[Bug 869736] [NEW] dragging languages in system settings / language support doesn't always work

2011-10-07 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

If I select System Settings and language support, it should be possible
to select one of the installed languages and drag it up and down in the
list (as the dialog directs you to do).

However, this never works for me when I first open the language support
window.

If I switch to other windows or tabs and back again, sometimes dragging
starts to work, but I can't see a repeatable pattern.

In case it's relevant, when I first start language support it says that
some packages are not installed (specifically, the South African English
support for LibreOffice, libreoffice-za, which I don't want because I
don't have English (South African) installed so I tell it to remind me
later).

The problem does seem to be related the initial warning window that you
don't have everything installed. After I installed the South African

[Bug 869765] [NEW] Screen locked on lid close

2011-10-07 Thread Julien Olivier
Public bug reported:

If I suspend my laptop by closing the lid, I get a password prompt when
I open it again. This doesn't occur when I suspend using the gnome-shell
suspend menu entry.

For information, this happens when running a gnome-shell session. I have
disabled lock screen in the screen settings. This used to work
perfectly until very recently (probably after one of my daily oneiric
upgrades).

[Bug 869795] [NEW] Gnome session starts with maximum sound level

2011-10-07 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

On Dell Inspiron 9300, Oneiric beta (all updates as of 2011/10/07) the
Ubuntu Gnome session starts with sound volume to the max, producing a
tremendously loud session opening jingle.

Lowering volume, logging out and rebooting, the problem is back (set
volume isn't remembered).

This doesn't happen in KDE sessions on same machine.

(As a safeguard I would request that no opening sound should ever be
produced with a volume set higher than a reasonable default... Figure a
laptop with good loudspeakers opening with a TREMENDOUSLY LOUD sound in
a meeting room, train, whatever...)

= Same issue also seen on another machine (Compaq Mini)

[Bug 869793] [NEW] Nautilus is very slow when opening folders with many files

2011-10-07 Thread Gorka Navarrete
Public bug reported:

Opening folders with many files takes a long time with Nautilus, to the point
it becomes unusable for folders with more than 5K files.
I've measured the time it takes for folders with different amount of files to
open with Nautilus and Gnome Commander. It is ~6 times faster with GC on
average. In folders with ~20K files, it takes 30s with nautilus versus 6! with
GC.

With Nautilus
~3500 files tales 6 seconds
~7000 files takes 18 seconds
~15000 files takes 22 seconds
~2 files takes 30 seconds

With Gnome Commander
~3500 files tales 1 second
~7000 files takes 1.5 seconds
~15000 files takes 3 seconds
~2 files takes 6 seconds

These are mostly small dicom files (MRI images). I am using a 8 core 3.4Ghz and
16Gigs of RAM with Ubuntu 11.04 64-bits.
Also, of course, things like selecting all files and copying them around is
absurdly slow and makes nautilus unusable... but that would be another bug
report (?).

[Bug 869793] Re: Nautilus is very slow when opening folders with many files

2011-10-07 Thread Gorka Navarrete
With Thunar file manager things are even faster:

~3500 files takes 0.5s
~2 files takes ~2s

This is ~15 times faster than Nautilus... and it makes a huge difference
in usability. Of course, Thunar lacks some of the great features of
Nautilus, but I can't see how things like a double pane should have such
a big impact on speed.

2011-10-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 869341] Re: On Asus eeePC 900 I cannot register my Google account

2011-10-07 Thread Till Kamppeter
Found the cause of the problem:

While installing debug symbols for gnome-control-center I ran

dpkg -p gnome-control-center

and saw that it recommends gnome-online-accounts. Then I checked on all
my three Oneiric boxes whether gnome-online-accounts is installed. On
the machines where I succeeded to register my Google account gnome-
online-accounts is installed on the machine where I did not succeed it
is not installed. So I did

sudo apt-get install gnome-online-accounts

and after completing the installation I could register my Google
account.

So the bug is now the following:

gnome-control-center offers a user interface to register a Google
account, even if the backend to do the actual registration is not
installed.

It should get fixed by one of the following three possibilities:

1. gnome-control-center should depend on gnome-online-accounts and not
only recommend it.

2. gnome-control-center should not show the Online Accounts icon if
gnome-online-accounts is not installed (perhaps one could move this
module completely into the gnome-online-accounts package).

3. gnome-control-center should ask the user to install gnome-online-
accounts when clicking the Online Accounts icon if the package is not
installed yet. If the user accepts installing it, the Online Accounts
UI will be shown so that the user can register his account(s). If he
declines installing it gnome-control-center should return to its main
(icon) screen.

It is really not a good usability to show a UI whose backend is not
present and simply ignore the user's login input without showing any
message. I appreciate a fix very much at least as a zero-day SRU.

[Bug 869341] Re: Online Accounts icon and UI appears in g-c-c when gnome-online-accounts package is not installed, ignoring user's registration input.

2011-10-07 Thread Till Kamppeter
Solution (1) is a tiny patch on debian/control, so it could be even done
as direct upload into Oneiric, incontrary to solution (2) and (3) which
require modifying/writing code and/or moving files between packages. So
I suggest fixing via (1) only in Oneiric and via (2) or (3) in Precise.

still there with oneiric. It's really annoying. But how to proceed?

[Bug 472437] Re: gnome-system-monitor keeps crashing with signal 7 (on a Jaunty booted from USB)

2011-10-07 Thread Dmitri Bachtin
The upstream developers marked this bug report as expired because the
reported GNOME version is not being supported anymore.

The squashfs errors you reported look like errors either in the image
you installed or in the hardware (usb pen or RAM).

Do you still experience the problem?

[Bug 869901] [NEW] Keyboard not enabled at login screen

2011-10-07 Thread Tony Pursell
Public bug reported:

I an using an Asus EEPC 1015PEM running Natty for some months.
Everything was OK until a few days ago. Now the keyboard is not enabled
at the login screen. I can use the touchpad and its mouse keys to
select myself from the list of users, but I cannot type my password.
Only the Esc key seems to be working. Pressing other keys gives
nothing.

The same situation is found with a USB keyboard plugged in and with the
on-screen keyboard enabled.

The physical keyboard is OK. It has been tested at the GRUB boot
screen, in Windows 7, using a live 11.04 on a USB stick (which has a
login screen) and in Recovery Mode, which is being used now to create
this bug report (via netroot su tony strartx terminal ubuntu-bug

Is this set up on purpose to make GNU-Linux in general, and Gnome in

[Bug 864847] [NEW] Desktop visible and dash menu available via super key after lock down via lid closure

2011-10-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug:

After resuming from suspend via lid closure, the full desktop flashes
briefly. Following this, if the super (Windows) key is pressed, the dash
menu appears (but is not clickable), revealing the launcher and allowing
the user to see which programs are running on the system.

This does not occur during regular lockdown (power-lock screen) but
only when the system is suspended and locked via the lid close event.

[Bug 846367] Re: When opening a directory with totem, video files are added to the playlist but some of them won't play

2011-10-07 Thread Marwan Tanager
I just tested that bug against the development version of oneiric (the
7-oct-2011 build) and everything is fine. All the files are loaded into
the playlist and are played normally.

[Bug 864276] Re: hl-5240 is not printing

2011-10-07 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.
