[Bug 882956] Re: [Oneiric] [Dell XPS M1330] Gnome session exits with XI_BadDevice error

2011-11-28 Thread erny
Yesterday I was testing the suspend / wakeup cycle during nearly 2
hours. Currently it is much less frequent and very difficult to
reproduce. I just got one gnome crash at the beginning. I tried to get a
backtrace of gnome-session process crash, but I wasn't able to do it.
This morning I got a wakeup crash again, but I hadn't the debugger
attached. Sorry. (Now I'll try to run it with a debugger attached
whenever I can using a script.)

It has definitely to do with some X input device (uvcvideo, psmouse, usbhid).
Some more notes:
 * I had ThinkFinger package installed until after upgrade to 11.10. I removed
it and the system seems more stable.
 * I used GDK_SYNCHRONIZE=1 to see if it makes a difference, that seems not to
be the case

Regards.
Erny

[Bug 838543] Re: False battery warning +suspend

2011-11-28 Thread Mari
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 852406 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/852406

I do NOT think they are duplicates - or at least, the issue I am having
is not a duplicate. I am not having any issues whatsoever with it
registering a nonexistent battery, or this happening after I come back
from suspend. Firstly, my laptop never goes into suspend mode, and
second this happens to me CONSTANTLY.

It even does this directly after starting up and loading Oneiric, if my
power cord gets unplugged. It doesn't do it every single time, but 9 out
of 10 times that my cord gets pulled from or falls out of the port, my
laptop goes into hibernate (that is my power setting for low battery,
rather than standby) or shuts down completely. I have a dell laptop and
the plug does NOT like to stay in, so my laptop ends up completely
shutting down from this issue at least twice a day, and going into
hibernate around six or eight times as much. Earlier today my power
cord unplugged five times in thirty minutes, two times of which it
immediately shut down. It is ridiculously frustrating.

And yes, I HAVE enabled -proposed, installed all the new updates and
things that enabling it gave me, and no, it has not fixed the issue.
I've been keeping tabs on the other bug report despite the fact that I
do not believe they are duplicates, and I was really hoping that it
would fix the issue, but it seems to have made it both worse and
slightly better simultaneously.

I have a marginally better chance of my laptop not hibernating/shutting
down if I press cancel and get my laptop plugged back in fast enough,
and the first time or two it happens directly after I start up, there is
an even chance of getting no warning or anything. But now a whole new
issue has cropped up, which is that my battery life indicator is futzing
up the percentage or time of battery life I have left. This was not
happening before. So whereas before, it would tell me I had 2:05 and
100% left on my battery when it was unplugged, and I would get the
warning, now it'll tell me I have 6:00 or 0:15 or 10% left. On a fully
charged battery.

Plus, the original problem still exists: if my charger falls out of the
port on my laptop or gets unplugged, even on a full battery, a warning
pops up, tells me my battery is about to die, and then my laptop goes
into hibernate, or worse, shuts down completely. Unless I start my
laptop up unplugged my battery life has essentially been reduced to a
minute or less.

That's a non sequitur. Linux is still as customizable as ever, there's
just one particular program on Linux that you wish to customize that
isn't very customizable: Unity. No matter how elegant and simple they
make Unity, you'll always be able to swap it out for something with a
lot more knobs to tweak. It is impossible for Unity to subtract from
the customizability of Linux.

[Bug 896631] Re: Startup applications (aka gnome-session-properties ) should show icons if possible

2011-11-28 Thread TomasHnyk
Look up for a .desktop file corresponding to the autolaunched command?

If I start empathy on startup, the program would look for empathy.desktop ( on
my system /usr/share/applications/empathy.desktop ), which hopefully specifies
an icon - and indded it does
[Desktop Entry]
blabla
Exec=empathy
Icon=empathy
blabla

I suppose that .desktop file of a command has usually name
command.desktop (as in this case empathy.desktop). This code must
already be in use somewhere, Unity uses desktop files for listing
applications in the dash afaik and so does Nautilus (for suggestions of
recommendedprograms to open a file).

[Bug 896631] Re: Startup applications (aka gnome-session-properties ) should show icons if possible

2011-11-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Interesting suggestion but that would lead to random behaviour
(sometimes it work, sometimes it doesn't), consistency is better than
magic that happens to work only sometimes (random behaviour leads to
confused users).

What we recommend to do is to dnd softwares from the unity dash to the
session dialog, that will add the desktop files will all the infos
including a nice icon and a name

[Bug 896631] Re: Startup applications (aka gnome-session-properties ) should show icons if possible

2011-11-28 Thread TomasHnyk
Interesting suggestion but that would lead to random behaviour
(sometimes it work, sometimes it doesn't), consistency is better than
magic that happens to work only sometimes (random behaviour leads to
confused users).

Please note that I (and probably everyone who added startup applications in the
past and thus with icons) is in this state of incosistency (look at the
screenshot again). Moreover, I do not think it would create much inconsistency:
1) If you add an app that has an icon in unity and so on, if it does not
appear, it should be filed as a bug.
2) If you add an app that does not have an icon but should, well, it is a bug
once more
3) If you add something else (ie. custom script), you are probably experienced
enough to know there is no icon for it. Moreover, there is the generic icon (on
my screenshot, the one next to liferea and Parcellite) for this case, so not
really an inconsistency there.

If you really strive for consistency, remove the icons altogether.

What we recommend to do is to dnd softwares from the unity dash to the session
dialog, that will add the desktop files will all the infos including a nice
icon and a name
Frankly, I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. Dragging from the
launcher to the startup applications dialog does not work if you are talking
about that (nor from the dash).

I am having this too, whenever the Nautilus file manager is open.
Eventually it slows to a grind. Even when not navigating folders and

[Bug 896631] Re: Startup applications (aka gnome-session-properties ) should show icons if possible

2011-11-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
 1) If you add an app that has an icon in unity and so on, if it does
not appear, it should be filed as a bug.

the issue is that the .desktop name should match the command name is
something which is in practice often false and not a documented standard
but an hack, we aim at better quality and avoid hacks nowadays.

Dragging from the launcher to the startup applications dialog does not
work if you are talking about that (nor from the dash).

dragging from the launcher doesn't work but dragging from the dash or
the application lens should work, i.e click on the ubuntu logo in the
launcher to open the dash, type gedit (for example), dnd the gedit
icon to the gnome-session-properties dialog, it should be added with a
proper name or icon. You can do the same from the application lens
without having to type anything in the dash

** Summary changed:

- Startup applications (aka gnome-session-properties ) should show icons if
possible
+ Startup applications (aka gnome-session-properties ) should use the gtk
software selector

[Bug 896631] Re: Startup applications (aka gnome-session-properties ) should use the gtk software selector

2011-11-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Renaming the bug I think one change that would improve the logic is to
use the same selector you get in nautilus when you right click and
select open with, that dialog browses .desktop files and it's usually
what you want.

We should also put some text in the session properties list background
to indicate that you can drag and drop for the unity dash

[Bug 897188] [NEW] Evolution doesn't get new messages from an IMAP server after suspend/resume

2011-11-28 Thread Andreas Haupt
Public bug reported:

Hi,

if you have an open imap session and suspend/resume your notebook,
evolution is unable to fetch new messages (at least if you are doing
NAT). Most probably this is caused by open tcp sessions that aren't
reestablished after resume. Best would be to kill all tcp connections
when suspending and recreating them after a resume.

This is a regression! It still worked in Ubuntu 11.04.

Cheers,
Andreas

[Bug 896631] Re: Startup applications (aka gnome-session-properties ) should use the gtk software selector

2011-11-28 Thread TomasHnyk
Oh, now i get dnd means drag and drop:-).

Anyway, dnd works, must have been my poor mouse skills that it did work
for the first time.

Yeah, some indication that you can dnd from the dash would be nice, I
have no idea that that was possible. Now I have nice icons.

And yes, the selector would be what I want. However, the ability to edit
startup applications by hand should be preserved (i.e. for running thigs

I think so. It is about when you move to the end(left/right/top/bottom)
of the window with the arrow keys. When moving right at the right side
in icon view it used jump to the next row. And in Compact view it worked
similarly in columns.

It is the same bug as bug #876214. I have seen it but maybe I should add
this to that bug?

But I don't think it's a real bug but something that is changed. But it
was better before. It was easier/faster to navigate, now it is similar
to Windows filemanager. I think you are going to miss this function very
much when you got used to it. It meant that you could keep pressing a
arrow key and move through all the files, very intuitive.

What should/can I do to go further with this?

Regards Lars Lyngele

Echoing comment #63, it's annoying installing Ubuntu, a full-featured

much rather not have it at all than to have something that you have to
actually create the templates yourself.

[Bug 897282] [NEW] Wubi installed Ubuntu 10.04 can't use wireless network

2011-11-28 Thread Fayer Michael
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.04.03 LTS was installed recently using Wubi in WinXP home
edition. I used a full partition (26GB) for Ubuntu. Wireless works well
in WinXP on same laptop. So hardware has no problem. But no wireless
network can be found in Ubuntu by network-manager or Wicd. Manually
inputing wireless ESSID and password in network-manager didn't help. I
have tried all commands related to wireless network I can find. The
output are as below. It seems wireless card was disabled. But I couldn't
find way to enable it.

I may have disabled (reenabled later) wireless card in WinXP when
installing Ubuntu. So I reinstalled Ubuntu using Wubi to check if it's
the problem. But this time I kept wireless enable. The problem is still
same in new Ubuntu. So disabling and reenabling in WinXP was not the
problem. It becomes more like a bug.

I have not find hardware switch on laptop and never use it. It should
not be problem since WinXP works well.

Commands outputs:

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2011-11-28 Thread Pako
To all right buttons advocates

Lets say tomorrow Ubuntu officials decide to turn back the buttons to the right
and after tomorrow you realize that Fedora fits better to you, or just
reinstall all of your computers with Windows because your girlfriend said so
and you'll do that with such an easy because you've never pay for Linux, leave
Ubuntu and never back again. So, do you think it's fair especially for
developers to meet your daily needs and wishes because of this?
You know what? I appreciate Clement Lefebvre has done with Linux Mint or Mark
with Ubuntu, he does not PULE for better customization, he build his own OS.

Right is better? Is better my a**!! Prove it scientifically and I'll
unsubscribe the same minute.

[Bug 897282] Re: Wubi installed Ubuntu 10.04 can't use wireless network

2011-11-28 Thread Matt Fischer
Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Can you try this with a 10.04 live CD and see if it finds your wifi?

Also, I am going to move it to the linux project until we know more
about the issue. gnome-nettool is for running tools like ping, whois,
traceroute, etc., it doesn't do any setup or discovery of network
connections or hardware.

2011-11-28 Thread Julien Vion
Still got this bug on Oneiric.

Linux 3.0.0-13 AMD64

Fglrx-updates 2:8.902

I also confirm the strange behavior that mplayer with XV driver works
fine if Totem has not be launched before, and gives black video screen
once Totem has been launched once. Mplayer with alternative video driver
(say, gl2) still works.

[Bug 896777] [NEW] selection of file does not move to next row

2011-11-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I am using gnome3 in ubuntu 11.10 (64 bit)
Assume that
I have a folder open which has so many rows of items listed.
I am at the last item of first row.
Now I press 'right arrow' key.
Ideally this should take me to the first element of the next row.
But this did not happend. Pressing 'right arrow' key does not do anything.

Suggestion: make it take me to first element of next row. and make same
for left arrow key. when i am at first element of second row and i press
left arrow key make it take me to last item of first row.

Thank you.
