[Bug 542343] Re: gnome-panel will not autostart on lucid

2010-07-28 Thread Alvils Berzins
Hmm, I must admit this seems like some kind of a race condition to me. As Lucid
in general starts up processes in parallel, then in a case where the system
performance is not adequate, things might go south.
To test this, I have assembled two machines of notably low performance.
The first one is running on a Celeron 667 (sic) MHz CPU. Initially I put 256
megs of RAM into it. It has a 20 GiB hard drive. Swapping as hell, it worked,
apart from the fact that its i740 video card didn't support resolutions higher
than 800x600 and so I was forced to generate an xorg.conf file and use the vesa
driver. But that's another issue. Adding an additional 256 MiB helped to remedy
the swapping issue, and, although pretty slow, it still worked.
The second one is the precise Intel Desktop Board with the i815 chipset
mentioned in post #38. It has a Celeron 600 MHz CPU and 384 MiB of RAM
installed. It uses the embedded video. Oh my - the first logon works as it
should, as perhaps the configuration files are generated/cached, but the second
one has no panel. Actually the panel launches, and pressing Ctrl+Alt+T to open
the terminal and issuing `sudo killall gnome-panel` brings it back up. I tried
to edit the /usr/share/applications/gnome-panel.desktop file and uncomment the
X-gnome-autostart-phase=Panel line. After doing that, deleting ~/.g*
directories and rebooting the panel came up again. And so after several
restarts. But then I realized another issue - Nautilus does things the same
way, so, although the panel is up, the desktop icons ain't. :(
Needless to say that after installing the updates the .desktop files were
changed back to original, so just editing them is not enough, as any updates
could put things back to normal.
I suspect the problem is Celeron 600's performance. I have a Celeron 766 MHz
somewhere at home, so if I find it, I'll try to install that CPU on the faulty
PC and see whether startup works normally then. It could be that the critical
line for using a Celeron CPU is somewhere between 600 and 667 MHz. At least in
the configuration I used.
Anyway, regardless of whether my tests will be successful, the very main issue
that creates such behaviour is the one Lucid developers are proud of - parallel
starting of processes. While giving an advantage on modern multi-core CPUs,
this may not work on slower machines. I would be very glad in this regard if
there was an option available during the installation (and maybe also
afterwards) that would allow me to choose whether I want to start processes in
parallel or in a sequential manner, so owners of older and slower machines
(anyway, Celeron 600 is still enough for my Grandma to read e-mails) could also
run Lucid. At the very least, update manager should not try to be smarter than
me and change the .desktop files back to original. If I have edited them, I
think I know what I'm doing and WHY I am doing that... :(

So, the bottom line of this is: I strongly suspect that this bug is
created by the parallel starting of processes. If a machine, for
whatever reason, does not have enough horsepower, a race condition could
appear. The obvious solution would be to allow the user to choose a
compatibility mode where those Gnome things would be started up in a
sequential manner.

I will inform you later (after about 10 hours) whether upgrading the CPU
to 766 MHz has solved the issue.

[Bug 542343] Re: gnome-panel will not autostart on lucid

2010-07-28 Thread Virgil Brummond
Alvils Berzins, perhaps try setting the swappiness parameter to
vm.swappiness=100 on machines with low ram. I find this makes things
much smoother.

To do so:

1. Open this text file as root: /etc/sysctl.conf
2. Append this to the end: vm.swappiness=100
3. Reboot.

Hi Virgil,

Thanks for the tip. :) Actually, this is a good idea.
Yet, this is not the case. As I wrote, a Celeron 667 with 256 MiB of RAM swaps,

[Bug 359658] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in strcmp()

2010-07-28 Thread Oded Arbel
I'm sorry, but I didn't encounter this problem again on my system.

My personal opinion as a developer is that changing bad code for good
code is a good idea, and even if the original problem is not
reproduceable and even if the patch is not being tested, that fix still
makes sense and should go in - preventing SIGSEGV should be no. 1
priority of developers.

Here's the GNOME official documentation of g_str_equal() (the call being
replaced by the patch):
---8---
Note that this function is primarily meant as a hash table comparison function.
For a general-purpose, NULL-safe string comparison function, see g_strcmp0().
---8---

Which as I read it means: don't ever use g_str_equal() as a general
string comparison method. IMHO no testing feedback should be required to
apply this patch, because it makes sense the original code is bad.

[Bug 572985] Re: backup settings option uses unhelpful yes/no dialog

2010-07-28 Thread Andrew
I have sent a patch upstream which does the following:-

I have changed the backup dialog text from this:
---
Evolution backup can start only when Evolution is not running. Please make sure
that you save and close all your unsaved windows before proceeding. If you
want Evolution to restart automatically after backup, please enable the toggle
button.
---

To this:
---
To backup your data and settings, you must first close Evolution. Please make
sure that you save any unsaved data before proceeding.
---

I removed the unnecessary explanation about the togglebutton, it is not needed,
it can explain itself. I also removed the bit about closing unsaved windows,
this isn't what we want to tell the user, we want the user to saved any unsaved
data, not just delete it. I also rephrased the first bit to make it orientated
to what the user is doing, not speaking about the technical side of how it will
work.

I also changed the button text from:
--
No | Yes
--

To:
--
Cancel | Close and Backup Evolution
--

Now there is no confusion over what will happen.

I have changed the restore dialog text from this:
---
This will delete all your current Evolution data and settings and restore them
from your backup. Evolution restore can start only when Evolution is not
running. Please make sure that you close all your unsaved windows before you
proceed. If you want Evolution to restart automatically restart after restore,
please enable the toggle button.
---

To this:
---
To restore your data and settings, you must first close Evolution. Please make
sure that you save any unsaved data before proceeding. This will delete all
your current Evolution data and settings and restore them from your backup.
---

this is the same text as in the backup dialog, but with the added sentence of
warning the user of what will happen. Likewise the button text has been changed
from:
--
No | Yes
--

To:
--
Cancel | Close and Restore Evolution
--

I'm having these same problems on Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Sometimes when

Sometimes the power button disappears and I have to go into a terminal

Until we wait for a bugfix from the updater, is there a way of going

Can I suggest that the display labels are hidden when the Monitors

[Bug 610802] Re: 'Mirror Screens' often seen on projectors during presentations.

2010-07-28 Thread Ivanka Majic
As someone who gives presentations very regularly, I can confirm this is
a major annoyance and somewhat impedes the 'smoothness' of the start of
the presentation.

+1 on Michael's suggestion.

will preload the movie just like the typical youtube flashplayer. It

2010-07-28 Thread teknopartz
In case anyone is interested:

After I replaced 'swell-foop' with 'same-gnome' things look good with
the game until it comes to saving high-scores! In order to make scores
work I had to do something like this:

touch /var/games/same-gnome.Small.scores
touch /var/games/same-gnome.Medium.scores
touch /var/games/same-gnome.Large.scores
chmod 664 /var/games/same-gnome.*
chown root:games /var/games/same-gnome.*

I think my mum will be happy about the game working properly now (hopefully!)

Hi,

I am using Ubuntu Lucid, and I would like to report that the System --
Preferences -- Startup Applications program is buggy when trying to
activate and then DE-activate the Automatically remember running
applications when logging out option.

I activated the option, logged out, logged in and yes, the running

But when I deselect the Automatically... function and logged out then
logged in, the system was STILL trying to reload the previous set of
running applications.

Hope somebody can enlighten me on this problem. Thank you so much!

[Bug 610847] [NEW] gnome-screenshot allows multiple instances

2010-07-28 Thread John Baptist
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Multiple instances of gnome-screenshot can be active at a time. This is
problematic if the user accidentally holds down the PrintScr key for a
moment, as the resulting numerous instances of the program seriously
degrade system performance and are annoying to terminate.

Instead, if PrintScr is pressed when gnome-screenshot is already active,
either (a) that instance should be moved to the foreground or (b)
nothing should happen.

[Bug 608833] Re: Gnome Panel hangs and renders touchpad and mouse unusable

2010-07-28 Thread JimP
@jpangamarca, The first attempt to get a backtrace did not work well.
Gnome-panel has a very long list of dependencies though, and I only
installed the debug symbols for gnome-panel itself. The effect that I
got was that when the problem occurred the gnome debugger seemed to make
the problem worse as none of my previously documented tricks for
regaining control of the X session would work. I had to use the run
application dialog to run killall gnome-panel. There was nothing in the
backtrace after the initial startup messages (one for each dependency!)
and it noting when I terminated it. The problem occurred when I was
using an xpra session to an instance of thunderbird running under
another user account on the same machine. There were some xsession
messages, which are attached.

[Bug 609843] Re: memory leaks

2010-07-28 Thread haqt

I can confirm and replicate the bug.

ran 2 tests:

for 1st test:

- No issues running search utility. Only a few files were returned in
search results

top output after search completed:

No issues copying files to a temp folder.

for 2nd test:

- Again, no issues running search utility. This time more than 6000
files were returned in search results.

- When I selected all the files and dragged (copied) them to a folder, cpu load
spiked momentarily (due to disk activity). During this period, mouse becomes
slightly unresponsive too. But eventually the disk activity subsides.
In top I could see that the search tool has consumed a large portion of
available memory, but nothing has copied to folder. No copy indicator with
completion bar appear to indicate that a copy is in progress.

here is top output while I was waiting for files to copy across.

top - 23:50:42 up 3:23, 2 users, load average: 0.85, 0.50, 0.35

- The files that were copied could not have been more than 1gb in total. So
there really should have been no issues copying the files to a folder

While I was waiting for the copy indicator to appear, i can use the
search tool to run another search. I was able to run a few more search
queries before an error message appear saying there was insufficient
memory left to run search query.

Eventually, I ran out of patience after 15min or so, and closed the
search tool.

The search tool closed normally, and all the memory it previously
consumed was freed.

[Bug 609843] Re: memory leaks

2010-07-28 Thread haqt
ERE,

I don't think this is a memory leak.

Although gnome-search-tool does consume an unusually large amount of
memory while the program is running, they seem to be freed once the
program is terminated.

I think a more appropriate title to this bug would be: 'gnome-search-
tool consumes alot of memory while attempting to copy files from search
results; cannot copy files from large search results'

or something like that

[Bug 610908] [NEW] Enter a Password to unlock the volume window got no title

When inserting a encrypted Luks-Volume gvfs pops up a new window asking

[Bug 575500] Re: refuses to open files with incorrect encoding

2010-07-28 Thread arkmundi
My solution to the problem:
iconv -f 'UTF-8' -t 'ASCII//IGNORE' -o output-file-name --verbose
input-file-name

The -t 'ASCII//IGNORE' option insures that the offensive characters will
be discarded from the output, and the --verbose option tells you where
they were in the file.

[Bug 610930] [NEW] Nautilus crashes when trying to form preview of malformed SVG image.

2010-07-28 Thread Lorem Daijoh
Public bug reported:

Symptoms:

Nautilus crashes when trying to form preview of malformed SVG image e.g.
when opening the containing folder. If the image is placed on the
Desktop, Nautilus will go into crash-restart loop.

Culprit:

Malformed SVG file that has style attribute containing zero length
property value. Few examples below:

First perfectly OK svg file.

- example.svg - WORKING 8 (file cutline)
svg
circle style=fill:red cx=100 cy=100 r=100/
/svg
8

Removed the red to make zero length fill-value. Will crash nautilus.

- example.svg - NONWORKING -8
svg
circle style=fill: cx=100 cy=100 r=100/
/svg
8

Added whitespace to make fill-value non zero length. This works again,
although the circle will be completely black.

- example.svg - WORKING 8
svg
circle style=fill: cx=100 cy=100 r=100/
/svg
8

Added standard delimiter right after the :. Fill-value is again zero-
length and causes Nautilus to crash.

- example.svg - NONWORKING -8
svg
circle style=fill:; cx=100 cy=100 r=100/
/svg
8

So it is pretty clear that style attribute containing zero length
property value will cause troubles. Hopefully this will help to find and
fix the bug.

[Bug 575410] Re: clock-applet freezes when clicking on time

2010-07-28 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Hi there. I prevented You to receive some other messages from me: from July 13
till now I experienced days when the but appeared and days when the bug
vanished.

Today I tried a workaround read from bug #439448 - comment #205 - I
added a 3 seconds delay at gnome-panel startup. Then I tried to reboot
my sytem MANY TIMES and now I can say that the clock applet works
correctly at startup.

This is not a bug fix but a simply workaround. I cannot argue why the
3 seconds delay at gnome panel startup let it works.

[Bug 610937] [NEW] YouTUBE support broken

2010-07-28 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Public bug reported:

(Note: I really don't know why Totem insisted on filing this bug against
gstreamer, but anyhow...)

Since a few days, support to playback YouTube videos in Totem is broken
again. The thumbnails appear as normal in the sidebar, but clicking on
any of them returns a you might not have sufficient permissions to
access this content warning.

Trying to run Totem from command line on a terminal, we notice the
following debug message:

** Message: Error:

Should I assume that Totem simply hasn't kept up with YouTube's ever-

[Bug 610940] [NEW] When power is unplugged the system hibernates

2010-07-28 Thread chanux
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

This bug looks a lot like bug #472717 but I report since I see
differences.

Note: Apparently my batteryy is broken so that ubuntu reports laptop
battery capacity is low (42.3%) at the startup.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 (freshly Installed recently preserving /home)

Once I unplug the power it prompts to hibernate saying battery capacity is 0.
But when checked on pallette icon it reports 40 mins remaining time.

If I OK the hibernate dialog, machine hibernates. If I Cancel it machine
locks down.

And sometimes it hibernates right after waking up from hibernate. (I say
sometimes because I only have memories of happening this once or twice
and couldn't test and confirm).

I installed xfce4-power-manager and started using it and now I don't
have any problem.

[Bug 455421] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in g_object_set()

2010-07-28 Thread Phil Ayres
I see a similar issue in Lucid, up to date as of yesterday's updates.

In syslog I see this at the time of the crash. I included the pulseaudio
ratelimit message just before, in case it is relevant.

Jul 28 12:28:51 consected-sv1-001 pulseaudio[1670]: ratelimit.c: 130 events
suppressed
Jul 28 12:29:17 consected-sv1-001 kernel: [15882.976141] __ratelimit: 6

Jul 28 12:29:17 consected-sv1-001 kernel: [15882.976155] rhythmbox[30966]:
segfault at 0 ip (null) sp b233e16c error 4 in
libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0.2000.1[11+93000]

One thing I observed is this seems to happen more often if I change the
volume soon after opening Rhythmbox and just after starting to play a
track. Perhaps it doesn't like a change in volume at the same time a lot
of other things are going on, such as trying to get a bunch of data
streamed.

[Bug 401823] Re: Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble ahead

2010-07-28 Thread tekstr1der
As stated above by Zack Evans and confirmed by many previous me-too's,
this bug is still present in GTK on an up-to-date lucid install. This
occurs with the latest chromium stable build for me. It is not fixed.
Changing status to correctly reflect... status.

[Bug 610982] [NEW] Problems when running gconf-based applications on a remote desktop

2010-07-28 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gconf

I am SSHing (ssh -X ...) to a Maverick machine from a Lucid machine.
In the terminal I start X applications (thunderbird, OpenOffice.org)
which are running on the Maverick machine and whose windows are
displaying on the desktop of the Lucid machine.

There I have several problems with GConf.

When I start Thunderbird, I get a pop-up window telling An error
occured while loading or saving configuration information for
thunderbird-bin.. Clicking on Details saysFailed to contact
configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or
misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See
http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information.(Details - 1: Failed
to get connection to session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-
pQzGHgatiO: Connection refused). This message repeats several times
with different names of the temporary file. Thunderbird takes very long
to start and the window is grayed for a longer time. Also during the
Thunderbird session the window grays very often and freezes, especially
it grays half a minute on the download of every single newsgroup
message. All this does not happen when starting Thunderbird locally on
the desktop of the Maverick box.

When starting ooffice in the SSH terminal, it shows the splash screen
and then gives the message Failed to contact configuration server; the
most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus
daemon. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information.(Details -
1: Failed to get connection to session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp
/dbus-pQzGHgatiO: Connection refused) (same message as in Thunderbird)
repeatedly in an infinite loop and the main window never appears.
OpenOffice.org works correctly when started on the local desktop.

[Bug 375591] [NEW] f-spot nautilus reality inconsistency when rotating images

2010-07-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When rotating an image in f-spot, f-spot does not really rotate that image,
only shows you rotated, furthermore nautilus now shows you that rotated image
in its rotated state too, while in reality the image is NOT rotated.
When i then upload the image to imageshack, a blog, a webspace, usb stick or
whatever, the image is in its original unmodified way.
This inconsistency is unwanted, when i want to rotate an image, i really want
it rotated not just shown to me in a rotated way, also leads to complications
and unwanted results.
Please include a way to really rotate it and if not, at least make nautilus
show the image *correctly*

[Bug 598514] Re: F-spot no longer works

2010-07-28 Thread John Vivirito
With new install of 10.04 and an upgrade to 10.10 F-spot crashes as it
was before when trying to import pictures. I will run apport-collect to
gather new info.

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

A few days ago my screen-savers worked great, now i find that F-spot
screen saver no longer works, they are in my favorites so it should
work. I don't know if this applies but i opened f-spot to check on tags
but i will post it here anyway. It seems that a lot if not all work as
expected. i haven't tried the Webcollage screen saver, that has been
another one that has given me issues.

[Bug 610982] Re: Problems when running gconf-based applications on a remote desktop

2010-07-28 Thread Till Kamppeter
Some additional notes:

1. My Inbox contains around 10 mails. To avoid getting hit by bug
518336 I have turned off the global search.

2. Last week thunderbird-bin consumed 100% CPU, but after a kernel
update to fix bug 609113 thunderbird did not consume 100% CPU any more
while it is frozen/grayed.

3. During the freeze (grayed) phases Thunderbird probably tries to
access GConf and times out, but I am not sure what really happens.
