[Bug 35223] Re: Laptop TFT monitor - brightness level is not saved

2012-05-09 Thread Thomas Majewski
Having the same trouble with 12.04 LTS. I didn't have any issue running
Maverick (10.10). The screen brightness on my Toshiba L-300-D laptop
changes to full brightness with every reboot. In order to resolve an
overheating problem I turn the acpi off at boot using acpi_osi= on the
linux line in grub. When I check
/sys/class/back.ight/acpi_ideo0/brightness it shows 0 which is where I
want it.

[Bug 992367] Re: An error occurred when trying to change the Full Name of my user account.

2012-05-09 Thread cshong
Sorry for the late reply because of busy.

Due to the missing of file /var/log/messages, I edited the file
/etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf. Then, I rebooted my computer. After
reboot, the file /var/log/messages appeared.

Then, I reproduced the problem without using the workaround I stated in
#9.

Attached here with a zip file that consist of the following files:

1. The /var/log/messages file.
2. The /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf_original file, Which is the original
version of /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf before edit.
3. The /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf file, Which is the edited version.

[Bug 997017] [NEW] Empathy not connecting to Gtalk

2012-05-09 Thread Vincent
Public bug reported:

Empathy fails to connect to gtalk on both Google apps accounts and normal gmail
accounts. You also cannot create xmpp account with the Gtalk settings.
In past versions one could double check the settings under the advanced

In Natty my gtalk accounts all functioned if I remembered to open
Empathy after logging on to my laptop.

I also tried to edit /home/vincent/.mission-

there's about a 5-10 second hang, then Rhythmbox skips partway into the
next song and carries on as normal.

2012-05-09 Thread Knurveren
I managed to fix it. Before, I had played the fonts settings with
ubuntu-tweak. After, I have reset it to the default fonts but nothing is
changed. Then, I installed myunity and run it. You will see the fonts
tab and from there, click on the default settings. As result, gnome-

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-09 Thread Joshua Dunamis
I vote for
 [x] Global Menu on
 [x] Global Menu off
[x ] Global Menu only for maximized windows

I think is ok the switch on/off of global-menu (if this is the user's
will) but the third solution is really more ergonomical and a more
intelligent choice.

[Bug 997042] [NEW] LDAP address book intermittently non-functional

2012-05-09 Thread directhex
Public bug reported:

I have a lot of angry users, whose LDAP address book isn't working for
them at all, more than 50% of the time. Restarting Evolution and e-d-s
can sometimes fix the problem.

If a search is done from inside the contacts pane, the occasional
error message is:

This query did not complete successfully.
GDBus.Error:org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.AddressBook.OtherError: LDAP
error 0x20 (No such object)

Either this error is shown, or the search spins forever without
completing.

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-09 Thread Johannes Gowin
As I have asked before: Isn't it possible to put the global menu into the
window decoration/caption bar for non-maximized windows?
So it would always be in the bar above the window. Nice, clean, logical and
consistent.

Otherwise I'm with the
[x] Global Menu only for maximized windows
solution.

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-09 Thread Marcus Moeller
I would also like to see an option like

'Do not hide Global Menu'.

Right now, the global menu and the action buttons are hidden after a
definable time. I would prefer if they would be visible all the time as
e.g. on Mac OS X. Hiding it might lower clutter but sadly it lowers
productivity, too as I have to 'guess' where a menu entry is before I
actually see it.

[Bug 972311] Re: Accessing a MTP device like the Galaxy Nexus fails

2012-05-09 Thread Jan Gutter
Asking again: is anyone from Ubuntu looking at this issue at all?

Unfortunately there's rather a complex interplay of subsystems here: It
seems the top end is Nautilus, and the bottom end might be libmtp. In
the middle GVFS, GIO, FUSE and all sorts of stuff might lurk.

If only some expert that knew how bits and pieces of a Linux
distribution were monitoring this thread!

Anyway, on the libmtp site, there's this nice email exchange:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=CAKnu2Mrp4s6hTXr%3DNp1VYN9sFmWbb6NV2GeTawSm2rsSu002GA%40mail.gmail.comforum_name=libmtp-discuss

It seems that the original MTP spec transferred everything in one go.
The uncached extension apparently allows devices to transfer portions of
the tree, if I'm reading the exchange correctly. There's also a link in
there to a different project called go-mtpfs (https://github.com/hanwen
/go-mtpfs). I haven't tried it yet, but it might hold promise.

Reading the last portion of the README is really enlightening.
http://libmtp.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=libmtp/libmtp;a=blob;f=README;hb=HEAD
MTP was really not designed to work like a file system. I presume the
confusion sets in because the UI conflates the object handling metaphor
with the file handling metaphor under Windows.

I have this issue on 12.04 (Final Release)

The account is the same as used with 11.04 and 11.10. Nothing has
changed in my home directory. But now upon connecting I get a popup
telling me the connection is untrusted. I can check to trust the
connection, but upon clicking OK, Empathy doesn't connect.

The solution is to re-enter my password for the account, but I don't
want to be doing this every time I boot up!

When running Empathy from terminal I noticed this message:
(empathy:16611): folks-WARNING **: Failed to find primary PersonaStore with
type ID 'eds' and ID 'system'.
Individuals will not be linked properly and creating new links between Personas

[Bug 750429] Re: empathy uses proxy when it shouldn't

2012-05-09 Thread Gerald Nunn
One potential workaround is if you have a choice between defining your
proxy manually or using an automatic URL, Empathy appears to only work
with the manual proxy entry so if you use the automatic setting Empathy
ignores the proxy. The downside is if you have a mix of IM services,
some requiring proxy some not, then this isn't too useful.

It hangs at this point, so it led me to think that the problem was at the

[Bug 972311] Re: Accessing a MTP device like the Galaxy Nexus fails

2012-05-09 Thread Jan Gutter
mtpfs, go-mtpfs, gmtp, mtp-detect and nautilus (gvfs, or gio, or
whatever) all use the same libmtp library. It seems that the common way
to query MTP devices used to be pull a list of all objects, push and
pull individual objects. A lot of old, legacy devices actually seem to
*expect* that kind of behaviour.

When Google decided upon MTP, they obviously just tested with Windows.
(The OSX people also tend to mumble and growl about the transfer speed).
I have no idea how the Windows MTP stack works: on Windows XP you have
to install Windows Media Player, but later versions seem to have it
built-in. The rationale being that you don't want people to install
third-party stuff, so you stick with whatever crap protocol Microsoft
designed. MTP is NOT made for generic file transfer, it's made for
media transfer (i.e. videos, music and pictures).

It's entirely plausible that Microsoft's MTP stack does a per-device
check (or uses massive USB id databases) to see whether the devices are
old or new style, and works accordingly. Also Microsoft's MTP stack
runs a single service that connects and speaks to the MTP devices, so
the way libmtp speaks to the devices is by nature completely different.

So, it looks like the two styles (incremental fetching of objects, and
full listing) seems to be slightly incompatible. libmtp supports both,
but the application using it (go-mtpfs and mtpfs) use entirely different
parts of the API, it seems.

So, either we need to find out where the code that uses libmtp in
Nautilus is built, use *shudder* go (I feel like installing .NET!) or
fix mtpfs to use a different style of access. I guess, waiting 10
minutes using gmtp is also an option.

Seems like the Ubuntu people are still MIA?

[Bug 820328] [NEW] Unity depends on gdm as a desktop manager and gives empty screen in ldm

2012-05-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Under Natty, the file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/65compiz_profile-on-session
reads as follows:

# This file is sourced by Xsession(5), not executed.
# Select unity profile if we are in the default session.
# The default profile is used otherwise.

if [ x$GDMSESSION = xgnome ]; then
COMPIZ_CONFIG_PROFILE=ubuntu
export COMPIZ_CONFIG_PROFILE
fi

The purpose of this script is to enable the Unity plugin in compiz in
the default session (where there is no gnome-shell or -panel) so that
the Unity shell is activated. There are two problems with this script:

1) The first one being that it depends on the environment variable
$GDMSESSION being set while /etc/X11/Xsession runs. This leads to
problems on LTSP clients where LDM instead of GDM is used so that there
is no variable $GDMSESSION. (This problem could be solved in the ldm
package by adding a script to /usr/share/ldm/rc.d but this wouldn't
solve the problem for other desktop managers.) In Oneiric, the
environment $DESKTOP_SESSION is used instead of $GDMSESSION but I am not
sure whether this should be set by all desktop managers.

2) The second problem with this script is that enabling the Unity plugin
depends on the session being named gnome. This means that one cannot
rename the session in /usr/share/xsessions without breaking Unity or one
cannot easily install a second Unity session in this directory.

A solution would be to enable the Unity plugin while gnome-session is
processing the file /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/ubuntu.session,
although I don't know how to hook a script in a gnome-session session
file.

Not sure who you call Ubuntu people, those who comments on that bug
are as much Ubuntu people that anyone, speaking as the person who look
at nautilus usually I don't own a mtp device to look at this issue, that
also seems rather a gvfs or libmtp issue rather than a nautilus.

Short summary: help to resolve the issue is welcome, upstream would be a
good place to report the issue, Ubuntu is mostly distributing software
and has limited resources, the code writers are probably better place to
have an idea about this

[Bug 997131] Re: evince crashed with SIGSEGV in XVisualIDFromVisual

2012-05-09 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Please understand, the reason this is a confusing issue is that it's not
immediately apparent from any system feedback where the issue lies:
Nautilus pops up on connecting your device, giving a cryptic error from
DBUS with very little help.

Like any non-trivial system where only a small fraction is visible, we
must rely on experts to point us in the right direction. I understand
it's a low priority for Canonical to fix this: maybe changing the error

Right, it means it needs debugging from somebody who has a clue about
this stack, launchpad might not best the best place, as said Ubuntu is

What is revelant to Canonical doesn't really matter here. Ubuntu is its

[Bug 889911] Re: Creating and naming two folders in a row produces an error: There is no in this folder

2012-05-09 Thread Aleksander Śmierciak
** Description changed:

  What happens:
In Nautilus, when creating two folders an error occurs, preventing creation
of two or more folders in a row (hotkeys, etc.).

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Open Nautilus and explore any folder/place.
  2. Create a folder using hotkey SHIFT + CTRL + N, type a name for it and
press ENTER.
  3. Create a second folder using hotkey SHIFT + CTRL + N, type a name for it
and press ENTER.
  4. Most (90%~) of the time*, an error window will show up with text:
The item could not be renamed
There is no in this folder. Perhaps it was just moved or deleted?
The folder which was created as second will have its name left as Untitled
Folder.

- * it appears to me as if this error shows up only when creating said two
- folders in a short time and without changing current selection. Both 32
- and 64-bit versions of Ubuntu where tested and it has to be noted that
- this misbehaviour isn't quite fresh, actually I do remember it occuring
- many times over the last year or so.

Except when the bugs were unable to be reported because Apport was
memory-hungry, or when it though the bug belonged to a package which was not
installed. And now, the bug reports are simply not sent (I even prefer that to

[Bug 959276] Re: Scrolling message in preview breaks rendering

2012-05-09 Thread Ken VanDine
I see this as well and have confirmed it happens in unity 2d as well.
The preview pane stops getting updates, so switching selected mail
doesn't update the preview pane. For me it happens even without
scrolling, but it seems to be most common on very long mails. I can
easily reproduce it with launchpad merge proposal emails, so maybe the
contents of a diff being rendered triggers something? Maybe a gtkhtml
bug?

[Bug 543611] Re: emacsclient -c randomly crashes emacs about 1 in every 5 to 10 times

2012-05-09 Thread Ryan Thompson
There's some nuance here. This bug is GTK-related. If your emacs daemon
is not compiled with gtk support (either a terminal-only version of
compiled with the lucid toolkit), then you will not see this bug. Even
if your emacs is compiled with gtk, you will still not see the bug
unless you actually create (and then destroy) an emacs X window that
uses GTK, so doing emacsclient -nw should not trigger the bug. But doing
emacsclient -c with the same daemon later should still cause a crash.

[Bug 912729] Re: [Unity-2D] Alt+tilde does not work

2012-05-09 Thread Michał Sawicz
It's actually Alt+` (backtick), or rather it's Alt+$the_key_over_tab,
and it works here (it's a metacity feature, btw). There's some more
information that will help:

- keyboard layout
- character given by the key in a terminal / text editor
- xev output when pressing that key

** Package changed: unity-2d (Ubuntu) = metacity (Ubuntu)
