[Bug 408709] [NEW] New files on desktop require refresh (F5) to appear

2009-08-04 Thread Michael B. Trausch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When new files are saved to the desktop (e.g., via Firefox, or add
launcher to desktop, or wget in the ~/Desktop folder, etc.) they do not
appear until you give the desktop (Nautilus) focus and press F5 (or
otherwise restart Nautilus). GNOME Panel has the same problem, though
I'm not sure if that is a separate bug or not.

[Bug 408710] [NEW] Icons fall off in dual-screen (stretched, NVIDIA TwinView) desktop when secondary monitor is larger height

2009-08-04 Thread Michael B. Trausch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I have two screens, one is 1440x900 (on the left), and the other is
1280x1024 (on the right, the top aligns with the 1440x900 screen). When
Nautilus has many files on the desktop, some of their icons are placed
in the dead space below the 900px threshold on the left screen, where
the desktop icons live. In order to get them back, I must try to find
them with the mouse and move them, or clean up my desktop so that I can
auto-arrange to get them back.

This is in a fully-up-to-date Karmic.

[Bug 281131] Re: Signatures, When I have made a signature in HTML format and I save it. the next time that I used again I have the hole html format aroud mij signature. It changed completly.

2009-08-04 Thread Gerard Dethier
Hi all,

I have the same problem. Actually, Evolution does not save properly the
signature type in gconf database. If you create an HTML signature using
Evolution preferences, the signature will be correctly rendered in any
new mail until you restart Evolution. After the restart, the signature
is considered as plain text and the HTML code appears.

A workaround is to launch gconf-editor and then modify the key
/apps/evolution/mail/signatures (which contains the list of signatures
used by evolution) the following way :

1. Find the problematic signature in the list.
2. Change format attribut of tag signature from text/plain to text/html.

Note: If you modify the signature afterwards using Evolution
preferences, the signature type will stay text/html.

Added workaround to bug description, hope it's ok...

By the way, I'm not sure this bug really affects gtkhtml package as the

[Bug 281131] Re: Signatures, When I have made a signature in HTML format and I save it. the next time that I used again I have the hole html format aroud mij signature. It changed completly.

2009-08-04 Thread Gerard Dethier
Ok, I finally figured out that the problem came from the fact that I
modified an initially plain text signature to become an HTML signature.
When the signature is initially created as HTML formatted, everything is
fine.

[Bug 408762] [NEW] HTML signature not saved as such if initially created as plain text

2009-08-04 Thread Gerard Dethier
Public bug reported:

Package: evolution-2.26.1-0ubuntu2
Release: Ubuntu 9.04
Architecture: amd64

Description:
I modified a plain text signature to become an HTML encoded signature. The
newly modified signature was correctly rendered in new mails until I restarted
Evolution. After Evolution restart, the signature was inserted as plain text
and HTML code appeared instead of being rendered.

Steps to reproduce the bug:
1) Create a plain text signature in Evolution.
2) Close Evolution.
3) Restart Evolution and modify signature type (plain - HTML).
4) Close Evolution.
5) Restart Evolution and compose a new mail. Insert the signature. HTML code
appears as text instead of being rendered.

Workaround:
1) Close Evolution.
2) Launch gconf-editor and modify the key /apps/evolution/mail/signatures
(which contains the list of signatures used by evolution) the following way :
2.1) Find the problematic signature in the list.
2.2) Change format attribut of tag signature from text/plain to
text/html.
3) Start Evolution, the signature should be rendered correctly in new mails.

It seems, regarding the workaround, that evolution does not update the
format of signature in gconf database.

[Bug 408764] [NEW] missing window decorations after reboot

2009-08-04 Thread Jeroen Brandligt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

After each reboot there are no window decorations. I have to (re)set the
vissual effects after each reboot in the Uiterlijk (dutch app name) or
Themes application in the System - Preferences menu to restore them.
However this only works for the current session. I completely removed
all compiz packages to rule out this beeing a compiz problem. Also
reinstalled the metacity packages. The metacity --replace command only
solves this for the current session also. This problem occured some time
ago after an update, but i don't know which one exactly. I assume this
is a metacity problem because i don't know what else it could be, but
i'm not that much of an expert. I am aware of the fact that other people
had this problem before, but al the opted solutions did not work for me.

[Bug 293548] Re: can't save file in samba share

2009-08-04 Thread Andrew McRae
Well as usual in the Linux world we see bug reports being closed when the
problem has not been fixed.
If you try to use smbmount (ie mount.cifs) in Jaunty it still fails when trying
to save files.

Notice the person who said it was fixed had to change their
configuration to get it to work! That's a kludge to their system to work
around a bug in Ubuntu. No-one should have to change any parameters to
smbmount or fstab to get their SMB shares mounted when the same commands
worked fine in Hardy. Clearly a bug has been written between Hardy and
Intrepid and is still here in Jaunty.

My (former) Hardy and (present) Jaunty configuration uses this Sessions startup
command:
  smbmount '\\192.168.1.2\public' /home/andrew/naspublic -o guest

This worked fine in Hardy Heron, but neither GEdit nor OpenOffice nor
Audacious can save changes to files opened from the mountpoint. They
should be treated identically to any other filesystem file, and I repeat
it worked perfectly in Hardy.

There's three short-term workarounds, none of which are nice:
A) Uninstall Jaunty and go back to Hardy, or
B) Switch to using Windows XP, or
C) Copy to local drive, edit, copy back.

Option B actually is the easiest since I dual boot Windows anyway and
could install Microsoft Windows version of OOo.

Would prefer it if Ubuntu programmers could just fix the bug they added.

[Bug 408831] [NEW] killing windows in metacity

2009-08-04 Thread Sam Mason
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

For windows that won't let themselves be officially closed it would be
nice to be able to kill them (ala other window managers).

The motivating case for me is in firefox I went to Tools = Addons =
Get Ubuntu Extensions and this brought up another window (titled
gnone-app-install) that has been sitting around for ages not doing
anything. Admittedly this is a bug in this program, but programs will
always have bugs and there should be a way to work around this (short of
doing a kill from the command line, which I know is not what a kill
window would do).

I'm using 1:2.27.0-0ubuntu2 if it makes any difference!

[Bug 408836] [NEW] eSATA hotplug not working well with Nautilus

2009-08-04 Thread ZioNemo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

eSATA hotplug not working well with Nautilus

Hi,
I have an external eSATA disk I use for backups.
I am using it with several machines, including two ubuntu-9.04 Jaunty, fully
updated, machines.
Behavior on both is very similar.
The following concerns an Acer Aspire 8930 installation.

I am fully able to use it from the command line, so I'm reasonably happy ;)
Problem is Nautilus is working just half-way:
If I power-up with the disk attached it *is* recognized and Nautilus *does*
know it is a removable disk because it shows the umount buttons beside its
mount-points (under /media).
I can detach the disk just clicking on them and then detaching the drive.
At this point (correctly) the partitions disappear from the [Places] menu. If I
have an open window on Computer the icons do *not* automagically disappear,
even after refresh; I don't know if it's significant. Any subsequent opening of
Computer does not show the (now unavailable) partitions.
So far, so good.

Problem is if I reattach the drive (or attach it after boot) nothing is
displayed anymore in Nautilus.

The system detects There is a new disk:

[Bug 408844] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon uses all the cpu available

2009-08-04 Thread unchiujar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I have a 2 core machine and at startup gnome-settings-daemon takes over
one core completely. To use my laptop I have to kill the gnome-settings-
daemon process from the command line and this leaves me without any
customization to the GUI.

Description:Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release:9.10

gnome-settings-daemon:
  Installed: 2.27.5-0ubuntu2

As I can see from the report, everything is fine:

battery.charge_level.design = 84240 (0x14910) (int)
battery.charge_level.last_full = 66560 (0x10400) (int)
battery.charge_level.percentage = 72 (0x48) (int)
...
battery.rechargeable.is_charging = false (bool)
battery.rechargeable.is_discharging = true (bool)

So it should be working normally, isn't it?

[Bug 408870] [NEW] user switch applet is crippled

2009-08-04 Thread John Lenton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The user switch applet (gdm-user-switch-applet according to ps) only
lists lock screen, switch user and quit... actions (and quit...
pops up a window listing only log out and switch user). In Jaunty
there was a list of users, and suspend/reboot/shut down, which I rather
liked. The ability to suspend, reboot, and shut down my notebook was
quite nice. Also, I'd configured it to use up a lot less space on the
bar, and the option is now gone; it now shows my full name, which is
information I already know.

[Bug 381116]

2009-08-04 Thread Scott Howard
Richard Hughes, the author of gnome-power-manager, has written a bodge
in the most recent version of Karmic gnome-power-manager (2.27.5) [1] to
prevent screen blanking when using inhibit in gnome-session or xsync.
Could you test it to see if it is now working properly (a daily liveCD
of karmic should do [2])? Thanks in advanced.

He wrote:

This is now a known bug in gnome-session [1], and Robert Hughes (the
author of gnome-power-manager) wrote a bodge [2] to fix it. This fix
is included in the most recent version Karmic version of gnome-power-
manager (2.27.5-0ubuntu1). Could you check to make sure it is fixed? I'm

together to test this. Thank you for the report and your help!

2009-08-04 Thread John Lenton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

The screensaver no longer locks my screen automatically. If I select lock
screen from the user switcher applet it does lock, but it never kicks in on
its own. I have configured it so it locks after a relatively short period of
time, and it worked in Jaunty, but has broken in the upgrade to Karmic.
