[Bug 419341] Re: gdu-notification-daemon crashed with signal 5 in __libc_start_main()

2010-04-01 Thread vmc
For me, I think the updated Ubiquity fixed this error.

The installer now completes and I no longer get this crash, using daily-
live dated Mar29th, and again on Mar31st.

This mtp-detect looks fine AFAIK. It detects image capabilities (PTP and
MTP are very similar), and says that libmtp does not know about this
device, which it shouldn't.

Michał Gołębiowski [2010-03-31 16:56 -]:
 Who in the world will want to actually remove the CD-ROM drive? AFAIK
 it would cause the drive to be unusable until a reboot so I cannot think
 who would really want anything like that...

Well, I do that, but indeed for CD-ROMs you can just yank the cable,
there's nothing to be written for them. It's a more interesting option
for iPods, card readers, etc. So for CD drives (which we can identify
reliably) we might remove the Safe removal option.

[Bug 532531] Re: No way to come back if fast user switcher is activated accidentally

2010-04-01 Thread Robert Ancell
Had a quick look at this, will try again next week. The issue appears
to be that pressing the cancel button destroys the dialog and creates a
new one that automatically selects the user again. The fix is to only
select the user the first time the dialog is created. I have to find
which layer of GDM is doing this...

[Bug 552555] [NEW] lucid upgrade terminal window too large and can't resize

2010-04-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The screensize on my hp netbook is 576 vertical, but I am running
standard Ubuntu, not the netbook remix.

I did the upgrade to the current lucid alpha and so far it has gone
better than anything since Gutsy, but the terminal window goes off the
bottom of the screen and I can't resize it or so anything else to make
the current activity (at the bottom of the screen) visible. You are
choosing a HUGE font, so simply using something smaller would work, or a
resizable text window would be best.

Please don't assume a huge screen for anything, especially for an
install where the hardware might not be fully recognized.

Try everything in 800x600 VESA and see if it works right.

Jef, it is certainly not the case that any OEM has directed these
changes. We do direct our original engineering to things that make
Ubuntu better for OEM customers, but we have complete independence as to
which way to lead Ubuntu. A lot of the OEM feedback is very valuable though.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-04-01 Thread Yann
Well, after dailly updates, dust that was sticky to it's right buttons
origins is now left... Error or... will all default themes be now left,
not only new ones?

I think users may know about what's going on to make their decision to
continue or not: A lot of things already have to be setup by hand to
have a working machine: Codecs, libdvdcss, flash... but that's the
understandable country legislation dependant side of the customisation.

Concerning theses buttons, I'm really fed-up: So final decision welcome!

[Bug 552442] Re: gcalctool 5.30.0 not showing bin/dec/hex radio buttons

2010-04-01 Thread Alessandro
I've seen that word size and base are in preferences but is not so easy to make
base conversions on the fly with that.
the old version has radio buttons that permits changing base (and obtain the
conversion) with just one click.
As a programmer (old C style...) I use a lot the conversion between hex, dec
and binary and the old solution with the radio buttons was easy and really fast
(as nice as the clickable bits!)

Here's a screenshot of the calc

thank you,

a.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-04-01 Thread Gürkan Sengün
The change of the buttons from the right to the left, with different order is a
fatal change.
Even I as an experienced computer user was annoyed. Having had a different
them, where all
buttons look the same, even on mouse over. So it was unclar which button did
close/maximize-minimize/hide...

Window Maker, having copied the design of NeXT/NeXTSTEP/OPENSTEP (what Apple
bought and made worse, design wise) was the best thing in my opinion. Having
the close and hide buttons on the far right, far left,
so nobody could accidently slip and press the wrong button, saving the user
from answering a stupid question like are you sure you want to close the
document without saving it...

Please consider for the sake of consistent user experience keeping it as
it was.

[Bug 271041] Re: fullscreen-plugin should be enabled by default

2010-04-01 Thread mrklister
This feels like a defacto standard since youtube started using it on
videos. Many new users will probably try this and then get annoyed when
they want to enlarge their picture and it does not work.

Know you have to go to the menu view and then fullscreen or F11. Most of
the normal mortal people I know avoids menus and they most certanly does
not know about F11. They will think that this is a crappy application
and use another instead.

* At least show a fullscreen button with the standard fullscreen icon
that shows that this is possible. But this is maybe another bug?

[Bug 553123] [NEW] A shortcut button to show image in Fullscreen/Slidehow i missing

2010-04-01 Thread mrklister
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

The user should be able to go to fullscreen without going in to the menu view
and then selecting Fullscreen or pressing F11.
Normal users avoid menus, and they most certainly are not aware of the F11
shortcut.
Do Ubuntu want people to watch/show their pictures in Eye of gnome or not? This
is a serious usability issue as I think at least.

There should also exist a shortcut button to show the slideshow.

[Bug 553139] [NEW] In Fullscreen mode: menu containing close fullscreen not found easily

2010-04-01 Thread mrklister
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

It is not that obvious hot to reach the fullscreen menu. For me there is no
problem but for a normal user may be annoyed or not understand what to do when
there are no menus after going to fullscreen.
The way to reach the buttons are to hover the mousepointer at the top of the
screen.

I propose that the the user experience when showing photos in
fullscreen/slideshow should be the same as when showing video in fullscreen.
This means shortly that the menus should be shown as the mouse is moved. When
the user stops moving the mouse the menu should disappear after a certain
timeout as in the Video player. There should be no inconsistency that can
confuse the user.

[Bug 532446] Re: empathy cannot access gnome-keyring at first run

2010-04-01 Thread Omer Akram
The situation is a bit different. If after boot I start empathy It wont
be able to access gnome-keyring but If after boot I wait 40secs a popup
for gnome-keyring comes automatically and If I provide the password and
then start empathy then empathy connects and also after giving password
to that popup MeMenu text field becomes visible. (Note: if I start
empathy just after boot then all symptoms are from this bug report)

Re: [Bug 516520] Re: lucid lynx - login screen stuck in a loop - SYSTEM BROKEN

2010-04-01 Thread CristianCantoro
I never had login issues, maybe should we fork the bugs (login issue /
desktop broken)?

2010/4/1 NoOp gl...@sbcglobal.net:
 Yep, setting to 'show the screen for choosing who will log in' breaks
 it. Can't unlock System|Administration|Login Screen.  If I log back in
 via the recovery/Ctrl-Alt-F1 mode I see that /etc/gdm/custom.conf has
 been modified to:

 [daemon]
 AutomaticLogin=username
 AlwaysLoginCurrentSession=false
 AutomaticLoginEnable=false
 TimedLoginEnable=false
 TimedLogin=username
 TimedLoginDelay=30
 DefaultSession=gnome

 Changing 'AutomaticLoginEnable=false' to 'AutomaticLoginEnable=true' and
 rebooting works autologin restores the desktop. Plus I can unlock
 System|Administration|Login Screen again (get prompted for a password,
 etc).

 System|Logout username|Log out|  and trying to login as another user
 results in the frozen mouse, and original issues. So the problem must be
 in the gdm configuration files somewhere.

[Bug 553162] [NEW] GDM and language-selector should agree on setting the LANG variable

2010-04-01 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

This is a follow-up to bug 407300, which has been fixed but a separate
issue remains. I'm opening a separate task for language-selector, as it
refers to the interaction between it and gdm.

The problem is basically that GDM seems to always override the LANG
values set by language selector, and quite easily one can get to a
situation where LANGUAGE and LANG differ and the desktop is a mixture of
two languages.

Steps to reproduce (a):

 * New install, choosing Catalan in the installer
 * I log in without doing any changes to the language in GDM
 * I start System Administration Language support
 * I choose English there
 * I log out
 * I log back in without doing any changes in the GDM language chooser
 * My session is half English and half Catalan due to LANGUAGE=en and
LANG=ca_ES.utf8 (Firefox in Catalan, gnome-panel in English, gnome-menus in
Catalan).

Steps to reproduce (b):

 * Perform a full installation in English, as per
http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Install/NonEnglishLanguage#Installation%20Full%20Network%20Support
 * Go to System Administration Language Support
 * Install the Traditional Chinese language
 * Bring Traditional Chinese to the top of the list to become the main desktop
language
 * Press the Apply System-wide... button
 * Reboot
 * When entering the session, you'll notice the desktop half translated in
English, half in Chinese. The most noticeable parts shown in English are all
the menus and Firefox. These applications seem to ignore the LANGUAGE variable
 * Running 'locale' on the terminal shows that LANG=en_US.UTF-8 and
LANGUAGE=zh_K:en_US:en

I understand that this might be a problem in each application, as they
should give LANGUAGE preference. Rather than filing a bug in each app
right now, would it not make more sense to ensure that at least the
first locale in LANGUAGE, the one in LANG and LC_MESSAGES are the same?
(assuming it is possible to do such a thing, of course).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This particular bug has already been reported and is a
duplicate of bug 270206, so it is being marked as such. Please look at
the other bug report to see if there is any missing information that you
can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for the bug.
Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in
the other report. Please continue to report any other bugs you may
find.

This bug has become more easy to notice since the app-indicator work.
Others on #ubuntu+1 also keep mentioning that they noticed this problem
only now. But it is the same old bug. RB starts minimized to tray when
previous session was minimized and closed from the menu.
