[Bug 637405] Re: Evince asks for samba authentication when it doesn't need to.

2011-03-14 Thread Jonas Finnemann Jensen
I don't think this is evince releated...

Also if you, when adding the printer in system-config-printer - Add -
Network printer - Windows Printer via Samba, choose Set authentication
details now instead of Promt user if authentication is required, your
password will be remembered... And if you're login details are wrong it
will offer you the option of saving them...

So it seems that the Promt user if authentication is required never
allows the user to save the login credentials, this is inconsistent and
doesn't really make sense... This is probably a bug in the part of gnome
that manages printer authentication...

[Bug 517310] Re: rhythmbox crashes when changing volume level

2011-03-14 Thread Niccolò Talluri
Hello all, this is happening in 10.10 too, the problem came up with an Asus
Xonar D1 (Oxygen HD chipset), no problem with SBLive 24-bit usb.
However, I found that adding default-fragments = 8 and
default-fragment-size-msec = 5 in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf resolves this issue.
RIght now I'm using Xonar D1 in 5.1 profile and no problems.

[Bug 434242] [NEW] Evince does not respect the printer's default resolution defined in System\Administration\Printing

2011-03-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: evince

1) Ubuntu 9.10 karmic amd64
2) evince version : 2.27.90-0ubuntu8
3) When I open a document with evince and go to File\Print\Image Quality, I
expect evince to have the default value defined in my CUPS configuration
(System\Administration\Printing - Printer Options).
4) If I had set the print resolution to 300 DPI the last time I used Evince, it
will still be 300 DPI in File\Print\Image Quality, and not the default 600 DPI
defined in System\Administration\Printing - Printer Options.

[Bug 734454] Re: nautilus crashes when copy files from a folder to DOK (or MP3 Player)

2011-03-14 Thread Glen Luscombe
Hi Haim,

Thanks for taking the time to post this bug and make Ubuntu better. In
order for the developers to work on this issue, we will need more
information about the crash. How repeatable is the crash? Does it happen
always with some files?

If the crash is repeatable enough, it would be extremely helpful if you
could run a backtrace showing the crash. Please follow the instructions
at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace, and attach the log file to this
bug report.

Re: [Bug 727823] Re: Enable Gnome-Control-Center in Unity, and add System Settings link to the session indicator menu

2011-03-14 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
Ah. The problem with that is that the contents are unpredictable. We
could put it there, we could also put it in the Shortcuts that appear
when you click on the Ubuntu button (and which are for Natty at least
always accessible that way).

The advantage of putting it in the last indicator menu is that it can be
consistent across all the desktop interfaces. Also, the roadmap for the
indicators introduces a device menu, in the top right corner, which
would have the settings in it, so we're triangulating to that
destination here.

We can however do some tests on discoverability and tweak this before
release if there's a problem.

Mark

Re: [Bug 727823] Re: Enable Gnome-Control-Center in Unity, and add System Settings link to the session indicator menu

2011-03-14 Thread Matthew East
On 14 March 2011 10:01, Mark Shuttleworth 727...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote:
Ah. The problem with that is that the contents are unpredictable.

I don't understand what that means. If there is an issue with that
menu, then it would apply to any item put in it, and there has been no
issue adding Applications and Files Folders to it, so why not
Settings as another entry?

The advantage of putting it in the last indicator menu is that it can be
consistent across all the desktop interfaces.

Again, that argument doesn't apply to any other item in the left hand
menu?

 Also, the roadmap for the
indicators introduces a device menu, in the top right corner, which
would have the settings in it, so we're triangulating to that
 destination here.

Ok, it's just that from some of the above comments, it didn't sound
like there was a roadmap for this which was known among at least some
of the developers. It sounded more like this was introduced as a
stop-gap, pending further discussion at some future UDS with a
retrospective update made to the relevant specification to justify the
change.

[Bug 734715] Re: I was taken to this page automatically

2011-03-14 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 23810] Re: Evolution is unusable in 1024x768

2011-03-14 Thread Marvin
Leo I understand your arguments that Ubuntu does not maintain Evolution
but distributes it. However Evolution is the default mail client
(including calendar manager/address book/etc.) of Ubuntu. Since such
kind of application is used a lot it has a higher responsibility for
the user experience. Other applications that carry higher responsibility
are for example the web browser or file manager. I assume these
applications are selected to be the default, because they match the
Ubuntu philosophy. So when there is something in such an application
that is in conflict with that philosophy, then it deserves more
attention.

You could say that fixing this bug is not the responsibility of the
Ubuntu project, but then I think you forgot that Ubuntu is Open Source.
Since Evolution is such an important application within the
distribution, I think the Ubuntu project should collaborate with the
Evolution project. So the person who is assigned to this bug should
communicate with the Evolution developers to solve it. I assume there
has been some communication, but apparently good not enough, otherwise
the bug report would not still be open AFTER MORE THAN FIVE YEARS.

[Bug 734381] Re: Eclipse splash screen shows a resize grip under unity

2011-03-14 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report, it's not an unity bug but an eclipse, gtk
one, ubuntu backported the gtk3 work to show those, there is a gtk api
the application can use to disable the grip but it's not meant to be
required in gtk2 so it's somewhat normal upstream softwares don't use it

Do you use the Ubuntu eclipse version or an upstream build? The ubuntu

[Bug 23810] Re: Evolution is unusable in 1024x768

2011-03-14 Thread Marvin
I also would like to make a suggestion that could serve as a nice fix
until the Evolution developers come up with a solution. This fix would
require only adding a few lines of code:

Go to the piece of code that creates the preferences window. Now add
there code that creates a GtkScrolledWindow and GtkViewport and makes
the GtkViewport the child of the GtkScrolledWindow. Now in the code
there must be a line where a widget is made the child of the preferences
window. Modify this line such that instead of making the window the
parent of the widget, we make the GtkViewport the widget's parent.
Finally you have to make the GtkScrolledWindow the child of the
preferences window.

As a result we will have a preferences window that can be resized to fit
the screen: in the case where the window wouldn't fit before, the user
can now use scrollbars.

Users can remove items from the launcher, whereas they can't remove them

The advantage of putting it in the last indicator menu is that it can be

Again, that argument doesn't apply to any other item in the left hand

All of the things that are going in the launcher are optional. The

[Bug 734655] [NEW] battery power percentage, charging

2011-03-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

(this is likely the GNOME Power Manager package, however launchpad
says it doesnt exist)

1 hovering mouse over battery icon displays nothing (unlike the wireless
icon).

2 clicking on icon does not show percentage only time till full

3 go to Power statistics - device information to make it say device
information at the top, choose laptop battery, and the Details tab
(strange that the text doesnt match). then look for percentage, and
you ask percentage what? well thats what i wondered... it should read
percentage full (rather than just describing it as a percentage),
capacity is better and the one that is called capacity already can
be called usable or if the percentage is inverted, wear.

4 suggest in Help ways of reviving the battery (or at least mention it)
- although this may be removed later by someone who sells batteries - i
have seen this corruption in wikipedia - one pitfall of open source...

I don't think that is a clear distinction at all. Music, mail, chat,
social networking etc are all present in the indicators and these seem
to me to be user space. But putting that aside, it seems to me that
the launcher is intended to be the place where users *start* things
and I still don't see any meaningful reason not to include settings
alongside applications there.

The advantage of putting it in the last indicator menu is that it can be
consistent across all the desktop interfaces.
Again, that argument doesn't apply to any other item in the left hand

All of the things that are going in the launcher are optional. The

That's also true of the settings (which are currently present in the
applications launcher already).

[Bug 637405] Re: Evince asks for samba authentication when it doesn't need to.

2011-03-14 Thread Geoff Goehle
Yes. I see the same behavior from gedit and from anything which uses
the default gnome print dialog. I do not get this behavior from open
office though. (I think its because open office uses a different print
managing method.)

Actually I was able to get around the problem by hardcoding my username
and password into the DeviceURI field in printers.conf. Its not a great
solution since my password is written in plaintext, but it serves as a
workaround.

As I side note, I had some success using AuthInfoRequired none in
printer.conf. This stopped the print dialog from asking for
authorization info, but got reset by CUPS whenever I restart the
computer.

[Bug 734832] [NEW] Improved PostLogin script to for gdm 2.30

2011-03-14 Thread ltsampros
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

GDM for versions 2.30 uses new Xauthority files under /var/run/gdm/...
.

This has the following implication:
a) User connects to his ubuntu machine using ssh -XYC ubuntu-machine
b) User tries to run an X11 command on the remote machine so that X11 is
redirected to his local machine
c) User gets the following error:
[username@ubuntu-remote-machine]~ $ /opt/emacs24/bin/emacsclient -c
Waiting for Emacs...X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.

*ERROR*: Display localhost:10.0 can't be opened

The workaround in order to solve the above was to run the following on
the remote ubuntu machine:

$ XAUTHORITY=... (the value it has in any processes that is under the gdm
process tree).
$ export XAUTHORITY
$ xauth remove localhost:10
$ xauth merge ~/.Xauthority

For more information, please see this

[Bug 734832] Re: Improved PostLogin script to for gdm 2.30

2011-03-14 Thread ltsampros
The proposition is to use a PostLogin/Default script to do

a) either ln -sf the real Xauthority to ~/.Xauthority

b) $ cat /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default
#!/bin/bash

auth=$HOME/.Xauthority
if [ -e $auth ]; then
diff (xauth extract - $DISPLAY) \
(XAUTHORITY=$auth xauth extract - $DISPLAY) /dev/null \
 exit 0
fi
xauth extract - $DISPLAY | XAUTHORITY=$auth xauth merge -

Both of these ideas come from here https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/19649
albeit only a) worked for me.

Lastly this is happening on a clean 10.10 with gdm 2.30.2.

Thanks,
Leonidas

[Bug 95853] Re: Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before sending files to the trash in Nautilus

2011-03-14 Thread GG
Paul: the attached file will patch correctly against nautilus 2.32.2.1

The current schema you are referring to has nothing to do with this bug. The
confirm_trash boolean value will ask user a confirmation before emptying the
trashbin or before deleting files without passing through the trash first.
Bug #95853 is about having a confirmation when you move files to the trash
(mainly because if you hit the delete key on your keyboard without noticing it
you will lose stuff).

My patch adds a new schema variable in apps/nautilus/confirm_movetotrash
and that will let the user decide whether they will have a confirmation
prompt or not.

[Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager

2011-03-14 Thread Michael Terry
I have looked into this and have a fix and an explanation. First,
please be mindful of this bugs many subscribers before following up with
non-technical comments.

The bug appears to be in libappindicator itself. The call to
app_indicator_set_menu leaks the old menu every time a new menu is
passed in. It should instead sink any floating ref on the old menu than
just unconditionally adding a new reference (see [1] for technical
details on what the heck that means).

There's actually two possible ways to fix this. (A) change
libappindicator to sink the ref, which would arguably be an API change.
Or (B) change gnome-power-manager to manually unref the menu after
passing it to libappindicator. I'm going with (A) for now and have
filed a patch against libappindicator [2].

I suspect that even if method (A) is approved and merged for natty,
method (B) is most appropriate for any possible SRUs.

[Bug 734305] [NEW] Using Keyboard to Change Backlight causes gdm to become non-responsive

2011-03-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha3
Running on an Acer 5810TZ, in prior versions 10.10 and 10.04 the adjusting the
display brightness via the hotkeys would lock up the whole system graphically,
although some have reported the system was running underneath, I was unable to
test. Now the brightness keys work correctly, however afterwards the top panel
and applications ignore any mouse / keyboard input, however brightness can
still be adjusted. When adjusting the brightness the indicator does not show
the brightness level (as it does for volume). In versions 10.10 of both
xubuntu and kubuntu the hotkeys did not cause any issues. The problem seems to
be specific to ubuntu specifically something in gnome.

[Bug 727567] [NEW] Evince renders PDF incorrectly

2011-03-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When viewing the vector source PDF included in
http://www.ralfw.de/download/ccddesktops.zip, the PDF has several black
areas which are intender to be coloured and the background layer is
white (compare the PNG files in the linked ZIP with the Evince
screenshot).

The bug presumably originates in a rendering library, as GIMP PDF import
and the GNOME thumbnailer produce the same rendering defects.

Ghostscript (gs -sDEVICE=x11 ccdDesktopVectorImage.pdf) renders the file
correctly.

Only way to get it to play is to Quit and restart Rhythmbox. The
program does not seem to be frozen as the menu (and CTRL-Q) works.
You can also click on the songs but it does not play.

[Bug 724618] [NEW] a specific CD is not automounted on insertion

2011-03-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Today my wife brought me a CDROM which is not mounted automatically when
inserted. On the other hand, executing mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom -t
iso9660 manually works without any problems. The problem happens only
with this CD, all others are automounted without problems. The CD is
burnt, not pressed and is less than one month old. Copying 96 MB of data
from it to the hard disk goes at normal speed. The same problem occurs
on another laptop running fully updated Ubuntu 10.04.

My PC is configured as a dual boot system with Windows XP beside Ubuntu.
Under Windows XP on this computer, the questionable CD is automounted
with no problems. I assume there must be something like a not closed
session or other non-standart feature with this CD. Unfortunately i do
not know how to verify this. I don't dare to explain the manual mount
command to my wife.

2011-03-14 Thread Michael Terry
OK, just discovered that we're not actually feature-compatible with
time-admin. If ntpd isn't installed, time-admin will offer to install
it. indicator-datetime-preferences should do that too. Unsubscribing
ubuntu-release for now.
