[Bug 1074182] [NEW] I set the screen switch to 'never' and it suts off in 10 mins.

2012-11-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In the system settings 'Brightnes and Lock' I have the screen swith set to
'never' and the screen shuts off at 10 minutes. I don't know how to fix the
problem. Before I could set it to an 'hour' then back to 'never' and re-boot
and the screen wouldn't switch off after 10 minutes. Now that doesn't work. I
set the switch to 'never' re-boot and still the screen switches off after 10
minutes.
How do I fix the problem?

[Bug 1082297] [NEW] Wrong permissions when using Save As

2012-11-23 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
===

1. Download a PDF from the internet.
2. When Firefox asks what to do with the file, choose the option to open it in
Evince.
3. Once the PDF is open in Evince, do a File Save as.
4. Observe that the file is created with the permissions 0400.

Correct behavior:
=

Evince should follow the same permissions model as other programs, using
the umask to determine the default permissions, which would be 0644 on a
default Ubuntu machine.

Impact of the bug:
==

Because of the incorrect permissions, it's impossible to directly
overwrite an affected PDF without manually fixing the permissions. It
makes no sense not to give the owner write permission by default, as any
situations where 0400 permissions were desirable would surely be corner
cases.

[Bug 624566] Re: Enhancement: Middle click to close tab (like Firefox)

2012-11-23 Thread Dmitry Kann
I find the reasoning not valid. This would definitely a useful feature,
not closing tabs with a middle click is a de facto standard in almost
all browsers: Firefox, Google Chrome, even Internet Explorer (!)

Having tabs disappear if a user accidentally middle clicks anwhere
inside them is confusing. is not convincing at all. How about
accidental left clicks on the close button (which is WAY more likely
since people switch tabs with left mouse button, and they NEVER use mid
clicks on tabs except for closing). After all, be careful with clicks in
general :)

Moreover, a tab with a modified file would never close without
confirmation.

I'm determined this feature is needed.

[Bug 974208] Re: Wrong filename when restoring from Trash

2012-11-23 Thread Timothy Arceri
I've looked into this one a little more.

The problem is with the code in libnautilus-private/nautilius-file-utilities.c
the function nautilus_restore_files_from_trash()
uses nautilus_file_operations_move()

This moves the files from the trash directory back to the path stored in Trash
Info by passing a destination directory. The problem is there is no destination
filenames given so they end up with the filename used when they were in the
trash directory rather than the original filename.

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity Global Menu

2012-11-23 Thread Aleve Sicofante
Guys: stop discussing the implementation. The design team and the
Ayatana team have all the briefing and are working on this.

There's only one question remaining: WHEN?

This bug was to be solved for 12.04, then 12.10... Mark Shuttleworth
promised well before 12.04 that the default menu behaviour would be
tweakable in the direction this bug shows. I think it's not unfair to
ask for a solid commitment from the devs about the chance of this bug
being solved for 13.04.

So please Mr. John Lea et al: let us know how's this going and what our
reasonable expectactions can be.

[Bug 1082411] [NEW] brasero can not eject medium and process is still running

2012-11-23 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:

There appears to be a bug where-by brasero is unable to eject when it
finishes burning. So I do as it says, and eject manually. I then proceed

Just burned another CD, this time from the terminal and using the debug

[Bug 1024057] Re: gnome control center crashed when attempting to open privacy dialogue

2012-11-23 Thread Margarita Manterola
Hi,

I have been able to reproduce and find the cause of this bug. The bug
is triggered when the file .config/user-dirs.dirs is not present.
Simply move that file away and you'll be able to reproduce this.
Running xdg-user-dirs-update might or might not fix the problem, some
variables might not get set in that case, and if there's one variable
missing, the privacy pane fails.

The bug is actually in the activity-log-manager package. The file src
/files-widget.vala, lines 264-272, says:

  defined_dirs = new HashMapstring, UserDirectory(str_hash, str_equal);
  defined_dirs.set(Environment.get_user_special_dir(UserDirectory.DESKTOP),
UserDirectory.DESKTOP);
  defined_dirs.set(Environment.get_user_special_dir(UserDirectory.DOCUMENTS),
UserDirectory.DOCUMENTS);
  defined_dirs.set(Environment.get_user_special_dir(UserDirectory.DOWNLOAD),
UserDirectory.DOWNLOAD);
  defined_dirs.set(Environment.get_user_special_dir(UserDirectory.MUSIC),
UserDirectory.MUSIC);
  defined_dirs.set(Environment.get_user_special_dir(UserDirectory.PICTURES),
UserDirectory.PICTURES);

defined_dirs.set(Environment.get_user_special_dir(UserDirectory.PUBLIC_SHARE),
UserDirectory.PUBLIC_SHARE);
  defined_dirs.set(Environment.get_user_special_dir(UserDirectory.TEMPLATES),
UserDirectory.TEMPLATES);
  defined_dirs.set(Environment.get_user_special_dir(UserDirectory.VIDEOS),
UserDirectory.VIDEOS);

which gets translated into calls like this one, for example:

_tmp42_ = self-priv-defined_dirs;
_tmp43_ = g_get_user_special_dir (G_USER_DIRECTORY_DOWNLOAD);
gee_abstract_map_set ((GeeAbstractMap*) _tmp42_, _tmp43_,
GINT_TO_POINTER (G_USER_DIRECTORY_DOWNLOAD));

If the userdir file is not present or the variable not defined in it,
the call to g_get_user_special_dir will return null (documented
behaviour), which will make gee_abstract_map_set fail.

The code needs to be reworked to take into account that these dirs might
not be set.

[Bug 880886] Re: Doesn't associated with mnemonic_widget property or accessibility related properties with some preference tool dialogs in GNOME Control Center application

2012-11-23 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Yes, this is still an issue with raring.

The specific example given in the bug description is still broken.
1. Turn on Orca
2. Open System SettingsPower
3. Tab to When the lid is closed. Orca doesn't read On battery power or
When plugged in so I imagine it would be pretty difficult for a blind user to
figure out what those two combo boxes do.

This is a problem with the Ubuntu patch to add the when lid is closed
setting. The GNOME power settings panel has fewer options and therefore
wouldn't be affected.

[Bug 1082519] [NEW] GTK Print dialog needs to support Bonjour broadcasting of remote printers

2012-11-23 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

CUPS upstream dropped the CUPS broadcasting/browsing mechanism to automatically
discover shared remote printers beginning from 1.6.x. Replacement is
Bonjour-based broadcasting odf the shared printers by CUPS and on the client
side the application's print dialogs are responsible for browsing these
broadcasts and listing the remote printers appropriately. CUPS even provides a
library function for that now.

See

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-r-cups-bonjour-
browsing

I wrote there:

--
The CUPS Browsing/Broadcasting mechanism which made print queues shared on
remote CUPS servers automatically visible for the local CUPS daemon and so for
local applications got dropped upstream from CUPS 1.6.x on. Ubpstream has
replaced this functionality by Bonjour-based broadcasting (under Linux
implemented via Avahi), an OS-indpendent PWG (Printing Working Group) standard,
but this lacks the implementation of browsing on the client side making the
printers on remote CUPS servers not automatically appearing any more.

Ubuntu Quantal's CUPS has a mega patch to forward-port this functionality from
the old CUPS for one cycle, to avoid regressions. We cannot carry such a patch
eternally, and we should follow upstream and the PWG standards.

So in Ubuntu Raring we need the real solution which means that the print
dialogs (upstream-recommended solution) or the CUPS daemon (how I like to have
it) takes the new Bonjour (Avahi) broadcasts to display the shared remote CUPS
queues automatically. The browsing functionality is implemented in the CUPS
library (libcups) from CUPS 1.6.x on, but there is currently no production code
using these functions.

Upstream expects the print dialogs to use the new library functions for
displaying the new queues. This would require modifications and upstream
submissions for GTK, Qt, and LibreOffice at least and this does not safely
cover all existing applications which have CUPS-aware print dialogs and
therefore listed the remote queues before. Especially printing from the command
line would not be covered.

The better approach would be modifying the CUPS daemon so that it uses the new
library function to find the remote queues and advertize them like its own
local queues. Where the CUPS daemon needs to be patched for that we could
probably derive from Quantal's CUPS Broadcasting/Browsing forward port patch.
The new Bonjour browsing patch being based on the new standard way of Bonjour
broadcasting has probably good chances to be accepted upstream.

This feature does not only prevent a regression, but it also helps to more
easily access printers connected to Mac OS X machines (they broadcasted
Bonjour-only all the time) and also for mobile Ubuntu devices. Usually you do
not have connected printers to tablets or phones and you carry them around
between different local networks, so here it is especially important that they
automatically pick up the print queues in the local network.
--

Such a patch to the CUPS daemon or an extra daemon to do the browsing and
add/remove queues appropriately in the local CUPS environment is also not the
best solution but a way to avoid regressions with legacy apps.

The real intention from upstream is that all print dialogs browse the print
queues available on the local network via Bonjour (under Linux implemented by
Avahi), where print queues on the local network are CUPS queues from Linux and
Mac OS X but also IPP printers which broadcast themselves via Bonjour (IPP
Everywhere printers). Printing on iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)
already works this way. These devices do not allow the setup of local queues at
all and they discovcer available print queues via Bonjour.

For this the CUPS library has even special functions, see as sample code the
program

cups/testcups.c

to be called as follows:

cups/testcups enum 1

enum makes it enumerating printers and the number is the number of seconds to
Bonjour-browse for network printers.

The library function is the function cupsEnumDests() in cups/dest.c. For
Bonjour browsing it must be called with a non-zero value for the msec
parameter.

This feature in the print dialogs is VERY urgent because:

- This is how CUPS upstream and also the PWG (Printing Working Group,
  http://www.pwg.org/) expects how network printing with automatic
  queue discovery works.

- This is less resource-consuming on mobile devices which do not have
  local print queues. avahi-daemon is running anyway and the CUPS
  daemon does not need to be running when there are no local queues.

- CUPS upstream would not most probably not accept patches on the CUPS
  daemon to browse for Bonjour-advertized queues and let them appear
  like local queues.

[Bug 762670] Re: Laptop brightness on Dell XPS not controllable

2012-11-23 Thread Bjarne Kristensen
I have a DELL XPS L702X laptop with the nVidia GTX 555M 3GB RAM with the
120Hz 3D Screen.

I use Ubuntu 12.10 32-bit with the Experimental NVIDIA binary Xorg
driver from nvidia-experimental-310(proprietary).

Thanks to all the comments, I got my Fn+F4/F5 brightness working aswell.

Though I did not have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to put the settings in,
I created it manually using

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and added only this:

Section Screen
 Identifier Default Screen
 Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1
EndSection

and saved the file.

I rebooted the system, and now the keys work.

I hope the issue gets resolved at some point.

Thanks again from a new Ubuntu user.
