I can confirm the same, I have the same problem using maverick, and I'm
almost sure the issue started when vnc got upgraded.

[Bug 678061] [NEW] evince-thumbnailer hangs permanently on dvi files

2010-11-21 Thread Fredrik Öhrström
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When opening a directory that contains dvi files, the evince-thumbnailer uses
100% cpu
but never completes when it tries to thumbnail a dvi file. This also blocks any
further
thumbnailing of any other kind.

The dmesg log says:

[ 4782.417998] type=1400 audit(1290278467.228:600713): apparmor=DENIED
operation=open parent=25004 profile=/usr/bin/evince-thumbnailer
name=/etc/texmf/ pid=25017 comm=evince-thumbnai requested_mask=r
denied_mask=r fsuid=1000 ouid=0

repeated ad infinitum.

Perhaps metafont is not allowed to write/read the generated fonts?

[Bug 678068] [NEW] When Rhythmbox is playing, computer becomes completely unresponsive.

2010-11-21 Thread Tristan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Within a few seconds of starting to actually play back a file (tested
with both .aac and .mp3), my whole computer becomes totally
unresponsive.

Running top in a terminal shows no unusual CPU usage.

The interface is so slow that clicking pause will do nothing
immediately, but as soon as the machine registers this click (could be
minutes), the computer comes back to life and as soon as this happens,
all applications come back - many of which are now reporting that they
have frozen/should they be closed etc.

I have actually had this problem since Lucid, and now on Maverick.

Thanks for your help.

[Bug 539477] Re: Video out hot key sends super + p + return on many upcoming Dell HP systems

2010-11-21 Thread Sakumatti Luukkonen
Just a heads up,

I use Xmonad as the Gnome window manager and this patch somewhat broke
Xmonad for me. Xmonad, by default, uses a combination of Mod+p (what
Mod is is configurable, in my case I've set it to the Super_L) to open
the Gnome run dialog. So after getting the latest updates, pressing
Super+p just flashes the screen briefly and does not open the Gnome
run application dialog, as it did before. I assume that this is the new
assumed behavior, related to video modes.

This machine is _not_ a Dell or a HP laptop. It's a self-built desktop
with Asus P5Q, Intel Q9550, Nvidia GTX 260 using the Nvidia proprietary
drivers.

So is there any way to disable this new behavior, or is it really hard-
coded to gnome-settings-daemon? I can live with having to use a
different key combination to start programs, but would really like to
use Super+p in the future too, as my fingers are somewhat used to that
particular combination.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Version: 2.32.0-0ubuntu1

Something that's been really annoying me since switching from xterm to
gnome-terminal is the fact than when you select some text in the
terminal it only gets copied to some internal buffer and not the system-
wide clipboard. So I looked in the preferences to try and enable this,
but there doesn't seem to be any such option :-(. Please could one be
added?

(I guess this should be marked as wishlist, but I can't see an option
for that on this Launchpad form I'm typing in, unless I'm supposed to
type wishlist into the tags field under extra options?)

[Bug 678109] [NEW] Ubuntu 10.10 Lose Wireless Network Connectivity when on battery power.

2010-11-21 Thread RosieG
Public bug reported:

I just did a clean install of 10.10 on an ACER Aspire 5515. It had 10.04 up to
that point, with no issues at all. Now, when I unplug the AC, I lose wireless
network connectivity. The Network Connection status shows that it tries to
connect, and it eventually asks for password. I re-enter p/w but it won't
connect. If I plug the power cord back in, it still won't connect until I
restart the system. If I start up in battery mode, it won't connect at all. I
have the broadcom driver installed, same as with 10.04.
I'm really just at user level, but have installed every version since 9.04 on
the same machine with no issues. Any suggestions on how to correct this, as the
laptop goes with me a lot, and I have to be able to use it on battery and still
have wireless connection.

I also have the same issue on an Asus EEE 901 - requires restart to
restore the wireless network connectivity.

Moved this to bug reports even though question answered as should
probably be fixed.

[Bug 27541] [NEW] Touchpad should block while typing

2010-11-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On Laptops with Touchpads, the touchpad often accidentally generates events when
the keyboard is used. Blocking the touchpad for a couple of ms after each
keypress solves this problem.

This can be extremely easily implemented by calling syndaemon upon login
and adding SHMConfig on to the X11 configuration. I think this is
something that should be done by the installer in the default
configuration as well.

[Bug 27541] Re: Touchpad should block while typing

2010-11-21 Thread Henrique Ferreiro
As stated in comment #20, touchpad blocks correctly, it is only a matter
of the number of seconds the touchpad is blocked.

I think the correct solution is to provide the blocking time as a gconf
setting and still use 0.5s as a reasonable default.

[Bug 45974] Re: Auto-hide in gnome-panel

2010-11-21 Thread sssent
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 58179 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/58179

This bug is still around in Maverick. Adding a Gnome menu applet still
fixes it though.

I think this is not a duplicate of #58179. With context menus I can make
the panel hide again by clicking on it. After using the Alt+F1 menu
(without the applet) the only way to hide the panel again is killing
gnome-panel.

[Bug 23810] Re: Evolution is unusable in 1024x768

2010-11-21 Thread jofarmer
Still a problem on my 1024*768 Panasonic CF-W5.

I managed to use the preference pane somehow, but now when I maximize
the application window, a little space get cut off at the left side (see
attached screenshot), because it seems to align itself to the right. Now
when I try to click something, it tries to align itself to the left
again before registering my click, and in most cases then the click is
not where I wanted it to be.

Evolution is the standart email and pim application, and still this is a
major usability inconvenience, to say the least...

[Bug 678203] [NEW] evolution 2.30 is an out of date version

2010-11-21 Thread maxadamo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution 2.30 in Ubuntu Maverick is outdated.
As Novell suggests Evolution 2.32 is the latest stable and, most important,
Fedora 14 is using Evolution 2.32
You can check it here:
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=205101

We had the same situation with Ubuntu Lucid. At that time I was told
that Evolution 2.30 was buggy, but after 6 months, the same version,
and same identical subrelease that we were talking about, suddenly
became not buggy anymore and it was included in Maverick.

My two cents: if Novell states this is the last stable there is no
reason to use it after 6 months. Furthermore, we have evidence that this
version is being used on another distribution.

Another two cents gift: you've included btrfs in maverick, where the
Volume Manager is in a NO-GO status, (not possibile to assign size to
subvolumes, no patches for the kernel to use df... and so on), you've
implemented LXC which is still in beta status (where a container is able
to switch the machine off, because /proc is not isolated and you can
run: echo b /proc/sysrq-trigger). In other words you've included
software where their status, is stated from their developers and from
the users, as BETA, but you're scared from a software that is being
delivered as STABLE and which is a desktop software, really not
dangerous for the whole system :)

[Bug 678233] [NEW] Nautilus crashes when overwriting files/merging folders

2010-11-21 Thread sblatt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

1) lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.10
Release:10.10

2) apt-cache policy nautilus
nautilus:
  Installed: 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1.1
  Candidate: 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1.1
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1.1 0
500 http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-updates/main amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main amd64 Packages

3) Expected: old file(s) get overwritten by the new ones
4) as soon as the dialogue pops up, asking if I want to merge folder/replace
file, nautilus is crashed - clicking replace does nothing. If I click the x
(close-button) Ubuntu asks me if I want to force-close nautilus (that's what I
normally do in this situation).
This error occurs EVERY TIME!
On askubuntu you can find my detailed description including a video of the bug
and a nautilus-debug-log:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/14290/nautilus-crash-when-merging-overwriting-files

Copied from http://askubuntu.com/questions/14290/nautilus-crash-when-
merging-overwriting-files:

On my Ubuntu 10.10, whenever I want to copy some files/folders over some
other files/folders, or when I try to empty the trash, nautilus crashes!

Example:
I have a folder with some files. Now I want to overwrite this folder with a
folder with the same name, same files, but some additional files, the merge
window comes up, I choose merge and nautilus crashes (does not respond, when I
press the close button I can force close it). Some times it even does the
copying/emptying (trash), but it always crashes!

This happens when copying to the same partition/ntfs
partition/netshares, but not when I make a new folder and copy the
files/folders into that (without overwriting anything). On a netshare,
it's even possible to merge these files afterwards with another
computer!

dmesg/syslog/messages does not show any entry related to that problem.

Does anyone have a solution for this very annoying problem?

EDIT:

dpkg -l nautilus* (see output in pastebin)

EDIT2:
I found out, nautilus already crashes before clicking replace/merge (as soon as
the question appeares. In the video it's not entirely clear, that i click the
cross before the force-close dialog appeares.

[Bug 678265] [NEW] 'do nothing' option for critical battery removed - prevents battery calibration

2010-11-21 Thread notoriousdbp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The option to 'do nothing' when the battery reaches critical level has
been removed. This means I am unable in Ubuntu to run my battery down
to 0% to recalibrate it. This was introduced in version 10.04 which
means I haven't been able to re-calibrate my battery in months and it's

[Bug 677929] Re: users-admin: create new user with dot/period fails

2010-11-21 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
What's the exact behavior of the installer? It doesn't use the same code
at all, so that's purely a coincidence it it suffers from the same
problem.

Don't worry about the importance, though: I'm currently discussing with
an adduser developer, and the fact that I set it to Low doesn't mean it
won't be considered. Though if you say the installer is affected, we may
want to raise priority - but that will be more important when we know
what the fix is, and when backporting will have to be considered.

Personnally, I think chown's behavior regarding the dot is silly, since
':' already serves the same purpose (maybe that's a legacy). Anyway, you
can always quote the username if you want, and users-admin will ensure
chown correctly interprets a username with a dot in it. So I'd rather
fix adduser.

[Bug 144406] Re: some windows do not appear in the window list

2010-11-21 Thread Paul Griffiths
One note of caution: the new option in workarounds is called Java
Taskbar Fix. There is a similarly named option Java Window Fix but
that is different. Be sure that the new option is available and
selected.

I have checked imagej and when I enable Java Taskbar Fix, all windows
remain on the taskbar. All but one go away when a modal dialog is
opened, and when the dialog box is closed, they appear as expected. I
have installed version 1.43I.

I am not familiar with windows contours that AntoineM mentions, but one
solution may be to not build all of compiz. I was not successful in
building compiz from source---although I didn't try too hard. Re-
building just the workarounds shared library is much easier and less
likely to break other parts of compiz.

committed to doing. AFAIC, we had a verbal contract and you are not
holding up your end of it. Too much of this crap happens in Ubuntu

else and let open issues just fester.

[Bug 678245] [NEW] f-spot crashes from integer conversion exception

only occurs with the older photos, so it maybe a particular one.

[Bug 678201] [NEW] nautlius lockup with jpg-named svgs referring to svgs

2010-11-21 Thread Ian Jackson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

To reproduce:

1. Create a directory /home/ceb/Desktop/iwj
2. Put the files from the attached tarball into it
3. Open the directory in Nautilus
4. Double-click on outline3.jpg

Observed behaviour: nautilus locks up; this window and all other file
manager windows become unresponsive. Recovery is possible by running
killall nautilus in a terminal window.

Expected behaviour: the file is opened with image viewer.

Note that outline[23].jpg are actually svgs. I don't know whether that
is related to the problem.

Bugs 305546 and 409409 seem to be related to this one. I doubt that
nautilus itself is actually at fault. Here are the versions of librsvg:

[Bug 463217] Re: gedit crashes when opening wget.info

2010-11-21 Thread Tiago Silva
When you say that gedit think it's a weird encoding that is correct to assume.
From what I recall wget.info isn't a regular file; It's a GNU Info binary
document originally formatted from a texinfo typeset text.
It should be read/interacted with info because it contains special formatting
and hyper-links.

As of the latest releases [citation needed] gedit will not crash, but
will gracefully refuse to open this or any other binary files [0].

[Bug 677929] Re: users-admin: create new user with dot/period fails

2010-11-21 Thread maxadamo
Milan, I don't know if the urgency of this issue is low.
Ubuntu installer is affected as well, and I've read on forums about some novice
user not being able to perform the installation as of this issue.
Anyway, as I wrote in my bug report, perhaps the dot should be removed because
it's used by the chown command: chown user.group file, as an alternative to
the colon.

[Bug 677929] Re: users-admin: create new user with dot/period fails

2010-11-21 Thread maxadamo
Milan, first of all, as I can see the adduser command has a switch
--force-badname that can be used in this case.
But, if you use this option every kind of strange character will be used. In
other words, if you want to use the dot, you need to pass this option only when
dot(s) appear in the username, and not for the rest.

Regarding Ubuntu installer, it's not something that happened to me. I just came
accross this issue on a usenet newsgroup.
A person was telling that the installation was stuck at the point of creating a
user.
After a while he revealed that he was trying to create a user such as dr.john
(god bless the doctors! :-) )
In other words, you can consider fixing this issue as well, because it's almost
the same issue: you need to use --force-badname

Anyway, a man page from BSD says the the dot is there for compatibility with
older version of this command: http://www.manpagez.com/man/8/chown/
Perhaps somebody understood that using a dot within a username it was a very
common need for the users (in facts, for instance, the dot is very common in
the e-mails: name.surn...@domain).
In other words I changed my idea and you're right: you can fix the tool and
allow *only* dots otherwise, do it the other way: allow only _ and -
It's your choice :-)
