[Bug 1084045] Re: raring startup applications don't work after latest update
Thanks for looking at this bug. I did edit by copy and paste from an exec that works to add the commands for example sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid LAUREL which works fine from the xterminal and did work from startup applications. The reason for this command is the automatic connection on raring automatically disconnects hidden wireless WPA which is another bug #1017738. Hardware works fine on 12.04.1 both 12.10 and 13.04 have nm problem connecting to hidden wireless on boot. Since it didn't work from startup I issue it from terminal and works fine. Now that iwconfig works fine from terminal and did work from startup applications. I've verified the entry several times. Is there any way to verify that the startup applications are ever issued? The other startup command entered by edit by copy and paste from an exec that works into startup commands: xrandr --newmode 1366x768_60.00 85.25 1366 1440 1576 1784 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsync the reason for this is the vga external monitor where there's no way for ubuntu to know what the resolution should be. Again this was working from startup on raring until the latest updates. Since it didn't work from startup I issue it from terminal and works fine. Attached is xsession-errors. Some usual unity complaints no failures. ** Attachment added: .xsession-errors https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/1084045/+attachment/3447928/+files/xsession-errors -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1084045 Title: raring startup applications don't work after latest update To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/1084045/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 952771] Re: Gnome Screensaver should handle expired password tokens
** Description changed: Gnome Screensaver should handle expired password tokens. Currently it does not. It just unlocks screen, so in case you're using kerberos - your credentials cache stays expired and you need to manually change your password or logout and then login again (lightdm, gdm, etc. do handle expired password tokens). Actually, there is a mainstream bugreport with patch solving the problem, but it seems noone is interested in solving this issue: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=648875 The patch provided by Brian C. Huffman solves the issue and is compatible with today's GS behavior (it can be emulated using special pam config, see comment 9 there). Both solutions using this patch (with and without passwd required pam_permit.so) tested by me with oneiric's gnome-screensaver-3.2.0-ubuntu1 and work as expected. - This is really nice improvement for big corporate environments. So, It would be nice to apply this patch even if it's not in upstream - yet. + + [Impact] + Gnome-screensaver doesn't handle expired credentials. If user's account password must be changed (e.g. expired), when unlocking screen, gnome-screensaver doesn't suggest to change the password. This behavior rises two problems: + 1) security: user can unlock screen and get access even if it's password has expired; + 2) usability: if kerberos authentication is used, then credentials cache stays expired, so user can't access kerberized services until password is changed manually. + Since precise LTS is used widely in corporate environments (with krb5 auth), backporting to it would be useful. + + [Test Case] + 1) Configure gnome-screensaver to lock screen and require password to login (gnome-control-center - Brightness and Lock) + 2) Configure pam to use krb5/sss/winbind authentication against any KDC that supports password expiration; + 3) login with normal (not expired) account (using lightdm/gdm/anotherdm); + 4) mark this account's password as expired (or 'must change') somehow (depends on KDC you're using); + 5) lock screen; + 6) unlock screen with you password. You will not be asked to change your password; + 7) try to access any kerberized service (http-proxy/samba/ssh), since credentials cache is expired - access will be denied. + + [Regression Potential] + Fixing a bug with provided patch (raring) changes behavior on unlocking with expired password. If we need to save current behavior as default, then we should use new /etc/pam.d/gnome-screensaver (see comment #4 debdiff). ** Description changed: Gnome Screensaver should handle expired password tokens. [Bug 1084387] Re: empathy sort
One contact is online (a cousin on mom's side). She is not at the top of the list. The list is alphabetical. As I recall, icons representing people who sent messages used to flash and move to the top of the list until I read them. I'd like this behavior restored. I didn't see anything in the preferences-configuration to make such a setting obvious. We use instant messaging to communicate at work (I'm a work-from-home consultant). I maintain a sliver of empathy contact list mapped to all my screens (sticky) and on-top of other windows. That's a lot of screen space to allocate for a program that's not working as I hope. I often must mute my speakers, I don't always watch my screen for visual notification. (I sometimes sleep.) Whereas the notifications used to be passive---I'd peripherally see flashing, the notifications are active. Now I have to actively search the list. Also, you might say that the little green light flashes by unread messages. But with a only a sliver of screen space I like to see the names of people. Their icons, not the little exes and ohs and question marks. Thank you. (It occurs to me I could install an old version of empathy. Maybe.) ** Attachment added: screenshot of empathy on-screen display https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/1084387/+attachment/3448061/+files/empathy.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1084387 Title: empathy sort To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/1084387/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 861171] Re: Shutdown from greeter does nothing when multiple accounts open
It's a toss-up: the current behavior is mysterious, but the proposed behavior would be vexatious. Ubuntu would be telling you that the other accounts need to log out, but refusing to offer to do that. I don't feel strongly about whether it should require admin-only authentication or any-user authentication. The important thing is to have a confirmation step making it clear that forcing logouts of other users is Serious Business. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/861171 Title: Shutdown from greeter does nothing when multiple accounts open To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-session/+bug/861171/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 861171] Re: Shutdown from greeter does nothing when multiple accounts open
I agree that there isn't much point in limiting who should be able to shut down the machine when accounts are logged in, when the user has access to the power button anyway. I feel that any user should always have the opportunity to cleanly shut down the machine via the GUI, not allowing that is a big usability issue. Ubuntu should first warn that other users are logged in, and the offer to shut down anyway, regardless of their account status. For a more long-term goal, it would be nice if ubuntu offered to log the accounts out for you, and in doing so saved the sessions of the logged in accounts, so no work is lost when the machine is shut down, but it would probably require a lot of work to make that a possibility. In the mean time, simply giving a clear warning that work will be lost if the machine is shut down while users are logged in, and then letting the user click shutdown is sufficient.

Re: [Bug 861171] Re: Shutdown from greeter does nothing when multiple accounts open
What about this use case - I am logged in as an administrator - Suddenly, my brother next to me asks to log in to check his mails for 3 minutes. - I move to the other room while he is logged (switched to another session) in to a Standard session (mine is still on). When I am back, I find the machine shut down. What the heck? No... To sum it up, when multiple accounts are logged in, Ubuntu should allow only ADMINS accounts to force the Shutdown operation or the Standard user if he/she has the SHUTDOWN privilege. The only requirement is that a Warning box should be displayed (Other Accounts' sessions are still open, are you sure you want to shutdown anyway?). That's a preventive way to see the issue from an end-user side. --- On Fri, Nov 30, 2012 at 6:02 PM, Marc Deslauriers marc.deslauri...@canonical.com wrote: With a graphical login, not neccessarily. Here's another scenario: A laptop is shared by multiple members of a household. User A is the admin, User B is not. User B steps up to laptop with the intention of shutting it down to leave with it. User A is currently logged in. We have two choices here: 1- Present a warning dialog to User B saying that shutting down the laptop may cause User A to lose unsaved data in open applications, but allow him to shut the laptop down anyway. 2- Present an error message saying an admin is required to shut the machine down, at which point User B simply turns the machine off with the power button, and causes disk corruption.

I just wrote a simple test program (attached) to try and replicate the code path where the file is copied and it results in a file with 664 permissions.
