If you have difficulty triggering, install compizconfig-settings-
manager, go to Desktop Wall in the CompizConfig Settings manager, select
the Viewport Switching tab, and increase the Wall Sliding Duration from
the default of 0.3 to 2.0. You should now have plenty of time to trigger
 the race condition.

[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2010-09-28 Thread Usama Akkad
There is a new ALPHA (testing) workaround for this bug using MLterm API,

To test get the latest build of MLterm from sf.net, here are some
instructions:

you will need this packages build-essential, mercurial (to pull source
code), libvte-dev and libfribidi-dev

Start by getting the latest build:
$ hg clone  http://mlterm.hg.sourceforge.net:8000/hgroot/mlterm/mlterm

Then building:
$ cd mlterm
$./configure --with-type-engines=xcore,xft --enable-fribidi
$make
$cd gtk/
$make

ATTENTION: don't forget to backup libvte.so.9 (you might use locate to
find it) before continue.

Using the library from our build and linking,

$ cp mlterm/gtk/.libs/libvte.so.9.0.0 [where official libvte is installed]
$ ln -sf libvte.so.9.0.0 [where official libvte is installed]/libvte.so.9

http://mlterm.sf.net/gnome-terminal.JPG

Known issues:
* Gnome-terminal dose not start with compiz enabled
* Synaptic crashes when it should display terminal output

Please test ,report and help patching if possible. MLterm mail-list is:

2010-09-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gdm

char...@charles-laptop:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu maverick (development branch)
Release:10.10

After updating from the BETA release OR upon booting from the LiveCD,
the system will load through the Plymouth splash screen, then as the
desktop OR install dialogue SHOULD be loaded the screen goes corrupt.
It shows first vertical bands of black and white stripes of various
widths. Then the colors are loaded and the bands are the same but
colored.

I'm not sure if I'm filing this against the right package so this is a
WAG. If this is the wrong package then please point me to the correct
one.

Also, please direct me to any needed log files. I'm not sure what is
needed here. I'll have to barrow a camera to take a picture if you need
one. Obviously a screen shot isn't possible.

[Bug 648576] Re: quadrapassel freezes unpredictably during play

2010-09-28 Thread Julian Brelsford
quadrapassel is causing my machine to show unusual memory-usage
statistics (according to topand system monitor):

when it crashes, quadrapassel has a memory usage of about 36mb according
to top. top and system monitor show the total memory used by the system
at about 100% of 1GB physical memory available (plus a small amount of
swap used).

Closing quadrapassel causes the system to have a lot of free memory: it
goes down to only 34% of the 1GB of memory used, with the rest free.

[Bug 615549] Re: gdm starting too early for DRM modules to load, no video

2010-09-28 Thread Martin Pitt
Unfortunately it is not that well-defined. This is mainly a race
condition between loading DRM modules (such as nvidia) and gdm starting
up. So this should mainly be tested by people who are affected by this
bug, i. e. they do not get X start up, or with only the framebuffer
driver (meaning no 3D acceleration, poor video playback, and presumably
also problems on user switching).

[Bug 356702] Re: Tooltips stick when switching desktops (Compiz)

I've just realized the most common way I trigger this bug. I move my
mouse to the workspace switcher, click, and move my mouse back to my

pop up despite my mouse being nowhere near. It seems that the event for
the cursor leaving the workspace switcher is lost or ignored during the
transition and the applet still thinks it is inside its region.

[Bug 649610] [NEW] Impossible to sort the email accounts

[Bug 195483] Re: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change

2010-09-28 Thread Bruce R
KennoVO - trying to respond in a less inflammatory style, your attached
links made interesting reading, effectively discussing the absence of
the settings used in my/other amended profiles for CD QualityMP3 before
addressing the proposed use of xingmux, as then briefly revealed to the
world in the Maverick Alpha2 development release.

Please note that back in 2007, rather than using a 'down among the weeds'
hex editor, I used EncSpot which rather uniquely produces histograms of
resulting MP3s. Windows-hosted, sadly it's no longer supported although
source code may still be available for its resurrection as a Linux tool.

At the time, it confirmed that Sound Juicer defaults produced 128K CBR.
Best advice was to use Windows CDEX with modified settings, effectively
in a multi-pass operation to achieve 32K-320K VBR results as again
confirmed by encSpot, but I found that by consulting gst-inspect lame, I
could achieve similar results with Sound Juicer, as further confirmed by
subjective tests.

Since then there have been several reports of use of other tools and players,
including VLC Player, that falsely report 32K-320K VBR encoded streams
as 128K CBR, without folk simply listening to the difference, such is the blind
trust in such tools, reinforced by a disbelief in faulty or limited software.
This leads me to wonder what 'analysis' tools you guys have been using.

Today, although there is the rather complex Linux mp3diags, I prefer to use
the simple checkmp3 to report on encoded streams, plus actually listening
to the results.

However, with my recently restored vision I have searched for and found my
original test CD, a Deutsche Grammophon recording of the Planet Suite.
Also, although several PC failures have lost other information, I still have a
working copy of EncSpot, so I have just run tests on three differently-created
copies of the Jupiter sound track

I attach a text file of checksum results, plus four EncSpot JPEG image
files.

[Bug 643118] Re: [RV350] Desktop corruption – Screen only shows vertical bands

2010-09-28 Thread Tormod Volden
Looking at the time of the bug reporter's first post on the forums, it must
have happened with gnome-settings-daemon 2.31.91-0ubuntu2 or 2.31.91-0ubuntu3.
I would guess one of these changes is to be blamed:
  * debian/patches/08_xrandr_command.patch:
- still call gnome-display-properties to configure the display, the
control center changes didn't land this cycle (lp: #631761)
  * debian/gnome-settings-daemon.gconf-defaults:
- turn on external screens by default

[Bug 635856] [NEW] Standard Linux/Gnome Document Viewer will not print .pdf files

OK the details:

I have had trouble from the outset printing .pdf files as these always
produced a few smudges on the paper. This is using the standard
Document Viewer app. as above. I have now downloaded and installed
Adobe Viewer and printing is fine. Also, printing from a terminal with
the lp command works. I use a HP Laserjet P1005 printer, HPLIP
printing services, all of which including my Ubuntu are up-to-date. The
results of hp-check -t are below:

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

Initializing. Please wait...

[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor

2010-09-28 Thread Hernando Torque
I forgot, you also need to disable this option for the user ('sudo -u
gdm' will only deal with the gdm login screen):

gconftool-2 --type bool -s
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/xrandr/turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup
false

I guess the easiest way to find out if you are affected by this bug is,
to install the x11-xserver-utils package and run 'xrandr -q' - normally
this should list a proper mode - it doesn't in my case. You can also run
'sudo get-edid' from the read-edid package - if it fails, you'll likely
hit this bug.

[Bug 410288] Re: Nautilus does not handle FTP timeouts well

2010-09-28 Thread Coalwater
I have the same problem but it's easy to just restart the connection from
nautilus and then save the file again from gedit and every thing would be fine,
i agree that it's annoying but i never got the 0byte file problem, i just
refresh from nautilus twice then the connection is back up.
And i don't think its a hard problem to fix either, just sending a 'NOOP'
signal to the ftp server and let the user choose how often it would be sent
shouldn't be that hard. ( that's just what i think, might be wrong though )
I add my vote for to the people who want this feature to be added.

[Bug 195483] RE: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change

2010-09-28 Thread FiloSottile
Ok, now these opinions about differences between results or different testing
tools are silmply useless.
Here we are searching for the cause of the bug and for the best solution to it.
The cause was a buggy/misused gstramer plugin lame. Now developers rolled out
lamemp3enc, a better interface to the same library. All we need is that the
sound-juicer Gstreamer pipeline is changed to use it.
So, which are the best default options? I don't know. But surely the optimal
pipeline is the one i proposed above, taken from Maverick. (See gst-inspect
lamemp3enc or my precedent message for reference)
There are no other questions. Let's speak about this one.

[Bug 649676] [NEW] gnome-appearance-properties - multiple wallpaper preview with incorrect arrow icon

2010-09-28 Thread JGJones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Low priority:

Go to Appearances in Control Center.

Go to Background.

Select a multiple wallpaper - ie the Spaces one.

You get an arrow underneath it to preview the images in the collection.
Click on this to go to the next image. You get a 2nd arrow (a back
arrow) - however both arrow are pointing in same direction when the new
arrow should be pointing in the opposite direction. Have attached image

[Bug 643446] Re: Evolution does not show subfolders of IMAP account

2010-09-28 Thread tamalet

the subfolders of an IMAP mail account.
+ In Maverick Meerkat beta, evolution does not show the subfolders of an IMAP

[Bug 643399] [NEW] screensaver and screen locking not activating if keyring dialogue is open

2010-09-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug:

Binary package hint: xscreensaver

If password input dialogue, such as gnome keyring prompt or gksu is open, then
screensaver will not automatically start if desktop is left idle for the
pre-configured amount of time. This makes security of automatic screen locking
inefficient in certain cases. Upon password entry or dialog cancellation,
screensaver starts.
How to reproduce:
1) Configure xscreensaver with a delay of 1 minute
2) open an application asking for keyring passphrase entry or gksu dialog
3) Wait for one minute, screensaver does not kick in
4) Enter passphrase/password or cancel dialog, screensaver starts.

[Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager

2010-09-28 Thread Karl Lattimer
Computerjy could you run a valgrind for me?

valgrind --leak-check=full gnome-power-manager ./outfile.valgrind 21

should do it, with the output redirected to outfile.valgrind. Run it for
a long enough period so you believe you're experiencing a leak then hit
ctrl+c which will end the logging session. You'll need to kill gnome-
power-manager before you do this.

Now once you do that, I'll interpret the logs best i can and see if
there's an actual leak left behind. My testing ran for a good few hours
on my laptop and came up with dbusmenu about 3 separate times, that
hashtable is definitely fixed now as I found in my most recent
valgrinding.

All that seemed to be left were some references to Xorg and Xlib which
are probably just false positives.

[Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager

2010-09-28 Thread Simon B
Ok, I must apologize. I still have the memory leak.I was running
the wrong gnome-power-manager. A little while ago I accidentally
installed g-p-m from the upstream release into /usr/local/bin. This was
overriding the standard Ubuntu g-p-m in /usr/bin.

In summary, the problem is not fixed. The leak is still just as bad as
it was.

[Bug 649738] [NEW] Rhythmbox stars (ratings) not updated properly when scrolling up in the playlist

2010-09-28 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Hi !

This bug occurs in Maverick and didn't exist in Lucid.

When displaying a ratings column in the playlist and scrolling up in a
playlist (not down) the stars are not displayed properly as you can see
in the provided screenshot. (either invisible or partly drawn)

How to reproduce ?
1) in the options, tick the ratings column
2) in a playlist (big enough so that you can scroll into it) rate a few tracks,
rather at the top of the playlist
3) scroll from the bottom to the point where the rated tracks are, preferably
with the elevator (because when the mouse is hovering over the playlist lines,
it forces a redraw of those lines)
4) notice that the stars are incorrectly / not drawn

Cheers !

[Bug 646798] Re: eog window size exceeds screen height

2010-09-28 Thread Mahendra Tallur
See below a screenshot of what occurs when compiz is enabled in Maverick
beta : the eog window is oversized, thus one cannot see the bottom of
the picture nor its status bar. It happens with all pictures that do not
fit the screen and have to be resized by eog.

Should I file a bug against Compiz also ? I don't know if Compiz or eog
is the culprit... I reported it upstream (eog) but no one seems aware of
this bug.

[Bug 647182] Re: spontaneous reboot on logging in xubuntu maverick

2010-09-28 Thread impert
Two dist-upgrades later, and I have added a new user, and userdel-ed and
useradd-ed my (normal) user. Still getting the spontaneous reboots - so
I think that eliminates the config files in user space, doesn't it?

No doubt it's my stupidity, but for the life of me I can't get that
apport-collect interface to work, so I'm attaching the output of apport-
cli -f -p gdm after the dist-upgrades.

[Bug 195483] Re: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change

2010-09-28 Thread Bruce R
Long ago, when my hearing was a lot keener, Xing encoding in AudioCatalyst
markedly improved upon Frauhofer encoding in AudioGrabber and was faster, so
using a new implementation of what was a non-free product in Sound Juicer may
provide a better result.
I am puzzled at Ubuntu's discarding it after Maverick Alpha2 and assume that it
will be re-instated or simply discarded for the 10-Oct-2010 release. Meanwhile,
despite refutation that has included false accusations of results remaining
128K CBR rather than 32-320K VBR, the settings used by me have simply worked
well, whilst Maverick Alpha2 settings are fine but a little strident to my old
ears. When someone 'comes clean' about Maverick intentions, I will try out
some subjective comparison tests on younger, keener hearing ears.

It would be nice to think that there are no other questions, but I'm not
yet convinced that it's actually broken, only mis-used, although that
doesn't fit well with Canonical policy 'to fix what ain't broke'.

[Bug 356702] Re: Tooltips stick when switching desktops (Compiz)

2010-09-28 Thread Paul Smith
Re: Sam Spilsbury:

This absolutely is a bug. Regardless of whether tooltips are marked
sticky or not, they are obviously supposed to be transient. This bug
says that in some fairly common circumstances, the tooltip shows up for
the workspace switcher and then it NEVER GOES AWAY (unless you switch to
another workspace again).

I've never seen a tooltip that didn't go away after a short time, and
any such tooltip is obviously buggy.

I don't know where the problem lies exactly: maybe an event is missed,
maybe something else, but this is unquestionably a bug.

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-09-28 Thread S. Christian Collins
One more thing to try, just to weed out variables:

1) Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

2) Find the following line:
bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = panel_bg.png
and change it to:
# bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = panel_bg.png

This will disable the background image on the panel. Post back here
with results.

[Bug 356702] Re: Tooltips stick when switching desktops (Compiz)

2010-09-28 Thread Renzo Bagnati
There is already an explanation of the bug and a patch to solve it (comment
#52).
There are also packages for lucid on a PPA (comment #59) which work well for me
and for others.
I'm using these packages since months and did not find particular problems.
However it seem that upstream developers do not like the patch...

[Bug 649816] Re: Deleting Many Files Rapidly Crashes Nautilus

2010-09-28 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-09-28 Thread S. Christian Collins
Okay, I can confirm that this bug is NOT caused by the panel background
image. A few reboots after disabling the Ambiance theme's panel
background, I got the corruption again.

Now, I have yet to get the corruption using Lucid's version of the Dust
theme, even though it also uses the Murrine engine. So, here are three
configs on my laptop and their results:

1) Lucid with Ambiance theme: corruption
2) Karmic with Dust theme: corruption
3) Lucid with Dust theme: no corruption (after a few days of use w/ frequent
rebooting... I will keep testing)

Both Ambiance and Dust use the Murrine theme engine. If the Lucid
version of the Dust theme can be verified to not have the corruption
glitch, then we might be able to get some clues as to what exactly in
the Murrine engine is causing this glitch.
