[Bug 642839] Re: Evolution adds 'Sent from Ubuntu' signature by default

Ubuntu sticking on advertisements at the end of messages by default
looks very unprofessional. I hope the change is undone before the final
release.

[Bug 630292] Re: Paste in global application menu is not active whilst using gnome-terminal

2010-09-20 Thread Adam Guthrie
I've investigated a little further. gnome-terminal connects a callback
to the activate signal on the Edit menu:

  action = gtk_action_group_get_action (action_group, Edit);
  g_signal_connect (action, activate,
G_CALLBACK (edit_menu_activate_callback), window);

When not using the application menu (UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= ), this callback
is fired whenever the Edit menu is opened.

However, when using the application menu, this callback is fired once
when the terminal window opens and not when the Edit menu is opened.

This callback checks the clipboard and activates paste, hence this would
seem to be the cause of this problem.

[Bug 643332] [NEW] gnome-panel crashes (and reloads) when launching applications

2010-09-20 Thread Leonor Palmeira
Public bug reported:

Dear all,

my gnome-panel crashes whenever I launch an application through it (and
restarts) and does not launch any application. I suspect this comes from
not being able to find the correct /path for the given application.
Indeed, for my personal gnome-panel icons, if I change the path in the
Properties to the full path of the application, the application is
launched smoothly without crashing gnome-panel.

My $PATH includes all necessary paths, including /usr/bin.

Any idea on how to fix this, as I am totally unable to launch any
application through the gnome menu...

I did a recent upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS, so it might be Lucid Lynx
bug.

Thanks,
Leonor.

[Bug 643343] [NEW] Login via gdm fails, yet startx is working

2010-09-20 Thread Ahmed El-Mahmoudy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Hello, I am using 64-bit Lucid (10.04.1) on my desktop, and at the
beginning gdm was working just fine. Yet after one logout, no one is
able to login to the machine again. What happens when someone logins, is
that gdm just restarts !

I also tried login using Failsafe gnome or xterm sessions, they still
fail.

Yet if I login from the console run startx it works. Which made me
consider that the problem is in gdm not the X server.

[Bug 643367] [NEW] Music library contains documents but no music

2010-09-20 Thread James Kemp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

After upgrading to 10.10 beta I discovered that none of the music that
this machine had on it was there any more (although perhaps not a
rhythmbox issue directly - the ~/music directory was gone and instead in
~/Documents there is a 'my music' folder with lots of empty temporary
directories).

The music library does have two open office write documents in it, which
is strange as neither have any embedded music and both correctly have
the .odt file extension.

  Hello,

I also agree: this could be a good idea even if choice is clearly
proposed to the user when he first configures his account on Evolution.

Of course it can easily be changed, but for new users, and those who
will use Ubuntu for professional work, it should not be hidden by
default, as opensource mind it has to be opened and optional.

Best regards,

Xavier

Re: [Bug 365270] Re: Move is Copy + Thrash, should be Move that removes all traces of the first.

2010-09-20 Thread Knut
  Dear Peter Smith,

I have managed the implementation os several email clients with a larger
distribution than Evolution.
You have some serious misunderstandings to cope with.
How Trash is implemented in Evolution is not my concern. If this is
a virtual folder, the bug is even worse.
Just implement a bit that flags that the message has been deleted and is
not to be shown, and attach it to the freelist of spare slots in the
MBOX. That will DELETE it. Just never show it as recoverable.

IMAP - do not care. If they do not have a MOVE it is their problem - and
as you say you have to write a dummy MOVE that makes a COPY+ERASE+
EXPUNGE. Report this problems with MS Exchange to Microsoft. Attach a
Mp3 dictation of the bug you find in MS Exchange - it makes it easier
for them to read the message. Writing an IMAP server will teach you a
lesson or 10 about that side of the fence. It is very easy with a RDBMS
to implement it.

If you cannot maintain conceptual clarity on a simple software module as
Evolution, you have a huge problem.

If it cannot be done this simple, then scratch the entire Evolution
project - it is obviously not in a state that is manageable. it is
simpler to start all over without a history of patches to trace.

No - I report a problem, I get angered by ignorant response, I find in
the Bugzilla several errors that are indicative to not knowing the right
number of objects held, and I get fed up by silly responses.

Regarding your vision of the future bugs with e.g. mobile phones
attached, rest assured I know vastly more about this than you. I use
Thunderbird, and have no problems what so ever, and recommend to those
left using the Evolution spaghetti, move toi this and regain control of
your Inbox - and allow synchronisation and other functionality. And Paul
Smith is not around to waste your time.

On ma-20.09.2010 07:02, Paul Smith wrote:
Knut: your comments reveal a relatively shallow understanding of the
email environment. And they show you haven't understood the real
situation with Evolution. As for discussions of how IMAP servers ought
to work, you should be filing those bugs with the teams that create the
IMAP servers; I'm sure they'll welcome your input.

The comments around moving files into/out of Trash shows you haven't
read the various discussions of the problem (even to bugs marked as
duplicates in Gnome Bugzilla). There is no real Trash folder in
Evolution, so there is no move or copy of email from any other folder
into Trash. Trash is a virtual folder: it doesn't exist physically, but
instead is constructed as a user-interface artifact, containing all the
messages that are marked as deleted. Thus, to delete a message (have it
appear in Trash) all that has to be done is mark that message as
deleted. To undelete a message, you just remove the deleted attribute
and it reappears exactly where it was before... because it was never
moved anywhere else. There is no copy involved with delete, no extra
space consumed, etc. And similarly, there is no copy involved with
 undelete either.

This is why messages appear in Trash when you move them to another
folder: as I've described there is no MOVE operation in IMAP, so a MOVE
must be implemented as a COPY followed by a delete. When you mark a
message deleted that message appears in the Trash folder.

I do understand Mathias's frustration, but unfortunately it's not so
simple. Mathias you suggest it's just a matter of Evolution hiding
these details, but that cannot be done reliably. There is only one
delete flag in IMAP, so there is no way to make a distinction on the
server between messages that are deleted by hand, and those that are
deleted as a side-effect of a desired move operation. They are
identical as far as any IMAP client is concerned.

Yes, of course, Evolution could maintain its own local list of messages
that should be hidden rather than displayed in Trash because they are a
side-effect of a copy/delete. However this list would be present only
in that instance of Evolution. If you ever attached to your IMAP server
using a different Evolution (say on a laptop or work system), or you
used a webmail client or another IMAP client (maybe on your smart phone,
etc.), all those extra deleted messages WOULD appear there, and you'd
have even more confusion and bugs reported.

[Bug 642839] Re: Evolution adds 'Sent from Ubuntu' signature by default

In one way, this doesn't affect me because I don't use Evolution. In
another way, it affects me greatly because the fact that it's been done
makes me mistrust Ubuntu. What do I do now, either a) watch every single
future change to any packages I use in case someone thinks it's a good
idea to use them as a vehicle to make me spam my contacts and look like
an idiot in the process, or b) switch all my machines back to Debian?

[Bug 591693] Re: Wrong browser is launched when double clicking a link desktop entry (.desktop) file

2010-09-20 Thread Doug Morse
Hi, I seem to have a very similar problem: default browser of Firefox
seems to work fine across the board EXCEPT for when I double-click on a
.desktop file acting as a URL (i.e., like with Jakob, created by
dragging a link to the desktop). In my case, however, Opera is the
correct browser. At one point in time, I did have Opera set as the
default browser, but that was about 6 months ago. This is the first
time I've created desktop URL links, however, and hence also the first
time I'm experiencing this problem.

[Bug 642839] Re: Evolution adds 'Sent from Ubuntu' signature by default

2010-09-20 Thread hnrkg
This is definitely a move in the wrong direction. It should be up to the
users to define the content of the signature of their e-mails. Ubuntu
has nothing to do with the contents of it's users signatures! If it
would be relevant for the user to have this kind of information in the
signature, the user would add it himself. I don't think that this even
should be an option to add this kind signature.

Advertising should be done elsewhere, not in users e-mails. It is just
cheap.

[Bug 643446] [NEW] Evolution does not show subfolders of IMAP account

2010-09-20 Thread tamalet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In Maverick Meerkat beta, evolution sometimes (but not always) does not show
the subfolders of an IMAP mail account.
Even a newly created subfolder will not show up.

However, I can see the subfolders in
~/.evolution/mail/imap/account/folders/INBOX/subfolders.
When this happens loggin out or even rebooting does not solve the problem.
I was able to workaround it by disabling and enabling the account again.

I attach one screenshoot with the problem and one where it is working
fine.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-09-20 Thread Maia Kozheva
I see no reason to at least make the button placement configurable in
the UI.

As it stands, since it's only configurable via a hidden gconf setting,
people turn to applications like Ubuntu Tweak, with known security
issues, to change it. It would be nice to have a separate UI to
specifically configure Ayatana's additions to GNOME.

convenient to use the text search tool to locate the image, then scroll

[Bug 643456] [NEW] panel doesn't place itself properly on desktop on login

2010-09-20 Thread Monica
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

gnome-panel

The panel should locate itself at the startup on the top in a short form
(not expanded), but instead it place itself on the middle of the
screen. If you change the properties of the panel for example to the
left, it will turn but won't be placed on the right side (it rotates in
the middle of the screen). The panel adopts the correct properties after
you expand it and then shrink it back.

[Bug 642839] Re: Evolution adds 'Sent from Ubuntu' signature by default

2010-09-20 Thread bjb1959
OMG people.. Really?? you have nothing better to do with your day then
fret over whether or not there is a default signature in a sent email??
REALLY I have an idea. don't use Evolution or, better yet, don't use
Ubuntu. I get those little blackberry and iPhone messages all the time
and I must say I have never even given them a second thought. Maybe that
is because I am just not as enlightened as all of you are. I use Ubuntu
with Thunderbird and Gmail (mostly just Gmail though) and I couldn't
care less if they want to stick a default signature in emails on
Evolution. If it bothers you turn it off... If you are ashamed that you
use Ubuntu then turn it off...

[Bug 591693] Re: Wrong browser is launched when double clicking a link desktop entry (.desktop) file

2010-09-20 Thread Doug Morse
[possibly SOLVED]

I have located and corrected the bug, at least in my case.

SHORT ANSWER

Edit $HOME/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list, find the section
[Added Associations] and within that section fine a line that starts
with

  text/html=

and make your preferred browser the FIRST entry after the equal sign
(=).

LONG ANSWER

The file $HOME/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list seems to be the
first thing checked for running a .desktop file (see attached example),
even preempting System - Preferences - Preferred Applications and
alternatives set by running sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-
browser.

The first part of my mimeapps.list file used to be:

  [Added Associations]
  text/html=opera.desktop;firefox.desktop;[]

and I changed it to:

  [Added Associations]
  text/html=firefox.desktop;opera.desktop;[]

As soon as I did so, double-clicking on a .desktop link / URL started
opening firefox instead of opera (which is what I wanted). (Note that I
also deleted the mimeinfo.cache file in the same directory, by I'm
confident it was not the source of the problem -- I can explain why if
needed).

Thus, it would appear that whatever entry comes FIRST on the
text/html= line is what Gnome runs when a user double-clicks on a
desktop URL file. IMHO this is a bug, as I would think that most users,
such as Jakob and myself, expect the Preferred Application setting be
used, not some setting in a file that we have to know about and can only
affect by editing manually.

More generally, I suspect this behavior holds for all entries listed
under the [Added Associations] section. I would suggest that, if more
than one association exists for a file type specified in this section,
Gnome then include an Open with... option on the right-clicking on the
.desktop file, and that the subsequent dialog box allowing the user to
select which program to run also have a checkbox with labeled something
like Remember this application for '' files. When checked, Gnome
would then re-order the corresponding entry in the [Added Associations]
section such that the choosen application is listed first.

In other words, I think that right-clicking on a .desktop file should
give the same Open with... options as when right-clicking on a
non-.desktop file. Granted, the underlying implementation might be
notably different, because Gnome would have to look *inside* the
.desktop file to get the mimetype instead of just examining the filename
extension, but I can't imagine that doing so would be that difficult.

[Bug 643484] [NEW] Keyring messes up on fresh Ubuntu 10.10 install

2010-09-20 Thread Ingo Gerth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

When I installed Ubuntu 10.10 I enabled the feature login automatically.
After the first login I was asked to enter my default-keyring password.
Gnome keyring would not accept my password for some reason, so I deleted
the keyring. Then, when I tried to enter my WLAN credentials, it asked
me a couple of times for a password. Although now it actually works, it
has produced a weired mess. Th screenshot appended says it all.

[Bug 633303] Re: gnome-terminal crashed with signal 5 in _XError() when Mutter is restarted

2010-09-20 Thread Chris Coulson
Ok, I think what is happening here is that from
terminal_window_composited_changed_cb, it is passing an invalid
GdkWindow to terminal_util_x11_set_net_wm_desktop. It seems to be
passing the one that was just destroyed when unrealizing the
TerminalWindow.

I will test a patch for this in a minute

[Bug 449468] Re: Seahorse has no manpage

2010-09-20 Thread era
However, the man page is basically useless. It erroneously suggests you
should try info seahorse to read some actual documentation, but there
is no info file in the seahorse package and apt-file search
info/seahorse comes up blank. There does appear to be a set of Yelp
files, maybe those are what's intended?

[Bug 441121] Re: seahorse sucks CPU, and RAM, causes swap storm, makes system completely unresponsive

2010-09-20 Thread era
While my system works well enough for me to be typing this, I have a
load average of about 5 since after I opened up seahorse, and top(1)
shows seahorse using 90-100% of the CPU.

[Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty because gdm starts before nvidia driver is ready

2010-09-20 Thread John S. Gruber
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 615549 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/615549

@Jamie:
Looks like Martin is taking care of it in #615549. If I recall correctly, it
will be (has been?) uploaded to the proposed queue and, after testing, it will
be released to Lucid.

[Bug 622691] Re: package seahorse 2.30.0-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: no se puede acceder al archivo: No existe el archivo o directorio

2010-09-20 Thread era
I can't read the bug report, but I see this at the end of
DpkgTerminalLog.txt:

 Log started: 2010-08-22 11:56:05
 dpkg: error al procesar
 /var/cache/apt/archives/seahorse_2.30.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb (--unpack):
no se puede acceder al archivo: No existe el archivo o directorio

Even with my lame Spanish skills, I can translate this into no such
file or directory. It appears to be an apt error. Thus, reassigning.

** Package changed: seahorse (Ubuntu) = apt (Ubuntu)
