Re: [Bug 539515] Re: Attempts to mount floppy despite no media present - disable automount

2010-06-02 Thread Martin Pitt
Sebastien Bacher [2010-06-01 19:49 -]:
** Attachment added: strace log until getting the udisks log
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/49517978/debug

Ah, this indeed shows some open('/dev/fd0') in the main udisks process
(pid 4632), which cause some 2-second hang.

To confirm that it's really udisks, can you please boot, stay at gdm,
ctrl+alt+f1, log into a text console, do udisks --dump and wait
until it settled, and then go back to gdm with Ctrl+Alt+F7 or
Ctrl+Alt+F8, log in, and verify if it is fast then?

Thanks!

Martin

[Bug 587511] Re: Cannot register jabber account

2010-06-02 Thread ®om
This is a very useful function for users which have not jabber account
yet, they just don't know how to create an account if their client
doesn't support it.

Some other clients have this feature which works fine, so I think this
is possible for empathy too...

[Bug 588577] Re: evince forgets view preferences

2010-06-02 Thread Forest
As mentioned upstream, it seems that evince is now remembering layout
settings on a per-document basis, and applying arbitrary defaults to new
documents. If you were testing by opening the same document several
times, that would explain why you didn't notice the problem.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-06-02 Thread inzpektor
ghook's suggestion works well on Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) except that
/usr/lib/gdm/gdmlogin does not exist. However, I changed that to
/usr/lib/gdm/gdm-xdmcp-chooser-slave (as shown below) and that works
beautifully!

/etc/gdm/custom.conf:
[daemon]
RemoteGreeter=/usr/lib/gdm/gdm-xdmcp-chooser-slave

[xdmcp]
Enable=true

I tested using:
$ sudo X -query xdmcphost :1

[Bug 572617] Re: [regression-release] Compiz fails to decorate windows after upgrade

2010-06-02 Thread Leo
For me, the same. This seems to be not at all a compiz bug, but a gnome-session
one...
So, not only upgrading between two consecutive releases may give a lot of
headache, but also sharing the home directory between consecutive releases.

** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed = Invalid

** Project changed: compiz = gnome-session

** Summary changed:

- [regression-release] Compiz fails to decorate windows after upgrade
+ [regression-release] Session manager lacks backward compatibility, giving
desktop session unusable

** Summary changed:

- [regression-release] Session manager lacks backward compatibility, giving
desktop session unusable
+ [regression-release] Session manager lacks backward compatibility, making the

  2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:09:38 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Following upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04, window decorations are not visible
on boot where compiz was used as the window manager.

- Temporary fix is to invoke System-Preferences-Appearance-Effects and
- select any option that requires compiz. Dialog is displayed Searching
- for available drivers and decorations are restored. System works
- normally until logging out or rebooting, when decorations are lost
- again. System-Preferences-Appearance-Effects is reset to None.
+ From the reports of several users:
+ - The problem never happens with user accounts that are created after
Karmic-Lucid upgrade and only used under a Lucid boot.
+ - The problem (always?) disappear after removing ~/.config/gnome-session

[Bug 588298] Re: non-user-friendly preferences string: Top Posting Option (not Recommended)

2010-06-02 Thread Vish
Apart from being non-Ubuntu-like, for an average user. it is not really
clear why it is Not recommended .

Open source mailing lists might prefer this , but a regular user wouldnt
understand.

It is better to remove the string than to explain why it is not
recommended.

2010-06-02 Thread Leo
Of course. When and if you want.
For information: you can switch user without terminating you session. And
unlike MS-Windows, it really works.

I will mark this report Invalid as it seems that the logs have been
lost and it will be a pain to try and understand exactly what happened
(and probably we won't succeed anyway).

If you can reproduce the same error again, please mark this report as
New for each package, and after that please run apport-collect

[Bug 587228] Re: Adding additional keyboard layouts causes gnome-settings-daemon to use max CPU

2010-06-02 Thread Mark Rowan
I usually have the same problem; after entering 'continue' at gdb's
prompt, I can recreate the bug but then not ctrl+c back out to gdb's
prompt.

I tried it again just now and, although I was unable this time to
recreate the 100% CPU bug for some unknown reason, once I added and
removed a new keyboard layout twice I got an error from g-s-d and
obtained a backtrace (attached).

Like I said, I'm not sure if this particular backtrace applies to the
bug in question, but it did occur after following the same steps which
usually recreate the bug.

This happens to me too, but not only on startup. From time to time,
theme gets broken (gnome-settings-daemon dies) when I close an
application (not certain app, but seems to be random). I also have
modified gdm with 'gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-
properties', if that matters. Also, restarting gnome-settings-daemon
isn't enough, but nautilus must be restarted too for the theme to be
fully recovered.

[Bug 363245] Re: gtk_main leaks a file descriptor every time the main loop is run if threads have been initialized

2010-06-02 Thread Jean-Paul Calderone
Two things seem to be getting confused here.

1) The Lucid version performs better than any of the previously packaged
versions. So, I'd like the fixes which are present in the Lucid package
to be backported to Karmic and Hardy.

2) Separately, the Lucid version still leaks file descriptors, probably
because of some reference cycle which gobject can't deal with.

Sorry for not being more clear earlier.

Can the fixes which are in the Lucid package be backported to Karmic and
Hardy?

[Bug 433500] Re: gvfsd memory leak

2010-06-02 Thread feci
I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 64bit and I have the same problem that most of you have
already described.
My workstation has 4 Gb of ram and I usually have the swap partitions disabled,
I only activate them if I really need to. I also have my workstation on 24/7
and a lot of services (like mysqld, sshd, apache, virtualbox, ...) running on
it 24/7. I can't figure out the exact pattern which causes the memory leak in
gvfsd, but I don't use network shares, neither NFS nor samba. I do use the
shared folders feature of virtualbox, but I'm not convinced that the shared
folders are really samba or nfs shares. So as far as I see the issue it isn't
just related to sharing.
In my case the issue must have to do something with usb memory sticks, which
are of course automatically mounted by gvfsd once inserted, but even if they
are removed after being first unmounted, gvfsd will start eating up all the
memory it can get.
If there is anything that I could do to provide useful information please tell
me how to do so.

[Bug 467668] Re: [regression-release] Neither compiz nor metacity nor nautilus are run at start

2010-06-02 Thread Augustin
I have renamed the following folders:
- ~/.compiz
- ~/.config/compiz
- ~/.config/gnome-session

A reboot later, nothing's fixed.

I may try to rename even more folders, or do the opposite, i.e. rename
every folder but a few that I'm 100% sure have nothing to do with
graphical stuff (thunderbird, chromium, etc.).

It's so frustrating not to be able to launch some kind of program to
return to a default config and work up from there.

2010-06-02 Thread Renzo Bagnati
For me the package in proposed (brasero_2.30.1-0ubuntu2) does not work.
I cannot make images of cd-audio and cannot copy cd-audio on the fly. I always
get an error saying that all the necessary applications and libraries are not
installed.
I can do both operations with the packages in my ppa (see comments #56, #60 and
#63).

[Bug 206547] Re: Open (but do not raise) new conversation windows automatically

2010-06-02 Thread Daniel Wu
With all due respect, I missed a lot of chats or responds them too late because
of this desired behavior. It is ok for developers not to change the design.
I will just switch the IM client.
I wonder if there is a place to vote not to have Empathy as default IM client
in up coming Ubuntu releases. Or perhaps a someone could point me a link to
cleanly remove it from Ubuntu 10.04.

[Bug 588550] Re: gvsfd-metadata segfault in live 10.04

2010-06-02 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 549935] Re: gnome-screenshot ignores --area if called from shortcut

2010-06-02 Thread Kamus
I tried to do reproduce this issue here running Ubuntu Lucid but works
fine for me (under similar conditions). This is that I did such as a
possible work around:

1) Create a new shorcut with name Capture Area and command
/usr/bin/gnome-screenshot --area
2) Then assign a shortcut to execute this function (I assigned Control + Impr
just for testing porpuses)
3) Press Control + Impr and voila.

Regards

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-06-02 Thread Christopher
For what it's worth, I run two partitions on my laptop; one stable and
the other the latest alphas. The applets in the stable version of Lucid
is normal while I'm experiencing the same issue on the one that began as
Alpha 1.

I also have a desktop similarly set up with the same results.

[Bug 575877] Re: gnome-keyring mysteriously asks for keyring password on startup

2010-06-02 Thread Mr. X
This bug shouldn't be marked as low importance. This is an usability
issue that impacts the very first impression of ubuntu.

As an example, I installed Ubuntu in a netbook for my parents.

Because they value simplicity, I made the netbook login automatically,
opening the web browser and skype immediately.

It worked perfectly until I upgraded to Lucid. It now asks for a
password to access the wireless network.

Advanced users may think this is low priority; but for the regular users
this is an usability killer.

Please give us a workaround -- or mark this as higher priority.

Remember: this is the very first impression of ubuntu.
