[Bug 433808] [NEW] Patch to add a fuzzy clock
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Ubuntu version: 8.10 gnome-panel version: 2.24.1-0ubuntu2.1 I noticed a request on the Ubuntu brainstorm site for a fuzzy clock in Gnome (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/6252/) and I wanted one, too. Attached is a patch to some of the files in gnome-panel's applets/clock directory. There are two issues I haven't addressed: 1.) Blank space after fuzzy clock text: This is caused by clock_size_request() ignoring requests to resize to smaller dimensions than are currently used by the clock. As the source mentions, this prevents a jumping clock when a proportional font is used. If you'd like the clock to resize, just add cd-format == CLOCK_FORMAT_FUZZY_HOUR || cd-format == CLOCK_FORMAT_FUZZY_DAY || to the start of the conditions of the two if statements in that function. 2.) Internationalization: The text strings used in the fuzzy clocks need to be translated. I also tweaked the patch so it applies cleanly against Karmic's version of gnome-panel (2.27.92-0ubuntu4), but I can submit that in a separate bug report, if preferred. ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Patch to add a fuzzy clock https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433808 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 433827] [NEW] Regression: Automatic proxy configuration + gnome-terminal now breaks apt-get, curl, wget...
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal The fix for bug 48294 -- at least as implemented in gnome-terminal 2.27.92-0ubuntu1 from Karmic -- may be theoretically more correct, but it seems to have broken strictly more apps than it fixes. Steps to reproduce: 1) Go to System - Preferences - Network Proxy, select Automatic proxy configuration, and enter the URL of a PAC proxy (I use http://webproxy.ucsd.edu/proxy.pl). 2) Start a gnome-terminal. 3) echo $http_proxy Before bug 48294 was fixed, this produced http://:8080;, which breaks wget, but most apps are happy to ignore it this obviously invalid URL. One can reproduce the old behavior easily at the command line: $ http_proxy=http://:8080 wget google.com # FAILS: Error parsing proxy URL $ http_proxy=http://:8080 curl google.com # SUCCEEDS $ http_proxy=http://:8080 sudo apt-get update # SUCCEEDS With current gnome-terminal, the above steps result in http_proxy being set to pac+http://webproxy.ucsd.edu/proxy.pl;. I cannot find any reference to this pac+http URL scheme anywhere, and indeed, apps do not know how to handle it: $ http_proxy=pac+http://webproxy.ucsd.edu/proxy.pl wget google.com # FAILS: Error parsing proxy URL $ http_proxy=pac+http://webproxy.ucsd.edu/proxy.pl curl google.com # FAILS: couldn't connect $ http_proxy=pac+http://webproxy.ucsd.edu/proxy.pl sudo apt-get update # FAILS: 404 errors So not only did this fix fail to fix the old broken software, it breaks new software, and the newly broken software is failing in very confusing ways. In the long run this should perhaps be considered a bug in wget, curl, apt-get, and every other HTTP implementation in in Ubuntu, but I'm filing against gnome-terminal because 1) that's what caused the regression, 2) at this point in the release cycle I'm guessing you might want to just unset http_proxy in these proxy auto-config cases (none of this software could parse the PAC file anyway, it requires a javascript interpreter), rather than try to fix everything everywhere... ** Affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Regression: Automatic proxy configuration + gnome-terminal now breaks apt-get, curl, wget... https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433827 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 433827] Re: Regression: Automatic proxy configuration + gnome-terminal now breaks apt-get, curl, wget...
Actually, I'm sorry, it might not be gnome-terminal that has the offending code anymore -- this bug seems to affect apps launched from the panel, too. In particular, update-manager is now broken. (I was *wondering* why it hadn't popped up since I upgraded...) The error message is uninformative, but I confirmed that it is the same problem by (1) verifying via /proc/$(pidof update-manager)/environ that update-manager had the bad http_proxy variable set, (2) turning off the proxy in Network Proxy Preferences, (3) restarting update-manager (4) confirming that the http_proxy environment variable was gone and that (5) update- manager now worked. I think that may make this what Debian would call a critical bug. -- Regression: Automatic proxy configuration + gnome-terminal now breaks apt-get, curl, wget... https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433827 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a '.crash' file. I would like to request that Ubuntu goes in its own direction regarding this bug - seems like an obvious paper cut to me. If a new Ubuntu user has accidentlly removed both panels, it is extremely difficult to get them back and I could easily see it leading to a reinstall. If there is only one panel existing on the screen, could it be locked in place requiring an 'unlock panel' or could an extra warning be given before it is removed? Warning: if you remove this panel you will not be able to access some applications and settings. Are you sure? [Bug 249650] [NEW] Workspace switcher preview compressed after increasing Visual Effects
You have been subscribed to a public bug: On a new install of 8.04, I ran updates and installed a few packages that shouldn't have any effect at all on the display. The only thing I did related to the display was install the restricted driver for my ATI Radeon X1600 (oh, and moved that one bar to the bottom, since I'm used to Windows) The scenario is this: With Appearance Preferences/Visual Effects set to None, I set there to be two rows for a total of six workspaces (3 each - this should really use the row/column like the other one) Then I enabled Visual Effects (whether to Normal or Extra made no difference) and it put all of my workspaces on a single row, using the top half of the workspace display. When I set it to 2 rows of three columns, it compressed everything to something really small - but not unclickable - crammed in the top half of the display. With some experimentation I determined: The number of columns has no effect whatsoever. If more than two rows are used when Virtual Effects are off, then when they are turned on the new rows are compressed into the corresponding fraction of available space. To workaround, turn Virtual Effects off and set all workspaces to one row, then turn them on again and arrange as desired. ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Incomplete -- Workspace switcher preview compressed after increasing Visual Effects https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/249650 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 433671] Re: nautilus crashed
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
