[Bug 369498] Re: 32bits gtk and glib modules not found in ia32-libs

2009-09-17 Thread qiuyao
I guess the gio problem might be due to gtk2-engines. After install gtk2
-engines-nimbus, and apply it. The gio problem disappears.

I downloaded the nimbus theme from:

[Bug 430494] Re: gdm upstart script fails to start gdm

2009-09-17 Thread Arjen
I have similar behaviour from my gdm. It starts X, somehow thinks it
should be killed (or something dies?) right after it started and tries
again. It doesn't even start a greeter (like in Pete's case), although
upstart does claim gdm is actually started.

I've also attached my gdm logs, although I'm not sure whether its the
same issue or something related that should actually be reported
separately.

[Bug 410072] Re: A middle mouse button paste in gedit does not move cursor to insertion point

2009-09-17 Thread Bigfoot77210
I agree with Jason.
Just try to write your PhD report in Latex using gedit.
Each time you want to copy and past something with the mouse, you're lost. You
have to scroll 300 lines to go back to your previous position.

What is the interest in going back to the original text of the copy and
past action? What if you want to copy and paste at several positions in
the text. Just look at the following example:

line 056: text to copy and paste
…
line 102: paste the text here
…
line 150: paste again here
line 151: paste again here
line 152: paste again here and continue writting your poetry…

Each time you paste, you go back to line 56… You must scroll the screen
almost 5 times! It is just borring. I do not speak about the other bugs
of this feature in gedit, such as buffer erased when you left click on
the document (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34629). Combining all
those bugs make this great feature almost useless in gedit as it is for
OOo 3.

Why is this feature more easy to use in the terminal than in a text
editor?

This feature should work in gedit like it works in other applications.
That's what I think.

[Bug 431176] Re: karmic: gdm should not start in single user (recovery) mode

2009-09-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
 * What do you mean that gdm starts in recovery mode anyway now?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Martin

Thank you very much! I have done that - and there is now no annoying
error message. Even if I add a second layout (German). Even if I add
the second layout as German-Mac :) :)

So, I'll leave this bug and join the other?

Now I just have to find why my keyboard isn't passed back to my host in
VB.. I love linux :D

2009-09-17 Thread Martin Pitt
Do you also get this after a clean boot, or just after devicekit-disks
package gets upgraded? Since yesterday evening, the devicekit-disks
upgrade kills the old daemon, which kills the cd-rom polling process
along with it. I suppose this has something to do with it.

[Bug 12154] Re: Nautilus should have a superuser mode

2009-09-17 Thread Alexander Gabriel
psylem: that may be so. BUT This bug was filed because it's an usability
issue. That doesn't go away with nautilus-gksu. You can't expect the
user to know of the package. It's not installed by default. Let's say
you'd have to install a package to copy a file. Not a good workflow.

Now if it were installed by default...That'd be much better, but still
not optimal to me.

[Bug 430981] [NEW] keybindings not remembered on reboot

2009-09-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi, after recent upgrades, changes to the keybindings in compiz or in
SystemPreferencesKeyboard Shortcuts are not remembered anymore after
logging in.

I tried adding a shortcut key to open a terminal, and it works fine, but
I expect it to be saved after I reboot, as it used to be. Now, upon
reboot, the keyboard shortcut no longer works.

Same problem with CCSM; changing keybindings for Ring Switcher doesn't
last after reboot.

[Bug 431261] [NEW] gnome-thumbnail-font couldn't process file: Reason: Took too much time to process.

2009-09-17 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Hi,

when trying to view directories with TTF font files (e.g.
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont), my nautilus shows a correct
thumbnail only for two or three of these fonts and just the standard
symbol for all other fonts, without obvious reason.

Things get more obvious if I try to view the same directory with a
thunar started from command line, since this issues visible error
messages:

gnome-thumbnail-font couldn't process file:
'file:///usr/share/fonts/truetype/dustin/Dustismo.ttf'
Reason: Took too much time to process.

Although I am running a modern AMD cpu. So maybe the timeouts should be
adjusted (or make configurable in gnome settings / gconf

[Bug 431264] [NEW] cpufreq-applet needs root rights to change frequency

2009-09-17 Thread Klaus Doblmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with latest updates here (cpufreq-applet version
2.27.92)

I'm running BOINC and as of lately when selecting ondemand (which is a
different bug) the cpu goes up to its maximum frequency (it used to stay
at the lowest frequency in intrepid...) so I need to set it manually to
800MHz (lowest frequency on my CPU) after every reboot. When I change
the frequency, I'm asked for my superuser password which is quite
annoying and it wasn't the case in previous versions (intrepid). I hope
this behaviour can be reverted or maybe someone can tell me the resons
for the applet currently needing root permissions.

cheers,

[Bug 431267] [NEW] The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog only

2009-09-17 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Hi,

when viewing font file directories with thunar (e.g.
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont) and mouseklicking a ttf file, a
window opens and shows font samples.

Unfortunately the examples contain only 0-9, a-z, A-Z and .:,;(*!?) and
are restricted to american/ASCII charsets only.

But when living somewhere outside the USA (and there really exists
something outside) other characters of local charsets become relevant
like german öäüÖÄÜß, and it is important to see whether a given font
contains these (or any other) characters.

Propopals:
* use a locale specific text example
* allow to configure the text example in gconf
* allow to enter arbitrary text in a text field to be rendered.

As a result (I think) I keep on getting respawning nautilus icons in the

[Bug 430573] Re: gcalctool has no x^y button in programming view

2009-09-17 Thread Spuerhund
Yes, a clickable button is missing. Typing ^ does not work, at least
not for me. I use the german default keyboard layout and need to press
the circumflex button twice to get a single ^ sign printed (that works
in all other applications). Pressing this button once, twice or even
more in gcalctool does not print any ^ sign so i cannot access this
function with my keyboard either which means i have to switch to the
scientific view to get a button that i can click with my mouse. Another
workaround is to copy a single ^ sign to the clipboard and then paste it
into gcalctool using the Ctrl+v shortcut.

[Bug 431300] [NEW] gnome-dictionary has no control for editing sources

2009-09-17 Thread Dennis van Dok
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

The gnome-dictionary preferences menu item, source tab, shows the
available dictionary sources with radio buttons. There are buttons to
'add' and 'delete' a source, but there is no button to edit the selected
source. To edit, you need to double-click on the source name, which to
me seems a usability problem.

I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) amd64.

gnome-utils:
  Installed: 2.26.0-0ubuntu1

[Bug 431264] Re: cpufreq-applet needs root rights to change frequency

2009-09-17 Thread Chris Coulson
Thanks, but that's not a bug. Before Jaunty, it was possible to
configure cpufreq-selector to be installed with the setuid bit set. That
was a hack, and it has since been migrated to Policykit. You need to
authenticate with Policykit to change the governor settings (and that
was also the case in Jaunty - it's nothing new).

If you don't want to do that, then you can adjust the policy to allow
you to adjust the frequency without authenticating.

[Bug 431312] [NEW] gnome-dictionary doesn't talk to localhost

2009-09-17 Thread Dennis van Dok
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

I installed a local dictionary server to be able to work off-line. I
added a new source in gnome-dictionary with the following settings:

name : local
hostname: localhost
port: 2628

I selected the local source and tried a lookup. Instead of a definition,
I got:

Fout bij het opzoeken van de definitie
Verbinding mislukt voor de woordenboekserver op localhost:2628

(Which translates to 'error looking up definition; connection failure
for dictionary server on localhost:2628')

Further information:

- the local dictionary server is running and allows local connections
- I tested the local connection with telnet and got a working connection
- a tcpdump on the loopback interface shows what might be the cause:

tcpdump -i lo
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode
listening on lo, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 96 bytes
11:55:06.848531 IP6 localhost.33863 localhost.dict: S
1538443312:1538443312(0) win 32752 mss 16376,sackOK,timestamp 1205001 0,[|tcp]
11:55:06.848547 IP6 localhost.dict localhost.33863: R 0:0(0) ack 1538443313
win 0
11:56:10.810620 IP6 localhost.33865 localhost.dict: S
1074814782:1074814782(0) win 32752 mss 16376,sackOK,timestamp 1220992 0,[|tcp]
11:56:10.810636 IP6 localhost.dict localhost.33865: R 0:0(0) ack 1074814783
win 0

So it seems a IPv6 connection was attempted. dictd will not work on
IPv6.

The contents of /etc/hosts:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 camilla

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

It seems that only ::1 was attempted. When I try telnet localhost I get:

telnet localhost dict
Trying ::1...
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 camilla dictd 1.10.11/rf on Linux 2.6.28-15-generic auth.mime
8.9063.1253183...@camilla

It seems telnet tries ::1 first, then 127.0.0.1.

Finally, changing the source settings in gnome-dictionary to use
'127.0.0.1' instead of 'localhost' resolved the issue.

[Bug 431027] Re: No longer able to rip CD's from rhythmbox

2009-09-17 Thread Soren Hansen
It turns out that it's rhythmbox's fault. gstreamer grew a richer URI
format for cdda:// URI's, and rhythmbox has been using a different
format for a long time, which has happened to work, because gstreamer
ignored the extra data in there.
