Or you could make this non-standard behaviour a plugin that you install
(or not) by default, so that users can disable it if they don't want it.

[Bug 1070701] [NEW] Volume slider set to minimum each time Rhythmbox starts, no matter what it was at before closing

2012-10-24 Thread Chris Wilson
Public bug reported:

When you first start Rhythmbox, you will see the volume slider set to

What should happen is the slider is set to half way on first startup,
and then remembers its previous setting at each subsequent startup.

[Bug 959084] Re: empathy-chat consistently uses 9-10 % CPU

2012-10-24 Thread Guillaume Desmottes
I did some testing and this bug only appears when using Ubuntu's adium
theme so it's either a theme bug (like some js infinite loop or
something) or a webkit-gtk one. I can reproduce this bug on F17 as well.

I won't have time to investigate this issue further but the next step could do
to try some profiling using Webkit's inspector tool:
- gsettings set org.gnome.Empathy.conversation enable-webkit-developer-tools
true
- Open a chat with the adium theme
- Right click and select 'Inspect Element'

It would be cool if some webkit(-gtk) could take a look on this issue.

So another useful thing to do would be to bisect through the theme

[Bug 875002] Re: choosing quit from unity launcher doesn't close rhythmbox if music is playing

2012-10-24 Thread Michael Kanis
Please do NOT introduce preferences or plugins or whatnot for just plain
wrong behaviour. This has to be fixed, because it is a bug and that's
all. If Rhythmbox gets a preference for this kind of behaviour, then
every program should have one. Or why shouldn't they? Either make RB
behave like the other programs or make the other programs behave like
RB. Right now on Ubuntu there is this weird mix between OS X-like
application-based behaviour where closing the app's window does not end
the program and the Windows-like window-based opposite.

Please, read this article by Joel Spolsky about introducing preferences,
which fits in here perfectly:

[Bug 875002] Re: choosing quit from unity launcher doesn't close rhythmbox if music is playing

2012-10-24 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Chris, are you sure bug #694860 is a duplicate? As mentioned by
Sebastien there, that one has roots in a spec [1] (A compliant player
should also keep playing if you close its window while it is playing)
whereas this one is just incorrect behavior (selecting 'Quit' doesn't
actually quit). FWIF, I don't agree with the spec and agree with Michael
above: RB as all music players should just behave like other apps do
without exceptions or special addons.

(It seems that the Finnish locale now also has 'Quit' translated to mean
quit and not 'Close' as it was when I commented above.)

[Bug 873191] Re: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression]

2012-10-24 Thread Ian Lynch
I came across a suggestion to a brightness issue on a different machine
that was fixed by setting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX= to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_os_name=Microsoft Windows XP. Apparently
fooling the bios into thinking its running Windows frees up more
facilities including control of brightness.

To make the adjustment to Grub, go to a terminal, sudo gedit
etc/default/grub will put the grub file into gedit, find the line and
edit it and save. Then in the terminal sudo update-grub.

Not yet tried it because I need more time in case I lose my screen
again! But someone else might want to.

Some more details of my set up below. (Note I currently have acpi off as
part of a different more complex fix and hope to be able to get it back
on to stop my laptop overheating and running the battery down in 10
minutes!)

[Bug 875002] Re: choosing quit from unity launcher doesn't close rhythmbox if music is playing

2012-10-24 Thread Julien Olivier
The problem is simply due to the fact that Ubuntu has other standards
than GNOME. And that's why I think it would be better for them to change
those standards using removable plugins instead of directly patching the
application. This way, it is still possible to use Ubuntu as a base for
a standard GNOME-based distribution while still benefitting from the
greatness of Ubuntu.

[Bug 1011345] Re: Laptop does not suspend upon closing the lid

2012-10-24 Thread Damian Beltrami
If I try to suspend from the menu, my screen goes blank but the laptop
does not power down. The only course of action is to force a shutdown
by holding the power button down.

[Bug 1049991] Re: [regression] UTF-8 in iPhone name displayed incorrectly

2012-10-24 Thread Sebastien Bacher
** Changed in: libimobiledevice (Ubuntu Quantal)
   Status: Triaged = In Progress

** Description changed:

+ Impact:
+ Some iphone devices are incorrectly named
+
+ Test Case:
+ 1) Plug in an iPhone with a name that contains a right single quotation mark
+ 2) View the contents of /run/user/$USER/gvfs
+
+ Expected results:
+ The name of the mount points created for the phone match the name of the
iPhone. No extra characters are inserted in the name of the mount points.
+
+ Regression Potential:
+ Check the device name
+
+ ---
+
When I plug my iPhone into my system running 12.10, it is automatically
mounted in ~/.gvfs. The name of the mount point is incorrect - some
characters in the name are replaced by whitespace. For example, my
phone's name is Steve's iPhone The apostrophe is unicode 'right single
quotation mark' (U+2019). It is not displayed in the name of the mount
  point.

This is a regression from 12.04, in which the right single quotation
mark was displayed properly in the name of the mount point.

  To reproduce:
  1) Plug in an iPhone with a name that contains a right single quotation mark
  2) View the contents of ~/.gvfs (e.g. `ll ~/.gvfs`)

  Expected results:
The name of the mount points created for the phone match the name of the
iPhone. No extra characters are inserted in the name of the mount points.

  Actual results:
The name of the mount points created have extra spaces, and the quote mark is
gone. For example:
  steve@steve-laptop:~$ ll ~/.gvfs/
  total 4
  dr-x-- 4 steve steve0 Sep 10 08:54 ./
  drwxr-xr-x 73 steve steve 4096 Sep 12 10:07 ../
  drwx-- 1 steve steve0 Dec 31 1969 Documents on Steve s iPhone/
  drwx-- 1 steve steve 544 Sep 9 10:57 Steve s iPhone/

(Note the extra spaces between my name and the 's' - these should not be
  there).

The strange naming, with extraneous spaces, is also seen in nautilus and
other windows that display the name of the phone, which is ugly.

  Right single quote is E2 80 99 in UTF-8 (3 bytes - hence the 3 extra
spaces in place of the quote mark), so it looks like gvfs is no longer
  decoding UTF-8?

[Bug 1069531] Re: Cannot login to Empathy after setting up Google online account

2012-10-24 Thread BorisH
Ok I've got it. In my case, I was using a two-step auth account.
The password configured in empathy was an application-specific password, which
method seems not supported with OAUTH2.
After removing the empathy account and recreating it, I've got the
login/password that clearly specify to not enter the application-specific
password but the account password, then the 2nd step password.
Then it worked.

[Bug 1070771] [NEW] 3.6.1 stable update

2012-10-24 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug reported:

There is a new bugfix version:

===
gedit 3.6.1
===

New Features and Fixes
==
- File Browser side panel improvements (Ignacio Casal Quinteiro)
- Fix print preview in landscape mode (Adrian Johnson)
- Misc bugfixes

Impact:
The new version fixes some bugs and has updated translations. GNOME has a MRE
so the update should qualify for SRU

Test Case:
Check that gedit keeps working, testing the print preview in lanscape mode
should be easy to verify that fix

Regression Potential:
Limited, watch for the print previews

[Bug 1070786] [NEW] Gedit inhibits Compiz grid triggering

2012-10-24 Thread Dmitry Kann
Public bug reported:

It's a very strange behaviour and somewhat erratic too.

When I start Gedit, it seems to block the Compiz grid function (window
alignment when you drag them to an edge of the screen, presented with
orange overlay) for all other windows -- mostly but not always. Gedit
window itself I never managed to make trigger the grid.

As soon as I close Gedit, grid triggering is back again. Weird.

It's only appeared in Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal.

Yes, I get this too. I have two email accounts in Evolution, one for
home and one for Work. I have created signature named 'Home' and another
named 'Work'. If I create a new home email I just get the Home
signature. If I reply (or Group reply) to a home email, I get 2 Home
signatures. If I create a new work email I get a Work signature followed
(underneath) by a Home signature. If I reply to a work email I get 2
Work signatures and then a Home signature!

This report is not a duplicate of bug #1069255. That one had to do with
the fact that the gvfs directory had moved. This one had to do with the
fact that, in its new location, it can't be opened.

[Bug 875002] Re: choosing quit from unity launcher doesn't close rhythmbox if music is playing

2012-10-24 Thread Chris Wilson
Jani, I can't be certain since I haven't looked at the code, but I think
the Quit action on the Unity Launchpad is simply forwarding to the
same function that is called when clicking the close button on the title
bar. I believe that these are both the same issue being described in
different ways - In the case of this report, it's not quitting when you
choose to quit _because_ the spec says it shouldn't.

In hindsight, my earlier idea of having an option does seem like a bad
one. Rhythmbox should just be patched to not do this, though I'm not
entirely sure how difficult that would be.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I added a USB card that has a long name, the preferences window got

so diffult and tricky to use... :(

You could report to the ubuntu online accounts project that it should be
possible to turn off certain integrations and/or choose specifically what
integration you want.

 Title:
Cannot login to Empathy after setting up Google online account

Status in “empathy” package in Ubuntu:
   Incomplete

 Bug description:
   Description: Ubuntu 12.10
   Release: 12.10

   empathy:
 Installed: 3.6.0.3-0ubuntu1
 Candidate: 3.6.0.3-0ubuntu1
 Version table:
*** 3.6.0.3-0ubuntu1 0
   500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/main amd64
 Packages
   100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

   Expected behaviour:

   * New installation of 12.10 Ubuntu
   * Expected to be able to use Google Talk in Empathy after adding a
 Google account under Online Accounts

   Actual behaviour:

   * Account can be added successfully, however Empathy displays Google
 Talk Account requires authorisation
   * Clicking on the icon opens Online Accounts but does not offer an
option to perform any further authorisation.

   Investigation:

   * Seahorse shows two entries for the Google account, one of which lists
the correct password, the other of which lists a seemingly random
collection of characters separated by percentage symbols
   * Checked Google account, Ubuntu has permission to access: Picasa Web
Albums, Profile Information, Google Docs, Google Talk
   * Google account is not set up to use 2-step verification
   * Removed account and seahorse entries, set up from scratch
   * If possible, will use non-alphanumeric characters in passwords, so
tested with only alphanumeric password - no difference
   * Not going through a proxy

   Activating empathy-debugger shows:

   wocky/-DEBUG: 21/10/12 11:22:20.784214: _end_element_ns: Received stanza
   * failure xmlns='urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-sasl'
   * not-authorized
   * missing-username xmlns='google:auth'
   wocky/-DEBUG: 21/10/12 11:22:20.784320: auth_failed:
 wocky-sasl-auth.c:274: Authentication failed!: Authentication failed:
 not-authorized
   gabbleauthentication-DEBUG: 21/10/12 11:22:20.784421:
 gabble_server_sasl_channel_fail (server-sasl-channel.c:929): auth failed:
 WOCKY_AUTH_ERROR_FAILURE (#6): Authentication failed: not-authorized
   gabbleconnection-DEBUG: 21/10/12 11:22:20.784534:
 connector_error_disconnect (connection.c:1760): Interactive authentication
 error, reason 3, dbus error
 org.freedesktop.Telepathy.Error.AuthenticationFailed

So, it seems that seahorse has the correct password in place, and the
Google account is set up in such a way as to allow the application to
work. That being the case, it makes no sense to be getting an
authorisation error, unless there is something else that isn't
   immediately obvious.

Have checked for open bugs here:

   * https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bugs
   * https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=telepathy

However nothing that matched this exact problem jumped out - a lot of
issues seem to be with 2-step verification (but as mentioned earlier
   this has not been enabled).

   Asked for advice here:
   *
 http://askubuntu.com/questions/204062/cannot-login-to-empathy-after-setting-up-google-online-account

Was advised to log a bug report.

[Bug 1070877] [NEW] vfat mounts as showexec

2012-10-24 Thread Dave Walker
Public bug reported:

Kinda surprised to see *.py/*.sh not executable on pen drives...

   showexec
If set, the execute permission bits of the file will be
allowed only if the extension part of the name is .EXE, .COM, or
  .BAT. Not set by default.

The good news is that i learned a new (useless) mount option, so today..
I am a better person for that knowledge.

[Bug 1070905] [NEW] a11y panel calls g_settings_new() on (uninstalled) overlay scrollbar schema

2012-10-24 Thread Ryan Lortie
Public bug reported:

We have a patch in the control-centre that depends on a schema that may
not be installed (if overlay scrollbars have been removed).

This causes the entire control centre to crash when trying to open the
a11y panel if overlay scrollbars have been uninstalled (which is
something particularly likely to be done by a user requiring a11y
features, since overlay scrollbars are known to cause issues for these
users).

[Bug 959084] Re: empathy-chat consistently uses 9-10 % CPU

2012-10-24 Thread Chad Miller
Until the window is filled vertically, the process enters some loop. In
analyzing syscalls, it's a half dozen clock_gettime()s and then a rather
expensive poll() of a socket along with a recv() that fails. Loop about
200 times per second.

12:13:37 recv(8, 0x8a19060, 4096, 0)= -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

[Bug 64301] Re: Unable to unlock screen when using ldap

2012-10-24 Thread Larry Mancinelli
Sorry to awaken such an old thread, but in case anyone is still having
problems with this, I was able to get it working perfectly in my
environment. I was experiencing the original issue and I tried the
MattPie/Emu solution from posts #20/21, but I was still receiving two
password prompts for local users. I ended up taking their suggestions
and coming up with this:

I did not have to change anything in /etc/pam.d/gnome-screensaver.
Instead, I made the first two lines in /etc/pam.d/common-auth file read
as follows:

auth[success=2 default=ignore]  pam_ldap.so
auth[success=1 default=ignore]  pam_unix.so nullok_secure use_first_pass

Using this configuration, both local users and ldap users can log into
the desktop AND unlock the screensaver by entering their password only
once. I cannot speak to how well this works with an encrypted ldap
setup.
