Re: [Bug 419143] Re: Printing from evince (and perhaps other GTK apps) to PostScript printers is broken

2009-10-16 Thread Pascal Grossé
Maybe the bug you encountered is different from mine, because in my case
evince failed silently to print, and now it works again. I never had an
error message (but the printer made its caracteristic heating noise each
time, as it probably received something, just didn't know how to deal with).

todays updates (2.28.0ubuntu4) doesnt seem to help the issue (was the fix
 reverted ?!?).
*photon* and some of my pdfs still will fail to print with ps error
undefined command 0a on my brother dcp-8065n - otoh okular will print them
 without issues.
laymans question: doesnt this hint that indeed evince/gtk/gnome etc is
faulty and neither gs nor cups ?

[Bug 452642] [NEW] The 'x is an executable text file' dialogue is not user friendly

2009-10-16 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I originally raised this as an idea on the brainstorm, but was told it
should be reported as a bug by the brainstorm admin (the brainstorm is
here: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/21745/).

When you click on an executable text file, such as a script to which
you've just made a change which you want to test, a dialogue appears
asking if you want to open it, run it, run it in a terminal, or cancel.
I think this dialogue is severely flawed.

Why aren't the two run buttons next to each other? Why isn't cancel on
the far left where it usually is? What if I want to edit the file
instead of displaying it (I know the Display button /actually/ opens it
for editing, but it doesn't say that)? Why can't I tell it to stop
asking me every time I click on the file, if I always want to do the
same thing? And why is the dialogue so cluttered?

My solution is as follows:

- Move Cancel to the far left, because that's where we've come to expect it to
be
- Rename the Display button Display/Edit, because that's what it's for
- Get rid of the Run in Terminal option, but put a Run in Terminal tick box
under the Run button, because the dialogue is cluttered
- Add a Remember my Choice tick box

It occurs to me that this is probably trivial to fix - could it be a
paper-cut? I don't know if you could say it effects lots of users, but
it does happen on any executable file. I know that the last thing my
mum wants to see when she clicks an executable file is a scary technical
sounding dialogue - if we could simplify it (by reducing the number of
buttons) and give her a remember my choice option so that she doesn't
get bothered with it every time, she'd be a lot happier.

[Bug 413399] Re: [Karmic] [i945] Screen flickers due to constantly changing brightness level

2009-10-16 Thread Jonathan Reeve
I'm having a similar issue, I think. In GDM, the brightness fluxuates
between roughly 80-90%, and only stops when I'm fully logged in. Once
I'm logged in, the brightness will stay the same (usually very low) and
if I attempt to change it, it will fluxuate between values. For example,
if I tune the brightness down to around 30%, it will fluxuate between
roughly 30-40%, and same goes for every setting. I haven't tried
manually setting the brightness levels with a command yet, because I
don't know what that command would be.

2009-10-16 Thread Peter Gervai
I do not ubuntu :-) so maybe my comments aren't welcome, but since I'm
following the life of this bug here as well as on gnome bugzilla I've
observed the latest comments...

I think this bug is important for evince usage (not grave though), but
fixing it isn't easy.

OTOH suggested workaround (lpr) isn't really good unless you conjure up
how to set _all_ the printing options, which is (as far as I remember)
not really possible. Printing without these is crappy at best, if not
outright useless, considering the wide range of pdf material available,
which may require different resolution, color mode, and optimalisations
to set. I don't think it would be a good workaround, not to mention
solution.

case the file the file was dot0.jpg. Send the email.

Expected result:

Recipient sees Image inline.

Actual result:
-
Image is not in the message as it wasn't sent as part of the email. If you go
into the Sent folder and look at the source of the email you will see the
following:

--=-8CEnx4CokdqB8sI3Kewb
Content-Type: text/plain
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Hello

Goodbye

--=-8CEnx4CokdqB8sI3Kewb

GoodbyeBR

/BODY
/HTML

--=-8CEnx4CokdqB8sI3Kewb--

The image holder is tagged like an external image but there is nothing in the
source field. For emails sent from Gmail you would see something like
src=cid:ii_12457b63379b47d9 and then an additional part of the email to
encode the image with the same content-id (i.e. --0016e6d566adb835cc0475f6a2b9
Content-Type: image/png; name=dots_black.png
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-ID: ii_12457b63379b47d9
X-Attachment-Id: ii_12457b63379b47d9)

In actual fact the email doesn't even have to go externally. If you
alter your smtp settings so it will fail to send then you can view the
source in your outbox and it will be missing the image info.

Surely being able to insert an image is a basic feature that should have
been working years ago?

BTW I have verified this on a two different machines and a variety of
new and old user accounts.

SO anyway, I have attached a screenshot of the menu that does not work.
As you can see, I am connected to msn and I see my contacts. I just
tried again this morning, and it still does not work. On my computer it
is easy to reproduce, but it sounds weird that noone else gets this bug.

[Bug 427462] Re: login screen is showing user below 1000

unix has tradition to have UIDs 500 to be user accounts. debian
changed that for whatever reason - probably because they thoguth they
run out of uids soon.

i have a uid 501 and now i dont see my main user account anymore. I have
that uid for about 10 years and carry it around etc.

[Bug 452679] Re: nautilus on drag n drop to network drive kills desktop

2009-10-16 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 370727] Re: connected to Internet through mobile broadband connection . the system monitor on the panel does not show any activity while opening the system monitor shows the activity.

2009-10-16 Thread jbatista
I see network activity in the Resources tab, but the small docked window
in the tray bar shows no activity.

Could it be that the tray bar dock window is scaled too high to show
activity (i.e. 100Mbit when the mobile network doesn't go beyond 512kbit
for example)?

[Bug 452940] [NEW] Don't clear the screen when switching to the alternate screen

2009-10-16 Thread Howard Chu
Public bug reported:

I filed this bug and a patch upstream already but the patch has been
ignored. It's getting pretty annoying having to fix this manually all
the time.

The VT100 command sequences CSI ? 47l (switch to primary screen) and CSI
? 47h (switch to alternate screen) are supposed to be non-destructive.
Currently libvte always clears the alternate screen when you switch to
it, making it useless. I.e., if you just listed some data in the alt
screen, flipped back to the primary, and wanted to see the alt screen
again you can't because it gets erased.

The most obvious case where this occurs is using vi, more, less, man, or
any other curses-based program. The init string switches to the alt
screen, and exiting the program returns to the primary screen. I
frequently need to flip back to see what I was just looking at, but it's
always erased upon flipping.

You can see the bug using the Gnome terminal or the xfce terminal, since
they're both built on libvte. You can see the mostly-correct behavior
using xterm.

You can use 'echo -ne \033[' for the CSI sequence. I use these aliases
in my .bashrc:

alias xt0='echo -ne \033[?47l'
alias xt1='echo -ne \033[?47h'

xt0 switches to the primary screen, xt1 switches to the alt screen.

[Bug 451538] Re: Update translations. They are out of date.

2009-10-16 Thread David Planella
Hi Alexey,

gnome-disk-utility follows the same workflow of all GNOME applications,
and the translations are imported as soon as there is a new upstream
release. I am guessing that the upstream translation was completed after
the 2.28.0 release, and thus was not included in the tarballs and
therefore not imported. It should get imported when the 2.28.1 release
comes out.

In any case, Ubuntu translators can easily import the translations
themselves straight away, and they will be included in language packs,
which is one of the advantages of using Launchpad.

Here's how you can do it:

1. Download the upstream translation from Vertimus
2. Go to
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/gnome-disk-utility/+pots/gnome-disk-utility/ru/+upload
 to manually import the translation
3. Go to the Browse... entry in the form and browse to the file you downloaded
from upstream
4. Choose Imported translation, since you will be importing an upstream
translation
5. Click on Upload
6. Done! Depending on server load, it might take some time to import the
translation, which you will be able to track in the import queue link you will
be shown.

[Bug 452294] Re: Select a contact is greyed out when trying to send a file using Empathy through nautilus.

2009-10-16 Thread Johannes Lørup
OK.

That's fair enough I guess. I really hope it gets implemented before
9.10 is released for real and Empathy is standard over pidgin. Pidgin
sends files just fine with the msn protocol, so a lot of people would be
disappointed about the new IM client. Those people include me.

Good work on the fast answering though.

[Bug 452987] [NEW] Options bar needs two clicks on Gnome (first time only flashes).

2009-10-16 Thread Sergio
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Sorry I reported from inside a Gnome game (I don't know how to launch the bug
report independently) but this is affecting the Gnome (2.28.0) environment as a
whole in Karmic(since I freshly installed the Beta).
The bars that offer options (I attached a screenshot to show what I'm referring
to but the screenshot won't work with the option expanded), when not previously
selected, flashes at the first click and only opens at the second one. This
doesn't happen always, it seems sometimes it works well.
