[Bug 400973] [NEW] [karmic] Waiting for sound system to respond

2009-07-18 Thread arky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

The gnome-volume-control doesn't work with LiveCD running with orca
screen reader. It fails to start with 'Waiting for sound system to
respond' error. Ubuntu blindness profiles doesn't use pulseaudio, that
might be the source of the problem. On machines using pulseaudio it
works gnome-volume-control works fine.

I do not consider it working i jaunty. Because you can not not do any

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-07-18 Thread mac_v
@Marcus: sure, no problem...

I'v been using your ppa in Karmic, and my observations:

1: I Find the lack of the Up Button crippling.
I would even suggest replacing the Home button with the Up button.
But I have realized there is more space wasted due to the 2 drop down buttons.
We could remove one drop down button and reduce its size , This is allows us to
Add the Up button without compromising the space.
The single button can function like firefox's drop down menu.

I'v attached a mockup of the idea...

2: You might already be aware of this, but just to bring to your attention.
The Appearance Preferences Interface Toolbar Button labels option has no
effect.

[Bug 400983] [NEW] Nautilus unmounts multiple partitions when only trying to unmount one with Karmic

2009-07-18 Thread Scott Zawalski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Using the latest update of Karmic as of 7.17.09 when I unmount a

Inserting it should mount both
Try to unmount just one of them and both partitions should unmount.

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-07-18 Thread mac_v
Oh... and before people jump on the Up not needed because of breadcrumbs.
Up is more useful than the Home , since Home takes you to one specific
folder,
While using Up you can go to any parent folder. Without moving the mouse , by
just repetitive clicking in one location, which is easier than using Bread
crumbs.

[Bug 400820] Re: gnome-volume-control-applet takes up to 40% cpu

2009-07-18 Thread dino99
Karmic testing.

Same thing for me here:

- cpu used over 40 % by gnome-volume-control-applet.

- looking at .xsession-errors: this file is oversized too : over 25 Mio
after only 10 minutes still full filled. can't open it because too big
i suppose.

- user.log: i see oem-desktop last message repeated 43645 times

- to be able to open .xession-errors, i reboot then shut down to generate a
smaller file. Ok , here is interesting reasons and explanations:
  1) ** (gnome-volume-control-applet:3345): WARNING **: Connection
failed, reconnecting...
  2) (polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:3327): GLib-GIO-WARNING **:
g_simple_async_result_complete() called from outside main loop!
  3) (gedit:4398): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_progress_set_percentage:
assertion `percentage = 0 percentage = 1.0' failed

I've not found others messages but have no sound too since this problem
appear.

Let me know if you need specific output.

[Bug 400820] Re: gnome-volume-control-applet takes up to 40% cpu

2009-07-18 Thread dino99
Some more findings:

Htop shown me too that pulseaudio use ~15 % of cpu. So, in a console i
run : sudo dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio. This command stop restart
pulseaudio.

And the good surprise now: there is no more over eating cpu activity:
-no more trouble with previous gnome-volume-control-applet
 - nor with pulseaudio
 - and i can now open system/preferences/sound

So, it appear that it's clearly a problem of pulseaudio or of one of its
dependencies

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-07-18 Thread Danielsan474
Great job Marcus!

Only two things:

1. we could move Home and Search icons to places area, we need to free
space on main toolbar. I didn't like the double url-bar and search-bar.

2. in Places area, Home reference is ok, instead for Search (icon +
Search label) we could have an input text field. We don't need to
click on a search-icon, open a windows or whatever and digit some text;
we could write directly on that field. If Joe wants more, could open an
extended search window if needed...

[Bug 399328] Re: nautilus crashes with SIGSEGV in g_slice_alloc() when opening trash

2009-07-18 Thread Otto Schumacher
It's the same problem for me. Nautilus crashes whenever it tries to access the
Trash folder while it is not empty.
The only difference is, that I do not get any crash reports. Nautilus windows
simply disappear. Thats all.

Otto

[Bug 400940] Re: Evolution crashes using Search field in Current Account

2009-07-18 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

I made some changes on Marcus mockup to explain my latest ideas...

1. for url-bar (a power-user solutions to browse) CTRL-L like firefox and other

2. for location I made a mockup but I not so sure that could be usefull. We
have already Go menu in toolbar and less-is-more.

I didn't put my breadcrumb mockup here (take a look to my latest mockup)

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-07-18 Thread Marcus Carlson
mac_v 1) About the drop down buttons I agree they take up a lot of space and by
using Firefox style you mean right clicking the button?
mac_v 2) Yes I know, I've hardcoded it. Do we want to use the global setting
for nautilus? Personally I've never liked it because the applications I used a
lot I may just use the icons, but new applications or rarely used I might want
to have the text as extra help - but that's off topic.

Anyway, thanks for trying the package! :)

Danielsan474 1) Can't it be psychological to have a Home icon to click if I get
lost?
Danielsan474 2) Input textfield in the menu??

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-07-18 Thread Danielsan474
on nautilus-human-danielsan.png mockup:

1. like someone wrotes here, HOME is a place so I put this item in left-area
(aka Places area)
2. I like the two-status concept of Refresh-Stop and I place this icon-button
between Backward and Forward icons. If I don't want go back or go forward, I
could make just like a little jump (refresh) where I am now.

The users-blog-experience gives some hints (think about the breadcrumb).
Why don't assume the widget idea too for left-area? A widget for search,
places, folders, ecc.

my 2 cents

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-07-18 Thread Danielsan474
marcus 1) Can't it be psychological to have a Home icon to click if I
get lost?

yes, it could be but Home is a place, not an action (go backward, make a
jump-refresh, go forward). The same for Search. In fireforx we didn't
have a left-area to put these items.

marcus 2) Input textfield in the menu??

No, input textfield in left-area (aka Places)

2009-07-18 Thread Danielsan474
Looking forward...

since my left-area concept share some ideas with gnome-shell project,
this one should be an optional in long-run. It depend on what a user
want to do: click on Activities (gnome-shell) every time or use search-
places-folders in nautilus window.

[Bug 399328] Re: nautilus crashes with SIGSEGV in g_slice_alloc() when opening trash

2009-07-18 Thread A. Walton
It's recently gotten tricker to start Nautilus in the debugger due to
gnome session's pathological restarting behavior. Instead, try attaching
the debugger to the existing process and then reproduce the crash. You
can do this with this command:

gdb --pid=`pidof nautilus`

then typing c or continue and pressing return when you get to the
gdb prompt.

[Bug 401036] [NEW] gdm fails to read ~/.dmrc when pam_mount is used to mount users home directory

2009-07-18 Thread Otto Schumacher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Obviously, GDM has to fail when reading anything from the users home
directory if that is not yet mounted. For this reason it might not be a
good idea to rely on reading stuff from the users home directory before
authentication (PAM) has completed.

In my case GDM tries to set the preferred keyboard layout from ~/.dmrc.
This fails and I get a keyboard layout which is constantly confusing me
when I try to log in (my password is affected by the keyboard layout
setting).

GDM should have a means to set the keyboard layout preferences
independent of the user. Maybe a system-wide default would be sensible.
Or actually, the keyboard layout should be at first coupled to the
attached keyboard (type) and only second to the user. Most users
wouldn't work with a layout not matching their keyboard anyways.

Regards,
Otto

[Bug 356022] Re: unable to mount or browse samba networks

2009-07-18 Thread amanderge
I have the very same problem - Recently unable to browse the network via
Nautilus - Places - Network - Windows Network, but making a direct
connection using Samba worked. When attempting to browse the network, I
get the same error as OP. I just installed new updates on the morning of
Friday July 16.

I don't remember which updates were applied, and I am not sure how I can
verify which updates were last applied. However, I have run the
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r command in Terminal. It seemed like nothing was
happening in the Terminal window, and I let it run while I attempted to
browse the network via Nautilus - Places - Network - Windows Network.
While attempting to connect to Windows shares, this is what was dumped

Ok, here is the valgrind log. If I want to help with the debugger, do I
have to install any debugging stuff? I'm asking because, when I start
the debugger, one of the first lines is this:

[Bug 401038] [NEW] sticky notes keeping hidden

2009-07-18 Thread Tobias Strauß
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

system under test: ubuntu 9.04 amd64
compiz Version: 1:0.8.2-0ubuntu8.1
gnome-applets Version: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
fglrx-kernel-source: Version: 2:8.620-0ubuntu3
gfx: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD
4550]

Click on sticky note icons let disappear all notes. Click again does
just produce short flickering of existing notes. They are still hidden.

workaround:
compiz --replace fixes it most time. If not, start metacity --replace
first.

I have a problem with Virtualbox 3.0.2 with in fullscreen on second
screen, workaround is the same.

[Bug 401047] [NEW] Greeter doesn't have the right keymap set

2009-07-18 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

My symptoms are the same as bug 395103: although my keymap is set to
dvorak in HAL, and previous versions of gdm honored this, it's now using
a USA keymap.

There is a drop-down which allows a keymap to be selected, but selecting
Dvorak doesn't seem to have any effect (the keymap remains USA/qwerty).

I see the patch was dropped because this is believed fixed upstream, so
I'm filing this separately as it may be a different problem:

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-07-18 Thread mac_v
@Marcus ,
The Firefox style , i think you got it from Danielsan's explanation... if not,
firefox drop-down shows both the Back Forward locations

Other problems I found
1: The Search button is too close to breadcrumbs , its now easier to trigger
this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/57210

2: Right side is very empty.
I have attached a screenshot of my setup [it the same as yours but I'v added
separators, before the breadcrumbs ,also i replaced Home with Up, other than
that it is the same] It Shows the emptiness of the right side

To avoid the search bug, I'v added a mockup,
Its better to move it to the search to the right, just to the left of the
spinner.
This also partially negates the emptiness of the right side of the browser.

[Bug 401061] [NEW] nautilus item properties problem

2009-07-18 Thread Clement Creusot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When opening the properties of an image with nautilus, the window that is
opened have some problems.
The width of the windows seems to be the size of the longest string in the
properties. In my case the keyword string for the image file:
Keywords: abstract, background, beautiful, botany, change, climate, close,
close-up, closeup, colorful, colour, colourful, decoration, flora, foliage,
fresh, gradient, green, herb, isolated, leaf, leaves, life, limb, line, macro,
natural, nature, net, organic, path, pattern, plant, sample, season, seasons,
specimen, spring, structure, summer, surface, symbol, system, texture, tissue,
tree, up, vein, yellow, network

I have attached the image file that produces the problem and a screen
shot of the result.

I assume there is two problems:
- first, the string should be formated with a maximum width (a multi-line field)
- second, any property window should never be bigger than the screen size

This is not a important bug in terms of functionality but it is a bug in
terms of image.

I hope this helps.
Best regards,

Clement Creusot.

My version of nautilus:
$dpkg -l |grep nautilus
ii nautilus 1:2.24.1-0ubun file manager and graphical shell for GNOME

2009-07-18 Thread A. Walton
@Conrad: Does that valgrind log capture the crash? At a quick glance I'm
not seeing anything out of the ordinary for Nautilus in it.

@otto: you're experiencing lp bug #395710. Update Ubuntu-One.
