[Bug 746694] Re: GDM_LANG overrides my locales
The LANG environment variable must have a valid locale name, or else many i18n things are screwed up. To users, who have chosen to receive backports updates, a surprising security update resulted effectively in a (temporary) downgrade with respect to the language related stuff in the backports gdm package, since the backports package was suddenly not the latest gdm version. That's what caused the invalid LANG value. To clean it up, once you have installed version 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu5.1+langfixes~lucid1 or 2.30.5-0ubuntu4.1+langfixes~maverick1, following these steps should suffice: * Open Language Support System - Administration - Language Support * Select the Regional Formats tab * Change the setting one or more times * Log out and log in again I don't know anything about the weather applet, though. [Bug 746694] Re: GDM_LANG overrides my locales
Writing this in my just updated Lucid installation. As regards theme, I have never changed it. When on the login screen, after having clicked my name, the bottom pane shows three widgets: Language, Keyboard layout and Session. If you don't see those, maybe the theme you are using is broken? And yes, with gdm 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu5.1+langfixes~lucid1 it's easy to change the language from the login screen. With gdm 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu5.1, the widget is there, but trying to change language from the login screen does not always give the expected result. That's one of the reasons for the backports. I don't know how I would change the GDM theme, so I can't tell if there is an issue in that respect. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/746694 Title: GDM_LANG overrides my locales -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 708382] Re: cannot create custom preferred applications
Now on Natty Beta 1 (freshly updated), the problem appears not only related to browser/mail apps, but also to multimedia player, since Banshee is not registered as one available multimedia app. (while it's now the default music player!), but instead as a personalized selection... See screenshot 1 attached, This lead to another problem, as the Totem icon/app. appears as the application to launch to listen to music in the Ubuntu-Upper-right menu, instead of Banshee. See screenshot 2 attached in the following post. So my take on this is that this report should not be treated as a wish, but as a bug. There's a problem (lack of coherence, attention, etc.) somewhere with 1) how default applications registered themselves in the Gnome/Unity framework; and 2) How the user can change this selection. [Bug 576744] Re: Unable to modify brightness when the screen is locked
I'm not what is required to raise the importance of the bug, but this is much more major usability problem than just low. Given a non technical user, the screen is just black without any hints on what the user can do. This is equivalent to the system just plain crashing or freezing. A more clever user might attempt to write the password blindly, and even try pressing the caps lock if the first attempt doesn't work, but this is just unacceptable. It's even worse in natty, where the brightness goes to zero when removing the power cable, even if all relevant settings are disabled in power management GUI. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/576744 Title: Unable to modify brightness when the screen is locked -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 731481] Re: second window does not open CTRL-T
Thanks Bernhard, I will now concentrate on sftp conections over the Internet. Please note that occasional dropped packets over the Internet is a fact of life, not a comment on the quality of connection (unless it gets bad). The fact that it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't is what leads me to believe it's a random event that causes it and the network is the usual suspect. I'm not sure yet but it just seems most likely. We can estimate the dropped packet rate with ping. Ping the server and let it run for oh 20 min then hit cntrl C. You'll get a report like: 204 packets transmitted, 204 received, 0% packet loss, time 203321ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 23.048/25.333/40.702/2.276 ms Some routers do not pass the ping (ICMP) packets but if it works for you it will give us an idea of how well it works. One more thing we can try is the command line sftp. Do you have any problems connecting and doing an ls command. That is how Nautilus gets its list of files to display, pretty much. I'm not sure if there's any difference in error handling. [Bug 708382] Re: cannot create custom preferred applications
Indeed, using gconf-editor may allow to set some default app. (but that's obviously a workaround, since a regular user should be able to rely on something more straightforward, i.e. a working gnome-default- applications-properties). [Bug 697400] Re: Classic desktop does not work in natty
Hi, I can confirm this bug. However, it's not always reproducible as the origin of the problem seems to be a race condition which causes gnome- panel not to show up. I also experienced the problem in a virtual machine (kvm host on Debian Squeeze) and that's I also had to use the non-accelerated 2D desktop. When installing the current beta of Ubuntu Natty 11.04, the panel would load fine. However, after installing the updates as of Thursday, the problem showed up. After installing the updates, rebooting Ubuntu and logging in, the panel would be gone. The panel can be brought back by invoking the Run command dialog, typing xterm or gnome-terminal to start a terminal and then killing the panel with killall -9 gnome-panel and then restarting the panel with gnome-panel Since the last software update today, however, the problem seems to be gone. I have rebooted my virtual machine with Natty several times but the panel shows up all the time now. So, the bug might be fixed already. If you want to reproduce the bug, I suggest installing the Ubuntu Natty beta in a kvm virtual machine, together with all updates available. There are also other problems with the default skin when using the beta in a kvm machine: the skin falls back to the ugly GNOME standard theme without any skins. [Bug 745983] Re: Closing a Nautilus window crashes the whole file manager
Thank you for helping with making Ubuntu better by reporting this as a paper cut. However, the One Hundred Paper Cuts project is for small usability issues that are trivial to fix. From your description, especially the refreshing desktop part, it seems that Nautilus doesn't wrongly close all windows when you try to close one, but crashes completely and then restarts. Therefore this is a regular bug and I am declining this for the One Hundred Paper Cuts project. I am leaving the Nautilus task open, because this is a valid bug. Other bug triagers will process this bug further. ** Summary changed: - Pressing X on a nautilus window, quits all nautilus windows (and refreshes the desktop) + Closing a Nautilus window crashes the whole file manager ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Status: New = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/745983 Title: Closing a Nautilus window crashes the whole file manager -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

How about that first tab is it similar or does it always open OK? I'm speculating and searching for any idea of what could be causing this. I have seen it but can't repeat it now. [Bug 732600] Re: File-Roller fails to extract password-protected rar-files
Thank you for your bug report. I'm seeing this bug too. Note that it works for files where only the files are password protected (option -p in rar), the problem is with files where also the information *about* the files is password protected (option -hp). I opened an upstream bug report about this, you can track it and make comments at: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=646562 ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #646562 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=646562 ** Changed in: file-roller (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed ** Also affects: file-roller via https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=646562 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to file-roller in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/732600 Title: File-Roller fails to extract password-protected rar-files -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 332355] Re: Empathy doesn't alert to new email messages
Sorry, I meant to say Incorporating this feature into Empathy as opposed to Evolution in the comment above. Google Talk does indeed have a documented extension to the XMPP protocol, which allows clients to subscribe to push notifications for new emails. The fact that these notifications are pushed relieves the client of the need to poll the server on a set interval and makes them (theoretically) almost instant. Support for this feature is surely worth considering, even if it is only Google Talk that currently offers it. It would be particularly useful for the many people who choose not to use Evolution to read their mail but still require notifications. The feature is documented at: http://code.google.com/apis/talk/jep_extensions/gmail.html -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332355 Title: Empathy doesn't alert to new email messages -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA
Bryce, No luck here :-( Still very, very broken in my home setup. A few pieces of information, though... 1) GDM seems to work correctly. ie, if I reboot my system with my external 24 Samsung 1920x1080 monitor hooked up, GDM comes up in mirror mode, full resolution and grandeur. When I log in, though, Classic or Unity, I get nothing on either monitor. Well, I get the flashing that Andres showed in his video. 2) I gave a talk today at Texas Linux Fest, and brought along a 10.04 LiveUSB. However, when I tested Natty against the monitors the conference provided, everything worked just fine. So perhaps the problem is monitor specific? My monitor is a relatively common Samsung SyncMaster 2333 24, that has worked perfectly from Hardy - Maverick. It's only Natty that's batty.
