My house has standard CAB5 ethernet cables and we connect to a hub to a
router and then via dsl to the internet. these connections are
hardcoded, i do not use dhcp.

the connections to the internet are to two ISP where I (resp. my
customers) have my/their webspace. these are the most prominent isp in
germany 11 and strato.

Bandwidth is between 30 kbit/s and 476 kbit/s depending whether my kids

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 746694] Re: GDM_LANG overrides my locales

2011-04-02 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
The LANG environment variable must have a valid locale name, or else
many i18n things are screwed up.

To users, who have chosen to receive backports updates, a surprising
security update resulted effectively in a (temporary) downgrade with
respect to the language related stuff in the backports gdm package,
since the backports package was suddenly not the latest gdm version.
That's what caused the invalid LANG value.

To clean it up, once you have installed version
2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu5.1+langfixes~lucid1 or
2.30.5-0ubuntu4.1+langfixes~maverick1, following these steps should
suffice:

* Open Language Support
System - Administration - Language Support

* Select the Regional Formats tab

* Change the setting one or more times

* Log out and log in again

I don't know anything about the weather applet, though. Maybe, for the
case you have never set the temperature unit explicitly, there is a
default which is affected by one of the LC_* variables. ;-)

[Bug 548546] Re: Nautilus does not remove usb drive made with USB-Creator after unmounting it.

2011-04-02 Thread viktor
I used usb-creator yesterday to try ubuntu 11.04-beta1 (32bit). After
successful creation of the bootable device I unmounted the volume and even
chose safely remove after.
After I removed the USB stick, Nautilus still displays /dev/loop0 as File 732MB
 (ubuntu-11.04-beta1-i386.iso).

Trying ti mount it then gives this fs driver error:
Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(could this be the IDE device where you in fact use
ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so

Workaround: checking it with gnome-disk-utility 2.30.1-1 returns the
volume as not safe, but makes it disappear at last.

Up-to-date Lucid 64bit here.

To be honest, I don't quite understand the question. By actual GDM, do

[Bug 746694] Re: GDM_LANG overrides my locales

2011-04-02 Thread Simon
GDM in Lucid has a theme and it doesn't allow to change the theme.
That theme it only allows:
1) Change of user.
2) Activate the accessibility options.
3) Reboot/Shutdown.

It doesn't permit change the type of gnome session, the language,...
I refer to the GDM actual: backport or security is indifferent (both has the
same theme and behaviour in this sense).

Can you change the language from GDM? Can you change the GDM theme?
And I don't speak about hacks.

[Bug 746694] Re: GDM_LANG overrides my locales

2011-04-02 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Writing this in my just updated Lucid installation.

As regards theme, I have never changed it. When on the login screen,
after having clicked my name, the bottom pane shows three widgets:
Language, Keyboard layout and Session. If you don't see those, maybe the
theme you are using is broken?

And yes, with gdm 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu5.1+langfixes~lucid1 it's easy
to change the language from the login screen. With gdm
2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu5.1, the widget is there, but trying to change
language from the login screen does not always give the expected result.
That's one of the reasons for the backports.

I don't know how I would change the GDM theme, so I can't tell if there
is an issue in that respect.

Aha, that phenomenon is discussed in bug report
https://launchpad.net/bugs/508552

Maybe you should subscribe to that bug. The temporary issue you
encountered due to the security update and backports ought to be
resolved also for you, right?

As regards the look of the login screen, it seems to be the same as I
have.

[Bug 748271] [NEW] Evince prints matrix / stripes

2011-04-02 Thread magelan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Evince only prints a matrix of any given pdf documents, and I tried
very different ones. You see only stripes and points on the printed

This happens with different printers, HP Lasjer 6L, HP P1005, brother

Ubuntu doesn't use the password on the root user; in general Ubuntu will

[Bug 708382] Re: cannot create custom preferred applications

2011-04-02 Thread mlaverdiere
Now on Natty Beta 1 (freshly updated), the problem appears not only
related to browser/mail apps, but also to multimedia player, since
Banshee is not registered as one available multimedia app. (while it's
now the default music player!), but instead as a personalized
selection... See screenshot 1 attached,

This lead to another problem, as the Totem icon/app. appears as the
application to launch to listen to music in the Ubuntu-Upper-right
menu, instead of Banshee. See screenshot 2 attached in the following
post.

So my take on this is that this report should not be treated as a
wish, but as a bug. There's a problem (lack of coherence, attention,
etc.) somewhere with 1) how default applications registered themselves
in the Gnome/Unity framework; and 2) How the user can change this
selection.

Thanks.

[Bug 576744] Re: Unable to modify brightness when the screen is locked

2011-04-02 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
I'm not what is required to raise the importance of the bug, but this is
much more major usability problem than just low. Given a non technical
user, the screen is just black without any hints on what the user can
do. This is equivalent to the system just plain crashing or freezing. A
more clever user might attempt to write the password blindly, and even
try pressing the caps lock if the first attempt doesn't work, but this
is just unacceptable.

It's even worse in natty, where the brightness goes to zero when
removing the power cable, even if all relevant settings are disabled in
power management GUI.

[Bug 731481] Re: second window does not open CTRL-T

2011-04-02 Thread Joe Areeda
Thanks Bernhard,

I will now concentrate on sftp conections over the Internet.

Please note that occasional dropped packets over the Internet is a fact
of life, not a comment on the quality of connection (unless it gets
bad).

The fact that it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't is what leads me
to believe it's a random event that causes it and the network is the
usual suspect. I'm not sure yet but it just seems most likely.

We can estimate the dropped packet rate with ping. Ping the server and
let it run for oh 20 min then hit cntrl C. You'll get a report like:

204 packets transmitted, 204 received, 0% packet loss, time 203321ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 23.048/25.333/40.702/2.276 ms

Some routers do not pass the ping (ICMP) packets but if it works for you it
will give us an idea of how well it works.

One more thing we can try is the command line sftp. Do you have any
problems connecting and doing an ls command. That is how Nautilus gets
its list of files to display, pretty much. I'm not sure if there's any
difference in error handling.

Joe

2011-04-02 Thread levu
For Opera it worked when i added the following to the .desktop file:

MimeType=...;x-scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;

Something similar would propably solve the problem for the other apps.

However, there should be a possibility to set the default app via
gconf/dconf. If i change it there the change is reverted when opening
gnome-default-application-properties...

[Bug 708382] Re: cannot create custom preferred applications

2011-04-02 Thread mlaverdiere
Indeed, using gconf-editor may allow to set some default app. (but
that's obviously a workaround, since a regular user should be able to
rely on something more straightforward, i.e. a working gnome-default-
applications-properties). But even with gconf-editor, you can't select
a mailer, since there's no specific option (key) available for this...

[Bug 697400] Re: Classic desktop does not work in natty

2011-04-02 Thread Adrian Glaubitz
Hi,

I can confirm this bug. However, it's not always reproducible as the
origin of the problem seems to be a race condition which causes gnome-
panel not to show up. I also experienced the problem in a virtual
machine (kvm host on Debian Squeeze) and that's I also had to use the
non-accelerated 2D desktop.

When installing the current beta of Ubuntu Natty 11.04, the panel would
load fine. However, after installing the updates as of Thursday, the
problem showed up. After installing the updates, rebooting Ubuntu and
logging in, the panel would be gone.

The panel can be brought back by invoking the Run command dialog,
typing xterm or gnome-terminal to start a terminal and then killing
the panel with

killall -9 gnome-panel

and then restarting the panel with

gnome-panel

Since the last software update today, however, the problem seems to be
gone. I have rebooted my virtual machine with Natty several times but
the panel shows up all the time now. So, the bug might be fixed already.

If you want to reproduce the bug, I suggest installing the Ubuntu Natty
beta in a kvm virtual machine, together with all updates available.
There are also other problems with the default skin when using the beta
in a kvm machine: the skin falls back to the ugly GNOME standard theme
without any skins.

[Bug 748401] [NEW] [Feature request] Ability to move tab bar

2011-04-02 Thread Screatch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Please add an ability to move tab bar like it's done in pidgin to either
bottom, left or right side.
I am having lots of tabs ussually and i like having my tab bar on a side.

This had been already discussed in askubuntu but appears that the only
solutions is recompile from sources which doesnt really satisfy me. -

This is really the only feature that keeps me from moving to Empathy.

[Bug 748423] [NEW] drives in tree view appear in seemingly random order with no option to reorder

To reproduce:
Open nautilus, set side pane to Tree

Actual behavior: When side pane is set to Tree drives appear in
apparently random order with no option to change it.

Expected behavior: drives should appear in alphabetical order.

In contrast to this, when drives are opened files in tree view do appear in
alphabetical order.

[Bug 747730] Re: DVD created successfully, but files unusable

2011-04-02 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
I was not thinking as clearly as I might have yesterday.

It has since occurred to me (why not earlier?) that perhaps it would be
useful for you to actually SEE some sample files that were created on
the disk, so that you could actually SEE what was produced, and thereby
determine what is actually WRONG with them. (i.e.: DUH!)

So, I will attempt to attach a representative file from each of the
types of files that I was attempting to back up.

(If I remember this process correctly, after the fact one can only
attach a single file per attempt, so I may have to do this multiple
times... I will not likely add a comment for each one...)

[Bug 745983] Re: Closing a Nautilus window crashes the whole file manager

2011-04-02 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for helping with making Ubuntu better by reporting this as a
paper cut. However, the One Hundred Paper Cuts project is for small
usability issues that are trivial to fix. From your description,
especially the refreshing desktop part, it seems that Nautilus doesn't
wrongly close all windows when you try to close one, but crashes
completely and then restarts.

Therefore this is a regular bug and I am declining this for the One
Hundred Paper Cuts project. I am leaving the Nautilus task open, because
this is a valid bug. Other bug triagers will process this bug further.

** Summary changed:

- Pressing X on a nautilus window, quits all nautilus windows (and refreshes
the desktop)
+ Closing a Nautilus window crashes the whole file manager

[Bug 731481] Re: second window does not open CTRL-T

hmmm

I got a perfect set for similar time from California
--- ftp.rzone.de ping statistics ---

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 169.253/172.042/459.499/7.316 ms

So when the network is this good do you still see the same behavior.
Maybe open one tab but hang on the next.

It sounds like your failure rate is close to 100% with rare ability to
open a second tab to the same place. How about that first tab is it
similar or does it always open OK?

I'm speculating and searching for any idea of what could be causing
this. I have seen it but can't repeat it now. Everything I try works
fine for the last 2 days. Same behavior for me with Maverick 10.10 and
Natty 11.04

[Bug 703743] Re: Selecting a theme fails to change the theme

2011-04-02 Thread Mike Doherty
No, I resolved this with rm -rf ~/.gconf, then reinstating my
customizations. In retrospect, I probably should have checked that
file/directory permissions were appropriate before doing that.
Nevertheless, I consider this a bug for the reason stated above:

if you print to a file? Could you provide a PDF where you are seeing

[Bug 748604] [NEW] Online radio does not work in Rythmbox

2011-04-02 Thread mariox55
Public bug reported:

Online radio doesn't work, Rythmbox says in the title of error Esto parece ser
un archivo de texto (This seems to be a text file)
and No se ha podido iniciar la reproducción (Could not start playback).
When I try to report this bug, the system tells me about some third party
libraries or local, either way, this is the message:

The crashed program seems to use third-party or local libraries:
 /usr/local/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.2800.2
 /usr/local/lib/libgmodule-2.0.so.0.2800.2
 /usr/local/lib/libgio-2.0.so.0.2800.2
 /usr/local/lib/libgthread-2.0.so.0.2800.2
 /usr/local/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0.2800.2
It is highly recommended to check if the problem persists without those first.
Do you want to continue the report process anyway?

So, What should I do?
I saw these same libraries in a previous bug message when I sent a report.
For example, if I remove these libraries from Ubuntu. Can another program or
funcionality be affected?.

My greetings gentlemens.

[Bug 332355] Re: Empathy doesn't alert to new email messages

2011-04-02 Thread Craig Barnes
Sorry, I meant to say Incorporating this feature into Empathy as
opposed to Evolution in the comment above.

Google Talk does indeed have a documented extension to the XMPP
protocol, which allows clients to subscribe to push notifications for
new emails. The fact that these notifications are pushed relieves the
client of the need to poll the server on a set interval and makes them
(theoretically) almost instant.

Support for this feature is surely worth considering, even if it is only
Google Talk that currently offers it. It would be particularly useful
for the many people who choose not to use Evolution to read their mail
but still require notifications.

The feature is documented at:
http://code.google.com/apis/talk/jep_extensions/gmail.html

[Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA

2011-04-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Bryce,

No luck here :-( Still very, very broken in my home setup.

A few pieces of information, though...
 1) GDM seems to work correctly. ie, if I reboot my system with my external
24 Samsung 1920x1080 monitor hooked up, GDM comes up in mirror mode, full
resolution and grandeur. When I log in, though, Classic or Unity, I get
nothing on either monitor. Well, I get the flashing that Andres showed in his
video.
 2) I gave a talk today at Texas Linux Fest, and brought along a 10.04 LiveUSB.
However, when I tested Natty against the monitors the conference provided,
everything worked just fine. So perhaps the problem is monitor specific? My
monitor is a relatively common Samsung SyncMaster 2333 24, that has worked
perfectly from Hardy - Maverick. It's only Natty that's batty.

Dustin
