[Bug 542343] Re: gnome-panel will not autostart on lucid
Hmm, I must admit this seems like some kind of a race condition to me. As Lucid in general starts up processes in parallel, then in a case where the system performance is not adequate, things might go south. To test this, I have assembled two machines of notably low performance. The first one is running on a Celeron 667 (sic) MHz CPU. Initially I put 256 megs of RAM into it. It has a 20 GiB hard drive. Swapping as hell, it worked, apart from the fact that its i740 video card didn't support resolutions higher than 800x600 and so I was forced to generate an xorg.conf file and use the vesa driver. But that's another issue. Adding an additional 256 MiB helped to remedy the swapping issue, and, although pretty slow, it still worked. The second one is the precise Intel Desktop Board with the i815 chipset mentioned in post #38. It has a Celeron 600 MHz CPU and 384 MiB of RAM installed. It uses the embedded video. Oh my - the first logon works as it should, as perhaps the configuration files are generated/cached, but the second one has no panel. Actually the panel launches, and pressing Ctrl+Alt+T to open the terminal and issuing `sudo killall gnome-panel` brings it back up. I tried to edit the /usr/share/applications/gnome-panel.desktop file and uncomment the X-gnome-autostart-phase=Panel line. After doing that, deleting ~/.g* directories and rebooting the panel came up again. And so after several restarts. But then I realized another issue - Nautilus does things the same way, so, although the panel is up, the desktop icons ain't. :( Needless to say that after installing the updates the .desktop files were changed back to original, so just editing them is not enough, as any updates could put things back to normal. I suspect the problem is Celeron 600's performance. I have a Celeron 766 MHz somewhere at home, so if I find it, I'll try to install that CPU on the faulty PC and see whether startup works normally then. It could be that the critical line for using a Celeron CPU is somewhere between 600 and 667 MHz. At least in the configuration I used. Anyway, regardless of whether my tests will be successful, the very main issue that creates such behaviour is the one Lucid developers are proud of - parallel starting of processes. While giving an advantage on modern multi-core CPUs, this may not work on slower machines. I would be very glad in this regard if there was an option available during the installation (and maybe also afterwards) that would allow me to choose whether I want to start processes in parallel or in a sequential manner, so owners of older and slower machines (anyway, Celeron 600 is still enough for my Grandma to read e-mails) could also run Lucid. At the very least, update manager should not try to be smarter than me and change the .desktop files back to original. If I have edited them, I think I know what I'm doing and WHY I am doing that... :( So, the bottom line of this is: I strongly suspect that this bug is created by the parallel starting of processes. If a machine, for whatever reason, does not have enough horsepower, a race condition could appear. The obvious solution would be to allow the user to choose a compatibility mode where those Gnome things would be started up in a sequential manner. I will inform you later (after about 10 hours) whether upgrading the CPU to 766 MHz has solved the issue. -- gnome-panel will not autostart on lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/542343 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 359658] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in strcmp()
I'm sorry, but I didn't encounter this problem again on my system. My personal opinion as a developer is that changing bad code for good code is a good idea, and even if the original problem is not reproduceable and even if the patch is not being tested, that fix still makes sense and should go in - preventing SIGSEGV should be no. 1 priority of developers. Here's the GNOME official documentation of g_str_equal() (the call being replaced by the patch): ---8--- Note that this function is primarily meant as a hash table comparison function. For a general-purpose, NULL-safe string comparison function, see g_strcmp0(). ---8--- Which as I read it means: don't ever use g_str_equal() as a general string comparison method. IMHO no testing feedback should be required to apply this patch, because it makes sense the original code is bad. -- evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in strcmp() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/359658 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a subscriber of a duplicate bug. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 608833] Re: Gnome Panel hangs and renders touchpad and mouse unusable
@jpangamarca, The first attempt to get a backtrace did not work well. Gnome-panel has a very long list of dependencies though, and I only installed the debug symbols for gnome-panel itself. The effect that I got was that when the problem occurred the gnome debugger seemed to make the problem worse as none of my previously documented tricks for regaining control of the X session would work. I had to use the run application dialog to run killall gnome-panel. There was nothing in the backtrace after the initial startup messages (one for each dependency!) and it noting when I terminated it. The problem occurred when I was using an xpra session to an instance of thunderbird running under another user account on the same machine. [Bug 610930] [NEW] Nautilus crashes when trying to form preview of malformed SVG image.
Public bug reported: Symptoms: Nautilus crashes when trying to form preview of malformed SVG image e.g. when opening the containing folder. If the image is placed on the Desktop, Nautilus will go into crash-restart loop. Culprit: Malformed SVG file that has style attribute containing zero length property value. Few examples below: First perfectly OK svg file. - example.svg - WORKING 8 (file cutline) svg circle style=fill:red cx=100 cy=100 r=100/ /svg 8 Removed the red to make zero length fill-value. Will crash nautilus. - example.svg - NONWORKING -8 svg circle style=fill: cx=100 cy=100 r=100/ /svg 8 Added whitespace to make fill-value non zero length. This works again, although the circle will be completely black. - example.svg - WORKING 8 svg circle style=fill: cx=100 cy=100 r=100/ /svg 8 Added standard delimiter right after the :. Fill-value is again zero- length and causes Nautilus to crash. - example.svg - NONWORKING -8 svg circle style=fill:; cx=100 cy=100 r=100/ /svg 8 So it is pretty clear that style attribute containing zero length property value will cause troubles. Hopefully this will help to find and fix the bug. [Bug 575410] Re: clock-applet freezes when clicking on time
Hi there. I prevented You to receive some other messages from me: from July 13 till now I experienced days when the but appeared and days when the bug vanished. Today I tried a workaround read from bug #439448 - comment #205 - I added a 3 seconds delay at gnome-panel startup. Then I tried to reboot my sytem MANY TIMES and now I can say that the clock applet works correctly at startup. This is not a bug fix but a simply workaround. This message repeats several times with different names of the temporary file. Thunderbird takes very long to start and the window is grayed for a longer time. Also during the Thunderbird session the window grays very often and freezes, especially it grays half a minute on the download of every single newsgroup message. All this does not happen when starting Thunderbird locally on the desktop of the Maverick box. [Bug 610982] Re: Problems when running gconf-based applications on a remote desktop
Some additional notes: 1. My Inbox contains around 10 mails. To avoid getting hit by bug 518336 I have turned off the global search. 2. Last week thunderbird-bin consumed 100% CPU, but after a kernel update to fix bug 609113 thunderbird did not consume 100% CPU any more while it is frozen/grayed. 3. During the freeze (grayed) phases Thunderbird probably tries to access GConf and times out, but I am not sure what really happens. -- Problems when running gconf-based applications on a remote desktop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/610982 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gconf in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
