windows just close automatically). How about this proposal:

When I unmount a volume, the right area of a nautilus window (with the
files) goes gray, with a message in the center like Please wait while
writing data to the device or The device is being prepared for
removal (for writable devices). After unmounting is complete, the
message changes to The device can now be safely removed (For non-
ejectable devices) or The CD-ROM/DVD-ROM/whatever has been ejected
with a Close window button below.

- The window would not disappear magically
- The Close window button is bigger than the little [X] and thus is easier to
hit, as in most cases this is what the user wants anyways.
- The status of the unmount process is displayed where the user probably had
the attention before: in the nautilus window. As unmounting a volume is in our
case triggered manually from within nautilus, I do not consider this a global
event to appear as a black notification bubble in the upper right corner.

Ciao

Martin

[Bug 394639] [NEW] video playing produces severe interference in addition on linux startup. This then clears when fully loaded - until I play a video - double image I think? I am using a Sony Trinit

2009-07-02 Thread George Urquhart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Ubuntu 9.04 Display Problem
Problem only seems to happen on two occasions:
1. On startup just after the initial logo - duplicate mouse cursors appears
side by side about 2 apart. The screen is black at this time but the second
cursor is paler and slightly fuzzy. This then clears when I enter the desktop -
but only because I changed the desktop to a single (MS Blue) colour. The
display from then on is fine and pin sharp with no problems whatsoever.
2. If, however, I try a video application (I've tried 2 programs) severe
interference results. The screen returns to normal as soon as I stop playing
the video. Again, the left-hand side off the video is almost clear, with the
right hand side completely distorted.
The packages I used were; VLC Media Player Movie Player
I am using a Sony Trinitron Display which I have been using under Windows XPPro
on this system for a number of years. Linux is now the only OS on the system
having replaced MS Windows.

I hope this is of some help to you. Many thanks.

Looks like the problem is not with CapsLock, but with the global state

Is this the intended behaviour?

[Bug 394654] [NEW] gconftool not present despite install gconf2

I just did a clean install of Karmic and tried to use gconftool to
change a setting and got the message:

When trying to run gconftool:
The program 'gconftool' is currently not installed. You can install it by
typing:

However, gconf2 is installed:

[Bug 389057] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in g_main_context_dispatch()

2009-07-02 Thread Jan Nieuwenhuizen
This is not evolution per se, it's the gtk+gnome file selector dialogue.

0x7f453b3778b1 in _gtk_entry_completion_popup (completion=0x7f45212df2d0)
at /build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.17.2/gtk/gtkentrycompletion.c:1491

As such it makes parts of the GNOME desktop largely unusable
so I suggest moving it to gtk+ and raising the priority of this bug.

I'm seeing this bug too (see attachment), but eg firefox has it too.
You need to type a file name which has multiple possible completions
(eg ~/000 if you have any GIT patches laying around).

Here's a sequence to crash evolution

cd
touch 0001
evolution --force-shutdown
evolution --component mail # wait for and focus it
C-n C-M

it crashes when attemting to type the fourth 0.

And here's how to crash firefox

cd
touch 0001
killall -9 firefox
firefox # wait for and focus it
C-o

it crashes when attemting to type the fourth 0.

[Bug 394676] [NEW] Some calendar items goes default to Sunday

2009-07-02 Thread Peter van der Laan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I use Ubuntu 9.04 with Evolution 2.26.1.
Today it is July 2nd.

I use in Evolution the Calendar with the week view. (Week start is Monday)
I try to make appointments by doubble click on the day.
But some appointments go wrong.

I found this strange behaviour:

Double click on a future day (in this example not a Sunday).
New appointment screen appears
Check if date is correct. If this is correct, be happy.

But now...
Close this window.
Double click again on the same day,
New appointment screen appears, but the date is shifted to the Sunday!

This behaviour appears also with past days, but then it goes to the
Monday.

Very strange!!!

[Bug 394654] Re: gconftool not present despite installing gconf2

2009-07-02 Thread Colin Stark
In that case, the command-not-found data needs to be updated.
As shown below, when typing gconftool into the terminal, the user is
instructed to install gconf2.

co...@colinlaptop:~$ gconftool
The program 'gconftool' is currently not installed. You can install it by
typing:
sudo apt-get install gconf2
-bash: gconftool: command not found

The error should only be the last line of that message.

However, I did notice that in previous versions of Ubuntu, /usr/bin/gconftool
pointed to /etc/alternatives/gconftool which in turn would have pointed to
either /usr/bin/gconftool-2 or /usr/bin/gconftool-1. I'm not sure if this was
removed by design or if this is a regression.

[Bug 394724] [NEW] Mod operation calculates wrong results!

Binary package hint: gcalctool

My distribution is:
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=9.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=jaunty
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 9.04

The packet with problem is:
$ dpkg -l | grep -i gcalctool
ii gcalctool 5.26.0-0ubuntu1 - A GTK2 desktop calculator

When I perform some operation with the 'modulus' division (%), I often
obtain wrong results.

Here, I give an example:

2^1000 Mod 3 returns an 86-digit result!!
Obviously, it is not the correct answer (the result must be: 0=result=2)

[Bug 394095] Re: Renaming music directory causes loss of metadata

2009-07-02 Thread Jeremy Visser
I confirm this bug.

Nautilus doesn't suffer from this with thumbnails of images. .thumbnails
has the thumbnails for your pictures, with the filenames based on the
MD5 of some file metadata including the path. If you drag the image to
another folder, the thumbnail's MD5 filename is updated to match the new
file location.

[Bug 217713] Re: Inserting blank CD opens window on all users' desktops

2009-07-02 Thread Poliltimmy
All is fine on my spare e machines. 8.10 works flawlessly. I tried to
install 7.10 on my primary machine. After a resolution problem it went
in. But I can not load any repositories for 7.10. It does how ever see
all cds/dvds. Since the repositories will not refresh It was an exercise
in futility. can not even istall sound converter. Since i7.10 sees them
I assume it is not a hardware problem. I am really frustrated. MS won't
let me reinstall my oem XP install and 7.10 is useless to me without
access to repos. It is a programing problem. thanks to 8.o4 and MS not
accepting keys for oem installs any more I essentially have a 1000
dollar net book. I assume I am not the only one too. Every person I
turned on to Ubuntu loved 7.10 but went back t MS after 8.10 upgrade
since it broke writing ability. I can not recommend something that does
not work!!

[Bug 379367] Re: gedit add a newline at the end of file.I hope it can be config

2009-07-02 Thread Felipe Hummel
I think you should reconsider the new line. It totally crashes PHP
redirects. PHP looks the new line as text. So when you try to send new
header, it has already been sent because of the tiny \n.

[Bug 341114] Re: No keyboard shortcut to hide/show gnome panel

2009-07-02 Thread jmmL
The link for the wontfix reason is incredibly old. Is it possible to get
this issue re-evaluated? I think it might make a good candidate for
papercuts, on accessibility reasons alone.
