[Bug 1077621] [NEW] Privacy settings in gnome-control-center should be password protected

2012-11-11 Thread Barneedhar
Public bug reported:

Currently, the privacy settings are not secured properly and allows
driveby users to get a glimpse of the user's privacy settings.

To make my point, if someone manages to view the list of folders that a
user doesn't want Zeitgeist to log, he would be able to find the exact
folders that the user does not want others to get an easy access.

Hence, I suggest the privacy settings are locked by default similar to
how the User Accounts work and the settings are only accessible if the
user inputs the password. This would provide added security to the
user's privacy settings.

[Bug 1077633] [NEW] user background image is stretched too big in gd

2012-11-11 Thread JoaoH
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.10 on Dell XPS 13
I set the background image on the desktop to a nice dark gradient green color
and added the Ubuntu logo to the center of the desktop and set it to Center.
The image is 200x200 pixles. When at the login screen, the picture is
automaticallhy stretched to full screen which makes the 200x200 image look
really bad. GDM should respect the setting of the users background settings.

Happens from time to time, I notice it by my laptop's fans starting to

[Bug 1048059] Re: Adding ACLs to /media/$user does not work

2012-11-11 Thread Molly
I can confirm this error on a fully installed (not Live CD) 12.10. I have a
media reader that I keep an 8gb SD card in for media storage that was always
recognized and automatically mounted in 12.04.
I attempted the fix that worked for several others of:
# Add a folder
sudo mkdir /media/USERNAME

# assign the folder to my user
sudo chown USERNAME.USERNAME /media/USERNAME

This did not work for me. I am still receiving the following error:
Adding read ACL for uid 1000 to `/media/molly' failed: Operation not supported

I am unsure of how to use fstab to correct, so I have not attempted that
fix.

[Bug 896595] Re: Ubuntu does not remember LID brightness

2012-11-11 Thread Christopher Kyle Horton
I can confirm having run into this bug on my Toshiba Satellite
A505-S6960 under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and after installing Ubuntu 12.10 over
it. It's a big battery drain and I have to keep turning the brightness
down manually after logging in; it's very annoying.

[Bug 1077696] [NEW] mounted samba share stops working for file access

2012-11-11 Thread AndreK
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.10 - same problem when acessing SMB shares from two computers
same for shares both on Ubuntu 12.10 server, and a windows server.

Reproduce;
it helps if you play a video/movie using vlc or mplayer from share. the file
should be open for hours. (use pause)
- when unpaused, the file will play fine.
-no new big files on that share will open, small files may work.
unmounting + remounting the SMB share may fixe the problem, but other
processes may be affected:
VLC - while stuck with such samba problem, is impossible to kill, same for
smplayer
sudo killall vlc -s KILL
.. will not kill it.
and so unmounting the share takes 10 attempts..

[Bug 1048059] Re: Adding ACLs to /media/$user does not work

2012-11-11 Thread David Shochat
Molly, You do understand that the directory to be created under /media should
be named molly in your case (i.e., sudo mkdir /media/molly), right? Not
USERNAME literally.
Also, I noticed on my laptop, which does not have this bug, the directory
(/media/david in my case) did not exist initially, but was created
automatically the first time I plugged in a USB storage device after upgrading
to 12.10. Also, it is owned by root, so maybe the instruction to chown it is
unnecessary.

[Bug 964270] Re: Ubuntu forgets keyboard shortcuts after a restart

2012-11-11 Thread Chris
For me this bug is annoying because the default shortcut keys do overlap
with the IntelliJ IDEA keys.

If the default keys could use the 'Windows' key instead of Ctrl-Alt I
would be very happy, in that case the default keys would not be used in
any application.

(excuse me for my english..)

would it help if I donated some money to get this bug fixed?

[Bug 1048059] Re: Adding ACLs to /media/$user does not work

2012-11-11 Thread Jan Claeys
Just creating the /media/$USER directory manually was enough for me, I
did not need to chown it.

'/media' is on an ext3 for me

And this system was originally installed with Ubuntu 7.10, and has been
upgraded to every version since (so, there might be leftovers like
different permissions from that), and was upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10
today, after which the issue showed up.

[Bug 796076] Re: When run as root [gksudo gedit whatever] gedit tries to open a 2nd 'untitled document 1'

2012-11-11 Thread Freecore
Temporary SOLUTION:

I've found another workaround. Unfortunately for us this doesn't seems
to be a bug, at least I guess there's no intention from gnome developers
to solve it soon:

A upstream developer said: You shouldn't start GNOME programmes with
elevated privileges, it's not supported. In any case, not a gnome-
terminal bug. It's not just nautilus it's any gnome application with a
GUI.

This can be confirmed according to the upstream of the Nautilus bug,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/805682, at Gnome
bugzilla (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=654184). It's clear
that Gnome developers don't design their programs to be runned as root.

So, since they don't want to support gnome graphical programs as root, it's not
a bug. If you can read more about why they don't support this you can read:
- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1019995

But it IS a problem if we want to start gnome graphical programs as root. So we
need alternative solutions:

- Paddy Landau have created a workaround for it (comment #20) and posted it at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12071894postcount=81.
- You can use alternative applications (like graphical leafpad or vim and nando
in the terminal).
- Running sudo gedit (NOT recommended, graphical programs should be runned with
gksudo or kdesudo)
- The simplest solution I got. (See down).

As Derek White posted in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit/+bug/890041.

$ gedit # opens untitled document
$ gedit /path/to/file # opens file
$ sudo gedit /path/to/file # opens file
$ gksu gedit /path/to/file # opens file untitled document
$ gksudo gedit /path/to/file # opens file untitled document

I figured out that it only happens when you try to gksudo with other
user. For example:

$ gksudo -u userA /path/to/file # Will opens file normally if logged as userA.
$ gksudo /path/to/file # Will also opens normally if you're logged as root
(with sudo -i or something).

But if you are root and try to gksudo with other user it will brings the
untitled document again:

$ gksudo -u UserA /path/to/file # Will opens file untitled document.

So, as long as we are supossed to run graphical applications with
gksudo, the solution is to be logged as root and run gedit with gksudo
(whitout parameters it'll run as root). If you want to do this in one
single line you can do:

$ sudo gksudo gedit /path/to/file # Works perfectly.
$ gksudo gksudo gedit /path/to/file # Works perfectly. I recomend this,
specially if you want to call gedit in a script or something.

That's it!

I wish this can help to devs to deciding fix this problem an support
graphical as root. Or someone else to add the feature to Gnome
applications.

[Bug 1048059] Re: Adding ACLs to /media/$user does not work

2012-11-11 Thread Jan Claeys
So I did have a look at the source of udisks2 (this is in
'udiskslinuxfilesystem.c') and the reason for why this happens as it
does is obvious (the reason WHY the code does it like this is less
obvious to me though...).

If '/media/$USER' does not exist, Udisks 2 checks if '/media' exists and
if not creates it, then it creates '/media/$USER' and if that succeeds,
it tries to set the ACL. If setting the ACL fails, you get the error
from this bug report, and the directory is removed again.

Now, if '/media/$USER' does exist, Udisks does not check or try to set
the ACL, so then you get no error.

My '/' and thus also '/media' are not mounted with ACL support enabled,
so that's why it fails to set the ACL (and why the directory it created
gets removed again).

BTW: I'm not sure why the ACL is needed, as everything seems to work without it.
And I understand even less why they don't check if the ACLs are there in case
the directory already exists? (Do they assume '/media' is always a tmpfs? What
if there is a user named 'cdrom' or the like?)

[Bug 1074453] Re: Doesn't retain custom window shortcut

2012-11-11 Thread Martin Pitt
This sounds like a likely duplicate of bug 1063617. You could try to
install gnome-shell and check if that bug also happens with that; if
not, it's a rather definitive duplicate.

[Bug 964270] Re: Ubuntu forgets keyboard shortcuts after a restart

2012-11-11 Thread Martin Pitt
Please note that gconf-editor is the wrong tool for this in 12.10, as
compiz has been ported to gsettings. This sounds like a likely duplicate
of bug 1063617. You could try to install gnome-shell and check if that
bug also happens with that; if not, it's a rather definitive duplicate.
