[Bug 689530] [NEW] Can't change icons GTK theme
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon I have reinstalled my laptop because I changed my HDD for a SDD. On first install, on first boot, I wasn't able to change icons or gtk themes. So I thought something went wrong and decided to reinstall. After second install everything seemed right... until I applied all awaiting updates, then the problem came back. The only solution I have found is running # sudo gnome-settings-daemon From terminal after each boot... That is tedious. The weird thing is that has never happened before I changed my hard- drive for a SSD... [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome]
** Description changed: - * - No more comments needed + No more comments needed This should mostly be fixed for Natty and might get backported to earlier releases as well. * Binary package hint: metacity - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens for several releases - Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The result is that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an invisible region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System Preferences Windows dialog (although the default thickness should still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity team). * Blueprint for Natty: https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection-dx-n-resizing-windows Work items 1 * Make sure the new resize grip fits in current applications; doesn't interfere with anything. [Bug 689741] Re: libgtk2.0-0 performance problem due to unused cruft from 10 years ago
Removing a call to a cpu eating yet UNNEEDED function isn't trivial? I don't understand your reasoning. Removing 10 year old UNUSED cruft that results in a significant speedup to Applications with large(r) numbers of widgets, seems like a win, esp since it appears to be unused and unneeded. From My chat logs with Owen taylor on #gtk+ (irc.gnome.org) (10:54:06 AM) owen: profiling it seems to indicate some possible major optimizations - weirdly most of the time seems to be spent on a piece of GTK+ that isn't really used at all - support for widgets shaped with the SHAPE extension (11:01:45 AM) owen: dj1: I don't have a source build of GTK+ 2.0 around, but if you have one or want to create one ,and you remove the call to gtk-widget_reset_shapes() from gtk_widget_set_style_internal() I think that will help a lot (11:02:40 AM) owen: (it was added for some experiemental stuff we did when we were first adding theming to GTK+ in 1998 and has absolutely no point now) (11:17:41 AM) dave: owen: huge improvement for your test program with that fix. i can get up to 32x32 easily, and even up to 48x48 without pegging the cpu, though it renders at a bit over half speed at that size (11:18:16 AM) dave: I'm going to see if ubuntu will accept that as a patch as its bound to improve other areas I suspect. (11:21:08 AM) owen: dj1: filed https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637155 for and https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637156 for the two issues that combine together here to create the problem (11:21:45 AM) dave: owen: the patched GTK+ solves the render issue in my app, thanks for the help! (11:24:18 AM) owen: dj1: thanks for mentioning the problem, and sorry for blaming your app. :-) I knew there was something going weird that wasn't just GTK+ recomputing sizes, but wasn't expecting it to be some left-over code in GTK+ from a decade ago. Even owen admits it was forgotten leftover code. ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #637155 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637155 ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #637156 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637156 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gtk+2.0 in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/689741 Title: libgtk2.0-0 performance problem due to unused cruft from 10 years ago -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 689880] [NEW] Clicking on a link hangs gnome-terminal until the server responds
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal When you click on a link in gnome-terminal, GNOME now contacts the server before opening a browser. While it is waiting for the server to respond, the gnome-terminal UI totally freezes: no input or output is processed, and the window is not repainted. To reproduce: open gnome-terminal and type http://andersk.mit.edu/sleep-15.cgi (which has an intentional 15 second delay on the server side), then Ctrl+click on the link to open it. gnome-terminal hangs for 30 (!) seconds, then opens a browser, which waits for an additional 15 seconds and displays the page. [Bug 124315] Re: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set
First, let me disagree violently with whoever classed this problem as Low priority: it is, as others have already noted above, a real productivity killer, on a system-wide basis, to have to be constantly rearranging already arranged windows every time one opens an app anew (not to mention the monstrous aggravation factor from lack of a major feature that was considered basic in pretty much every other OS on the planet a decade or more ago). Second, since--as best I, a non-techie, can deduce--it seems that the solution is obvious (use WM_WINDOW_ROLE) and, I gather, not difficult of implementation (If all applications did that, implementing this feature would be trivial), whatever is holding up implementation? It seems everybody is sitting around the campfire nodding Yup, right, easy- peasy, then walking away humming a tune and leaving nothing done about it. Can we please get the implementation into the window manager ASAP? Then the world can go to work on the app developers, who will have zero excuse for not implementing proper use of WM_WINDOW_ROLE (and will probably, by and large, be delighted to do so). The world watches and waits . . . . -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/124315 Title: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 689883] [NEW] Evolution not found existing configuration (.evolution) and start as initial installation
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution I use Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 (a single partition and swap ext4) Evolution (2.28.3-0ubuntu) is configured with only a POP client (wanadoo.fr) and smtp Sometimes when I start evolution from the menu Favorites I go to the initial configuration instead of finding my mails (about 200 exist) In this case 1) I leave immediatly the installation 2) I copy the directory. Evolution (cp -pdfr .evolution .evolution.tmp) 3) I restart evolution and this I make a basic installation (the pop account and smtp) 4) I leave before making the connection to the pop (if I lose unread messages at this time on the server) 5) I delete the directory .evolution 6) I copy the directory saved (in 2) (cp -pdfr .evolution.tmp .evolution) 7) I restart evolution (sometimes with duplicate messages replayed on the server) lack that he has to start Evolution normally ?
