[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when Shut Down chosen from GUI

Changing to default values did not help me either. I tried so many
things in the past weeks but I can't make it reproducable or find any
more coincidences.

[Bug 1016388] [NEW] Alienware M17xR3 continues running off battery when adapter is re-plugged

2012-06-22 Thread Jeshurun
Public bug reported:

If the power source is removed from the laptop at any time while my
computer is running, and then re-plugged back in, the laptop fails to
recognize the source and continues to run off the battery.

The problem did not exist in Ubuntu until the latest kernel and nvidia
driver update (lucid-backports, kernel version 3.0.0-21-generic).

Some observations:
1. If the power source is unplugged, the indicator does not switch to the
battery state immediately, and only does so after about 4 seconds.
2. If, however, it does change to show the battery icon, it never switches
back to charging when plugged back in.
3. The only way to get the battery to start charging again is to remove the
battery when the laptop is plugged in (laptop switches off of course) and then
boot back in.
4. If the power source is reconnected before the power icon switches to the
battery icon, the system continues running like nothing ever happened, and
continues charging.
5. When the battery has fallen into the non-charging state, even a regular
power cycle will not get it to charge. Also, when in this state, the battery
does not charge in Windows either (Windows however shows that a power source
has been connected, but won't charge the battery). However, after doing the
remove battery when plugged in trick, and booting into Windows, Windows
properly recognizes when the adapter is plugged / unplugged and starts / stops
charging accordingly.

[Bug 989689] Re: Synaptics touchpad stops working

2012-06-22 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jens Finkhäuser, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

Could you please provide the information following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection ?

As well, if you could also please test the latest upstream kernel
available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream
developers to examine the issue. Refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This
can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag
located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-
upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not
boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

2012-06-22 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

When playing a movie in full-screen, a command field (that looks like

It is possible to hit Esc once to make it go away, but it comes back

[Bug 989568] Re: gnome-shell shortcuts do not work and cannot be changed

2012-06-22 Thread Michael Berg
Sebastien, I really appreciate that you were able to narrow down the
cause of this issue. Thanks for that.

But I noticed you set the importance to low. Can I ask why you you
feel this is a low priority item? Keyboard shortcuts not working, and
interfering with application shortcuts does not sound like a low
priority problem. In my everyday life it certainly doesn't feel like a
low priority problem :-)

Is there something I can do to somehow work around the problem until a
solution is provided through the official channels?

[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when Shut Down chosen from GUI

2012-06-22 Thread Mark Schneider
I found out something interesting:

I installed the KDE-environment via software center. I observed the
following behavior:

I always can work in Unity, I only can't switch to a tty after some
time. If I use KDE, I work normally, but all of a sudden my entire
system freezes. I also can't switch to a tty anymore. I think at the
point where I simply can't switch to a tty in Unity anymore, the KDE-
System freezes.

[Bug 1014558] Re: MSN Account Offline Error

2012-06-22 Thread Jorge Rama
Ok, I'll try to clarify.

I have Empathy running on startup.

Each time it started my MSN account status would be: Offline - Status set to
Offline.
I would then disable it and then re-enable on the Account status window ( F4)
and the it would be set to Available and my MSN contacts would be displayed.

Now I am showing a different issue (same equipment):

Empathy main window claims my accounts are all disabled. When I check
the Account status (F4) it clearly shows MSN trying to connect and it
succeeds. However the main window stil claims my accounts are disabled.
If I quit Empathy and relaunch my MSN contacts are instantly displayed.

They shutdown and poower off.
Ctrl-alt-f1 works. also the other consoles work. On some machines with a little

@mc-monti: your problem seems to me very hardware-specific. Can you disable
ACPI in BIOS?
Did you ever had a distro which sut down and power off regularly? If not, it
will be hard to find a solution, because then it is for sure a
hardware-specific phenonemon...

[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when Shut Down chosen from GUI

2012-06-22 Thread Stefan Essl
I experienced similiar problems when notebooks (their CPU) are getting hot:
- the machines stuck / freezes and i wasn't able to do anything.

Machines got hot when the power management didn't work as expected...and
the problem was the ACPI or APM configuration/manipulation in BIOS (if
there was any possibility at all) or in the kernel...and things got
better and started to work with ubuntu 8.04

The great problem is, so do i think, that there are many hardware
vendors, and they all have different components from different
manufacturers and they all have different BIOS Software and not all have
the time to stick to conventions/norms/standards or they don't like the
standardsbut it is really hard to find out, if it is a real hardware
damage or a workaround, with which one could live...

In your case there must be a solution, because it worked with 10.04 LTS, so it
has to work with 12.04 LTS too.
Maybe there was a certain/extra kernel module in10.04 in use for your notebook,
which made it work as expected?

[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when Shut Down chosen from GUI

2012-06-22 Thread Stefan Essl
don't know if this is really useful, but it shows that the problem is not OS
dependent.
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=192864

What I read there is that there is an issue about the nvidia card driver and
the kernel.
So maybe if you just use a generic driver, it could solve your shutdown -
poweroff problem, but you won#T use the nvidia driver, what could be but maybe
is not an issue...
But it is just another guess!

...yes of course also other users have an similiar but maybe a slightly
different problem...and as we said before: it worked with 10.04 so it
will with 12.04!

[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when Shut Down chosen from GUI

2012-06-22 Thread Mark Schneider
Ok ok, I'll share your optimism :)

I already experimented a little with the nvidia driver. I switched to
current updates. I am running now version 295.49. It did not help. I
will try to install a generic driver and report then again. But first I
have to find out where to get a generic driver :)

I have the same problem as described by David. Rhythmbox stops after
having played the first song on the Absolute Radio 90s radio. I start

@ Stefan

I won't count my chickens before they hatch ... but removing the nvidia

very often after switching to the generic driver.

I can't believe it. I will keep on testing. And I also will test new
drivers.

But so far: THANK YOU!

[Bug 1016569] [NEW] Rhythmbox doesn't get all podcast episodes

2012-06-22 Thread Sicco van Sas
Public bug reported:

Adding the following podcast
(http://weblogs.vpro.nl/afspelen/category/radio/ovt/feed/) to Rhythmbox
2.96 in Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit results in a new podcast feed which shows
only 2 episodes (one from Sep 4th 2011, and one form Jun 3rd 2012)
instead of all the episodes. In Banshee, adding the podcast lists all
episodes so I guess the feed itself is not the problem.

Could you test if this bug exist in new totem 3.0.1 and 3.4 versions? Totem 3.4
fixes lots of bugs, which exists in 3.0.1, which is in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
You can install Totem 3.4.2 from official gnome3-team repository (
ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 ), see https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3

[Bug 1016577] [NEW] search is done on the left column rather than the folder contents

2012-06-22 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open a Nautilus window
2. On the left column, click on a disk on the top-left, under Devices. The
contents of the disk are shown on the right
3. Start typing

Expected: search should be done in the contents of the directory, on the right
Observed: search is done within the left column.

Additionally:
4. Click inside the window on the right, where the contents are being
displayed, but click on the empty part, not on a particular item
5. Start typing
- Expected: at least NOW, the contents should be searched
- Observed: search is STILL done within the left column, until you click some
file.

Searching the left column is mostly useless and I wonder whether one may
_ever_ want to search the left column; however, it's just one more
possibility, so why not.

However, when you have clicked on a disk unit and the contents have been
displayed, focus, or whatever determines the default place where search will
occur when typing, should definitely be on the contents on the right by
default.
Also, clicking within one of the two areas should be enough to switch on which
one search will be done, it should not be necessary to select a particular item
so change focus.

[Bug 1016581] [NEW] odb file extension should be associated with LibreOffice Base instead Archive Manager

2012-06-22 Thread Csipak Attila
Public bug reported:

1. Create a new database file (foo.odb) using LibreOffice Base.
2. Close LibreOffice.
3. Open foo.odb via dash home / recent files. Since the odb extension is
associated with Archive Manager (alias File Roller) as a default, I got a nice
error at this point.

If I open Nautilis and correct the file association to LibreOffice, the
above steps work OK, as expected. The question is: why was the odf
extension by default associated with the Archive Manager application?

[Bug 1016581] Re: odb file extension should be associated with LibreOffice Base instead Archive Manager

2012-06-22 Thread Csipak Attila
Here's an example database file (no private information in it).

Also It's just as easy to reproduce by doing step 1-3. above (creating
an empty *.odb file with LibreOffice Base, and reopening it via dash or
even from nautilus). I just reproduced the error this way on my wife's
notebook, so I guess I'm not the only one having a default *odf -
archive manager file association.

[Bug 1001578] Re: Nautilus on SSD is slower than on external HDD

2012-06-22 Thread OO-Dragon
I have had the same problem with a new install and fully updated 12.04
as of yestarday. I was using a OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD (with new
firmware 1.4.1.3). I just ended up imaging the whole disk over to a
normal HDD and its much better now.

Just as a few side notes, I was using it in a older HP desktop (5800 I
think) that does not support AHCI, but it was a brand new SSD, never
been used before, so it should of been running better then a HDD...
especially this older 80GB one. I found everything seemed to pause
for seconds before continuing. Just using unity was annoyingly slow.

- d/initramfs/mdadm-functions: Record in /run when boot-degraded
question has been asked so that it is only asked once
- pass --test to mdadm to enable result codes for degraded arrays.
- debian/control: we need udev and util-linux in the right version. We
also remove the build dependency from quilt and docbook-to-man as both
are not used in Ubuntus mdadm.
- debian/initramfs/hook: kept the Ubuntus version for handling the absence
of active raid arrays in initramfs/etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
- debian/initramfs/script.local-top.DEBIAN, debian/mdadm-startall,
debian/mdadm.raid.DEBIAN: removed. udev does its job now instead.
- debian/mdadm-startall.sgml, debian/mdadm-startall.8: documentation of
  unused startall script
- debian/mdadm.config, debian/mdadm.postinst - let udev do the handling
instead. Resolved merge conflict by keeping Ubuntu's version.
- debian/mdadm.postinst, debian/mdadm.config, initramfs/init-premount:
  boot-degraded enablement; maintain udev starting of RAID devices;
init-premount hook script for the initramfs, to provide information at
  boot
- debian/mkconf.in is the older mkconf. Kept the Ubuntu version.
- debian/rules: Kept Ubuntus version for installing apport hooks, not
  installing un-used startall script.
- debian/install-rc, check.d/_numbers, check.d/root_on_raid: Ubuntu partman
  installer changes
- debian/presubj: Dropped this unused bug reporting file. Instead use
source_mdadm.py act as an apport hook for bug handling.
- d/p/debian-changes-3.1.4-1+8efb9d1ubuntu4: mdadm udev rule
incrementally adds mdadm member when detected. Starting such an
array in degraded mode is possible by mdadm -IRs. Using mdadm
-ARs without stopping the array first does nothing when no
mdarray-unassociated device is available. Using mdadm -IRs to
start a previously partially assembled array through incremental
mode. Keeping the mdadm -ARs for assembling arrays which were for
some reason not assembled through incremental mode (i.e through
  mdadm's udev rule).

  * Additional Ubuntu changes:
  - debian/initramfs/local-premount: add call wait_for_udev to wait a
little longer for RAID devices to appear (LP: #942106)

  * Dropped Ubuntu changes:
- Build udeb with -O2 on ppc64, working around a link error. Builds
  fine without it on debian.
- rename debian/mdadm.vol_id.udev to debian/mdadm.mdadm-blkid.udev so
that the rules file ends up with a more reasonable name. debian/rules
changes for adding ubuntu's udev rule corresponding to mdadm. As we
are now using 'upstream' udev rules see 3.2.3-2ubuntu2.

  * Changes to Ubuntu changes:
- debian/source_mdadm.py: make apport hook python 2 and 3 compatible
  (LP: #1013171).

  * New upstream release closes this bugs:
- mdadm --detail --scan segfaults during update-initramfs (LP: #969384)
