[Bug 539396] Re: rhytmbox cannot see my iphone

2010-05-06 Thread eddiewould
I realised that while my install was clean, my home directory was not (I
keep it on a separate partition).

I did a

sudo apt-get remove rhythmbox --purge

followed by a

apt-get install rhythmbox

and now it can see my iPhone. However it still isn't working quite yet -
there is another issue which I'm investigating...

[Bug 575278] Re: gedit won't exit and consumes 100% CPU

I just encountered this problem using gedit and the gedit gmate repo. I

I'm also having this issue, Dell Mini 9 with the standard Dell Hardy Heron

Probably so, it just hangs during the implementation of the refresh

[Bug 576176] Re: With MPX, a second pointer entering a gtk menu prevents selecting items on the menu

2010-05-06 Thread Erik B. Andersen
** Description changed:

With two mouse pointers via MPX, if you open a menu with one cursor and
another cursor is in the menu area, neither pointer can select anything
on the menu until it is reopened with only one mouse cursor in the menu
  area.

  To reproduce:
- Using Ubuntu 10.04 and having set up MPX (there's a tutorial at
http://alec.mooo.com/mpx.php) ,
- Move the second mouse cursor to the area the Applications menu opens in.
+ Using Ubuntu 10.04 and having set up MPX (there's a tutorial at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/MPX) ,
+ Move the second mouse cursor to the area the Applications menu opens in.
Open the Applications menu with the first mouse cursor.
Notice that neither cursor can select any menu item.

What I would expect to happen instead:
I would either expect that the menu would allow you to select two different
things, staying open until the last cursor left the menu, or I would expect
what ever cursor moved last would have the highlight under it.

Ok so the issue I'm having now is that under my account, the iPhone
appears in rhythmbox as Apple iPhone, however it only shows me the

everything worked perfectly. Also, the iPhone appeared (correctly) as
Eddie's iPhone.

[Bug 576259] [NEW] gnome-session often doesn't start properly in 10.04

2010-05-06 Thread Corsaire
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

When you log in, on your desktop gnome-session should start and show :
-a toolbar
-icons and applets in this toolbar

But since I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 I have to quit or kill my X

Sometimes I haven't the toolbar, and no menu to exit X, I have to switch

applets are not started and I have to log out and in again to have it
run properly.

Ioannis, I had the same issue (Ubuntu 10.04 i386 here). What I did is
shut down Empathy, then look for telepathy processes. This shows what I
saw:

12370 ?Sl 0:00 /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-haze

21656 pts/4S+ 0:00 grep --color=auto telep
25622 ?S 0:00 /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-salut

I then killed those, and restarted Empathy. This solved my problem. To
answer your question about killing a process by name, use:

[Bug 574693] Re: nautilus ftp file transfer hangs in lucid

I'm still seing this too with the lucid-proposed repository enabled.
Also, trying to manouver the ftp server in the ~/.gvfs directory
produces lots of timeouts (but it does catch up on repeated tries).

[Bug 519583] Re: can't add, move, unlock applets no clock

2010-05-06 Thread side
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuNetbookEdition/ConvertGnomeSession
: This is not a fix ! Thanks to didrocks to give this trick to people
but it won't help me.

Personally I need both of the session for a public area. Netbook Remix
is for free use (Web surfing and some other stuff) and gnome is for
teaching people how to use computer under GNU/Linux.

I have removed all of applet in netbook-remix using gconf-editor and
apt-get removing some indicator-* stuff (and gwibber). I finally only
have the sound applet wich I want, and one annoying thing, there is
still an applet telling me there is no notifications. This one I can't
remove 'cause It will create a bug at login :
OAFIID:GNOME_IndicatorApplet is missing or something like that. That's a
pity because it does not change anything to the system but as the applet
isn't there anymore the system is complaining about that ... Allright so
I let it go ...

For me lid close detection worked in 9.10 for Suspend, but did not work
when I just wanted screen light to be turned off (it stayed on). No
difference whether plugged or unplugged.

Now, after an upgrade (not new install) to 10.04, it stopped working on
my hp mini 2140 entirely.

[Bug 433500] Re: gvfsd memory leak

2010-05-06 Thread barnacle
I have a similar problem with gvfsd, where its memory usage grows in
certain circumstances. I checked some of the other reports here, but
cannot seem to reproduce it with file copies or connections. If I don't
have gnome-system-monitor running, it does not seem to be a problem.

To reproduce on my setup, I just have to start gnome-system-monitor, but
the problem does not appear, until I click the file File Systems tab.
I then disabled all my remote mounts (mostly samba/windows shares) and
switched between the File Systems and Processes tabs. Every time
when on the File System tab the the memory used by gvfsd increased.
When on any of the other tabs, there was no problem.

I then did a few tests by changing some of the settings.

In the preferences I changed the update interval to 20 seconds.
In one minute the memory usage increased from 310 KB to 324KB

I then ticked Show all filesystems
In one minute, the usage increased from 320Kb to 472KB

I then changed the update interval to 1 second and unchecked the Show all
filesystems
In one minute the usage increased from 320KB to 376KB

I then checked the Show all filesystems and;
In one minute the usage increased from 320KB to 1.7MB

As I am no techie (so, I'm not sure I did it correctly) I ran system
monitor with valgrind and attach the log - The problem was that it also
was so unresponsive, that I could not switch between the tabs in the
system monitor)

[Bug 576333] [NEW] Terminal freezes/stalls randomly

2010-05-06 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Every now and then my gnome-terminal session (all Terminal windows)
freezes/stalls for minutes (usually somewhere between 2-5 minutes of
total unresponsiveness). This happens randomly and does not seem to be
related to the action done in Terminal.

The freeze shows up as non-responding Terminal window and compiz starts
rendering the window as black and white.

Opening xterm from ALT+F2 Run Application dialog works fine during the
freeze.

I installed appropriate debug symbols and attached gdb to gnome-terminal
process during a freeze. Here's the result:

i have also this issue in 10.04. additionally if i disable screensaver and
disable shutting down monitor if idle for some time i still get a black screen
after some minutes of idleing.
it seems some more powersaving options are totally ignored.

anyhow, i will try later some of this mentioned tests and workarrounds
to see if how they influence the behaviour.

Yes, sudo telinit 1 still doesn't get you to a single-user command
prompt from the livecd. The messages displayed (without CR preceding
some lines so they are indented) on the (completely nonfunctional)
console are:

Skip stopping firewall: ufw (not enabled)
* PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions
* Disabling power management... [ OK ]
* Stopping rsync daemon rsync[ OK ]
* Speech-dispatcher configured for user sessions
* Stopping Common Unix Printing System: cupsd
* Asking all remaining processes to terminate...
init: upstart-udev-bridge main process ended, respawning
init: udev main process ended, respawning
init: plymouth post-start process (4246) killed by TERM signal
init: Disconnected from system bus
init: rsyslog main process ended, respawning

At this point, we have a dead doornail, i.e. console switching doesn't
work and there is no tracking of the mouse cursor.

ctrl-alt-delete DOES eject the CD, so it must have taken it as a sign
to restart, but there are no additional console messages

I just tried it again after having booted with vga=mode. My
intention was just to see if I would get more messages to the console,
but it made it work!

My guess (as yet unconfirmed) is that it was really waiting for the
response to the menu asking what to do, just not displaying it
correctly. Is there perhaps some locking on console switching causing
a deadlock?

I also think that the priority should be higher, since there are many
times when x wedges in such a way that I need to get into single user
mode. This worked correctly up through jaunty and has prevented me
from upgrading my machines past jaunty.

Indeed, if I blindly type the right number of downarrows (6) to get to
the non-networking root prompt option of the menu, then blindly type
/sbin/shutdown -r now, it reboots.

So it is the display that's the problem, not getting into single user
mode. Perhaps the kernel IS involved?

I wouldn't say that a fix is released, since it's only a workaround
using an unsupported release candidate kernel. I think a real fix would
be to have this fix backported to official lucid (and maybe karmic)
kernels, but until that it's a working *temporary* solution. :)

[Bug 549723] Re: empathy doesn't autoconnect at startup

2010-05-06 Thread Mateusz Łoskot
@Omer I think it's perfectly valid approach. The Startup Applications is
supposed to be a central place to control those, so there is no need to
scatter this functionality in the programs. The latter would be a
Windows-like way, but on Linux, flexibility is the goal.

However, this should be better advertised to users to avoid confusions
as the one that raised this bug report.

[Bug 574334] Re: [users-admin] no option to specify new U/GUID etc.

2010-05-06 Thread ceg
Specifying the UID on creation is not the only advanced option missing.

Generally see it quite troublesome when gnome apps are cutting
functionality away, not uncluttering or easing or explaining advanced
options in the UI but actually delivering regressions. GDM just did the
same, it used to have options to hide users or list only selected users,
not any more. :(

[Bug 574334] Re: [users-admin] no option to specify new U/GUID etc.

2010-05-06 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
If you want to set specific settings for several users regularly, just
edit /etc/gnome-ssytem-tools/user-profiles.conf and change the default
profile to suit your needs. Just give me one use case where showing
settings on user creation would be really better than changing them
later.

The GDM issue is more a lack of manpower than a wanted design, AFAICT.
Should be quite easy to add as a GConf/GSettings key.

[Bug 555657] Re: Print Preview Pages do not show Page Allignment

2010-05-06 Thread ThorX89
The previous print preview was a lot better than that in Lucid Lynx.
What it used to do was that it practically made a new pdf and opened it in
another window that had all the toolbars and accessories of a normal evince
window.
That was really great. Because when I wanted to print two pages on a single
sheet of paper and then print every odd page of this set of double-pages, I
could use the preview feature as an intermediary.
That's now impossible since the new preview allows no further options on
printing.

[Bug 576373] [NEW] battery charge incorrectly reported when A/C power turned off

2010-05-06 Thread Jon Farmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When the A/C power is removed from a fully charged battery the power
manager immediately reports low power (2%) and hibernates. If you power
back up straightaway the power manager reports 100%. Running acpi
between pulling the power and the system hibernating shows battery is at
99% charge. This makes it impossible to pull the power cord from a
