[Bug 595402] Re: nautilus selects wrong file in open file dialog withing firefox
i created a test user and checked if i can reproduce the issue from this account but there it works all fine. then i switched back to my regular user and now it seems be fixed there too. so i deleted the test user and his home directory again and will see what happens... the only graphical changes i made to my system was to change the colors with the gnome color chooser - maybe this explains it!? if it happens again did i'm able to replace the package with a fresh one to overwrite any buggy things? which package would contain gtkfilechooser? thanks anyway for your support! Re: [Bug 58205] Re: Should provide Right-Click-Format...
On Fri, 2010-06-18 at 07:14 +, David Clayton wrote: There is a major security flaw with this new functionality, why should non-admin users be permitted to format storage? A normally privileged desktop user should be able to format media. Are you saying that there is no way to disable this functionality, or no way to say that users must be in a certain group to do so? I know that at least in my case, my standard user has membership in the admin group, and therefore ought to be able to format media. Now, I just created an unprivileged desktop user and attempted to format both an internal HDD and a USB mass storage device, and in both events I was requested to authenticate as my privileged system user so that my request would be carried out. I think that might even be overkill; block devices that are already available when the user logs in are obviously to be protected. However, if I sit down at someone else's computer, and I put in a new USB drive that I just purchased, I *certainly* should be able to format it. That is, unless I am also not allowed to use external media on the system, but then it's a moot point, isn't it? Formatting using existing tools such as gparted require a sudo password, but now Linux bypasses this obvious security requirement for some nebulous user convenience, what is this OS becoming, Windows? No, it's using PolicyKit to determine whether or not the user is privileged according to system policy. If you don't like the system policy, change it! Fine that users with Administration rights have this sort of functionality, but non-admin users should not have this capability either through Nautilus or the Disk Utility. I'm putting in a security bug now over this. Where is the security bug? Authorization to perform the task must still be granted to the user, and you can easily create accounts that lack the privileges required to format both internal and external media. It sounds to me like you are filing a security bug without even attempting to understand the system and how it works, or having tested out the idea of using a nonprivileged user account to see if you can still format things. My word, where did critical thinking and evaluation skills go? Have they disappeared altogether or something? I am really sick of seeing uninformed posts claiming faults in a system that isn't even understood by the people screaming that a fault exists. What a shame. -- Should provide Right-Click-Format... https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/58205 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 595825] Re: Non-admin users can format removable media
Creating a non privileged desktop user on my system currently running an up-to-date Maverick installation does not yield this problem; the system instead prompts for the password for the privileged user and will then, if the proper credentials are input, will format the media. I do not have Lucid installed to determine if this is the same way there at the moment, but if memory serves, it absolutely is. Remove the user's ability to automatically mount external media, and you will remove the ability for them to format it as well. Furthermore, this bug report lists no actual cause to be classified as a security vulnerability. No vulnerability here is documented, nor is any documentation of actual compromise provided. The bug report itself is also argumentative. To the bug reporter: If you can show a security vulnerability and document a method of compromise that can affect a running system's configuration, please feel free to open a bug with the appropriate documentation. However, it seems to me that you're complaining that a normally-privileged desktop user on a standard Ubuntu installation is able to insert a USB mass storage device and then format it. That is normal and to-be-expected behavior, as it is a necessarily often task for many types of users. If the issue is that you need finer-grained control over who can format what and when, I suggest that you check to see if PolicyKit already has a means of setting policy for this, and if not, filing a bug there to have a policy setting added. After that's done, I am sure that upstream Nautilus will be happy to take a bug report to support that PolicyKit setting. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- Non-admin users can format removable media https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/595825 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 591561] Re: Gnome panel got one line bottom when login as Thai language.
As a background note that may or may not be related: Thai also has subscript vowels that happen not to occur in the Applications / Places / System menu names. There has been some controversy over whether the vertical space for those should be counted as part of a font's size or not, and that could conceivably be confusing things. For example if you write ดูนี้ (4 layers of characters!) one font may say its size includes the height of ดู and another may count only the ด part. I forget whether or how the upper two characters in นี้ are counted, but the base line of text (the equivalent of the height of x in English typography) is only as high as the ดน part. -- Gnome panel got one line bottom when login as Thai language. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/591561 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I created a new user with the standard Desktop User privileges, checked that it did not have System Admin rights and then logged in as that user. I put in a USB drive and I can right-click format that drive *without* any further restriction or Authorisation request, so yes I do think that is a security problem. If formatting media is suddenly allowed BY DEFAULT for normal Desktop Users (I do not believe that it was available before this Ubuntu release like this, all formatting functions required sudo access) without requiring Authorisation then I'd like to know where the line of Admin versus Desktop Users privileges actually is now? -- Should provide Right-Click-Format... https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/58205 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 595825] Re: Non-admin users can format removable media
Ok, my concept of security encompasses *all* the data that the user has access to, whether connected via internal storage or external storage so that is why I considered this a Security Vulnerability, obviously that is not the commonly accepted definition in this domain. I sort of find it amusing that an External storage device may well have various file system permission settings to prevent users from writing/deleting data, but apparently it is accepted that they can still format the entire device anyway... Anyway, I created a new user with standard Desktop User privileges, logged in as that user, inserted a USB drive and was able to format that drive without any request for further authorisation. I do not believe any formatting tools were available in previous Ubuntu releases that did not require sudo authorisation to run, so that is why I consider this new functionality to be a security issue. [Bug 372132] Re: Create Document Templates difficult to use
I feel compelled to give my 2cents: As an experienced computer user it took me 3 years to figure out the meaning of the 'Template' folder in my home directory (since I don't read manuals/documentation as nobody does - except the developers when writing them) - see comment #53. Ok, I did not really investigated what it is for (you know, searching through the web and suddenly 2 hours went by) but I always wondered: 'What the heck is this folder and why is it there? Can I safely remove it? Or does it come back then? Or even worse, are things broken then? The obvious way of putting a file named with the Template name into this directory seemed ways to easy for me. My fault though I think a common one. Therefore I think providing the most common file types as templates (Writer, Calc...) is really important. If I then browse through my home directory and open the Template folder I see some files and maybe can figure out for what they are. By now, I've added templates for scripting and much more and like it. Especially that I can define a template file with execution bit set (and shebang of course). The current situation: an empty directory in my home dir and and empty submenu is not satisfactoring or user-friendly. -- Create Document Templates difficult to use https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/372132 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't
unclutter makes me feel better, since it remedies the main problem of visual obfuscation. As little as the problem may be, it is gone, not perfectly, not consistently, not even natively patched, but as a user i already can say thanks. i'd suggest to put some effort into WM-based solutions. No, this is not a feature request, no, toolkits, X or the respective single applications can not solve the problem by themselves, since its scale exceeds their respective areas. -- Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/16492 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
