[Bug 959106] [NEW] brightness changing problem in ASUS machines
Public bug reported: For all ASUS machines, it will only notify the userspace app by udev event while the brightness value is changed, instead of keyevent. The procedure in the asus-wmi kernel module is as described below 1. receive the keyevent from WMI 2. if the brightness event is not handled by ACPI, then update the brightness value through WMI 3. call backlight_force_update(), it will 1. send a change notification on the actual_brightness file (userspace can monitor it using inotify or related), and 2. send a uevent which can be catched by udev or others (with SOURCE being an env variable containing the source of this change) The problem is that it won't report keyevent, so g-s-d won't show the brightness OSD. But it actually reports the event, uevent. It won't harm to monitor the uevent and read the brightness value from actual_brightness and shows the OSD, even if there is already a keyevent reported. Please consider to add this feature, thanks. The brightness uevent looks like this == KERNEL[16407.000334] change /devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0 (backlight) KERNEL[16407.000555] change /devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0 (backlight) UDEV [16407.000605] change /devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0 (backlight) KERNEL[16407.000730] change /devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0 (backlight) UDEV [16407.000997] change /devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0 (backlight) UDEV [16407.001164] change /devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0 (backlight) KERNEL[16407.002040] change /devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0 (backlight) UDEV [16407.002212] change /devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0 (backlight) == ** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #672380 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672380 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/959106 Title: brightness changing problem in ASUS machines To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/959106/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 959184] [NEW] Option to Lock screen afer screen turns off is ignored
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** Public security bug reported: I have set my Brightness and Lock settings such that it will lock the screen after Screen turns off. Then in my power settings, I have the lid closed action to Do Nothing, which turns the screen off when the lid is closed. In previous versions of Ubuntu (such as 11.04, not sure about 11.10), there was an option to Blank screen instead of Do Nothing, but despite the wording change, they appear to do the same thing (turn the screen off), but with one crucial difference - 12.04 doesn't lock the screen when the lid is closed. It seems to wait for that 30 minute time out I specified in Brightness and Lock, despite the wording in the Lock section claiming that it will lock when the screen turns off. As I've ticked a box to lock my encrypted-home laptop when the screen turns off, and as the screen turns off when I close the lid, I expect the lock to engage. Since it doesn't, I believe this is a security risk. 1) Release : 12.04, clean insall 2) gnome-control-center : 1:3.3.91-0ubuntu4 3) As the screen turns off when the lid is closed, I expect the lock to engage so that I'm prompted for my password when opening the lid again. 4) No lock engages and when I open the lid, instead I'm returned to my unlocked desktop. I've confirmed this bug on two laptops - a Toshiba Portege (R700-185) and a Samsung Chronos 7 (NP700Z5A-S01UK). If it's at all relevant, both laptops were built with encrypted home directories. ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Visibility changed to: Public -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/959184 Title: Option to Lock screen afer screen turns off is ignored To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/959184/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 955124] Re: rhythmbox keeps dropping smb connection to nas device
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: I have a fresh installation of the 12.04 beta running from USB drive (created with usb-creator and the ISO) on an Acer Aspire One netbook, connecting to my home network via wifi. I have a dozen or so albums on a network drive that I previously ripped from CD to FLACs. I can connect to the smb share okay in nautilus and browse them, and I have set rhythmbox to use this location (smb://...) for the music library. I have the scan for new files preference enabled. When I start up rhythmbox it begins scanning the files on the remote drive and adding them to the library. All is well for a short while, then all of a sudden it starts showing an Import Error for every file, and I eventually end up with only a fraction of the music files showing in the library. It appears that for some reason the SMB connection is dropped; when I switched back to Nautilus, the tab that was showing one of the album folders has been closed and the network connection for that share no longer shows in the sidebar. I didn't see the wifi connection drop reconnect, and the connection to another share on the same NAS drive was still showing in Nautilus, so it looks like it was only this particular share that got unmounted rather than something more general. Unfortunately, after reconnecting to the share in nautilus, there's no obvious way to retry importing the missing files (e.g. a Retry option when right-clicking on one of the errors or Missing Files?) so I quit and restart rhythmbox. At which point, exactly the same happens again... If I don't run rhythmbox, it stays connected to the share and I can browse as long as I like in nautilus without any problem. But every time I start rhythmbox the connection dies shortly afterward, during the library scan. I'm not sure whether the actual problem is with rhythmbox itself, or just that the level of load produced by the library scan triggers some problem in the SMB client code. - I had a similar but less severe problem when I originally ripped the CDs - using 12.04 Milestone 1; it usually took a few goes to get right through - each CD, as at some point it would stop with an error having lost the - connection to the share and left a zero-byte file in the folder. After - reconnecting and viewing the folder using Nautilus (to see how far it - had got) I set it going again on the remaining tracks (overwriting the - truncated file) and eventually completed the album. I hadn't observed - the library scan problem with the earlier milestone, then again I - hadn't tried starting over with an empty library in the earlier release - either. + I had a similar but less severe problem when I originally ripped the CDs using 12.04 Milestone 1; it usually took a few goes to get right through each CD, as at some point it would stop with an error having lost the connection to the share and left a zero-byte file in the folder. [Bug 959239] [NEW] _NET_WORKAREA calculation includes regions off-screen causing wrong result
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: metacity _NET_WORKAREA is not calculated correctly for the case of 2 monitors as follows: - leftmost monitor: 1024x786 - rightmost monitor: 1440x900 Leftmost monitor has a strut along the left-side, so is 786 pixels in height The _NET_WORKAREA calculation uses meta_rectangle_get_minimal_spanning_set_for_region to find all regions that are not covered by struts. However it finds such regions within the whole screen - a rectangle of width 1024+1440 = 2464 and height 786+900 = 1686 As a result, meta_rectangle_get_minimal_spanning_set_for_region returns a region below the viewable area of the left-most screen: x=0, y=786, width=1024, height=114 This is outside the viewable screens. The _NET_WORKAREA calculation includes this region, with the consequence that the left-most strut is effectively ignored. ** Affects: metacity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/959239 Title: _NET_WORKAREA calculation includes regions off-screen causing wrong result To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/959239/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
