[Bug 611583] [NEW] Saving as UTF-16/UCS-2 does not include the BOM character
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gedit Usually when saving a file as UTF-16 and UCS-2, a BOM character will be inserted at the start of the file. This does not happen in gedit. The BOM would be 0xFFFE for LE and 0xFEFF for BE. Inserting the character is optional in UTF-16 but recommended. It is also required in UCS-2. [Bug 222290] Re: users-admin won't let you change anything about a user with invalid username
Under Lucid, I created a user named test.test with useradd and can confirm that that user was then editable with users-admin, so I guess this bug can be closed. Some interesting things discovered in my investigation completely tangential to this bug, but perhaps warranting a bug report of their own: useradd allows users to be created with punctuation marks, but adduser does not. useradd will not allow usernames containing periods, even though periods are allowed according to IEEE Std 1003.1-2001, as adduser informs me. Using useradd to add a user whose name begins with a hypen is allowed, but that user can then not be removed by userdel. It also can't be removed by users-admin or deluser and it seems the only way is to edit /etc/passwd manually. This is obviously problematic. In fact, useradd allows adding users with just about any name. I added a user named k$^! and although this apparently worked, it did not display correctly in users-admin. It was editable, but name displayed was incorrect. In fact, the username displayed was my username. Adding a user with funny punctuation via useradd, and then removing it with userdel worked okay. Adding a user with funny punctuation via useradd and then removing it with deluser, on the other hand, caused problems, including some bizarre spurious error messages apparently caused by a lack of clean string handling in the shell script. Observation: it would be nice if there were a unified, authoritative backend for handling operations on /etc/passwd; it seems that, as is typical of Linux, we have too many chefs and too many conflicting, incompatible standards. Such a backend would simplify users-admin, as well. -- users-admin won't let you change anything about a user with invalid username https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/90 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 290150] Re: does not support lame mp3 gapless tag
Since all GStreamer based applications seem affected this is rather a problem of the current GStreamer decoder plugins and/or within the GStreamer pipeline. In the repos the following packages offer Gstreamer decoding support *Both fluendo MP3 packages (why are there two of them?) *gstreamer0.10-plugins ugly *gstreamer-ffmpeg The fluendo plugins seem to be based on the frauenhoffer reference implementation of MP3, the other plugins seem to be compiled against the libmad library. None decoder is compiled against the mpg123 decoder which proves within the mpg123 command line tool that it is actually able to handle the LAME info tag correctly. Links: *http://www.mpg123.de/ *http://gst.homeunix.net/?by-user=t An attempt by Stefan Kost to get the mpg123 decoder into gstreamer obviously came to nothing in March 2009: http://gstreamer- devel.966125.n4.nabble.com/mpg123-GStreamer-plugin-td971440.html Probably forgotten since there was no further communication. -- does not support lame mp3 gapless tag https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/290150 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 399747] Re: After program runs for a while Sudoku game stops responding to mouse clicks properly
Charlie, Since I booted that Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meercat CD, when I get an Update notice and I try to perform the updates, it wants me to mount the Maverick Meercat CD. Obviously it wrote something on my disk that is now affecting my updates. How do I fix this? Larry On Sat, Jul 24, 2010 at 4:14 PM, Larry Pearson mespo...@gmail.com wrote: Charlie, I burned the CD using InfraRecorder on Windows Vista and tried booting it. It came up and said No init found. Try passing init= bootarg. Sorry, I have no clue as to how to proceed. Larry On Wed, Jul 21, 2010 at 2:40 PM, Charlie Kravetz charlie-...@ubuntu.comwrote: Thanks for responding. It is not really necessary to install Maverick (which will become 10.10) to test with it. You can download the latest ISO image, and use the live CD to run Maverick for a test. That way it will not install anything on your current system and save you the possible problems associated with trying to backup, install something else, and then restore what you already had. Simply download from http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . After burning to a cd, you can restart with the cd in the drive and choose try without installing when asked. Do not allow it to install. This will give you the actual development environment to test in, without touching the already installed and working version you have. Thanks for helping with this. [Bug 611782] [NEW] Support /away in IRC chat
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: empathy /away is one of the common IRC client commands that Empathy does not implement. It would be most useful if, in place of or in addition to an /away for IRC Empathy would respect my general away/available status in IRC.
