[Bug 593258] [NEW] calendar applet and user switch / logout applet are frequently cutoff and unusable
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel On my desktop, the calendar applet and/or the user switch/logout applet very often display only half of their widget area. For the calendar applet, this means that the time information is missing. For the user switch applet, this means that there is no logout button. In previous versions of Ubuntu, I also had problems with the panel: Frequently (but not always) the top and bottom panel were reverted after logging in. I had to call gnome-panel --replace in a console to reload the panel. This always fixed the issue. In Karmic there seems to be a patch for the reverted panels, because sometimes when logging in I can observe that the top and bottom panels are exchanged, but after a few seconds they automatically rearrange themselves to be on the right place again. gnome-panel --replace also fixes the cutoff applets. However, this is a new and very annoying bug, which is one of the sort which prevents non-power-users from using Ubuntu. How should I tell my friends Ubuntu is great, but occasionally you will not have an opportunity to logout anymore??? See the screenshot attached. [Bug 580735] Re: Clock Applet crashes for no reason
I have another crash currently and the clock shows another part of the gnome panel instead of the time. Specifically it shows the date Sun Jun 13, but truncated because the clock is smaller so it only shows Jun 13, and a couple of dots on each side. (see attachment) I installed debug symbols and tried to do a backtrace, but as i understand it, i have to start gnome-panel with gdb. Since the crash occurs randomly and usually when i am logging in to the system, i don't understand how i am supposed to do that. Also, because the crash occurs randomly i can't Perform any actions necessary to reproduce the crash. Do i have to always start gnome-panel with gdb on start-up and keep logging off and on until the crash happens? Another thing i noticed: The above behaviour occurs only on my box which was upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. This bug occurs to me in Empathy version 2.30.1-0ubuntu1 on Lucid, I am guessing the fix is in proposed? I can send large messages, but when I receive one on MSN it will only show up in the notify-osd. It does not show up in the chat window and trying to access the chat history crashes. Also, I noticed sometimes a friends message will show up under the box that contains my messages. Hi, Thank you for the contact. Sorry I might make you confused. The title of the report was actually wrong. The moved file remains by looking at, but the cutpaste was successful in fact. The following steps shows how to reproduct. - Create ~/tmp1 and ~/tmp2 - Open those directories with nautilus. - Create files named foo, bar and baz, respectively in tmp1. - Search files with keyword ba and cutpaste it to tmp2. - Then, you will see both bar and baz remaining in the tab in which you firstly opend tmp1. I cannot see if this is a bug or a proper spec. I encountered this when I was laying out my photos. Since I assumed that the tab used for search would behave in the same way two tabs without search operation does, I misunderstood that the file was still there. You have been subscribed to a public bug: After a few updates, gnome panels now have a 25 second delay after the session is loaded entirely. The desktop shows up, the icons in the desktop show up, but the panels are invisible for 25 seconds... They seem invisible because then you kill gnome-panel from terminal, the desktop icon positions move and then they are back again some milimeters where they were, implying that at least the panel space is being loaded. Killer bug! No apparent stuff on .xessions-errors, default applets. Deleted .gconf .gnome2 .gconfd and problem did not go away. I thought it was pretty clear, but I'll list them out here for completeness, numbered according to their numbers in the original posting: 1. Make the sound volume adjustable, like in Pidgin. 2. Play the sound even when the conversation window is focused. 3. Make the Messaging Menu icon in the notification area compliant with the Gnome HIG. I'm not a human factors guy, so I don't pretend to have the One True Answer. Some ideas though: a. Mailbox with flag (like xbiff). b. Throbbing envelope when there's a new message (but not flashing or too annoying). 4. N/A 5. When there is an unread message in the conversation window, bold and color the tab on which the message exists. Maybe as an easy stop-gap, reverse the icons used for no new messages and new message (eg: the white and green ones). 6. Change the default theme to show URGENT windows in the pager as inverse color (Gray on White, maybe) instead of white on lighter-gray-than-normal. So there are 6 ideas. Note that they are just ideas. The fact that those exact ideas themselves aren't implemented should not turn into the main focus of this bug. Some might say that I should split this report up six ways. I submit that if I had, each one would have gotten dismissed as not really a problem, but a subjective feature enhancement request. Once it has been determined what to do to rectify the problem as a whole, I would suggest _at_that_point_, for someone (even me) to split this bug up into individual tasks. I reiterate that the problem is not any one of these things, but their sum. The problem here is that the current methods of getting the attention of the user are inadequate, and that it's very easy for the user to miss new messages that come in. I also reiterate that the people in charge of Empathy's user interface should take a good hard look at the things which Pidgin does to get the user's attention. I'm not blowing the horn for Pidgin here, I'm just saying that they seem to have the human factors area worked out pretty well.
