[Bug 725936] [NEW] Nautilus cannot delete directories when it has no read permissions
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus I tested it in Ubuntu 10.10 and Natty. Correct behaviour in the shell: ~ % mkdir some_folder ~ % chmod a-rwx some_folder ~ % rm -r some_folder rm: descend into write-protected directory `some_folder'? y rm: remove write-protected directory `some_folder'? y ~ % Similar with empty directories owned by root: ~ % sudo mkdir some_folder ~ % sudo chmod go-rwx some_folder ~ % rm -r some_folder rm: descend into write-protected directory `some_folder'? y rm: remove write-protected directory `some_folder'? y ~ % Incorrect behaviour in nautilus: First create an empty directory the same way as above: ~ % sudo mkdir some_folder ~ % sudo chmod go-rwx some_folder or: ~ % mkdir some_folder ~ % chmod a-rwx some_folder Then try to delete the folder. Nautilus states correctly that it cannot be moved to trash (Unable to trash file: Permission denied) and provides immediate deleting. If you choose Delete nautilus gives the unexpected error message The folder some_folder cannot be handled because you do not have permissions to read it. Correct behaviour (pcmanfm, thunar and dolphin do it correctly): Nautilus should not be required to have read access to delete the directory. It should try to delete it anyway because chances are that the directory is empty and that the deletion will success. In the case where the directory is owned by the user permission changing is trivial, but in the case where the directory is owned by root it is not possible to delete the directory with nautilus. I think it should be possible because in the shell (and in other filemanagers) it is possible too and nautilus should handle permissions like any other program does. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/725936 Title: Nautilus cannot delete directories when it has no read permissions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 724324] Re: FFE: Add support to g-p-m for controlling keyboard backlight via upower in natty
Have updated bug description with info for the FFE. Will update again soon once I confirm the patch is correct for Natty. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager - upower 0.9.8 supports controlling keyboard backlights and exposes an - appropriate dbus interface to control them. + The version of upower (0.9.8) in Natty now has support for controlling + keyboard backlights via dbus, and upstream g-p-m git HEAD (soon to be + released 3.0 for GNOME 3) just added support for controlling these, + however the version of g-p-m shipped in Natty (2.32) does not have any + such support. - g-p-m can simply access this to control keyboard backlights in much the - same way as it does for lcd / display backlights. + Keyboard backlight support was previously available via HAL in Hardy but + was then removed when the dehalsification started and no such support + has been available since, and as such adding support to g-p-m in Natty + is (and has been for a while) greatly needed. - Attached is a patch to implement such support - this is against g-p-m in - maverick but should apply pretty cleanly for natty since we are still - using the same version. + I have written a patch against g-p-m 2.32 which provides such support + and is similar to the support recently added to g-p-m 3.0. + + This patch adds a new GpmBacklightKbd object to g-p-m (which is based on + the existing GpmBacklight object which controls the LCD backlight) to + control the UPower KbdBacklight DBus interface and the patch provides + support for: + + * controlling the backlight via the appropriate backlight up / down buttons + * automatically dimming the backlight on idle when the lcd is dimmed + * automatically shutting of the keyboard backlight when the lcd is shut off + * displaying the keyboard brightness level via notify-osd (like we do for lcd backlight level) when changed by the user + + I have tested this patch significantly myself over numerous days with no + issues. After a quick post on the ubuntuforums + (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1694678) at least one other + user has also confirmed this patch as working well and providing a + reasonable improvement over current sub-optimum methods of controlling + the keyboard backlight (such as using pommed, which is only available + for MacBook machines and does not support other laptops with keyboard + backlights such as various Asus models, which the upower + g-p-m method + does). + + I am requesting a FFE to merge the attached patch into g-p-m in Natty to + provide such support. + + A build log for g-p-m 2.32 in Maverick using the attached patch is + available my ppa (amd64 version + https://launchpad.net/~alexmurray/+archive/ppa/+buildjob/2283751/+files + /buildlog_ubuntu-maverick-amd64.gnome-power- + manager_2.32.0-0ubuntu2_BUILDING.txt.gz). + + I am currently installing a natty daily vm to test building of the Natty + version of g-p-m 2.32 with this patch, but due to the almost identical + nature of g-p-m in Natty and Maverick I do not expect any problems. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/724324 Title: FFE: Add support to g-p-m for controlling keyboard backlight via upower in natty -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I can confirm I'm suffering the above described issue ever since I upgraded to 10.10. I can open none of the images in f-spot and thumbnails regeneration also fails. I have attempted to pull f-spot from the team's PPA (https://launchpad.net/~f-spot/+archive/f-spot-ppa). The current version there is 0.8.2. However the behavior does not change with this new version. Perhaps renaming folders to remove the offending non-latin symbols and then manually correcting all records in f-spot's database will get it back to a (kind of) working state. [Bug 726100] [NEW] cannot login after upgrade 10.4 to 10.10
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver I am running amd64, the real time kernel. I tried to report this bug a month ago but couldn't get to the system to make the report. If I try to select the latest generic kernel, I get a cryptdisk error and then the boot loops. For me at least, selecting an application by Right-Click Open With Selecting App from drop-down is not permanent, I don't think it should be. [Bug 593477] Re: Use VP8/WebM as the default video codec/format
In reply to comment #25 This is for VLC's convert wizard. The default preset should be WebM instead of a proprietary format From Wikipedia: In telecommunications, a proprietary protocol is a communications protocol owned by a single organization or individual. WebM is fully controlled by Google, and hence proprietary. The VLC default video codec is H.264, an international standard (ISO/IEC 14496-10 - MPEG-4 Part 10, Advanced Video Coding). That does not fit my definition of proprietary. You can get the specification for free there http://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-H.264 . There are also top-notch open-source implementations, FFmpeg/lavc for decoding, x264 for encoding. I guess you meant patent-encumbered rather than proprietary. The VideoLAN projec operates under EU legislation which does not recognize software patent. If you live somewhere else, please don't make it the VLC media player developer's problem. [Bug 504645] Re: Brasero won't accept FLAC files for audio disc project
I'm having the same problem: Neko Case - Blacklisted - 14 - Untitled.flac could not be opened. Neko Case - Blacklisted - 14 - Untitled.flac is not suitable for audio or video media. And I click OK, and the second song on the mix - also flac - says the same thing. I've read through several threads and installed all of the codecs and libraries mentioned in all of them. No change. I'm on 10.10, fully updated. K3b does the job perfectly. I'm saving the playlist to m3u in rhythmbox, then opening that m3u with k3b, and voila. Still, it should not be an issue, certainly not on a Linux system with open formats.
