[Bug 718142] [NEW] trying to make something just simple text

2011-02-13 Thread Marvin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

sorry, i can't really help much.
i had pasted my mp's name from her web site out of lazyness. the formatting of
the text was different and it would not change in libreoffice writer to the
rest of my dicument so i first pasted the text into gedit then back to writer
... but it was the same!
so i pasted it into goolglemail, still with writer and gedit open and pasted it
to there. as i tried to set it to plain text i got the error ... in gedit
sorry, even after writing it down it doesn't make sense.

[Bug 713768] Re: login fails; freezes after selecting user from the face browser

2011-02-13 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
It seems that GDM itself is the cause. Whenever it updates the
/var/cache/gdm/$user/dmrc, it adds some useless utf8 marker to the
locale e.g. my locale is fi_FI.UTF-8 which gets mingled into
fi_FI.UTF-8.utf8 and that is what prevents the login from taking place.
Editing that dmrc from vcons to remove the extraneous .utf8 components
fixed the GDM login process for good.

[Bug 121833] Re: LCD backlight turns off when between discrete levels, both from hotkeys and from dim-on-idle.

2011-02-13 Thread Paolo Poli
i still have this problem on my Sony VPCF12M1E , actually i have it on some
linux distributions , fedora ubuntu suse debian (all current releases, havent
tried the others).
About ubuntu i tried both 10.04lts and 10.10.

The situation is that the screen either works at full brightness or doesnt work
at all, because when decreasing it, the screen becomes black.
This is what happens both when i manually decrease the screen brightness from
100% level AND when the power management program decreases brightness due to
user inactivity or because of power manag. profile switching (for example when
you unplug the acadapter)

this's a big problem for laptops, i hope it gets fixed.

thanks, goodbye.

[Bug 718215] [NEW] gedit crash on save as

2011-02-13 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I opened gedit
I started writing a new file
I did File/Save As
I browsed to a folder and wrote a file name
I clicked Save

== CRASH, and all the contents of the file lost.

I know this is difficult to diagnose without more information: I cannot
reproduce it systematically, it just happened once; it usually saves
without issues. Anyay, there mst be some log file where I can find a
crash dump or something, only I don't know where to look for it. Please

[Bug 718248] [NEW] Hibernate fails on Dell Inspiron 8600 with Maverick

2011-02-13 Thread Nat Kuhn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

This is basically the same as bug #298804 Hibernate fails on Dell
Inspiron 8600 with Intrepid, but to submit my apport data it seems to
want me to start a new report.

Just installed 10.10 Maverick on my Dell Inspiron 8600 dual-boot with
Windows XP. Suspend is fine, but it will not hibernate. This is not an
nVidia proprietary driver problem--I have the identical problem when I
roll back to the non-proprietary driver.

When I try to hibernate, it get the same message Marek got:
[*.] pm_op(): pci_pm_thaw + 0x0/0x50 returns -16
[*.] PM: Device :00:00.0 failed to thaw: error -16
except that I get 0x80 where he got 0x50. After a little while the screen
goes to a half-tone gray and the machine powers down. Unlike Marek, when I
restart I get no errors, just a standard boot.

Other than that, I love Maverick! Thanks for any help you can give me.

You probably have this info collected, but:

[Bug 718258] [NEW] Slow burning, cannot expell the medium and 30+ minutes to create a (useless?) checksum

2011-02-13 Thread Uqbar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I've asked brasero to burn a data DVD. 3 GB of data over a 4.4GB DVD-R medium.
It was not able to burn a 16x DVD-R medium with a 8x DVD+/-R/RW (HL-DT-ST
DVDRAM GSA-T20L) but at 2x, while K3B on the same hardware was able to do it
(before i dumped KDE for other problems).
Then, after finishing the burning, it stayed idle for 30+ minutes in
calculating checksum. System load was almost 0.
I cancelled this step and soon after brasero said it was not able to expel the
medium.
Of course K3B is able to do so and also the eject command line tool can, with
the very same system user permissions.
I feel all these are bugs.

[Bug 646377] Re: Brasero crashes on any video project

2011-02-13 Thread Shawn W.
I had crash with Brasero, when attempting to copy a CD, and found the
error message by starting Brasero from a terminal:

GLib-ERROR **: g_variant_new: expected array GVariantBuilder but the
built value has type `(null)'

As suggested, I installed cdrdao with Synaptic (default repositories),
the issue was then resolved.

My system: Ubuntu 10.10, AMD Phenom X4 9750 Quad Core.

[Bug 718370] [NEW] totem loses audio wehn playing .mkv files

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When playing an MKV File the audio drops after a short while. (Testet on Ubuntu

Seeking to a new position or pausing and start again helps.
Sometimes audio starts stuttering again after a short while of mute and then
works as if nothing has happened.

[Bug 409482] Re: Properties not kept after closing Rhythmbox

2011-02-13 Thread Jeroen Meijer
Maybe the following information helps. I had the same problem, but could
relate it back to:

Case 1: files having two ID3V2.4 tags, which, as far as I can tell is
definately non-standard. Closest I came to diagnosing, it seemed
Rythmbox changed the one, but read the other, and so nothing got ever
solved.

Case 2: Another one was a file that had a ID3 tag and and APE tag. In this case
I am sure the APE tag was read, but nothing was written back (there was no
error reported).

My rescue was MP3 Diags, installed from the Download center. It could
fix case 1, but I couldn't make it delete the unwanted APE tag.

Hope this helps.

2011-02-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After upgrading via the upgrade manager, I rebooted and found:

1. the default kernel wouldn't boot, just filled the screen with messages that
I could not read - this was the case for a bug I reported on 10.04
2. the 1st kernel that would boot was the rt one.
3. this got me to the login screen but my password wouldn't work. I repeated it
many times.

I now have no access to my system!

Please help me! I've been a long time supporter and debugger for

[Bug 718435] [NEW] poorly-aligned shading in right-mouse gnome-panel applet menus

2011-02-13 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Menus brought up with the right mouse button have dark and light bands
which do not align properly with the text. This happens also with the
indicator applet (right-click) menus. See the attached screenshot for an
example.

Note that I have the gnome-panel sized to 32 pixels (which results in a
weird-looking lighter band at the bottom of the panel due to a
combination of the background image not being stored with enough
vertical pixels in the theme and not being scaled), but that does not
affect the menu striations - changing gnome-panel to 24 pixels high
gives exactly the same menu effect.

[Bug 643298] Re: newly installed apps dont appear in applications unless unity is restarted

2011-02-13 Thread Brian J. Cohen
I see this bug as being marked as Fix Released. It's possible that
what I'm seeing is just a different bug. Steps to reproduce:

1. Download any .deb package that ordinarily adds a launcher to the
menus. I used the latest Google Chrome package from Google.

2. Install the package with `dpkg -i'.

3. Launcher does not appear in the Unity applications menu. You must
restart Unity (I just logged out, and back in, to X) for it to appear.

Hope this helps. Keep up the good work!

[Bug 12040] Re: GNOME Main Menu panel applet slow to open on first click (NOT compiz related)

2011-02-13 Thread BavarianPH
running maverick, main menu still takes about 7-10 seconds to open after
any boot-up or reboot.

I do not like most Microsoft Windows OSs or apps.

I do like the start-up menu, it's fast and changed or edited like any
other shortcut links, and even on the fly.

Why not use what works best, and is enjoyed by millions of user.
