[Bug 392043] Re: Drop a selection on a hidden window (Nautilus, gedit, Firefox, Thunderbird, anything) is not possible

2010-02-19 Thread srgb
Sorry, I've been away for a while from Linux systems.
Seems that we've misunderstood each other about the patch.
I only proposed the way to solve the problem, with out doing actual patch - I
simply don't know how to do the one :)

If you point me on the doc page describing the process of doing the
patch, patching, and testing the patched system, I'd be glad to try to
follow it.

Thanks!

[Bug 511729] Re: Empathy didn't import contacts from gaim/pidgin

2010-02-19 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Right.

It seems to me that the problem is caused by having two IRC accounts
with the same username, which I have because I have one for Freenode,
Mozilla, Gnome etc.

If I select only one Luna-Tick IRC account (no matter which), the
import succeeds (though there is no user feedback at all and you have to
go into the Accounts to see it has worked -- is this normal?)

Please let me know if I can give any further information.

[Bug 524301] [NEW] Evolution slow when switching mails [delayed formatting]

2010-02-19 Thread Vish
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

This is a recent regression in Lucid.
Since the last evolution update. Every time i select a new message there is a
considerable delay to open new mail [nearly 1sec, seems small delay but it is
noticeable only since the last update. ]

Everytime i select a new mail it displays formatting message... , I
notice a spike in evolution CPU usage and then the message gets
displayed. Most importantly this is with plain text messages which i
dont think deserve the delays. [I use evolution only for LP mail and
mailing lists]

[Bug 521038] Re: Backspace deletes all input

2010-02-19 Thread Ondřej Surý
I don't think it's locale related.

More like xkbmap related.

If you diff src/gtk.c, you'll find out they have added new keyboard
shortcuts CTRL-BKSP and SHIFT-DEL to clear whole display. But apparently
something is wrong in that function.

[Bug 519583] Re: can't add, move, unlock applets no clock

2010-02-19 Thread Didier Roche
Right,

This is by design and due to some technical issues.
If you choose the Ubuntu Netbook Edition session, the panel is locked.
If you choose the GNOME session (which is new in lucid for UNE), you have your
traditional GNOME session.

LaserJock will provide a documentation for people really wanting to
change their panel, but you will lost your GNOME session then.

xtrace -D:9 -d:0 -k 21 | tee ~/xtrace.log
DISPLAY=:9.0 gnome-screensaver

(Assuming that :0.0 is your current X display)

I suspect that only users of the proprietary NVIDIA driver will see this
now in lucid, as everyone else will get the nice RANDR gamma fade
instead.

[Bug 523949] Re: after upgrade to 2.19.5-1ubuntu3 rhythmbox hogs the cpu while playing

2010-02-19 Thread Vish
Causes problems in evolution too...
Every time i select a new message there is a considerable delay to open new
mail [nearly 1sec, seems small delay but it is noticeable only since the last
update. ]

Every time i select a new mail it displays formatting message... , I
notice a spike in evolution CPU usage and then the message gets
displayed. Most importantly this is with plain text messages which i
dont think deserve the delays. [I use evolution only for LP mail and
mailing lists]

[Bug 524304] [NEW] [xorg-edgers] High CPU usage with murrine progressbars

2010-02-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: xorg

Since today's update :
xorg (1:7.5+1ubuntu2) to 1:7.5+1ubuntu3
xserver-xorg (1:7.5+1ubuntu2) to 1:7.5+1ubuntu3
xserver-xorg-input-all (1:7.5+1ubuntu2) to 1:7.5+1ubuntu3
xserver-xorg-video-all (1:7.5+1ubuntu2) to 1:7.5+1ubuntu3
xserver-xorg-video-ati (1:6.12.99+git20100215.47136fa3-0ubuntu0sarvatt) to
1:6.12.99+git20100218.a3b730ec-0ubuntu0sarvatt
xserver-xorg-video-radeon (1:6.12.99+git20100215.47136fa3-0ubuntu0sarvatt) to
1:6.12.99+git20100218.a3b730ec-0ubuntu0sarvatt

I noticed that the Xorg CPU usage is ~40% only when xchat window was open.
this seems to be due to the progressbars.
It happens only If I enable view network meters graph [which is a progress
bar]

Also happens when I use the widget factory to preview themes. There is a
progressbar preview which shows how the theme will render the
progressbar.

This happens only when the murrine engine is rendering the progressbar.
[does not happen with clearlooks/industrial engines]

Also happens when updating the repos using the reload in synaptic.
similar to Bug #355355 , but now even higher CPU usage , previously it
was ~30% , now ~40%

But does not happen with the progressbars in Transmission bittorrent
client or the progress bars in evolution during send/recieve.

[Bug 36151] Re: Clicking a second time on the Trash applet should close it, not open a second instance

2010-02-19 Thread David Siegel
1. It's not trivial to fix because window tracking is involved, so it's not a
paper cut.
2. The solution described doesn't cover common cases where users actually want
to open the trash window, but have unknowingly left another trash window
minimized/underneath another window/on another workspace.

[Bug 327872] Re: Broken support for AVCHD (MTS/M2TS)

2010-02-19 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Jean-François Fortin Tam: AVCHD is about H.264 codec but the codec
output is stored inside an MPEG transport stream and stored on media as
binary files (as explained on the wikipedia page you linked to). See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD#Specifications for details, notice
especially the part Stream type: MPEG transport stream.

A camcorder that stores the H.264 codec output in a .mov container is
not AVCHD conforming, if I've understood correctly.

H.264 codec works already fine with gstreamer, the problem is M2TS (or
.MTS in 8.3 file system) container format used to store the H.264 codec
output. VLC is already able to play H.264 stored inside M2TS container
modulo some bugs (such as not being able to correctly skip in the middle
of the file).

[Bug 449188] Re: Closing laptop lid doesn't cause the screen to go blank

2010-02-19 Thread Jimmy Merrild Krag
I have investigated further, and it seems like all my settings in gnome-
power-preferences are ignored when I boot my computer on battery power.

If I put my computer in suspend mode and resume it, everything seems to
start working. My display turns off when I close the lid, and further
more, my monitor dims after a short period of no use, which is another
issue I have (Does anyone know a bug number for this?).

Does anyone have similar issues?

[Bug 327872] Re: Broken support for AVCHD (MTS/M2TS)

2010-02-19 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Jean-François Fortin Tam: You're right that HDV is a different format
from AVCHD. On the other hand, the letters HDV in the summary seems to
be short for high definition video contrary to HDV format which
officially does not have an explanation for the letters. I agree that
the use of letters HDV in this context is ambiguous and the summary
could do better without it.

experience this bug. Kill evolution-data-server before you start

[Bug 524422] [NEW] GDM crashes with '' in passwd entry

2010-02-19 Thread Anders Ossowicki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The GDM greeter will crash (and be respawned indefinitely) whenever the
GECOS-field of an entry in /etc/passwd contains an ''-sign (ampersand).
Attached is the output from /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log.

[Bug 519583] Re: can't add, move, unlock applets no clock

2010-02-19 Thread Didier Roche
No bug on the gnome project about that AFAIK. Supporting multiple GNOME
session with different user configuration isn't available upstream and
something we did into ubuntu. However, being able to edit the added
session is really tricky in case of GNOME panel and shouldn't land in a
LTS.

That's why the workaround will be the documentation LaserJock will
write, but unfortunately, you won't be able anymore to have a dedicated
GNOME session you can choose in GDM. So, that's some kind of tradeoff.

It can happen under various circumstances:
  - a bug in libxklavier library
  - a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
  - X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation

  X server version data:
  The X.Org Foundation

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
  - The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
  - The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
+
+
+ And this is the information requested:
+
+ 12:51:3...@x11 xprop -root | grep XKB
+ _XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = evdev, pc105, us, mac,
+ _XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = evdev, pc105, us, mac,

+ model = macbook78
+
+
+ The same alert often also appears in other situations, for example, when

[Bug 521640] Re: ubuntu struck on login screen, message: 'the configuration defaults for the gnome power manager has not been installed correctly'

2010-02-19 Thread Justin Christian
Bug confirmed on my system. What seems to be happening is, after login,
gnome (xfce as well) is crashing and restarting the X server. Stopping
gdm/killing X and then using startx in the terminal seems to cause a
loop of some sort, as I am sent to a black screen, and I can't raise
elephants.

- dpkg-reconfigure gnome-power-manager has no effect;
- I was prompted by apt-get to run dpkg --configure -a, which had no effect
- reinstalling gnome-power-manager has no effect.

System is Xubuntu 9.10 running fglrx.

Ah, I understand. Personally I don't mind not being able to have a

aims at making the UNE experience work inside a standard gnome session

[Bug 524465] [NEW] Applets missing from panel

2010-02-19 Thread Christopher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Some applets are missing from the panel - currently the network applet
and a Wine one I use for checking multiple email accounts (poptray). I
can click between by hplip and bluetooth icons and the manager pops up.
Also, the clock is stuck at startup time.

I first noticed this some days ago on my desktop but put it down to the
usual nvidia glitches. Now it's on my laptop, while the clock on the
desktop is working fine now.

[Bug 327872] Re: Broken support for AVCHD (MTS/M2TS)

2010-02-19 Thread Danny Piccirillo
Updated title and description for clarity

** Description changed:

- AVCHD is the de facto standard for HDV (high definition video)
- camcorders and as such, Ubuntu users need a way to easily play, edit and
- see thumbnails of videos created.
+ MPEG transport stream (MPEG-TS) is used for HDV and AVCHD camcorders and
+ as such, Linux users need a way to easily play, edit and see thumbnails
+ of these videos. Video editing on Linux can't get very far when the de
+ facto standard for high-definition video isn't well-supported,
+ especially as more and more cameras are HD out of the box, and the
+ prices for such camcorders are falling.

Most of the problem seems to be from the MPEG-TS demuxer in GStreamer
[mpegtsdemux] which needs to be fixed or rewritten to support random
  access better, among other things.

- Video editing on Linux can't very far when the hi-def video standard

[Bug 21202] Re: Clipboard is erased after closing program. affects multiple programs.

2010-02-19 Thread Patrick Roberts
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 11334 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/11334

@mercury80:
Yes, you know where it needs to be fixed, I know where it needs to be fixed,
most of us know where it needs to be fixed, but the developers are cocky and
stubborn. They really don't care about the number of duplicates and the number
of comments on the original bug report and all of those duplicates. They just
don't want to fix it, so it's not going to happen.

Only real solution:
Stop using these kind of amateuristic operating systems. If you've got the
money, just buy a Mac. It also has Unix-roots, it's fast and stable and
everything just works. There's just a clipboard that works for all
applications. Mac OS X isn't created by some amateurs who try to write some
code in their spare time. Apple has a lot of professional developers who're
being paid and they know how which features are important and they've got the
skills to develop these features.

[Bug 301389] Re: Brightness applet does not work correctly on a Macbook

2010-02-19 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
** Description changed:

On a Macbook 1,1 , dragging the slider of the brightness applet causes
the screen to flicker ( brightness is adjusted afterwards though ).
Worse, if I just click on the - button to decrease the brightness, the
backlight is turned off completely rendering the screen unusable.

This is tested on Intrepid ( latest updates ) and is a regression to
  Hardy where it worked fine.

- See also bug 176648, the same problem on an iMac.
+ Not to be confused with bug 457882, where the brightness is not
+ adjustable at all in Ubuntu 9.10 and later.

[Bug 524491] [NEW] when connecting to a ftp server nautilus saves the wrong mount bookmark

2010-02-19 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm connecting to a FTP server and nautilus mounts it in the left pane.
But it saves it in the wrong way:
for example if I connect to ftp://localhost:2001 the saved item is
ftp://localhost:2001/%22/%22%20is%20current%20directory
so every time I want to access it it displays an error:
Could not display ftp://localhost:2001/%22/%22%20is%20current%20directory.;.

Umounting using the icon works

[Bug 498183] Re: Rhythmbox menu does not recognize the player state

2010-02-19 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Here's what I did to test this:

1. Launch Rhythmbox.
2. Minimize Rhythmbox.
3. From the status menu, choose Show Rhythmbox.
4. Bring another window in front of Rhythmbox.
5. From the status menu, choose Show Rhythmbox.

What should happen:
3. Rhythmbox is unminimized and focused.
5. Rhythmbox is brought to the front and focused.

What actually happens:
3. Rhythmbox is unminimized but not focused.
5. Rhythmbox is brought to the front but not focused.

I don't think the label for the menu item should change.

[Bug 524497] [NEW] Positioning of login screen 'panel' inconsistent with desktop's

2010-02-19 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

This has been bugging me for a long time now.

There's a usability issue with the login screen's panel being at the
bottom of the screen. It should be at the top, or at the very least the
elements that are present in both the login screen and the desktop (the
clock and shutdown menu) should be positioned consistently. It's very
confusing as it stands, with the clock and the shutdown function jumping
from the bottom of the login screen to the top of the desktop screen
when we log in.

Either the top of the screen is the accessibility-wise better place for
these elements, in which case they should be there *during the login
screen also*, or it isn't, in which case they shouldn't be there when we
get to the desktop *either*. They shouldn't be in one place on one
screen, in another place on another screen.

I'm attaching a fancy little split-screen diagram of what I'm getting
at, in addition to the stuff gathered by Apport. Sorry the picture uses
my native language, I should have switched the VM's language prior to
taking the screenshots. The shots are from an up-to-date Lucid, Apport's
data is from my host which is running Karmic.
