Public bug reported:

[Bug 704821] [NEW] launchers don't expand environment variables

2011-01-19 Thread anatoly techtonik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I had quite a bad user experience today. I've tried to create a simple
launcher for Chromium with a command line that included $HOME
environment variable [1] and it was not expanded. To my surprise I've
found the '$HOME' directory instead spelled with the $ inside.

Now I have to use bash -c command $HOME command line, but it is not
consistent with how would you _as a user_ expect the launcher to behave.

As a side note I'd also like to see the flag in launcher properties for
executing program in terminal to control console messages.

[Bug 704689] Re: Evolution crash

2011-01-19 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Known issue: /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test is sometime timeouting (1s isn't
enough).
I would be interested in knowing how much time it takes for you, can you try
going to the ubuntu classic session (after a reboot: cold cache) and run: $
time /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test

thanks!

2011-01-19 Thread Chrescht
I'll try but chances are that I'll not be able to reproduce the crash
since there have been updates in the meantime.

Moreover what I don't really get it why I am seeing a gnome-panel when logging
in with the Ubuntu Desktop Edition session.
The latter should be compiz/unity (no panel).

cheers.

[Bug 704568] Re: RB wont write file

2011-01-19 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 693903] Re: ambiguous icons in toolbar CANCEL vs DELETE

2011-01-19 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
frederik,

Could you please open a separate bug about the cancel button remaining
sensitive?

Also, I think we'd benefit from discussing this issue, at least as far
as the order of buttons go, upstream. Please open a bug on the Gnome
tracker about this, you can get all the information on how to do so
here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so,
please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can
add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status.

Finally, whether the red octogon with a white X is intuitive enough as a
marker for a Cancel operation is pretty cultural and subjective. There
is currently enough historical usage of it (IE4, IE5, Firefox 2, Firefox
3, etc. to only name a few) to support it's current use to mean stop
rather than delete. However, you might also want to discuss this issue
upstream.

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working

2011-01-19 Thread Chris Wilson
Quoting Andrew in comment 34,

Redirecting focus to the actual bug filed here:

There is a file called 'libcanberra-logout-sound.sh' in
/usr/share/gnome/shutdown that is meant to be run on shutdown. The
reason the file is not played is that the piece of code that is meant to
be in gnome-session to run all files in the /usr/share/gnome/shutdown
directory is not there (it was forgot).

Upstream is a patch someone made to fix it and the nautilus developers
suggested some changes to the patch. This bug needs someone to modify
the patch as required.

What's happening with this patch? I've checked the upstream bug report
in Gnome (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=528812) and there
hasn't been any activity since 2009. There was talk of 'cleaning the
patch up', but there hasn't been a resubmission.

[Bug 498974] Re: Backlight behaves erratically when changed from keyboard.

2011-01-19 Thread oliver
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I've set up gnome-power-manager to Dim when Idle and reduce when on
  battery to manage my display.

Sometimes, while i'm in dark conditions(with or without AC) or want to
maximize battery life, I use the keyboard shortcuts (fn-home + fn-end on a T42)
to dim the display to it's minimum. However, mostly while reading stuff and
thus not interacting and letting the 'dim timer' kick in, in stead of trying to
dim the display, it turns quite bright for a second and then dims it again, but
to a higher setting then what it was at. Not only does this blind me, it is
also highly annoying.
This also happens during boot, when I have the setting dimmed and just before
login the power-manager backend kicks in to do it's dim-undim magic.

The first thing gnome-power-manager should do (or it's backend) is try
to determine what the current backlight setting is. I know this is
possible on a IBM T42 as this issue wasn't here 2 release ago.

[Bug 705011] [NEW] package gdm 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: underprosessen installerte post-removal skript returnerte feilstatus 1

2011-01-19 Thread knutkja
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Tried to solve an unpredicted problem after installing Ubuntu 10.10 on
an Acer Aspire One.

The Gnome environment would not launch at startup, so I tried to search
for possible fixes for the problem online. I found someone who have had
a similar problem, and who was advised to reinstall gdm and xserv(?). I
ended up with re-installing lots of things from the terminal, and
finally it worked.

Sorry guys, but I am no techie, so this is the best response I can give
:-)

Thanks!

2011-01-19 Thread Jerry Ablan
Just my $0.02 on this.

When I first start terminal, Shift-Ctrl-C/V do not work, Shift-Insert
does. If I open up keyboard shortcuts and close the dialog (WITHOUT
CHANGING ANYTHING), the shortcuts begin to work.

It's like the initial loading of shortcuts is goofed or skipped until
you go into the keyboard shortcuts dialog.

Thanks!

[Bug 247777] Re: the .gvfs directory in a user's home directory causes rsnapshot to take an incorrect backup

2011-01-19 Thread Neal McBurnett
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 225361 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/225361

It appears that the mitigation, if it ever arrives, for bug #225361 is
not going to help here.

For rsnapshot and other backup tools, the documentation and example
configuration file should note this issue, along with any other common
related issues in fuse or wherever, so that people properly exclude
these tricky paths.

[Bug 705033] [NEW] Brasero hangs at creating checksum for ISO and does not continue

2011-01-19 Thread Linuxexperte
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Hi at the developers,
since this evening I have a very hard problem with brasero. As usual, I had put
in an empty DVD (4.7GB) because I wanted to burn two videos, which I had
downloaded. Brasero opened and I could choose Video-CD. Then I could add the
video-files.
It also checked the sice of the disc and started to burn. When I clicked on the
button burn in my first try, brasero closed without giving any error-message.

At the second try, Brasero opened as usual and I couold choose Video
again. Then I clicked on burn and it started to burn. But when it came
to creating checksum for ISO after the burning, the process didn't
complete although I waited more than half an hour. The process didn't
complete and didn't go further.

I recognised this, because normally, brasero pushes out the CDs
automaticly after having completed the process. But this time, it
didn't. Now I have tried it two times (After the first try, I got all
updates and upgrades via Terminal. And in this upgrade this evening,
there was also a brasero-update. I have let all the updates and upgrades
completely run through and they installed without any problem.

Then I tried again, to burn this CD, but the same issue happened again.

So I thought, I give you a bug-report.

Then I give you the details about my system:

Distribution: LinuxMint 10
architecture x96_64
Desktop: Gnome-Desktop
Brasero-Version: 2.32.0-0ubuntu2.1

LinuxMint is ubuntu-based, so I think the same is true for Ubuntu Lucid
Lynx as well as for Ubuntu-Natty.

I can't give any

[Bug 367372] Re: Gedit uses 100% of the CPU while editing files

2011-01-19 Thread naphelge
I just started experiencing this issue today, for whatever reason.
Updates a couple of days ago, but I use Gedit many times during the
course of a day for html and writing papers/journal and so everything
was working fine after last update.

I have opened and edited files I am experiencing trouble with using both
mousepad and kate and no problem at all. I also tried the gksu
suggestion and gedit works tickity boo that way.

So is there a solution for this problem? Like I said I use Gedit daily,
and some days non-stop, so this bugs is a major PITA and near impossible
to work with.

Any suggestions will be appreciated tried ASAP

BTW... if it matters I am running xubu 10.04

cheers

[Bug 705079] Re: Evolution crashes when opened

2011-01-19 Thread Kamus
