[Bug 685783] [NEW] Search folder for Unread mail displays read mail as well after application launch

2010-12-06 Thread Per Lejontand
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I have a search folder that displays unread mail. It is configured to
Include threads NONE. Find items: IF ALL CONDITIONS ARE MET. STATUS IS
NOT READ. And in a few specific folders (some imap, some local).

When I Launch Evo the contents of this folder contains some unread mail,
but also a lot of read mail, some dating back years. I have looked, but
have found no apparent pattern regarding mails included into this view.

Sometimes unread mail show up as the last email in the view and reading
it causes a new one to take its place. I.e. all unread mail is not shown
from start, and reading one will cause another to take its place.

This conditions goes away after some time, some sort of refresh is
required for it to do so (new mail arriving does not fix it). But I seem
to be able to force it correct by searching for something bogus in the
unread mail view and then switch off the search filter again.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a

[Bug 408317] Re: Gimp freezes and makes whole system lagging when opening large file

2010-12-06 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
This is really a GIMP bug because of too big memory usage when working
with 3.9 MiB jpeg file.

I've tested that jpeg file with other image viewing/edidint applications and
didn't noticed such big memory usage, like with GIMP.
Computer has 3Gb of RAM and no swap. I simply open image with 3 different
applications and look how many they use memory with htop. Then I try to zoom in
several times, then zoom out and finally - rotate image to the right (90
angle). Results of my tests:

Eog 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 :
400Mb (13,5% of total memory) after opening, zoom doesn't increase memory
usage, ~800Mb during rotate;

Shotwell viewer 0.7.2-0ubuntu2 :
~40Mb (only ~1% of total memory) after opening, 1Gb (33%) after zoom, rotating
doesn't increase memory usage (if I rotate before zoom, then memory usage
remains ~40Mb !!!);

GIMP 2.6.8-2ubuntu1.1 :
1,3 Gb (42% of total memory) after opening, zoom doesn't increase memory usage,
increased memory usage during rotate and kernel killed GIMP...

So, vietnam isn't right - GIMP uses much more memory for the same image
comparing to other programs. Maybe we need to test with latest GIMP
version 2.6.11 and report a bug to upstream if memory usage is too big?

vietnam wrote on 2010-01-27:
 Gimp, like other programs, load the file like a BMP and need to load every
 single pixels. Gimp need to load 14000 X 8000 pixels... that about an image
 with a size of 924.4 MB.

[Bug 685596] Re: users-admin edit dialogs don't show up

2010-12-06 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Ah, sorry, I didn't know you weren't using GNOME. The gnome-settings-
daemon part is not essential at all: the idea was only to use the PID of
a process that is known to be running - you can use any program name
here.

The polkitd log contains the explanation to your problem:
** (polkitd:1592): DEBUG: subject is in session
/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session2 (local=1 active=0)
Your session is not considered as active. Are you working over VNC or another
remote desktop system? This is the usual cause of this issue, there's a bug
187585 about that.

So the current bug is that users-admin doesn't report correctly when
authentication couldn't be obtained. The rest is a problem elsewhere. It
shouldn't be hard to fix at all, would you try to write a patch? Else
I'll try to do it myself, but I'm not making any promise.

[Bug 27541] Re: Disable Touchpad while typing doesn't work consistently - hardware-specific?

2010-12-06 Thread Claudio Pighin
itismike, i waited till oday to reply to your last comment to have time
to monitor my pc Acer Aspire 8530 and now I can say that you are write:
according to my experience the issue it is not simply a matter of
timing.

As a matter of fact I did the test you propose using few times following
commands:
syndaemon -i 10 -k
syndaemon -i 2 -k
syndaemon -i 1 -k
syndaemon -i 10 -k
and I found that occasionally I had no problems but sometimes, for unknown
reasons, my cursor jumped repositioning itself to the upper-left area of the
textbox (not always exactly in the upper-left corner!).
Now, while I am typing, this behaviour happened few times while my terminal

[Bug 83604] Re: ntpdate 1:4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu2 has a flawed configuration file.

2010-12-06 Thread Colin Watson
Mika's patch is certainly still applicable in Natty. I think I'm going
to go ahead and apply that; it seems common to have an empty
/etc/ntp.conf due to this (I had one myself) and this is an easy
workaround. There's a separate bug 427775 for more general logic
problems with /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate, and a separate bug 583994
for replacing ntpdate altogether.

I'm also going to reopen the system-tools-backends task on this bug, due
to this comment in the original bug report:

  it defaults to the ntp servers defined in /etc/ntp.conf, an empty
file; which makes debconf to *not* create a proper /etc/ntp.conf if one
decided to install ntpd on a whim

(It's actually dpkg, not debconf, but the basic point stands.)

Because of this, system-tools-backends should take care not to create
/etc/ntp.conf as an empty file if it does not already exist.

[Bug 83604] Re: ntpdate 1:4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu2 has a flawed configuration file.

2010-12-06 Thread Colin Watson
Mika, I'm dropping the debian/ntpdate.default part of your patch. It's
correct, and I agree that all other things being equal this
documentation should be brought up to date, but it's going to be very
common to have modified the NTPSERVERS line that immediately follows it
(or to be upgrading a system where somebody else modified that line),
and changing that text would I think result in a lot of dpkg conffile
prompts. I'd rather avoid that when it isn't strictly necessary.

While applying this patch, I'm also going to make ntp.preinst check for
an empty /etc/ntp.conf on fresh installation and remove it, to work
around this system-tools-backends bug.

[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption

2010-12-06 Thread Sebastien Bacher
 If I submitted a patch and it got reviewed and approved prior to
feature freeze then the patch would be committed correct?

If upstream agrees on the way the fix is done yes

 I see the release date for Natty is April 28, 2011, but when would the
feature freeze date be?

the reply to that was in the previous comment

 I also had a question about sponsorship, if I create a branch and then
submit it with a correct debdiff, then someone will review it and thus
sponsor me at that time, automatically?

Either use a debdiff and subscribe the ubuntu-sponsors team or do a
merge request on launchpad

[Bug 685951] [NEW] Group chat window jumps and stretches

2010-12-06 Thread Fibonacci
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Open a group chat from a GTalk account (I haven't tried this with any other
type of accounts) and maximise the group chat window.
Type a long line of text on the text area. The window will soon begin to jump

[Bug 667514] Re: deinterlacing is default

2010-12-06 Thread madbiologist
gst-plugins-good0.10 0.10.26-1 for Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat is available
GStreamer developers PPA at
https://launchpad.net/~gstreamer-developers/+archive/ppa
Just make sure that you select Maverick in the box next to Overview of all
packages published in , then click the adjacent Filter button.

Note that I'm not promising that this will be better. However it is the
kind of change that could lead to better performance.

I still don't really understand why your father wants/needs to run the
latest Ubuntu 10.10 on such an old system? Also, all he has to do to
watch movies of his holidays is select Preferences from Totem's Edit
menu, then select the Display tab and then tick Disable deinterlacing

[Bug 578380] Re: [regression] can't print from evince

2010-12-06 Thread FernanAguero
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 680628 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/680628

Thanks Adrian for the suggestions.

I've followed the steps you recommended on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/419143/comments/95
but I'm posting the results here as it seems like

i) bug 419143 is specific for the spurious '0a' in cairo generated PDF
and I'm not experiencing that particular issue; and

ii) you mention that maybe this bug report is not a duplicate of 680628
...

Anyway, using the same simple 'test.pdf' file that I attached to this
bug report previously, this is what I've found:

 a) Check that using poppler to generate the PostScript then sending the PS
 file directly to the printer bypassing any cups filters works:
 pdftops file.pdf
 lpr -o raw file.ps

The 'test.ps' file produced using pdftops fails to print (as explained
before, the job is sent to the printer, the printer processes the job,
but nothing comes out of the printer)

(attached: test-pdftops.ps)

 b) Then use cairo to convert the PDF to PS. This can be done by opening
 the file in evince and printing to a PS file.
 Print with lpr -o raw.
 If this fails but (a) works it is a cairo bug.

This works.  (attached: test-evince-printtops.ps)

Printing to a .ps file from OpenOffice and then sending the .ps file to the
printer using lpr(1) also works.
(attached: test2.odt, test2-openoffice-printtops.ps)

And printing to a .ps file from acrobat also works (but this was expected,
because printing from acrobat worked in any case).

As reported previously, printing from Gimp directly also failed. But printing
from Gimp to a ps file and then sending the postscript file to the printer
using lpr(1) also works.
(attached: gimptest.gif, gimptest-gimp-printtops.ps)

Seems like it's not a cairo problem but a poppler problem then?

Thanks for the guidance!

[Bug 503577] Re: g-p-m brightness not applied anymore after rebooting

2010-12-06 Thread mikewhatever
Hi Kamus, just tested Maverick on the very same Dell mini 10 using live usb,
and, unfortunately, it's still the same. When booting without the
'acpi_backlight=vendor' option, the brightness keys don't work, the default
brightness is set to 100% and there is no apparent way to change it. Running on
AC and battery doesn't change screen brightness as it should according to the
settings in Gnome Power Manager (read from gconf).
As mentioned earlier, adding 'acpi_backlight=vendor' as a boot option fixes it.
I'd be happy to do more testing if needed.
Regards.

Also, but I'm not sure if it's of any help, I can open all postscript
files with gs(1) or gv(1), even the one generated by pdftops(1) that
fails to print. So apparently, whatever is causing the printer to choke
is not affecting ghostscript.

[Bug 73069] Re: gimp crashed to gtkfilechooser code (name_sort_func)

2010-12-06 Thread Aneesh V
I can reproduce this problem almost 100% while using the geany editor:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a simple c file(I use the main.c given below)
2. Open main.c in geany text editor
3. compile the file repeatedly using the geany-crash script given below
4. While this is going on open the file browser in geany by going to File-Open
5. Select a large number of files to open(around 10) by clicking on one file
and doing Shift+click on another file
6. geany crashes at this moment.

Please do not think that this is happens only in this corner case. My
geany crashes more often than not while a compilation is going on the
set of files opened. Makes it nearly impossible to work with geany
forcing me to switch to other editors.

System information:
- Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
- libgtk2.0-0 : 2.20.1-0ubuntu2
- geany 0.18
- gcc (Ubuntu 4.4.3-4ubuntu5) 4.4.3

main.c:

#include malloc.h
#include string.h
#include stdio.h

int main(void)
{
void *ptr1;
void *ptr2;
unsigned long count = 0;

ptr1 = malloc(10*1024*1024);
ptr2 = malloc(10*1024*1024);
while(1){
//printf(Iteration %ld\n, count++);
memcpy(ptr1, ptr2, 10*1024*1024);
memcpy(ptr2, ptr1, 10*1024*1024);
}

return 0;
}

geany-crash:
^^
#!/bin/bash
for i in {1..1000}
do
echo building $i ...

done

[Bug 685973] [NEW] Selecting 'No image' in 'About me' is not the same as the default, i.e. no image

2010-12-06 Thread leo.sutton

Only a minor problem, but when you select an image, and then select no

get one with a grey background. As I said, only a minor annoyance, but I

[Bug 253167] Re: Rhythmbox sort by Album Artist for guest/compilations

2010-12-06 Thread Piedro Kulman
Does triaged mean there's anyone working on this?

Sry for posing a probably stupid question, but I'm trying to understand
this whole bug/wishlist system ...

Adding to the subject:
It seems important to note that there should be a way of organizing the
filesystem hierarchy exactly the same like by the OP intended also:

Within the options:
Folder hierarchy:
 albumartist/album (not artist/album)

Otherwise the whole issue doesn't make sense consistently!

thx for reading, p.

- Identify users and groups by login instead of UID (LP: #533870, LP: #542183)
is wrong: Bug 533870 is a crash on amd64 too, not a login vs. UID issue.

[Bug 549723] Re: empathy doesn't autoconnect at startup

2010-12-06 Thread mattman85
That is what I've noticed, too, Chris.. With a wired connection, it
works fine, and with wireless, it doesn't. is there a way to increase
the load time of the wireless connection, then, so that
Empathy/Gwibber/Evolution will be able to startup? Alternatively, is
there a way to pause Empathy/Gwibber/Evolution autoconnect so that it
can wait until after the wireless connection is established?

Thanks for taking a look. Unfortunately, I have already uploaded it to

reviewing the queue.

[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption

2010-12-06 Thread Jordan Farrell
All, I have already been speaking with the Telepathy developers, there
is certianly no way the work can be completed by Natty, but I think I
will have a patch by or before 11.10. I am currently gathering details
for my proposal, which will get tweaked and then be drafted into a Spec
for Telepathy. Once that is correct and complete, I will begin to code
the patch according to the Spec. Telepathy developers are taking care of
me; so I will not need a sponsor; as they are my mentors, reviewers, and
sponsors. I will be posting back here with updates about once a month,
all other updates will be made via the mailing-list for Telepathy and/or
#telepathy @ freenode.

[Bug 686037] [NEW] Empathy doesn't work well (since it cannot be resized under a particular size) on netbooks with smaller screens.

2010-12-06 Thread Aviral Dasgupta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Empathy doesn't work well (since it cannot be resized under a particular
size) on netbooks with smaller screens. It is a real pain trying to use
empathy, since it cannot be resized to fit the screen (for me, that's
1024*600 px). It would be nice if this could be done.
