[Bug 434475] Re: Samsung YP-K3 Media player device error

2010-01-19 Thread PhilippeB.
Hi,

Seems I have this same bug with karmic/Rhythmbox and my Samsung YP-K3 Media
player :
Rhythmbox opens the library on my player only if I plug it in while the
software is already running; If Rhythmbox is not running, it starts when I plug
the player in, but no MTP library is shown.
Furthermore, if I try to add music to the device, after uploading a few songs,
there's a message saying:
PTP Layer error 02fc: get_first_storage_freespace(): could not get storage
info.

I enclose a screenshot.

What information do you need to continue to investigate?

Regards,

[Bug 509509] [NEW] non-default color theme corrupted after gnome-settings-daemon restart

2010-01-19 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

In Lucid (up-to-date as of 2010-01-17, gnome-terminal 2.28.1-1ubuntu1),
whenever gnome-settings-daemon dies, the color theme of open Gnome-
Terminal sessions changes, as expected. The colors change to black on
light gray (#dcdad5), which apparently is Gnome-Terminal's own default.

One would expect the colors to change back when gnome-settings-daemon is
started again.

However, the colors don't change back to what is set in the profile.
Instead I get a strange dark gray (#1a1a1a) on light pink (#e6ddd5)
color theme.

Selecting another color theme and switching back to the original in
Profile Preferences does fix the colors back to normal.

This is especially annoying as I've changed the default system color theme to
the Gray on black built-in theme in Gnome-Terminal. In this case the colors
are
- gray on light gray after gnome-settings-daemon dies
- gray on light pink after gnome-settings-daemon is restarted

Due to this bug I've noticed that it's not rare for gnome-settings-
daemon to restart. It does that when gnome packages are updated (very
often at this point in Lucid), and sometimes for no apparent reason.

[Bug 406515] Re: [Karmic] Brightness fn keys lost functionality (Lenovo laptops)

mmh, not overly happy to have this bug hijacked to be only about
Lenovo after 6 months (granted that the initial report is about a Lenovo
though :-) ). I have filed bug 509508 for my MacBook4,1 which has
exactly the same issue still. I do think that these 2 bugs are closely
related though.

I'm sorry but if the goal is to improve usability then adding more
options to a dialog (especially the ones mentioned) is in my view not
the right way to go about this. Instead you should ask the distributor
of VirtualBox to package their stuff.

[Bug 475845] Re: delay on printing dialog in evince

2010-01-19 Thread Wojtek Kazimierczak
Well, not exactly. Our bug has been probably caused by this patch.

Marek Kasik proposed another solution, which is: to revert commit named 'Speed
up printer listing in the
print dialog' in gtk (SHA1 ID: dd52987d1fe3c3481fffc5b776fcac6b02114b01). Those
timeouts are too short
for the socket probably. This workaround helps if it is not related to the
socket (e.g. remote print server).

He will have a look at this code perhaps this week, but it doesn't mean
that we'll get the updates very soon. The solution provided by Marek
above
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/475845/comments/29)
works fine for me.

No, on my computer, the bug does not seem to be related to the length of

[Bug 492240] Re: Add an option in Nautilus' preferences to not show mounted partitions on desktop

2010-01-19 Thread Bruce van der Kooij
This bug is filed upstream as
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=606848

Ignoring for a moment whether it is even useful to expose this
configuration setting somewhere in the user interface, I have to say
that I do not think this belongs in the Nautilus preferences dialog just
because it is Nautilus who provides the desktop view (something a lot of
people aren't even aware of, so how would they know to look here?)

However, I cannot figure out where this option would fit in, though I do
believe a configuration applet would be the most appropriate. If you are
willing to work on this you might want to discuss this on the usability
list (http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/usability), however before
doing so I would advise one to:

  1) Create a convincing use case as to why it would even be useful to have
this setting exposed.
  2) Suggest a place where this setting would be exposed
  3) Possibly create a user interface mockup

The possibilites I considered were:

  * Appearances (gnome-appearance-properties) -- However, last I checked
some on the GNOME team were contemplating to remove the Interface tab
from the applet, so among some there is already some apprehension to put
more options in here.

  * Removable Drives and Media (thunar-volman-settings) -- This is
focused on providing options related to how to handle mounted media, but
I don't think an interface option really belongs in there.

Thanks.

[Bug 460941] Re: Hard to find out which file used as icon

2010-01-19 Thread Bruce van der Kooij
Sebastien, your motivations for having this sent upstream intrigue me
and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter. ;-)

I'd like to point out that it is possible to figure out the filename
using the icon name (see below for some Python code), so it would be
possible to have the file chooser start with this file selected.
However, ideally this isn't the route we want to take. Instead the file
chooser in this instance should be replaced by a dialog tailored towards
the job at hand, findings icons.

That's going to require a bit of effort though and the Nautilus team can
use any help they can get, so if you're interested in working on this,
you'll want to start with writing a specification (rationale, use cases,
user interface mockups). Some examples of specifications can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CategorySpec (template:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SpecSpec) and
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features (for example:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/UserAccountDialog).

An elaborate example of a specification can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotifyOSD

I'll keep an eye on this report.

--

Here's some Python code which would allow you to lookup the filename for
an icon name:

import gtk
icontheme = gtk.icon_theme_get_default()
iconinfo = icontheme.lookup_icon('totem', size=256,
flags=gtk.ICON_LOOKUP_USE_BUILTIN)
print iconinfo.get_filename()
... /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/totem.svg

Had you gone with size=24 then it would have selected the PNG instead.

[Bug 392488] Re: Empathy could use an Ubuntu-specific Adium theme

2010-01-19 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
Did you backport the fixes to the fader and scrollbar?

Now I remember I did lots of other changes, Unfortunately I don't
remember exactly what I did, because it was long ago, maybe 1 year or
more, but I'll try to remember:

- I edited the font colors, which weren't used with consistency. And maybe I
didn't change things accordingly to the possibility to have color variants.
- I then changed Context.html and NextContext.html, which are responsable of
handling history messages (conversation logs): I greyed out them and added the
word BACKLOG (which is not really what a user should expect, also because the
string is not internationalized)
-I moved the time (removing the seconds and keeping only the HH:MM format) to
the end of the message, so every new message which is appended to the first one
will show when it was sent. I also tried to add the day and month in history
message, but I wasn't able to do it.
- I added a buddy icon border, because If you choose to have a background of
another color, a blank image looks really bad without a border.

Tell me what do you think about these changes, and try to review and
improve them (I'm not an expert)

Regarding your comments on bug 379944: I'm not sure how Edubuntu people
work, but you're working on a fix based on the release in Karmic! In
Lucid the column headers are gone, so that can't be fixed that way.

Could you explain what's the main use case that justifies we need
sorting users? I think we should make the default sorting more useful
then, e.g. sorting by login instead of keeping the order from

2010-01-19 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 477324 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477324

Agreed with Will. 1) is duplicate of bug 477324.

2) is fixed in Lucid since we no longer require people to unlock the dialog to
show/change settings.
3) would be a whishlist bug, which should be handled separately. Not sure that
will happen though, if you want to manage group membership, that what the
groups dialog is for, we won't add more complex settings in the user part (but
see how this fits better in the new GUI in Lucid).
4) is not a bug in users-admin, likely something with PolicyKit. You should
open a new report about that if authentication doesn't work, we'll see what
happens.

[Bug 509411] Re: lock doesn't lock

2010-01-19 Thread Tomas Pospisek
You are right, thanks Chris. The screen saver is disabled there.

However, the current architecture/concept is not consistent in itself:

- what for is there an icon, when it doesn't have any effect?

- why doesn't clicking the icon start the required programm
  (gnome-screen-saver) by itself?

- why isn't there any feedback about why nothing happens when I tell the
computer to do some action (lock the screen) and it doesn't do it?

- why is it necessary to occupy virtual memory and CPU cycles with a programm
(gnome-screensaver), when the programm doesn't do anything useful during
its life? Locking the screen is an active action from the user and thus
gnome-screensaver can be startet and stoped when it is not needed?

- why does it have an effect to click on the lock icon but not any effect to
click on the shutdown icon and choose Lock Screen?

** Changed in: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu)

[Bug 259163] Re: users-admin does not sort when Name/Login/Homedir field clicked

2010-01-19 Thread Gavin McCullagh
It's a while since I've actually looked at this. There was a bug day
coming up among edubuntu developers and I mentioned this bug as one
which was causing problems for some people. Jordan said he had a fix,
though I'm not sure what version that was against.

On an LTSP system, it's not uncommon to have hundreds of users. As it
was, the gnome users-admin showed an (effectively) unsorted list of
people which made it very difficult to use with large numbers of
accounts. For this reason, some users had installed the KDE user admin
tool.

  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/edubuntu-
users/2009-June/thread.html#5363

(the thread entitled Directory tools for Edubuntu server)

The first step that seemed worthwhile was to fix sorting of users so you
could find people. Searching might also help.

Does the new version add some feature to help in this scenario?

[Bug 509411] Re: lock doesn't lock when gnome-screensaver not running in the background

2010-01-19 Thread Chris Coulson
gnome-screensaver is a session agent designed to be started when you log
in, as it's needed for monitoring the session idle-ness and
automatically activating the screensaver. It doesn't need to be
activated when you try to lock the screen, as it should already be
running.

The other points you make are separate issues with the session applet

[Bug 508947] Re: Evolution crashes when trying to open emails containing .eml attachments

2010-01-19 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-
file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where
_my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 259163] Re: users-admin does not sort when Name/Login/Homedir field clicked

2010-01-19 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
The new users-admin is not really best designed for systems with
hundreds of users, since it takes more vertical space than the old one:
see the column on the left of the dialog at [1]. I'm not sure that's a
real problem, though. What we could do is sort users by login, and use
gtk_tree_view_set_search_column() so that you can type-ahead the
beginning of the login to find an user. How does that sound to you and
Edubuntu people?

(Anyway, the biggest problem for now is that we don't support LDAP, but
that's another story...)

This bug is not high in my priority list since I have to fix all
regressions before we enter feature/UI/string freeze, and then I'll
start tackling this kind of little issues.

[Bug 406515] Re: [Karmic] Brightness fn keys lost functionality (Lenovo laptops)

2010-01-19 Thread David Tombs
Hi spaetz, sorry about the hijacking, but I have been trying to take
action on this apparently-stalled bug and just realized that it had
actually originally been hijacked from being a Lenovo-specific bug. It's
quite possible your bug and this one are related, but until that can be
confirmed it's much more useful to developers to have different bug
reports. (And the vague title was bringing in people who I'm sure don't
have the same exact issue.)

Sorry for the inconvenience, but I think it's worth it!

[Bug 509621] [NEW] Evolution crashes while displaying emails containing .eml attachments

2010-01-19 Thread Kayvee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I received a forwarded email from a coworker. The contents of this email
show up inline in Thunderbird. However, when I am using Evolution, the
email shows up as having .eml attachments. When I click on the
attachment button to display its contents inline, evolution crashes.

I am currently using Karmic (64 bit). In Jaunty (32 bit), I have the
same problem - I cannot open the .eml attachment inline. However, in
Jaunty, Evolution does not crash. It displays an error saying that it is
unable to save the attachment.

Apport suggested I submit the complete report. But it is 152 MiB and

uploaded only the smaller report. If you need the complete report, I can
