[Bug 331429] Re: gnome does not honor the Disabled setting in sound preferences

2009-08-18 Thread Lucio Crusca
This is not an issue anymore for me since I upgraded to Jaunty, but it
has been an issue until the last day I had been using Intrepid. Now I
haven't Intrepid anymore on any of my computers, so I don't know if it
is still a issue for it.

As a side note (e.g. rant) Intrepid support will end in 8 months, and
since this bug received some attention after 6 months from the first
reporting, I guess any energy in its resolution would be wasted anyway.

As another side note (e.g. rant 2 the revenge), for a desktop system
this bug is quite important (I refer to the low importance assigned to
it), because if you disable a sound there could be a good reason behind
that choice besides your personal taste. FYI, I moved to Jaunty in the
hope of seeing this bug magically disappear (and it disappeared), but I
gained other problems with the move (and let alone bug #280657...). From
my p.o.v. bugs should not have any importance that differentiates them,
because if you dare to take the time to report a bug, that alone means
that bug is important, otherwise no one would have reported it. I think
that all bugs are at least normal bugs, then there are security
related bugs and bugs that cause data loss (more important) and maybe
others, but below normal bugs there should be no distinction between
what makes a particular package unusable or what renders a whole system
noisy and less sleeping baby nearby friendly: in my case this bug
rendered the whole system unusable in some situations (I couldn't turn
it on).

I know, it's volunteer work, little time, few developers, I could
contribute more, Vista is way worse, and so on. I'm not upset with
anyone, I just like saying what I think in hope someone takes my
thoughts as hints for the future.

[Bug 414914] Re: Gnome-display-properties crashes if you try to mirror with a smaller screen

2009-08-18 Thread Lionel Dricot
Hello Chris,

I will do that but I didn't find the dbg package, I was unaware of the
ddeb repository.

On a side note, I think I disagree with your use of incomplete in
Launchpad. For me, it means that it's a bug that cannot even be verified
without the requested information.

In this case, anybody with two screens should be able to reproduce this
bug, I think I provided enough information to reproduce the bug. Marking
it as incomplete is dangerous because if I don't reply, the bug will
disapear from LP but not magically from Ubuntu.

Of course, if you tested it yourself with 2 screens and nobody else was
able to reproduce that bug, then it makes sense. ;-)

PS : I will do the debugging stuff ASAP, don't worry

No, incomplete means it is still waiting on information to be useful -
ie, a backtrace. I don't have 2 screens, and lots of other developers
don't either. Without a backtrace, there's not enough information here
to do anything.

And also, you assume that everyone else can reproduce the bug - that's
not always the case with some crashers. It could just be something
unique to your setup (and lots of users have 2 screens and never hace
this problem).

I don't know why you think Incomplete is dangerous. It just means that
the bug report doesn't have enough information. Bug reports set to
Incomplete don't just magically disappear from Launchpad.

[Bug 415185] Re: rhythmbox closes when i press update podcasts. It didn't use to do this. Started a few weeks ago. Running Jaunty. No error message. Re-opens just fine.

2009-08-18 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 415279] [NEW] can't access samba-mount via gvfs (Invalid Argument)

2009-08-18 Thread derLars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Affected release: Karmic 9.10 (i386)
Affected version: gvfs 1.3.4-0ubuntu1

I am able to mount a sharepoint on a winXP with Domain Authentication. I
can see all files, and add files or remove files from nautilus or from
console.

However, if I want to access a file's content, I get an error Invalid
argument. This happens no matter how small a file is (tested with 12
byte and 25gb), and seems to be a problem arising at the end of a file
(when I try to copy the 25gb-file to a local directory, it always
crashes on the last 14kb).

Since this poses a serious problem in mixed environments, I propose to
mark this bug as severe importance to be fixed before releasing karmic.

[Bug 370999] Re: reports 0% until finished, also slowly burning at speed 0.3x or 0.5x

2009-08-18 Thread Nandox7
As it is stated there the problem seems to be the plugin used.
I also had this problem, as it was using wodim to burn the iso instead of
growisofs.
To remove wodim is not possible in a clean way as Brasero is marked to depend
on it and it will be removed along with wodim.

But there is a quick and simple workaround to fix half of this problem.
Using Gnome Configuration Editor navigate too:

apps brasero config priority

In there it list all the plugins found and their priority, by default
all are in 0 so Brasero chooses the one that fit the best.

Two things can be done here either disable the plugin in this case wodim and
that is done by changing the value to '-1' or
to increase the priority of the one we want and i went for growisofs and in
that case giving it a value higher than 0.

In my case I did both:

growisofs-burn = 1 (raises the priority forcing it to be choose)

This fixed my problem regarding the wrong percentage been showed as soon

Re: [Bug 414737] Re: Insists on printing to US paper size instead of A4, despite repeated setting to A4, looks to also involve Evince

2009-08-18 Thread Mark Trickett
Hello Pedro,

On Mon, 2009-08-17 at 12:29 +, Pedro Villavicencio wrote:
Thanks for the report, could you please try the same with Jaunty or
 Karmic? Thanks.

Minor hiccup, only one computer that I can use, this one, an IBM
Thinkpad, and I applied a BIOS Setup password that I forgot about, hence
I can only boot from the HDD, and cannot boot from a CD or DVD to
reinstall. I have upgraded from 7.4(?) or similarly early, and had to go
for the moved archived repositories, on dialup, and I suspect that the
bandwidth into the modems is limited to encourage moving to ADSL, which
is not supported by the Telstra equipment that I am connected to. In
other words, things are glacially slow.

I am hoping to sort out a desktop machine as my main machine, with this
as a mobile, and secondary, computer, and to install a later release
then. I will endeavour to enquire, and provide further reports, as I
can.

I have had to print from Evolution, so did to file as a PDF. I now need
to study how PDF's are put together, I have just made a significant
start on learning PostScript, but PDF's are a bit different. I have
found the comments about the DSC (Document Structuring Conventions) to
be interesting, see this page, and follow the link to Gripes.

http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/rjl.htm

I notice that the Evolution output used reals for the bounding box,
rather than integers. It would seem that there may be a number of issues
to clean up in the printing from Evolution. I have done a little C
coding, and I can try to grab the source at some point. I hope to find
something, and I will certainly be back to you. I am also going to
research what is valid for a PDF.

I am also trying to assist in the ongoing care of my father, who is in
an aged care facility, along with keeping the local authorities
satisfied that I am making sufficient efforts at seeking employment that
they will pay me unemployment benefits. This can include suitable
training, and I am going to try claiming my self tuition in programming,
PostScript, Perl, and refresher on C. I will do approved courses, if
they are available, but self train if not. I am living out of a rural
town in Victoria in Australia, and travel for training may require in
excess of an hour of driving, each way, along with significant fuel
costs. It is in the interests of everyone to not have to travel quite so
much, but I am not certain that I can persuade them.

[Bug 180261] Re: Adding a new user with Real Name containing an apostrophe fails

2009-08-18 Thread Gavin McCullagh
I've submitted a patch upstream to system-tools-backends which hopefully
should resolve this bug.

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=519273

This should hopefully be committed upstream soon and filter down in the
next update.

2009-08-18 Thread John Ward
The fact is ? shouldn't be a legal character as it can't be used
within Explorer or Command Prompt in Windows (XP anyway).

The following characters are illegal in Windows (under XP at least), see
the screenshot too:

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

The Volume control audio output will not stay at its adjusted value
following a re boot. Every time I re boot I find that the Audio has been
turned down to 0%.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 3 with latest patches which I assume takes it up
to Alpha 4
Kernal Linux 2.6.31-6-generic
GNOME 2.27.5
Memory 2.0 GB
Processor AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile technology ML-37

Audio hardware listed as follows in Sound preferences - Internal Audio 1

Following a reboot I found my sound preferences had the volume output

the reboot it was again set to 0%.

[Bug 414110] Re: crashes when delete the file in trash

2009-08-18 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-
file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where
_my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Public bug reported:

[Bug 414140] [NEW] [karmic] impossible to switch from kdm to gdm

2009-08-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Kubuntu Karmic, with all upgrades installed.
Firstly, kubuntu was installed, then ubuntu-desktop was added.

It is impossible to switch from kdm to gdm using the standard command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
  * Reloading GNOME Display Manager configuration...
  * Changes will take effect when all current X sessions have ended.
invoke-rc.d: initscript gdm, action reload failed.

On the other hand, the command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm

[Bug 415001] Re: Ekiga client crash

2009-08-18 Thread Yannick Defais
Normally, when ekiga crash aport should start automatically to report a
backtrace. It seems it does not work in your case.

As we need a backtrace to see where Ekiga crash, here is a manual
approach:

Install needed packages for a good backtrace:
$ sudo aptitude install gdb ekiga-dbg libopal3.6.1-dbg libpt2.6.1-dbg avahi-dbg
libglib2.0-0-dbg libgtk2.0-0-dbg

Getting the stack backtrace, in a terminal, type:
$ gdb --args ekiga -d 4 21 | tee gdb-ekiga.txt
(gdb) run

Now Ekiga should run normally. Perform the action you did to make it
crash, then go back to the terminal window and you should see something
like SIGSEGV at...

At this stage type:
(gdb) thread apply all bt
(gdb) quit

The file gdb-ekiga.txt has the backtrace you need to attach here; go to this
URL: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ekiga/+bug/415001 , there is a
form to attach a file at the bottom.
The file gdb-ekiga.txt should be in your home directory.

Now you can safely remove the packages you installed in order to get the
backtrace:
$ sudo aptitude remove gdb ekiga-dbg libopal3.6.1-dbg libpt2.6.1-dbg avahi-dbg
libglib2.0-0-dbg libgtk2.0-0-dbg

Best regards,
Yannick

[Bug 415458] [NEW] evolution UI hangs formatting message when using evolution-exchange

2009-08-18 Thread ckgreenman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I've looked at the previously reported bugs and none seem to match what
I'm seeing. However if this is a duplicate I apologize.

I'm running evolution 2.26.1 under Ubuntu Jaunty 9.0.4 2.6.28-15-generic. I
have 2 accounts active (1 imap and one exchange using the evolution-exchange
plugin). Periodically throughout the day the UI will end up in a state where
it will no longer preview messages in the main window but displays nothing but
Formatting Message. However, double clicking a message will open a message
view displaying the full contents of the message. While in this state, the
only method I have found to close the main window is to kill it form the
console. Clicking the close box or trying to close it in any other manner
leaves it in a hung and unresponsive state. I also use Evolution on 2 other
machines, same version, same OS and rev, but those systems do not use
evolution-exchange and do not exhibit this problem.

[Bug 370999] Re: reports 0% until finished, also slowly burning at speed 0.3x or 0.5x

2009-08-18 Thread Petar Velkovski

noticed that when I choose the burning speed manually, in my case 8x
instead of the max value, the burning is performed faster.

I have the fix now, just waiting for it to build on launchpad and then I
shall test it in a karmic virtual image (ie. whether it works, whether
it translates correctly etc.)
