[Bug 435719] [NEW] gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gvfs gvfsd usually start a gvfs-fuse-daemon for GVFS mounts, which fuse- mounts to $HOME/.gvfs. This fails if the home directory resides on an NFS share with root squashing enabled. Thus, users in a corporate/networked environment with such NFS homes cannot use gvfs effectively, since a lot of applications rely on the fuse mount. For those unfamiliar with NFS, root squashing means the local UID 0 is mapped to the anonymous/nobody UID on the remote system when it tries to access the NFS share. Since home and subdirectories have permissions 0700, $HOME/.gvfs cannot be accessed by root in this case. This makes the mount() call of gvfs-fuse-daemon fail (verifiable with 'strace gvfs- fuse-daemon /home/user/.gvfs'). There are two solutions to this: a) disable root squashing b) move the .gvfs directory somewhere else a) is not a good choice for security reasons. b) seems not to be possible at the moment. I looked at the sources for the current (jaunty and karmic) gvfs package and found mount-fuse_mountpoint = g_build_filename (g_get_home_dir(), .gvfs, fs_name, NULL); in daemon/mount.c. Even though gvfs-fuse-daemon can be called with any path you like, it looks like the path which gfvsd uses for the call is hard-coded. I was able to symlink /home/user/.gvfs to /tmp/.gvfs, and this works. But I am not sure if that is a good solution. I would like to ask the package maintainers to a) include a README.NFS in the package which points out the problem and workaround (I can write one if you like) and b) forward this bug upstream to the right place, so the path with which gfvs-fuse-daemon gets called can be configured. ** Affects: gvfs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/435719 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gvfs in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

You're right, gvfs-fuse does not work with NFS homes right now, at least not with root-squashing enabled. UID 0 needs to get access to ~/.gvfs for mounting, which fails in this case. Unfortunately, the path for .gvfs cannot be easily changed. I have posted a new bug against gvfs for this (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/435719). As a temporary workaround, it is possible to symlink ~/.gvfs to /tmp/.gvfs. I still wonder why it works with the vanilla packages, though. Does vanilla support native GIO/GVFS? I tried yesterday with the latest karmic packages, because the Changelog mentioned something about gvfs fuse, but it did not work either. -- Files on gvfs mounts cannot be opened when home is on NFS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433944 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 435106] Re: Can't remove software-store from main menu
Ok, I figured out what I was missing: Alacarte showed the Software Store, but over on the right hand side, after Applications (ie not in any of Applications's immediate subcategories). Because it was showing in the main menu as a top level (between System Tools and Places) I had been looking on the *left* hand side for the menu entry to uncheck. Re: [Bug 435780] Re: Nautilus reports could not display... empty file
Hi Sebastian, Yes, I understand. The problem is that the error message is not helpful at all, and it would really seem logical to open unknown files by default in the text editor. This is the sort of behaviour that's really annoying on windows: each time you try to open a file that is not registered, you have to browse through a lot of applications to find notepad to be allowed to read a totally normal textfile. I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on this computer, and it seems that, now, after I choose to open in gedit the first time, new files open fine without more troubles. Still believe that this should be default behaviour, though :)) regards Jonas:)) 2009/9/24 Sebastien Bacher seb...@ubuntu.com the reason it behaves differently on local and non-local locations is that it's using the file content on local drives to know what to use but it would be expensive to load the file in other cases ** Also affects: nautilus Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Summary changed: - Nautilus reports could not display... empty file + non local files opening relies on filename ** Summary changed: - non local files opening relies on filename + opening of non local files relies on filename to be correct -- opening of non local files relies on filename to be correct https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/435780 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. -- Jonas F Henriksen Arc|Giraff AS t 90688031 -- opening of non local files relies on filename to be correct https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/435780 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

This is a particularly frustrating bug to replicate, since it kills all your gnome-terminal windows over all your desktops and completely derails your train of thought; I've had it happen in ubuntu-8.04 64-bit both when changing the size of the scrollback buffer (to something enormous; I prefer 8MB of scrollback in each tab) and when setting scroll-on-keystroke. Having two windows, one with two tabs, and while true; do ls -l /tmp; done in all three tabs made this problem appear even when I just changed the terminal bell setting! ** Attachment added: .crash file http://launchpadlibrarian.net/32367053/_usr_bin_gnome-terminal.1153.crash -- gnome terminal crashes when changing profile https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/261499 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 130997] Re: Non-Linux hidden files like Thumbs.db should be treated the same as .filename
So does this mean that nothing will be done at all? Besides, I can think of cases beyond Thumbs.db, where it would be nice to have a way of hiding files. Pesky .pyc files are a good example. Nautilus already does its own hiding of files, such as files ending with ~, so why is this a big problem? Also, sometimes folders will get copied from one filesystem to another, and so hiding Thumbs.db on a filesystem that looks like Windows, only to have it appear on an ext4 partition after copying, doesn't seem like a much better solution. Of course I'm not sure if that's what the filesystem specific checks would imply, but it's a potential problem. -- Non-Linux hidden files like Thumbs.db should be treated the same as .filename https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/130997 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 435935] [NEW] Support Upstart
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: system-tools-backends The backends have to support Upstart so that services-admin can be shipped again (see bug 433701). Maybe services-admin should be modified too so that it fits better in to Upstart's design (e.g. no runlevels but dependencies), though it could be considered as an optional improvement. ** Affects: system-tools-backends (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Confirmed ** Changed in: system-tools-backends (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- Support Upstart https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/435935 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to system-tools-backends in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
