[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor
Just confirming, for me the bug manifests differently: I have a 1280x1024 external monitor, and X starts in that mode (with a little help in xorg.conf). However, g-s-d tries to be too clever and switches it to 1024x768, presumably because xrandr thinks that this is the highest common resolution with my internal monitor (1280x800). So I now get two unnecessary modeswitches during boot (my desktop session of course switches it back to 1280x1024). So this is indeed a regression. -- Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640807 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 585209] Re: .odt and .ods open with fileroller instead of openoffice
This is affecting me too. I cannot create a new user on the target system, as I do not have the correct permissions (and in any event it doesn't have a GUI). This did not occur under Ubuntu 9.10, and has only started happening since I upgraded (I did *not* do a fresh install) to Ubuntu 10.04. When I select properties for the file, then Open With, I see that Open Office is the only application selected. However, when I double-click on the file to open it, I get the message There is no application installed for OpenDocument Text files. If I then select Open Office manually, it opens a blank document. If I copy the file locally, then I can open it and edit it. I can open other files via SFTP (e.g. text files), so the blank document part might be an open office problem. However, I'm unsure why it does not think there is any application that is able to open .odt documents. Running gnome-open from the command line gives me this: # gnome-open sftp://u...@host/path/to/doc.odt Error showing url: No application is registered as handling this file Is there anything else I can provide you with that might help? -- .odt and .ods open with fileroller instead of openoffice https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585209 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor
We can't set turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup to True again. We already had that, and it causes external monitors to get powered off. This means that you can't use a docked laptop with an external monitor any more, since we don't have any cleverness to detect whether the lid is closed at startup and the internal screen should be powered off (this is because of too many buggy BIOSes, not because we couldn't implement it). So it seems that both settings cause problems. Can't we just entirely disable this xrandr messing by default? On normal single-screen settings, KMS and X should already care about the resolution, and any mode change that we introduce will not only be prone to misconfigure your screens, but also introduce major startup latencies and thus slow down boot. ** Summary changed: - Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor + automatic xrandr module misconfigures monitors ** Changed in: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu Maverick) Assignee: (unassigned) = Canonical Desktop Team (canonical-desktop-team) -- automatic xrandr module misconfigures monitors https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640807 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 640807] Re: automatic xrandr module misconfigures monitors
Bumping to high, since this breaks a lot of people's monitor settings. The upstream change was introduced after feature freeze, so it appeared quite late. Seb and I discussed this in #ubuntu-desktop. We will add a gconf key to enable the automatic xrandr configuration (if there are no configuration files), and set that to false in Ubuntu. That patch will be acceptable for upstream, and it's a very safe solution, in the sense that it is easy to test, relatively unintrusive, and will change back behaviour to what we had in all earlier releases and Maverick Beta. OK, thats what I thought, I was just confused because I do not have a Files entry in my Places folder. These are the things you can please check: In your homefolder in the file .gtk-bookmarks is a list of the entries of the Places folder. [Bug 427629] Re: When i remove the AC power cable from my laptop, the computer goes to sleep.
Mr T, I feel with you. Got exacly the same issue on hp 2133 (mini- note). That's a REALLY ugly bug. Hope we'll be able to fix it soon. I made an interresting observation as to what could be the reason why the laptop goes to standby every time: When I turn it on again after the unwanted suspend, I see a message battery: 94% - 4 minutes left - which is of course wrong. It should read 3hrs left. But somehow upower, gnome-power-manager and gnome-power-statistics get confused and give wrong info. Funny enough, windows (vista) seems to be confused as well somehow. If i boot vista, it shows me an almost empty battery bar, while the tooltip says 95% charged. ... Most confusing! Attached find the output of gnome-power-manager --verbose of one cycle: plug out power chord with battery fully charged, wait for suspend, plug in, resume. Note that even though the log talks about hibernating, the laptop never hibernated ... just suspended (twice! ... once right, then once again half-heartedly - without locking the gnome-session ... don't ask why ... its UGLY) ** Attachment added: gpm-debug.txt https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/427629/+attachment/1672871/+files/gpm-debug.txt -- When i remove the AC power cable from my laptop, the computer goes to sleep. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/427629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

(probably, might be a coincidence) 2) Possible fixes are killing and restarting gnome-settings-daemon or disabling the Separate layout for each window option in keyboard preferences window. 3) The second fix, however didn't work for most people, though it might really reduce the probability of the bug appearing. 4) The bug happens both on upgrade installs and clean installs of Ubuntu, confirmed with RC and Alpha 3. 5) The bug is specific to Ubuntu, not existing in Arch Linux and AgiliaLinux. 6) There are users who experience this problem with Russian, Slovakian, Macedonian, Hebrew, Georgian layots. Having such a problem in final release will make keyboard use very problematic for users from these countries, so Ubuntu can lose many users. 7) The bug is still not fixed in GNOME 2.32, which again proves that it's an Ubuntu-specific issue. 8) For some users, the bug disappears after 2 to 15 minutes of use. 9) Confirmed for almost any key set for switching layouts (Shift+Alt, Shift+Ctrl, CapsLock, Alt, Ctrl) 10) Confirmed for both Latin and non-Latin layouts. 11) Permanent fix is to disable g-s-d keyboard plugin in gconf, not fully confirmed though. 12) Confirmed as a g-s-d issue, both with and without indicators. == Debug == APPORT DATA here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/633167 and here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-application/+bug/633346 MORE LOGS: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-evdev/+bug/636619 GDB DATA: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/629444 XSESSIONERRORS: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/630712 RANDOM LOGS: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-config/+bug/64082 XEV OUTPUT: infinite loop of PropertyNotify event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x601, atom 0x174 (XKLAVIER_STATE), time 11886812, state PropertyNewValue [NEW] GSD output: (gnome-settings-daemon:2057): libappindicator-CRITICAL **: app_indicator_set_label: assertion `IS_APP_INDICATOR (self)' failed P.S. This bug was fixed in the package gnome-settings-daemon - 2.32.0-0ubuntu2 --- gnome-settings-daemon (2.32.0-0ubuntu2) maverick; urgency=low * Add 09_gconfify_default_xrandr.patch: In a lot of situations it is undesirable to have g-s-d change the XRandR settings, because it overrides X.org customizations, leads to unnecessary mode switches, or increases boot time. Add a gconf key use_xorg_monitor_settings to disable apply_default_boot_configuration(), in which case the XRandR configuration will not be touched unless there is a global or per-user configuration file. * debian/gnome-settings-daemon.gconf-defaults: Set use_xorg_monitor_settings to true. This disables g-s-d's rather new default XRandR configuration and reverts back to what we had up to Maverick beta. This avoids a lot of monitor misconfigurations. Yeah as K-9 said I kinda have enough useful info here, the problem is figuring out the trigger state. I have a few ideas as to what's happening and one way that I think might fix it. Effectively the problem is when the XklState changes in a certain way, the state change causes a couple of annoyances anyway but without listening to the event it's impossible to change when the keyboard signal arrives :/ -- Keyboard layout automatically changes + 100% CPU usage [updated] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625793 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

@Karl, maybe it helps (or, in contrary, confuses more)) - I succeeded to trigger it with 'Separate layout for each window' disabled 3 times - and all 3 times it was a moment of high memory and disk usage(active swapping actually). Three times with same conditions is a reason to think it wasn't an occasion. -- Keyboard layout automatically changes + 100% CPU usage [updated] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625793 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
