Re: [Compiz] [Bug 356702] Re: Tooltips stick when switching desktops (Compiz)
This is not a bug - EWMH requires that tooltip windows are marked sticky iirc [1] [1] http://standards.freedesktop.org/wm-spec/wm-spec-1.4.html#id2551529 On Tue, Sep 28, 2010 at 10:37 AM, Stuart Bishop 356...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote: I can reliably (and constantly) reproduce this under Lucid and current Maverick. 1) Move the mouse over an icon in a different workspace in the workspace switcher. 2) Wait for the tool tip to appear. 3) Click 4) Move the mouse outside of the workspace switcher before the transition effect is complete. If you have difficulty triggering, install compizconfig-settings- manager, go to Desktop Wall in the CompizConfig Settings manager, select the Viewport Switching tab, and increase the Wall Sliding Duration from the default of 0.3 to 2.0. Unfortunately it is not that well-defined. This is mainly a race condition between loading DRM modules (such as nvidia) and gdm starting up. [Bug 195483] Re: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change
KennoVO - trying to respond in a less inflammatory style, your attached links made interesting reading, effectively discussing the absence of the settings used in my/other amended profiles for CD QualityMP3 before addressing the proposed use of xingmux, as then briefly revealed to the world in the Maverick Alpha2 development release. Please note that back in 2007, rather than using a 'down among the weeds' hex editor, I used EncSpot which rather uniquely produces histograms of resulting MP3s. Windows-hosted, sadly it's no longer supported although source code may still be available for its resurrection as a Linux tool. At the time, it confirmed that Sound Juicer defaults produced 128K CBR. Best advice was to use Windows CDEX with modified settings, effectively in a multi-pass operation to achieve 32K-320K VBR results as again confirmed by encSpot, but I found that by consulting gst-inspect lame, I could achieve similar results with Sound Juicer, as further confirmed by subjective tests. Since then there have been several reports of use of other tools and players, including VLC Player, that falsely report 32K-320K VBR encoded streams as 128K CBR, without folk simply listening to the difference, such is the blind trust in such tools, reinforced by a disbelief in faulty or limited software. This leads me to wonder what 'analysis' tools you guys have been using. Today, although there is the rather complex Linux mp3diags, I prefer to use the simple checkmp3 to report on encoded streams, plus actually listening to the results. However, with my recently restored vision I have searched for and found my original test CD, a Deutsche Grammophon recording of the Planet Suite. Also, although several PC failures have lost other information, I still have a working copy of EncSpot, so I have just run tests on three differently-created copies of the Jupiter sound track I attach a text file of checksum results, plus four EncSpot JPEG image files. ** Attachment added: checkmp3 text plus four image files https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sound-juicer/+bug/195483/+attachment/1647589/+files/Maverick%20Alpha2%20Histogram.jpg -- Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195483 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I forgot, you also need to disable this option for the user ('sudo -u gdm' will only deal with the gdm login screen): gconftool-2 --type bool -s /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/xrandr/turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup false I guess the easiest way to find out if you are affected by this bug is, to install the x11-xserver-utils package and run 'xrandr -q' - normally this should list a proper mode - it doesn't in my case. You can also run 'sudo get-edid' from the read-edid package - if it fails, you'll likely hit this bug. -- Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640807 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 410288] Re: Nautilus does not handle FTP timeouts well
I have the same problem but it's easy to just restart the connection from nautilus and then save the file again from gedit and every thing would be fine, i agree that it's annoying but i never got the 0byte file problem, i just refresh from nautilus twice then the connection is back up. And i don't think its a hard problem to fix either, just sending a 'NOOP' signal to the ftp server and let the user choose how often it would be sent shouldn't be that hard. [Bug 195483] RE: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change
Ok, now these opinions about differences between results or different testing tools are silmply useless. Here we are searching for the cause of the bug and for the best solution to it. The cause was a buggy/misused gstramer plugin lame. Now developers rolled out lamemp3enc, a better interface to the same library. All we need is that the sound-juicer Gstreamer pipeline is changed to use it. So, which are the best default options? I don't know. But surely the optimal pipeline is the one i proposed above, taken from Maverick. (See gst-inspect lamemp3enc or my precedent message for reference) There are no other questions. [Bug 649676] [NEW] gnome-appearance-properties - multiple wallpaper preview with incorrect arrow icon
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center Low priority: Go to Appearances in Control Center. Go to Background. Select a multiple wallpaper - ie the Spaces one. You get an arrow underneath it to preview the images in the collection. Click on this to go to the next image. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: evolution - In Maverick Meerkat beta, evolution sometimes (but not always) does not show the subfolders of an IMAP mail account. + In Maverick Meerkat beta, evolution does not show the subfolders of an IMAP mail account. Even a newly created subfolder will not show up. However, I can see the subfolders in ~/.evolution/mail/imap/account/folders/INBOX/subfolders. [Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager
Computerjy could you run a valgrind for me? valgrind --leak-check=full gnome-power-manager ./outfile.valgrind 21 should do it, with the output redirected to outfile.valgrind. Run it for a long enough period so you believe you're experiencing a leak then hit ctrl+c which will end the logging session. You'll need to kill gnome- power-manager before you do this. Now once you do that, I'll interpret the logs best i can and see if there's an actual leak left behind. My testing ran for a good few hours on my laptop and came up with dbusmenu about 3 separate times, that hashtable is definitely fixed now as I found in my most recent valgrinding. All that seemed to be left were some references to Xorg and Xlib which are probably just false positives. -- memory leak in gnome-power-manager https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569273 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 647182] Re: spontaneous reboot on logging in xubuntu maverick
Two dist-upgrades later, and I have added a new user, and userdel-ed and useradd-ed my (normal) user. [Bug 195483] Re: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change
Long ago, when my hearing was a lot keener, Xing encoding in AudioCatalyst markedly improved upon Frauhofer encoding in AudioGrabber and was faster, so using a new implementation of what was a non-free product in Sound Juicer may provide a better result. I am puzzled at Ubuntu's discarding it after Maverick Alpha2 and assume that it will be re-instated or simply discarded for the 10-Oct-2010 release. Meanwhile, despite refutation that has included false accusations of results remaining 128K CBR rather than 32-320K VBR, the settings used by me have simply worked well, whilst Maverick Alpha2 settings are fine but a little strident to my old ears. When someone 'comes clean' about Maverick intentions, I will try out some subjective comparison tests on younger, keener hearing ears. It would be nice to think that there are no other questions, but I'm not yet convinced that it's actually broken, only mis-used, although that doesn't fit well with Canonical policy 'to fix what ain't broke'. -- Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195483 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 356702] Re: Tooltips stick when switching desktops (Compiz)
Re: Sam Spilsbury: This absolutely is a bug. Regardless of whether tooltips are marked sticky or not, they are obviously supposed to be transient. This bug says that in some fairly common circumstances, the tooltip shows up for the workspace switcher and then it NEVER GOES AWAY (unless you switch to another workspace again). I've never seen a tooltip that didn't go away after a short time, and any such tooltip is obviously buggy. [Bug 649816] Re: Deleting Many Files Rapidly Crashes Nautilus
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. [Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets
Okay, I can confirm that this bug is NOT caused by the panel background image. A few reboots after disabling the Ambiance theme's panel background, I got the corruption again. Now, I have yet to get the corruption using Lucid's version of the Dust theme, even though it also uses the Murrine engine. So, here are three configs on my laptop and their results: 1) Lucid with Ambiance theme: corruption 2) Karmic with Dust theme: corruption 3) Lucid with Dust theme: no corruption (after a few days of use w/ frequent rebooting... I will keep testing) Both Ambiance and Dust use the Murrine theme engine. If the Lucid version of the Dust theme can be verified to not have the corruption glitch, then we might be able to get some clues as to what exactly in the Murrine engine is causing this glitch. -- visual corruption affecting several panel applets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
