Hi there,

Just ran gnome-settings-daemon --debug with strace on the background.
Maybe the info inside the .log is usable for the developers.

Cheers,

2012-06-06 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 969359] Re: [keyboard]: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu (vnp, virtualbox, ...)?

2012-06-06 Thread Krastanov
I do not have vpn or virtualbox and this affects me. It happened after
an update today on 12.04 (however the system was not updated for a long
time). I will remove virtualbox and vpn from the title.

** Summary changed:

- [keyboard]: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu (vnp, virtualbox, ...)?
+ [keyboard]: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu (and blinking numlock)

** Description changed:

+ Original message:

I don't know how to reproduce this bug, but after varying amounts of
normal usage of my laptop, I notice gnome-settings-daemon is consuming
  100% (approx) CPU.

I am not sure how to restart gnome-settings-daemon, I tried opening a
terminal and running gnome-settings-daemon again but this crashes my
system - my external monitor switches off and my laptop locks up. I am
  able to reboot with SysRq+REISUB.

Sorry I cannot provide more information - it happens twice now, maybe
someone can tell me how to get more information for the next time this
  happens.

[Bug 720466] Re: When I try burning DVDs it ejects and say that it's impossible to link plugin pads.

2012-06-06 Thread Nokir
When I start brasero with 'GST_DEBUG=*:3 brasero -g', I get the
following:

0:00:10.984295768 16466 0xf36580 INFOGST_PADS

gstpad.c:2034:gst_pad_link_prepare: caps are incompatible
BraseroBurn: (at burn-vob.c:684) BraseroVob Error while linking pads

'gst-inspect-0.10 ffenc_ac3' gives me:

  SINK template: 'sink'
Availability: Always
Capabilities:
  audio/x-raw-float
   channels: [ 1, 6 ]
   rate: { 48000, 44100, 32000 }
 endianness: 1234
  width: 32

I looked into plugins/transcode/burn-vob.c near line 684 and found out that the
capsfilter pad was set to use audio/x-raw-int, which is not compatible with
ffenc_ac3. So I made the following change to that file:

@@ -638,7 +638,7 @@
BRASERO_JOB_LOG (vob, Setting AC3 rate to 48000);
/* NOTE: we may want to limit the number of channels. */
- filtercaps = gst_caps_new_full (gst_structure_new (audio/x-raw-int,
+ filtercaps = gst_caps_new_full (gst_structure_new (audio/x-raw-float,
   rate, G_TYPE_INT,
48000,
   NULL),
NULL);

Now 'GST_DEBUG=*:3 brasero -g' shows me:

0:00:44.819663035 16554 0x2459580 INFOGST_PADS

The encoding is starting, but after some megabyte it hangs and the command line
doesn't print anything anymore. But this seems to be another bug, since the
very same happens if I select SVCD in the unmodified program.

[Bug 999888] Re: Missing brightness control in System Settings/Brightness and Lock

2012-06-06 Thread rpr nospam
Yes, it also happens in a guest session. I'm attaching the corresponding
~/.xsession-errors

I do not use a background picture on the desktop:
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
''

$ gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
'file:///usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png'

This gives back the default background picture but the Brightness and
Lock tool still does not show the brightness slider.

[Bug 1009432] [NEW] document viewer search problem in right to left languages

2012-06-06 Thread Mohammad
Public bug reported:

Hi
when I use the search functionality in document viewer, it searches the letters
as if they are written left to right. That is not a problem in english or any
left to right language. However, this is a problem in right to left languages.
I used it particularly with arabic but I guess it is the same for any other
right to left language.
In order for the program to detect a right to left word, the word needs to be
written in reverse in the search box.
I will give an english example since the words are easier to understand by
everyone but the problem actually only occurs with right to left languages.
if I want to search for the word 'hello', I need to type it in reverse as
'olleh' in the search box.

I am using ubuntu 12.04.

Thank you in advance

2012-06-06 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

This problem still occurs with the latest precise install, but the
workaround still works. You may have to re-apply it after updating -
some of the configuration files get overwritten by the updates.

[Bug 965080] Re: Sticky Edge is neither obvious nor explained

2012-06-06 Thread w-sky
I too find the term Sticky Edges inapprehensible. Also I wonder why
this option is not greyed out in a single display setup, since it
affects only multi display setups.

May I suggest: Make mouse stick to display edges.

Intuitionally I did expect the Sticky edges switch to control if
windows should stick to screen edges and/or automatically resize when
moving them. But a switch for that function is completely missing, is
it?

Also at this point I expected and I consider to be necessary the
following: a switch to enable and disable moving windows to other
workspaces with the mouse. Using Unity, currently windows can only
freely be moved around workspaces using the mouse when the workspace
switcher has been activated. Also, a switch to allow mouse movements to
other workspaces would be cool.

I do mention this here because this is somehow the same as or related to
sticky edges, but for workspaces.

[Bug 1009527] [NEW] user-accounts panel does not give the option to encrypt a new user's home directory

2012-06-06 Thread Paddy Launch
Public bug reported:

The gnome-control-center user-accounts panel does not give the user the
option to encrypt a new user's home directory.

This omission is clearly a bug, because the user is given the option of
encrypting their own home directory when installing the operating
system, and therefore would certainly expect this functionality to be
available for creating new accounts via the GUI.

[Bug 1004601] Re: OBEX file browsing extremely slow

2012-06-06 Thread Steve White
Hi Mathieu,

What is incomplete about this report?
Let me know what other info is needed, and I'll be glad to complete it.

One further observation isn't particularly surprising:

I finally managed to navigate some 5 directories deep to copy some photos from
the camera.
Just a copy-paste from the camera to a local directory.
The action took some minutes to begin (just like opening directories),
but the files transferred in seconds.

Again, the problem does not lie in data transfer rates.

The problem is a killer for normal users though.

[Bug 958052] Re: Show battery status in menu bar does not work

2012-06-06 Thread Patrick Akridge
Battery problems in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (64 bit):

Laptop Specs..

TOSHIBA L755 with an Intel Core i3 Processor (it is 64bit, hence that is
why I use Ubuntu 64 bit) with 4GB RAM, with about a 500 GB Hard Drive
(that really doesn't matter) and a Battery and Charger that is NOT even
7 months old.. when working, Ubuntu Power Stats tells me that it has a
capacity of 99% and only can't charge about .5 Wh of about what it
should (because it is at 99% capacity).. TOSHIBA BRANDED health monitor
told me when I was using Windows 7 Home Premium that the battery had a
85% Health... None the less, the battery STILL works and lasts up to 4
or 4.5 hours depending on what I am doing.. The ONLY reason why the
battery doesn't last like a crazy 8 hours is because I am always using
the Battery to surf the web... In fact... I am using the battery right
now to post this comment

Anyways,

I also experience the problem..

Battery isn't indicated sometime (READ: Most of the time); even though
it is there.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit with the LATEST updates as of 6/5/12
and am using GNOME 3.4.1 as the desktop environment.. I tried using
Unity, but it doesn't show up there, either.. None the less.. I don't
like Unity because of it's hard to use interface..

Anyways, if you put the system on Suspend (close the laptop lid), then
when you wakeup, the battery indicator will likely be there, but I need
it to be there all of the time..

I tried do the ALT + F2 and running r as the command and it doesn't
help at all.

I also tried various things such as logging out and logging back in AND
running gnome-control-center in Terminal.. no errors, but the Power
setting to show the battery status all of the time doesn't stick.. the
value doesn't stick.

That is my two cents on the battery statuses in Ubuntu 12.04...

[Bug 1009607] [NEW] User Accounts does not delete all files when deleting a user with an encrypted folder

2012-06-06 Thread Paddy Landau
Public bug reported:

System Settings User Accounts delete a user:
If the user has an encrypted home folder, this action does not delete his
(encrypted) files.

This is a potential (though highly unlikely) security vulnerability, as
recreating the user can reveal the previous files (as described below).

How to duplicate:

1. Create a user with an encrypted folder. The easiest way to do this AFAIK is
to install gnome-system tools. Start Users Groups Add (fill in details)
Encrypt home folder to protect sensitive data. You can see that the user has
an encrypted folder:
(a) /home/newuser contains two files, viz. Access-Your-Private-Data.desktop and
README.txt.
(b) /home/.ecryptfs/newuser/.ecryptfs contains a few files.
(c) /home/.ecryptfs/newuser/.Private contains a few encrypted files.

3. Log into the new user and create a new file with some information,
for example a text file on the Desktop.

4. Log out of the new user.

5. Delete the user and his files.
(a) If you do this from gnome-system-tools, this works correctly; it deletes
/home/newuser and /home/.ecryptfs/newuser.
(b) But, if you do it from System Settings User Accounts - Delete
Files, although it deletes /home/newuser, it does not delete
/home/.ecryptfs/newuser.

6. Recreate the new user with the same password as before.

7. Log into the new user; you will still see the previous file that you
created.

[Bug 878198] Re: Difficult to grab window borders in unity-2d

2012-06-06 Thread James
I didn't change the xserver, I'm using a remote connection which uses
it's own local xserver. For example, I run x2go, which runs a scaled-
back ximing xserver *locally*, however all this means is that all x
information is forwarded to this local xserver. I don't have to install
gnome, unity, etc locally as this all exists on the server. So I am
dependent on the window manager/desktop manager configurations on the
server. Said another way, there is no setting I can change locally
which would affect bordersize or dekstop type (ubutu-3d/2d), all this
must be done on the server (a 100% standard 12.04 install).

[Bug 887946] Re: Deadlocks in main loop

2012-06-06 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

Some applications get stuck in a deadlock when utilizing glib. One of
examples is lrmadmin, when connecting to lrmd. Upstream provided a fix
for this bug and Ubuntu's version 11.04 and newer do not have this
  issue.

Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 do not contain the fix. Upstream fix:
+ https://mail.gnome.org/archives/commits-list/2010-November/msg01816.html

+ [Impact]
+ Remove potential and demonstratable deadlocks in glib code.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ * Install lucid
+ * add ubuntu-ha-maintainers lucid ppa and update repo:
+apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-ha-maintainers/lucid-cluster ; apt-get update
+ * Install pacemaker:
+apt-get -y install pacemaker
+ * Enable corosync (/etc/default/corosync) and start it:
+sed -i -e 's/START=no/START=yes/' /etc/default/corosync
+service corosync start
+ * Open two client-server connections:
+lrmadmin -C ; lrmadmin -C
+It deadlocks on second run (it actually never finishes the first run).
+
+ * Kill lrmd and stop corosync:
+killall -9 lrmd ; service corosync stop
+ * install fix
+apt-get update apt-get install libglib2.0-0
+ * Start corosync:
+service corosync start
+ * Run the test again:
+lrmadmin -C ; lrmadmin -C ; lrmadmin -C ; lrmadmin -C
+ * It doesn't deadlock.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Regression potential should be very small. This change is still present in
almost unmodified upstream code to this day (g_source_unref_internal of
glib/gmain.c). The upstream trunk commit is at
http://git.gnome.org/browse/glib/commit/?id=b358202856682e5cdefb0b4b8aaed3a45d9a85fa
 .

[Bug 1007133] Re: Evolution locks up under KDE in Kubuntu 12.04 when setting an alarm on an appointment

2012-06-06 Thread cIdde
Ok, the work around is only of limited value, as I also experience other
keyboard and mouse click input failures similar to this bug:

https://mail.gnome.org/archives/evolution-list/2012-June/msg0.html

The whole thing might be related to this bug with the color picker,
which I can reproduce on my system, too:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676218

Has the patch to gtkhtml mentioned in that thread been integrated in
ubuntu already somewhere? Anyone experience with the bug and the fix?
When I find the tine, I could try the patch, but if someone has already
done that, I would be glad, if I could save the time.

No idea if this makes sense, did
sudo gnome-settings-daemon --debug
then tried doing an apply in Displays, which got
_usr_lib_gnome-settings-daemon_gnome-settings-daemon.106.crash
See bug #1009683

I didn't find a strace-gnome-settings-daemon.log anywhere.

[Bug 1009703] [NEW] brasero intermittently fails to appear on desktop when activated via nautilus context menu

2012-06-06 Thread Paddy Launch
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. In nautilus right-click on an .iso file and select open with brasero disc
burner
2. If the brasero dialog appears, then click cancel.
3. repeat step 1.

Expected behaviour: Brasero dialog appears

Actual behaviour: nothing appears

pgrep -l brasero shows that a brasero process is running. If you kill
that process, you are then able to get to the brasero dialog by
selecting the option from the context menu.

Note: I first noticed this the very first time I right-click selected
brasero - nothing appeared and there was no feedback. Also, when this
happens, attempting to start brasero from the Dash also results in
nothing happening, no feedback.

[Bug 1009708] [NEW] Rhythmbox doesn't transfer music to ipod

2012-06-06 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Public bug reported:

When trying to transfer music (mainly .mp3) or audio podcasts to my iPod
Nano 4th Gen. 16 GB by dragging the desired files from my library to my
ipod's library in Rhythmbox the files are not transferred.

I also tried several times to transfer an affected song (always the
same) to the ipod and it actually worked one out of about 20 times I
tried it.

It's not a problem with the ipod since I can transfer music using
Banshee and gtkPod without problems (although gtkpod displays some
errors at startup).

Gtkpod reports an error with SHA 1 checksums for
iPod_Control/iTunes/iTunesDB which are different than the ones for
iPod_Control/iTunes/iTunesDB.ext according to gtkpod (if this is
important for my problem …).

[Bug 993792] Re: R.Box doesn't show the album art

2012-06-06 Thread Michael Wayne Goodman
Same here. In fact, this bug report is how I found out how to show the
album art. It seems the art pane is just hidden below the bottom of the
window. I was able to partially view the album art of the currently
playing song by switching to small display, then back to full, then
resizing the window (since turning off small-display didn't restore the
original size... another bug, perhaps?).

srsly, I don't get why you devs don't take your users serious. Not even
answering to a 4 year all inconvenience that's a complete showblocker
for many users ... BUT MORE FEATURES ... doesn't look like a real hard
thing to fix also ... it's just a configurable browser view !!! ... but
you dev guys like to impress with NEW FEATURTES ... this bug here is too
big a challenge, because devs can't think usability and like to show off
...

I don't care anymore, gratz for being part of ubuntu again, go on
ignoring ... nice you use musicbrainz now ... a suggestion: PLZ DELETE

[Bug 580961] Re: unzip fails to deal correctly with filename encodings

2012-06-06 Thread Lasse Kärkkäinen
For whatever the reason, unzip-6.0-4ubuntu1 still doesn't support
choosing the codepage and it uses CP866 (cyrillic) by default. This is a
very bad choice. The default should be CP437 as is the default used by
IBM BIOS, MS-DOS, VGA, etc. It should *also* be configurable via
commandline option.

Meanwhile, incorrectly extracted filenames can be fixed by
convmv -f UTF-8 -t CP866 -r --notest . # Undo the incorrect conversion done
by unzip
convmv -f CP437 -t UTF-8 -r --notest . # Convert CP437 (MS-DOS charset) into
UTF-8 (what Linux systems should use nowadays)

If your zip actually uses something else, replace CP437 with the
applicable DOS codepage (and remove --notest to do dry runs without
actually renaming anything while testing different options).
