[Bug 689530] [NEW] Can't change icons GTK theme

2010-12-13 Thread Lox
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I have reinstalled my laptop because I changed my HDD for a SDD.

On first install, on first boot, I wasn't able to change icons or gtk
themes. So I thought something went wrong and decided to reinstall.

After second install everything seemed right... until I applied all
awaiting updates, then the problem came back.

The only solution I have found is running

# sudo gnome-settings-daemon

From terminal after each boot... That is tedious.

The weird thing is that has never happened before I changed my hard-
drive for a SSD...

[Bug 657357] Re: GTK Printing Dialog: Duplex printing on HP inkjets does not work

2010-12-13 Thread Till Kamppeter
jpka, the SpliX driver from the OpenPrinting web site installs in
parallel to any distribution's SpliX driver. It has a different package
name (openprinting-splix) and all files are at a different place (in
/opt). So you can simply install the package and then your printer
should get a SpliX choice in system-config-printer.

[Bug 689556] [NEW] cannot re-size calculator app

2010-12-13 Thread Michael Cleary
Public bug reported:

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome]

2010-12-13 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

This should mostly be fixed for Natty and might get backported to earlier
releases as well.

  Binary package hint: metacity

  - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens for
several releases
  - Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted by this- The issue appears
to have been significantly aggravated in Lucid by changing the border width
from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in all
applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have open
right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The result is
that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window border, which
usually results in my clicking on the wrong window altogether. The best
fix for this usability bug is to create an invisible region around
each non-maximized window about 4px thick that can be used for resizing
(in addition to the visible border). Or perhaps there should be a border
thickness option on the System Preferences Windows dialog (although
the default thickness should still be increased considerably). Ideally
all windows would also have a resize handle but I realize that these
have to be application controlled (at least that seems to be the
  position of the metacity team).

I've had this problem on another laptop with a core2duo once as well. It also

So it does appear to be an SSD loading issue.
Something gets loaded to quickly and the core i7 makes it happen all the time.

2010-12-13 Thread LeadMan
[cut]
The best fix for this usability bug is to create an invisible region
around each non-maximized window about 4px thick that can be used for
 resizing
I would suggest creating this resizing area only _inside_ this window, 4
pixels close to border.
Or perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System
Preferences Windows dialog (although the default thickness should
 still be increased considerably).
These both are smart ideas.

[Bug 685785] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_free()

Hmmm, it's a shame that the trace doesn't show the value of group_number
in frame #1. If group_number g, then there would be a condition where
free() is called on an uninitialized pointer, which I guess is what is
happening here (layout_name looks fairly uninitialized to me)

[Bug 689616] [NEW] Multimedia keys don't work when an app's volume slider is active

2010-12-13 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

When I click on the volume slider of an app such as Totem or Rhythmbox,
the multimedia keys on my keyboard cease to function until I click
outside the app's volume slider to deactivate it. This doesn't involve
just the keys I've mapped to control the volume but all the multimedia
keys. Also, I have a feeling I've seen this with other active elements
(i.e. not just the application volume sliders), but I can't recall those
specifics right now. I'll add them to this report if I find them.

I'm running up-to-date Lucid (amd64).

I suspect this could be related to Bug #388547, but thought I'd report
this as separate first and let wiser minds decide on whether this is a
duplicate.

[Bug 667514] Re: deinterlacing is default

2010-12-13 Thread madbiologist
The minimal hardware requirements for Ubuntu 10.10 are at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

This is a bit more than the system you have described, so you might want
to consider using Xubuntu, which uses the lighter-weight Xfce desktop
environment instead of the GNOME desktop environment. The hardware
requirements for Xubuntu are also discussed on the page I linked to in
the first paragraph of this comment. You could even use Lubuntu, which
uses the LxDE desktop environment, although this version is not
officially supported yet. I have previously used LxDE on Knoppix 6.01
and found it quite good. I've never used (or even seen) Xfce.

Binary package hint: gnome-panel, nm-applet, etc...

SUMMARY:

After graphical logon notification area gets scrambled. Icons are in
terrible mess. Some of them are overlapping others. Sometimes network
manager icon is missing. Sometimes phantom icons show up. They can be
clones of any other icons in the notification area. Bug affects any
graphics card: ATI, nVidia, Intel...

WORKAROUND 1:

Run 'killall gnome-panel' from the terminal or Gnome's Run dialog. The
panels will automatically respawn correctly.

WORKAROUND 2:

When you get your icons distorted right-click on the affected panel (not
icons) click Properties. In Panel Properties change panel
orientation to Left or Right and back to Top or Bottom. In my
case all icons are displayed properly, but one (nm-applet) is missing.

WORKAROUND 3:

Right click the Gnome panel and remove the offending applets and re-add
them, i.e. Indicator Applet, etc.

But you can reproduce evince crashing for all PDF documents? And when you
start it from the command line, you get no error message at all but it

[Bug 689713] [NEW] gnome power manager app indicator lists cell phone battery status twice

[Bug 689741] [NEW] libgtk2.0-0 performance problem due to unused cruft from 10 years ago

2010-12-13 Thread eXtace
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0

After discussions with Owen Taylor it was found that GTK+ has a
longstanding performance problem in cases where a program has a large
number of GTK+ widgets on a window.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637155
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637156

Removing  gtk_widget_reset_shapes() from the
gtk_widget_set_style_internal() function in gtkwidget.c and
rebuilding.reinstalling GTK+ results in a SIGNIFICANT performance
improvement for applications which use a large number of widgets with
GtkWindows.

Patch attached for gtk+2.0_2.20.0-0ubuntu4, for ubuntu 10.04, however
this bug applies to all GTK+ versions.

Source: gtk+2.0_2.20.0-0ubuntu4

Distro tested on: Ubuntu 10.04, however this bug is present in ALL GTK+
versions

apt-cache policy libgtk2.0-0
libgtk2.0-0:
  Installed: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 2.20.1-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://mirrors.ccs.neu.edu/ubuntu/ lucid-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.20.0-0ubuntu4 0
500 http://mirrors.ccs.neu.edu/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

Without this patch, GTK+ applications with a large number of widgets
with GtkWindows will suffer higher CPU usage, and significantly slower
performance.

[Bug 689771] [NEW] [natty] evolution addressbook migration failure

2010-12-13 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

After upgrading to natty, evolution migrated my ~/.evolution folder to
~/.private and ~/.config.

Unfortunately, my default Personal address book failed to open after the
migration. (See attached screenshot).

Comparing the addressbook definitions in gconf between my broken one and
a pristine one shows the following extra line:

uri=quot;file:///home/mdeslaur/.evolution/addressbook/local/systemquot;

When removed, the addressbook works again. My Evolution directory has
been migrated between releases for a while, the uri link may be from
an outdated version of Evolution.

[Bug 689741] Re: libgtk2.0-0 performance problem due to unused cruft from 10 years ago

2010-12-13 Thread eXtace
Removing a call to a cpu eating yet UNNEEDED function isn't trivial? I don't
understand your reasoning. Removing 10 year old UNUSED cruft that results in a
significant speedup to Applications with large(r) numbers of widgets, seems
like a win, esp since it appears to be unused and unneeded.

From My chat logs with Owen taylor on #gtk+ (irc.gnome.org)

(10:54:06 AM) owen: profiling it seems to indicate some possible major
optimizations - weirdly most of the time seems to be spent on a piece of GTK+
that isn't really used at all - support for widgets shaped with the SHAPE
extension
(11:01:45 AM) owen: dj1: I don't have a source build of GTK+ 2.0 around, but if
you have one or want to create one ,and you remove the call to
gtk-widget_reset_shapes() from gtk_widget_set_style_internal() I think that
will help a lot
(11:02:40 AM) owen: (it was added for some experiemental stuff we did when we
were first adding theming to GTK+ in 1998 and has absolutely no point now)
(11:17:41 AM) dave: owen: huge improvement for your test program with that fix.
i can get up to 32x32 easily, and even up to 48x48 without pegging the cpu,
though it renders at a bit over half speed at that size
(11:18:16 AM) dave: I'm going to see if ubuntu will accept that as a patch as
its bound to improve other areas I suspect.
(11:21:08 AM) owen: dj1: filed
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637155 for and
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637156 for the two issues that
combine together here to create the problem
(11:21:45 AM) dave: owen: the patched GTK+ solves the render issue in my app,
thanks for the help!
(11:24:18 AM) owen: dj1: thanks for mentioning the problem, and sorry for
blaming your app. :-) I knew there was something going weird that wasn't just
GTK+ recomputing sizes, but wasn't expecting it to be some left-over code in
GTK+ from a decade ago.

Even owen admits it was forgotten leftover code.

Natty will be released in 5 months, so it's a bit early IMHO to declare the

[Bug 689880] [NEW] Clicking on a link hangs gnome-terminal until the server responds

2010-12-13 Thread Anders Kaseorg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

When you click on a link in gnome-terminal, GNOME now contacts the
server before opening a browser. While it is waiting for the server to
respond, the gnome-terminal UI totally freezes: no input or output is
processed, and the window is not repainted.

To reproduce: open gnome-terminal and type
http://andersk.mit.edu/sleep-15.cgi (which has an intentional 15 second
delay on the server side), then Ctrl+click on the link to open it.
gnome-terminal hangs for 30 (!) seconds, then opens a browser, which

[Bug 124315] Re: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set

2010-12-13 Thread Eric Walker
First, let me disagree violently with whoever classed this problem as
Low priority: it is, as others have already noted above, a real
productivity killer, on a system-wide basis, to have to be constantly
rearranging already arranged windows every time one opens an app anew
(not to mention the monstrous aggravation factor from lack of a major
feature that was considered basic in pretty much every other OS on the
planet a decade or more ago).

Second, since--as best I, a non-techie, can deduce--it seems that the
solution is obvious (use WM_WINDOW_ROLE) and, I gather, not difficult of
implementation (If all applications did that, implementing this feature
would be trivial), whatever is holding up implementation? It seems
everybody is sitting around the campfire nodding Yup, right, easy-
peasy, then walking away humming a tune and leaving nothing done about
it.

Can we please get the implementation into the window manager ASAP? Then
the world can go to work on the app developers, who will have zero
excuse for not implementing proper use of WM_WINDOW_ROLE (and will
probably, by and large, be delighted to do so).

The world watches and waits . . . .

In this case
1) I leave immediatly the installation
2) I copy the directory. Evolution (cp -pdfr .evolution .evolution.tmp)

4) I leave before making the connection to the pop (if I lose unread messages

5) I delete the directory .evolution
6) I copy the directory saved (in 2) (cp -pdfr .evolution.tmp .evolution)
