[Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it
Robert: Thanks for the summary. I'm going to prepare a little table for the studio audience to try to make things clearer, especially since you correctly pointed out in comment #27 that there's ambiguity over whether I'm talking about bell.ogg or the squarewave beep coming out of line-out (whoops). I can probably get to that within the next 24 hours; if not, it'll happen maybe Sunday sometime. The idea is to summarize the motherboard line-out behavior with and without the rmmod/modprobe fandango in an X-less console, in bare X (xinit), and in gnome/metacity. (I'm not going to try compiz unless someone thinks it's necessary; if I did that, I'd do it from a LiveCD to avoid potentially side-effecting my current Karmic install.) Re the rmmod/modprobe fandango: I'm not the only person who needs to do this. In fact, it would never have occurred to me that it would even change the behavior if I hadn't seen it mentioned in bug #398161 (see comments #1 and #2 in this thread, where Philip asked if I'd tried that workaround). So it's clearly not just me. However, I hadn't realized you were testing on a laptop. I think that to really disentangle things, testers need to try this on a desktop, where you can tell absolutely where the sound is coming from, given that laptops seem to route what I'd call line-out directly to their onboard speaker unless you've got something plugged into the line-out connector---that muddies the water. On a desktop, my motherboard speaker is independent of whether I've got anything cabled into line-out, so I can differentiate conditions that I think you can't. On a larger note, this might be a problem with Ubuntu in general on this issue---if most of the developers working on these subsystems do their work on laptops, they may not see the issue! [Bug 455241] Re: New windows steal focus
WeatherGod: here's what is happening for me with Compiz activated: - I click on Firefox icon to launch it. - While Firefox is loading, I click on a terminal and start typing text. - Now, the Firefox window finally appears in front of the terminal, but the focus is still on the terminal. That means that I can continue typing text into the terminal, but the Firefox window is hiding the terminal window. Using plain metacity, the behaviour is even worse: when the Firefox window appears, it steals focus from the terminal, which means that it appears in front of the terminal AND new key strokes appear in the Firefox window. I think that Compiz behaviour is almost perfect. The only problem is that the newly opened Firefox window should appear behind the terminal window, and the Firefox entry in the window list should be blinking to indicate that it's now ready to use. As for your second question, if I open an EOG window from Nautilus, I expect the EOG window to get focus except if I interact with the Nautilus window before the EOG window appears. -- New windows steal focus https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/455241 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-desktop in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Some more clarification: 1. Starting from ubuntu version 9.10 the system beep has been replaced from a sound coming from the sound card. 2. If you load the module pcspkr you can ear a sound coming from the pc speaker but the system don't use it (only at the shut down or with the beep command) 3. If you load the module snd_pcsp you can ear a beep coming from the suond card but the system don't use it (only at the shut down or with the beep command) 4. OK, sorry for all of this. It would appear that the problem may have been that Evolution was NOT actually selected within Preferred Applications. [Bug 495128] [NEW] Cannot free the usb-stick memory by deleting it's components
You have been subscribed to a public bug: The operating system in which I found this bug is : Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, 64-bit version Without using Usb Startup Disk Creator or any other program, I simply want to delete data from my usb stick. I expect that the usb stick's memory would be freed, in other words, that I will have free memory in the stick in the quantity equal with the size of the deleted data. Instead of this, if I choose to delete data by pressing the button delete from the keyboard, the file disappear from the pane and rubbish fill up. Then I check the usb stick form properties and I find that the memory has not been freed, it is the same as before I delete the chosen data. That happens even if I empty the rubbish folder. If I choose to delete data by transfer to rubbish option, it happens exactly the same as I described above. I later connected the usb stick in windows xp, and I found that the data I wished to delete were still 'untouched' in a file named Trash. I hope you consider this report. [Bug 495449] Re: Totem crash by file add
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. [Bug 384881] Re: Samba/Nautilsus/gvfs - Failed to retrieve share list from server
I'm having a hard time with the assignment of a Low importance here. This is a MAJOR wart. I have five Jaunty systems and one Karmic system, and NONE of them do this right. Some of those computers were clean installs, others were upgraded from previous versions. Googling this message, I find that most of the complaints are pointed at Ubuntu. Even if this IS an upstream bug, we should be working on it. I'd file the bug in the upstream Bugzilla myself, but I find myself expecting to be scoffed at as I can't provide enough technical detail. I've dug in as far as I can without reading the source code... I suspect it's mostly a gvfs problem, since the affected systems can't see standard Windows systems on the same network (so, unless I'm missing something here, it's not a Samba bug). There is an extensive discussion of this problem here: http://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1082148 This is the the category of those bugs that are far too obvious. It makes us look BAD. My wife, who is not a bit technical, went a bit nuts when she learned that this doesn't work... she's accustomed to browsing to network resources, something that does not work since we left Intrepid. If I can't sell it to her, how can I sell it to actual customers? -- Samba/Nautilsus/gvfs - Failed to retrieve share list from server https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/384881 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
