[Bug 403892] [NEW] ticking and unticking Improve Color contrast reset theme

2009-07-24 Thread Baptiste Mille-Mathias
Public bug reported:

- At the login greeter with the default ubuntu theme,
- open the accessibility option, and tick and untick Improve Colors contrast
(not sure of the english string, the second option)
- the theme parameter are lost (seem the gnome-seting-daemon is crashing) and
finally use the default GNOME theme (with blue color)

Sorry I don't more information to provide right now.

2009-07-24 Thread Athani
Hi. I don't think the bug is reproducible. But I think the movie
player may have caused it. I have just started using Ubuntu and I
suspect that the media players, amarok and movie player included, are
bugsy. I had also reported a bug about Amarok causing my computer to
freeze. Please see that. Thanks. Chandan Athani

[Bug 229169] Re: ntp support appears not to be installed after installing through Time Date settings

2009-07-24 Thread nimbosa
has the openNTPD implementation of NTP daemon been considered?

i think the Ubuntu teams working on this should resolve it quickly,
Debian-compatible distros have implemented this properly

ntpd should be functional out of the box, though time and date settings
could be set to Manual by default, since internet connection is NOT
assumed and ntpd should sleep when network manager sees no internet
connection

[Bug 403912] [NEW] gedit spell checker ignores dot after an abbreviation

2009-07-24 Thread VitaminR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I use gedit 2.24.2.

The use of the spell checker works fine in general, but if an
abbreviation comes along, it ignores the dot belonging to it and
recommends the abbr. with a dot. This causes two dots instead of
one.

e.g. (attention: its a german abbr.)

Dr. is already correct, but spell checker claims it incorrect because it only
recognises Dr
Then it recommends Dr.
If you accept it, it results in Dr..

[Bug 403836] Re: segmentation fault caused by scrolling while document is performing a background refresh (modified document)

2009-07-24 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 403922] [NEW] screensaver does not blank screen if no activity since (auto) login

2009-07-24 Thread Jack Wasey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I am using karmic up to date today (24th July).
I have auto-login configured, and haven't changed the default screensaver
settings.
If I boot the computer and leave it, the auto-login works, and the screensaver
activates. However, the screensaver (set to blank screen) does not blank the
screen, and I see the normal desktop. (I also see the dialogue to get password
to mount other drives - as described in alpha 3 release notes). Moving the
mouse causes the screen to fade to black, then immediately return to normal use.

Expected action: screensaver activates regardless of whether waiting for
a dialogue during boot, or if no activity since boot.

[Bug 403928] [NEW] Nautilus cannot handle network locations.

2009-07-24 Thread g0nad
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

nautilus:
  Installed: 1:2.26.2-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1:2.26.2-0ubuntu2

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 Alternate. I installed my window manager of
choice (not gnome) and I installed nautilus (for the purpose of browsing
SMB shares). When I opened nautilus and clicked the network lolly I
would get the error 'Nautilus cannot handle network locations.'.

I could not find a solution to this so I set out on finding it for
myself.

By trial and error I found that installing gdm and starting X using gdm
nautilus would then behave how it was supposed to (with regard to the
network button). I believe this is to do with how (nautius/gdm) then
invokes the gvfs stuff, but I am yet to grok that.

My suggestion would be to set nautilus so that it recommends gdm.

[Bug 403905] Re: sudo app install fails to take password while giving

2009-07-24 Thread Steve Woodruff
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug! However, it is not
supposed to display anything when you type in your password. It will
look like nothing's there. This is for security purposes. You really are
typing in your password, and it really is accepting it, though. So try
it again, this time type in your password just as you normally would,
and hit 'Enter' after it. This should make it go through unless there is
something wrong with your system.

Try it out, and post back here with your results.

[Bug 403907] Re: I cannot play any kind of video file in my UBUNTU.

2009-07-24 Thread Steve Woodruff
Can you help us out with a little bit more information? Are you getting
any error messages? If so, what do they say? What type of file(s) are
you trying to play that won't start? Have you tried several different
file-types with the same results? Have you tried running these files on
another movie player? Did you get the same results? Have you tried to
install any codecs for these filetypes which you are attempting to play?

For some more info on how to get your multimedia working, try following the
guide here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683
(especially the 'Video section) and see if you still have the same problems
afterwards. Please post back here, and let us know.

[Bug 399529] Re: automatic login not working

2009-07-24 Thread George Poulson
Sorry but I've been really busy with my work and haven't had much time
to follow up on this.

I checked and there is no 'ubuntu' account on my install.

I edited my /etc/gdm/custom.conf as follows and timed login worked as
expected.

AutomaticLoginEnable=false
AutomaticLogin=george
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=george
TimedLoginDelay=10

Clearly the problem was caused by the fact that auto login was set up
for an account that did not exist.

[Bug 301517] Re: solitaire game will not permit legal moves

2009-07-24 Thread Steve Woodruff
I too have been unable to reproduce this bug. However since this is a
card game I would reccomend running the following command in your
terminal (ApplicationsAccessoriesTerminal)

sudo apt-get purge gnome-games gnome-games-data gnome-cards-data
sudo apt-get install gnome-games gnome-games-data gnome-cards-data

It's a bit long, but you can copy and paste that right into your
Terminal to make it easier. This should be the best way to reinstall
your game packages. Please try it out, and post back here and let us
know if the bug still exists.

[Bug 401510] Re: Update to 2.27.4

2009-07-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package gnome-settings-daemon -

gnome-settings-daemon (2.27.4-0ubuntu1) karmic; urgency=low

  * New upstream version (LP: #401510):
- Remove screensaver plugin, it's autostarted now
  (Matthias Clasen)
- Don't take too long in RANDR D-Bus method implementation
  (Federico Mena Quintero)
- Add support for Synaptics touchpads (Matthias Clasen)
- Don't spawn more than one syncdaemon (Matthias Clasen)
- Depend on gnome-desktop = 2.26.3 (Rodrigo Moya)
- Update gnome-volume-control code from master (Bastien Nocera)
- Fix order of arguments to strstr (Federico Mena Quintero)
- Depend on libxklavier 4.0 (Sergey V. Udaltsov)
- Remove libglade dependency from media-keys and keyboard plugins
  (Felix Riemann)
  * debian/control{.in}:
- Bump libgnome-desktop-dev build-dependency.
- Migrate libxklavier12-dev build-dep to libxklavier-dev and bump
  version requirement.
- Build-depend on libpulse-dev.
  * Refreshed patches to apply cleanly again.
  * Dropped 07_use_gstreamer_volume.patch to use the Pulseaudio
volume control rather than the old GstMixer interface.
  * Dropped 08_extra_touchpad_options.patch - fixed upstream now.
  * debian/gnome-settings-daemon.install:
- Updated to correctly install *.ui files and control-center
  xml file.
  * debian/patches/50_ldsm_notification.patch:
- Upstream change to implement the new low disk space warning
(Fixes LP: #337441, LP: #390504 and LP: #396864).
  * debian/patches/60_ldsm_notification_fixup.patch:
- Fix some bugs in the upstream implementation of the last patch,
eg, I made the assumption that all mounts with a device node
not beginning with /dev could be ignored as a way of filtering out
uninteresting volumes. This is not so, as the GUnixMountEntry for
the root filesystem can have rootfs as the device node, and
we don't want to filter the root filesystem out.
- Make sure that no warning is shown for volumes with more than 2GB
  free space by default.

[Bug 403186] Re: gnome-terminal doesn't start

2009-07-24 Thread chpe
There is no need to ask the bug reporter for these, or any, details.
Just do a bit of research!

This bug is
(a) known upstream,
(b) fixed upstream since 2.24.1, but
(c) the fix is reverted by a patch in the ubuntu package.

So this is entirely ubuntu's fault.

[Bug 403960] [NEW] The option to recover documents does not look right in a viewer such as evince

2009-07-24 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
Public bug reported:

This is a bug report related to usability, please deal with it as such,
that is, let us discuss if the behaviour is correct or not before
dealing with technical aspects. This bug has been introduced in karmic.

When evince crashes, it offers the option to recover documents at next
startup. This option makes a lot of sense if evince is opened from the
menus, that is, if there is no file to open. It makes few sense when
evince is launched by clicking on an unrelated pdf to open it. There are
various reasons for that.

1) evince is a viewer, not an editor like openoffice, so in general it
is not so important to recover documents. Actually, the word recover
is plain wrong, since there is nothing to recover at all, because evince
is not an editor like openoffice. open or load is the right word
perhaps.

2) evince, differently from e.g. firefox, is not a multi-window and/or
multi-tabs application. This is in harmony with the gnome guidelines
that suggest just one document per window. Therefore, it has few sense
to open an unrelated document when clicking on a different pdf. I
consider this the most important reason.

3) if evince crashes on a pdf, chances are it will crash again so
recover is not that useful

4) if evince crashes, the user typically will click on the same pdf
again to reopen (and eventually discover point 3 above). This currently
triggers the recover document dialog, and whatever is the user choice,
the same document is opened, only once (because evince does not open
multiple windows for the same document)

I work with pdfs all day, and evince tends to crash often in recent
releases, thus I have good experience with the recover functionality. I
personally never found that useful, and found annoying a frequent popup
before opening my documents.

I would therefore suggest that the recover documents functionality is
either entirely removed or just used when evince is launched from the
menus (technically, when there is no document to open in the evince
command line).

If not, at least point 4 should be addressed, that is, the recover
functionality should not be offered if the only document to recover is
the one that is going to be opened. Also, the word recover should be
changed for something better. Will report upstream later.

[Bug 395299] Re: gdm 2.26 has no graphical configuration tool

2009-07-24 Thread Tumble
What about other features of gdmconfig like allowing remote X and configuring
xdmcp. Are there alternative guis for configuring these? I know they're
important to me, does anyone else feel these should be included in the plans
for the new tool?
Sorry in advance if I'm posting this in the wrong place, I'm still learning the
ropes.
