[Bug 623794] [NEW] evolution address book has quit unexpectedly

2010-08-25 Thread Deric Venra
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Ubuntu Version: 10.10 maverick

Problem: I have had this problem since trying evolution, previous

quits when trying to compose a message and an address is looked up from
the address book.

[Bug 613143] Re: Theme settings do not apply fully

2010-08-25 Thread MrMacman2u
Having the same issue here on the 32 bit x86 version of 10.10. When I am
running Compiz and a new theme is chosen, all the elements correctly
change EXCEPT the window border. The only way to change the window
border is to choose Customize and set it manually to the correct
theme.

Quite annoying and could be very confusing to newcomers! I doubt it's
considered a show-stopper, but still, it's glitch that didn't exist in
previous versions so I suppose it's a regression.

[Bug 623435] Re: revert old behavoir of keyboard layout indicator: we wants use flags!

2010-08-25 Thread Karl Lattimer
The screenshot here is the desired outcome. However, the background
rectangle and the two letter name for the layout are slightly more
difficult. Requiring some investigation into all the available
abbreviations and a solution to deal with the overall size of the text
and an API change to libindicator to change the background, unless we
can find a decent way to skin an icon only.

We decided to stick with just a label for now until we can get to
exactly where we want it to be.

My question is, how were you changing the icon in the first place? From
what I've seen of the code the text was extracted and applied directly,
which is the behaviour we've tried to mimic here. There was no themable
icon, or was there?

@Seb128, what might be possible is to set the flag icon which was used
in the status icon menu to be used in place of the keyboard icon, then
we've got flag + label. Still not 100% sure how easy that'll be but I
can give it a go.

[Bug 610600] Re: Serious video performance regression in cheese (2.28.1-2.30.1)

2010-08-25 Thread Robert Ancell
Taking out the videorate and videoscale components both of which should
not be doing anything I don't think (i.e. the rate and resolution from
the camera is fine) makes the video work faster. These elements have
not changed from cheese 2.28.1 indicating a possible GStreamer problem.
Removing these elements may not work on differing hardware?

[Bug 189288] Re: Couldn't open display computer:/// Places Computer

2010-08-25 Thread Łukasz Czerwiński
I got the same error on Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid). In the beginning everything was
OK. The error 'Could not display computer:. Nautilus cannot handle computer
locations.' started to appear after I had changed system language (or maybe
just opened Administration - Language support and downloaded missing language
packages for my language - Polish). Then I have set the language to English,
but it didn't help.
Reinstalling nautilus (sudo aptitude reinstall nautilus) didn't solve the
problem.

[Bug 481576] Re: Action on critical battery is not triggered - gnome-power-manager

2010-08-25 Thread elq
Some additional information to my last post:

I figured out that the solution suggest by Maciej Strzelecki, setting
use_time_for_policy to false, worked in my case (HP dv3550eg, ubuntu
10.04 64-bit).

!! It is important that you either restart the system or kill gnome-
power-manager and start it again after changing any settings (see post
by bivanbi) Otherwise it won't accept the changes. !!

If you are curious and want to see all options available for gpm, run
gconf-editor and look for gnome-power-manager in apps. A short
description for each parameter is available.

Good luck to make your system shutdown/suspend properly.

[Bug 139806] Re: Rhythmbox should allow you to sync part of the library with an SD card

2010-08-25 Thread Neo Law
I also agree.

In short, you can take a look at the Autofill feature of winamp.

Music collection in computer is 60GB. Phone SD card only holds up to
2GB. I wanna fill 1.5GB, then how ?

Type in some (optional) criteria to filter the musics and click
Autofill which automatically remove the musics in SD card and fills
with new (random) musics meeting the criteria.

There were three reasons why I am not 100% linux user :

1. Nothing to substitute winamp's autofill
2. Nothing to substitute FL Studio and
3. Games (which can be substituted with a PS3 hopefully).

2010-08-25 Thread meisterplanlos
This bug is definitely not solved. The solution using gksudo (or
something similar) is really a pain. Everytime my laptop's backlight
changes an authentication dialog is popping up. That should be solved
in a more elegant way (is it even possible without root privileges?!)

Cheers.

[Bug 613826] Re: cursor disappear after screen saver locks screen

2010-08-25 Thread Henry
I had the same bug in 10.04.1 but from today on the behavior changed to
the worse.

Now when the screensaver is stopped by entering the password for the
first time, it starts again just after the desktop reappears. The second
time it is finished but I loose keyboard focus to the whole desktop.

Alt+Tab does not work anymore, Switching the workspace by keyboard
does not work anymore. I have to either switch the application or the
workspace with the mouse and everything is fine again.

The behavior is independent of how the screensaver was started - time or
shortcut. The behavior is independent of the application. But since it
does not affect the mouse focus, one might not realize the bug e.g. in
the browser immediately.

Since it started today, I can clearly describe the changes to my system:

Start-Date: 2010-08-24 12:24:42
Upgrade: python-lazr.restfulclient (0.9.11-1ubuntu1, 0.9.11-1ubuntu1.1),
libvlc2 (1.0.6-1ubuntu1.1, 1.0.6-1ubuntu1.2), udev (151-12, 151-12.1), vlc-nox
(1.0.6-1ubuntu1.1, 1.0.6-1ubuntu1.2), libgudev-1.0-0 (151-12, 151-12.1), vlc
(1.0.6-1ubuntu1.1, 1.0.6-1ubuntu1.2), libudev0 (151-12, 151-12.1),
vlc-plugin-pulse (1.0.6-1ubuntu1.1, 1.0.6-1ubuntu1.2), vlc-data
(1.0.6-1ubuntu1.1, 1.0.6-1ubuntu1.2), libvlccore2 (1.0.6-1ubuntu1.1,
1.0.6-1ubuntu1.2), binutils (2.20.1-3ubuntu6, 2.20.1-3ubuntu7), inkscape
(0.47.0-2ubuntu2, 0.48.0-0ubuntu1~10.04~ricotz1)
End-Date: 2010-08-24 12:25:45

After that a reboot and everything started to act much weirder than
usual.

This bug affect me too.

Manually editing the fstab is not a normal and easy way for a new user.

All partitions should be mounted by default. The experienced user will
have the knowledge to modify this behaviour. And as ubuntu / kubuntu are
meaned to be easy to use, the modification of this behaviour should be
done by an easy GUI.

thank you for taking care

[Bug 390364] Re: unable to connect to newer Mac OS X computers using ARD 3.1+ or bonjour screensharing

2010-08-25 Thread Dominic Evans
Good news from Jonh Wendell (upstream). A working patch has been
received and committed to enable support for connecting to Apple Remote
Desktop servers using their proprietary authentication scheme.

This should naturally be fixed in a future release of gtk-vnc and

This was fixed in gtk-vnc trunk (bug 570284), and the fix will be released in
 the next version of vinagre.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since
this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work,
I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.
Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

[Bug 556933] Re: Update standard folders should add language links to folders, not rename them

2010-08-25 Thread papukaija
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xdg-user-dirs

This applies to all Ubuntu (Gnome) versions up to 10.04.
Note: understand Bureau below as the name of any standard folder in any
language. For example, also Картинки = Pictures folder name in Russian.

  Summary:
This report explain some of the many pitfalls caused by the renaming of
Desktop to Bureau.
These pitfalls can cause programs, scripts and the system itself to misbehave.
A drastic solution is to make a Bureau - Desktop symbolic link instead.
Furthermore, this seems very simple to implement, it almost already works.

When a user changes the language of its profile she/he is asked a funny
question in Desktop-1.png.
Update standard folders to new language?
He/she does not understand and he replies yes. From then on, obscure magic
happens.
- Among other folders, ~/Desktop is renamed Bureau, but only if it is empty.
+ Among other folders, ~/Desktop is renamed ~/Bureau, but only if it is empty.
Let's assume it's not. Then a new ~/Bureau is created beside.
If the user drags New file (Desktop-2.png) a little bit, it disappears
(Desktop-3.png).
It will reappear after the next Login, at which time all the other Desktop
objects disappear.
Then she/he makes a screenshot and is told that a file she/he doesn't see
does exist (Desktop-3.png).
Nothing is lost, the user has 2 desktops, Desktop and Bureau, only now
showing, hard to guess.
The same applies for Documents, Music, etc... total confusion.
If some program unaware of this game looks for Desktop, it won't find it.
Etc... etc... Confusion looks like the comments of (different) Bug #209513.

Every time one refers to ~/Desktop, it's a mistake, and that's not only in
programs...
Every time someone writes cd ~/Desktop in sample code on the Web, and even
worse in a script, they're doing a BIG MISTAKE. They should explain that, if
and only if their system implements standard folders renaming, French people
must type cd ~/Bureau, Russian ones cd ~/работая стол etc, even more
complicated for the script. HOW SIMPLE !!!

This is obviously not the way it should work.
This is NOT Windows. We can use symbolic links.
  Instead of renaming ~/Desktop, let's make a ~/Bureau - Desktop symbolic link.
EVERYTHING will continue to be able to refer to Desktop unchanged.
And the user interface (Desktop, Nautilus...) will happily refer to ~/Bureau
all the same.
It will contain the same data, because the same folder.
The only setting needed is the name to use : Bureau, meaning ~/Bureau,
redirected at will.
It's best to create the aliasing without asking the user any question.
There can be a setting for those really wanting to see the folders' names in
any language they choose.
If the user changes language again, it's best to leave ~/Bureau intact in
case it's referred to somewhere.

The BEST OF ALL is that it already works. Almost...
Before xdg-user-dirs comes into play, make sure Desktop is not empty and
create ~/Bureau - Desktop.
xdg-user-dirs will not change that and the aliasing will work free of all
those inconveniences.

  User experience.
The above kludge has been used for a 6-language 10-users couple of Ubuntu
8.04 systems.
Beside ~/ being crowded with aliases in 6 languages, the only inconvenience
has been Picasa.
They found 6 times the pictures they eagerly looked for.
They will have to learn that scanning a filesystem must not follow aliases.

[Bug 615047] Re: [Maverick Alpha] asks for root permission to do: gnome-power-backlight-helper --get-max-brightness

2010-08-25 Thread John Mylchreest
Since this change yesterday (and the corresponding fix in #614039 which
I also suffered), I'm now being prompted constantly (repetitively) when
either clicking on the brightness applet, or changing brightness via the
applet. This continues until I kill gnome-power-manager.

Should polkit be caching the authentication request?

I also recommend increasing the importance on this bug. I have been
experiencing this problem for at least two months, on several computers
running Ubuntu 10.04. At best, it's an inconvenience, having to try to
pick the file correctly several times. At worst, it could lead to
serious privacy concerns. Are there any knowledgeable people working on
a fix for this? It's been over a month since there has been any activity
on this bug.

Is there some place (url) to ask the facebook ppl to allow this?

The thing is that we don't need Facebook to do anything. We just need to be
able to create local groups in Empathy to organize contacts.

Is anyone reading this thread who can take it back out of Won't Fix status

I would strongly go for Depends. It's clear that there is quite a few

impression.

[Bug 556933] Re: Update standard folders should add language links to folders, not rename them

2010-08-25 Thread papukaija
Let us try to be clear. What are you calling a folder renaming *issue*?
- You wrote about it in this bug's description Among other folders, ~/Desktop
is renamed ~/Bureau, but only if it is empty.

If a folder contains data, it would be crazy to rename it.
-That's what xdg-user-dirs is supposed to do when the a user changes system's
language.

In consequence of that bug the system MUST keep TWO desktops: Desktop and
Bureau. The consequences for the user is to have desktop data hidden and maybe
unmovable. This is proving enough that the folder renaming method is the
buggiest thing on earth.
-How would you fix bug 1?

A symbolic link is avoiding that bug by having a single directory with two
names.
-Avoiding isn't the same as fixing a bug. (see the changelog for the recent
system update for upstart).

It does EXACTLY the same thing (same results) but in a manner without a bug
but in a manner without a bug.
-How can you be so sure that someone will write and package your solution
without any bugs?

'If you think of it twice, making symbolic links does indeed create localized
versions of these directories.'
-For the user it looks so, but technically a symbolic link isn't the same as a
folder/directory.

Renaming directories is the worst thing to do.
-And challenging Microsoft is the worst thing to do for fixing bug 1 instead
of abandoning the whole Ubuntu project.

If you're not sure of that, try renaming your /etc directory
- /etc is just a default folder name. Just edit some config file and there you
go. Or an other way: Make a new partition to your hdd/ssd or use an existing
one from an internal/externel drive, move the etc folder (and rename it at the
same to eg. mysystem) to that partition and edit needed config files. Now you
could have moved and renamed your etc folder.

I have no acquaintance with Debian and I do not want to report to Debian. The
main reason is that, as you say it yourself, I do not want Debian to prevent
Ubuntu improvements.
Bear in mind that this package is just synced from Debian. Debian gets the
package from upstream.

I want to keep Ubuntu deciding if they want to apply simple fixes with high
benefits.
That would be much easier to do if there would be something to apply (to
patch).

It's up to Ubuntu to decide if they want to also send the report to Debian and
wait 3 years for the fix to come.
- No, the decision is already made and has to be followed at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#A%20bug%20that%20should%20be%20handled%20upstream

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
