Can you check to see if this is a duplicate of bug #416251? That bug
seems similar to this.

[Bug 313630] [NEW] Truncated desktop/app display in Intrepid

2009-09-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After login, desktop icons are forced into the top 2/3 of the screen. On open
of any application, Firefox, Gedit, etc, the screen is maximized, but only
fills 2/3 of the screen. Minimize/re-maximize has no effect.

Valid workarounds include logging out and back in, or changing the
refresh rate on the screen resolution from 60 to 70 and back again. Fix
only holds up until the next reboot.

System is dual-core Asus/Athlon Pentium 64, Monitor is 17 Sceptre CRT.

[Bug 435719] [NEW] gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes

2009-09-24 Thread Andreas Heinlein
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

gvfsd usually start a gvfs-fuse-daemon for GVFS mounts, which fuse-
mounts to $HOME/.gvfs. This fails if the home directory resides on an
NFS share with root squashing enabled. Thus, users in a
corporate/networked environment with such NFS homes cannot use gvfs
effectively, since a lot of applications rely on the fuse mount.

For those unfamiliar with NFS, root squashing means the local UID 0 is
mapped to the anonymous/nobody UID on the remote system when it tries to
access the NFS share. Since home and subdirectories have permissions
0700, $HOME/.gvfs cannot be accessed by root in this case. This makes
the mount() call of gvfs-fuse-daemon fail (verifiable with 'strace gvfs-
fuse-daemon /home/user/.gvfs').

There are two solutions to this:
a) disable root squashing
b) move the .gvfs directory somewhere else

a) is not a good choice for security reasons. b) seems not to be
possible at the moment. I looked at the sources for the current (jaunty
and karmic) gvfs package and found

mount-fuse_mountpoint = g_build_filename (g_get_home_dir(), .gvfs,
fs_name, NULL);

in daemon/mount.c. Even though gvfs-fuse-daemon can be called with any
path you like, it looks like the path which gfvsd uses for the call is
hard-coded. I was able to symlink /home/user/.gvfs to /tmp/.gvfs, and
this works. But I am not sure if that is a good solution.

I would like to ask the package maintainers to a) include a README.NFS
in the package which points out the problem and workaround (I can write
one if you like) and b) forward this bug upstream to the right place, so
the path with which gfvs-fuse-daemon gets called can be configured.

[Bug 433944] Re: Files on gvfs mounts cannot be opened when home is on NFS

2009-09-24 Thread Andreas Heinlein
You're right, gvfs-fuse does not work with NFS homes right now, at least
not with root-squashing enabled. UID 0 needs to get access to ~/.gvfs
for mounting, which fails in this case. Unfortunately, the path for
.gvfs cannot be easily changed.

I have posted a new bug against gvfs for this
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/435719). As a
temporary workaround, it is possible to symlink ~/.gvfs to /tmp/.gvfs.

I still wonder why it works with the vanilla packages, though. Does
vanilla support native GIO/GVFS? I tried yesterday with the latest
karmic packages, because the Changelog mentioned something about gvfs
fuse, but it did not work either.

Thank you, Yannick.

My sister will download and try the new version over the weekend.

Testing on my own updated Ekiga to call 5...@ekiga.net and 5...@ekiga.net I
get 'Security check failed.'

I'll see what I've stuffed up.

Best wishes!

Michael.

 Hi,

Ekiga 3.2.6 was relesed yesterday. It is a major improvement in terms of
stability. I advice you give it a try.

Your issue might be related to a bug affecting the whole 3.2.x serie:
using to many codecs turns calls to fail.

 Please try this:
Update your Ekiga with 3.2.6 using my packages:
 https://launchpad.net/~sevmek/+archive/ekiga-released

Ask your sister to upgrade to 3.2.6 too:
 http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Windows_Users
 (using 3.2.6 Release)

Please try this setup and tell me if it works:
Disable all audio codecs but G722, disable all video codecs but Theora
on both ends (you and your sister). Try to place the call.

 Best regards,
 Yannick

[Bug 435106] Re: Can't remove software-store from main menu

2009-09-24 Thread Andrew Cowie
Ok, I figured out what I was missing: Alacarte showed the Software
Store, but over on the right hand side, after Applications (ie not in
any of Applications's immediate subcategories). Because it was showing
in the main menu as a top level (between System Tools and Places) I
had been looking on the *left* hand side for the menu entry to uncheck.

So, not a bug, though perhaps it could be taken as a suggestion on the
discoverability front.

[Bug 388953] Re: bad file descriptor on .deb install

2009-09-24 Thread Jonathan Lumb
Same problem here - I have had this issue over the last few days on
Ubuntu Karmic Alpha 6.

Whenever I double click on a *.deb file on the desktop and try and
install, I get the below error (but in Chinese, not english)

dpkg: 在包状态和进度文件描述符 时,无法读取文件描述符的标志位: 错误的文件描述符
dpkg: unable to read filedescriptor flags for package status and progress file
descriptor: Bad file descriptor

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help get this fixed, in the
meantime, to install individual DEB files I am using the following
command:

sudo dpkg -i my-file.deb

This seems to work fine as a temporary workaround.

found in Ubuntu 8.10 (with all the latest updates)
can't be tested in 9.04 due to another bug which prevents access altogether
camera used is a Canon EOS 10D running in 'Normal' communication (not PTP)

bug resides somewhere between nautilus and libgphoto2:
when trying to delete files or folders off an attached camera, and error is
returned by nautilus saying the the operation is Not Supported
libgphoto2 supports the deletion of file and folders off of cameras,
including the canon EOS 10D

the program gThumb is able to delete files off of the very same camera by
calling gp_camera_file_delete directly through libgphoto2 on the same
installation
the use of gp_camera_file_delete in gThumb can be found in the source code
(2.10.0 from sourceforge) in '/src/dlg-photo-importer.c' on line 1267

problem seems to be in process gvfsd-gphoto2 - it's cpu % increases when
trying to delete files, and it only appears when the camera is plugged

[Bug 435801] [NEW] gdm still appears briefly even though autologin is enabled

2009-09-24 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I enabled autologin, and when I reboot I see:

 * Blinking cursor in the upper left corner
 * then Xsplash

This translates to a very jittery boot experience, and means boot takes
a long time (about 40 seconds).

Re: [Bug 435780] Re: Nautilus reports could not display... empty file

2009-09-24 Thread Jonas Henriksen
Hi Sebastian,
Yes, I understand. The problem is that the error message is not helpful at
all, and it would really seem logical to open unknown files by default in
the text editor. This is the sort of behaviour that's really annoying on
windows: each time you try to open a file that is not registered, you have
to browse through a lot of applications to find notepad to be allowed to
read a totally normal textfile.

I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on this computer, and it seems that, now, after
I choose to open in gedit the first time, new files open fine without more
troubles. Still believe that this should be default behaviour, though :))

regards Jonas:))

2009/9/24 Sebastien Bacher seb...@ubuntu.com

the reason it behaves differently on local and non-local locations is
that it's using the file content on local drives to know what to use but
it would be expensive to load the file in other cases

[Bug 435579] Re: Archive Mounter cannot mount single-file archives like .bz2

2009-09-24 Thread Endolith
I'm not sure what you mean by opening the archive. Archive Mounter
does not show up in the context menu for these files, and if you try to
make it work through Open with Other Application, it does nothing, as
far as I can tell.

Opening a .tar.bz2 immediately creates a mount point on the desktop.
Opening a .bz2 through the custom command menu does nothing.

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your

[Bug 261499] Re: gnome terminal crashes when changing profile

2009-09-24 Thread Tom Womack
This is a particularly frustrating bug to replicate, since it kills all
your gnome-terminal windows over all your desktops and completely
derails your train of thought; I've had it happen in ubuntu-8.04 64-bit
both when changing the size of the scrollback buffer (to something
enormous; I prefer 8MB of scrollback in each tab) and when setting
scroll-on-keystroke.

Having two windows, one with two tabs, and while true; do ls -l /tmp;
done in all three tabs made this problem appear even when I just changed
the terminal bell setting!

[Bug 130997] Re: Non-Linux hidden files like Thumbs.db should be treated the same as .filename

2009-09-24 Thread dfalk
So does this mean that nothing will be done at all?

Besides, I can think of cases beyond Thumbs.db, where it would be nice
to have a way of hiding files. Pesky .pyc files are a good example.
Nautilus already does its own hiding of files, such as files ending with
~, so why is this a big problem?

Also, sometimes folders will get copied from one filesystem to another,
and so hiding Thumbs.db on a filesystem that looks like Windows, only to
have it appear on an ext4 partition after copying, doesn't seem like a
much better solution. Of course I'm not sure if that's what the
filesystem specific checks would imply, but it's a potential problem.

[Bug 435928] [NEW] Password works in virtual terminal but not in Gnome screensaver

2009-09-24 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

I've got an EEE PC running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04:
$ uname -a
Linux hostname 2.6.28-15-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP tue Aug 18 18:40:08 UTC 2009
i686 GNU/Linux
$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04
$ apt-cache policy gnome-screensaver
[...]
Installed: 2.24.0-0ubuntu6

After leaving it for a long time (probably 24+ hours) locked (using
Ctrl-Alt-L), I'm unable to login with my regular password in Gnome. I've
verified that I'm using the right input mode (US Dvorak) by clicking
Leave Message and typing the password there. I've also changed the
input mode to my second option, Norwegian, and typed the password (it's
all a-zA-Z0-9 characters). I also verified that I'm able to log in in
the first virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1) with the same password.

This problem has not occurred before.

I'll postpone rebooting in case you know anything else I could try to
fix this.
