Re: [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2013-01-04 Thread Sam Spilsbury
Not likely. Adding the invisible window borders to metacity's
non-composited mode is likely a nontrivial affair.

ah, thanks for that hint which explains while this bug is still on confirmed

lets see then if unity-2d ever will be fixed =)

 Bug description:
   *

This should mostly be fixed for Natty and might get backported to
   earlier releases as well.

For Precise (12.04) this is again broken for unity-2d (as of 17.7.2012
 unity-2d 5.12.0-0ubuntu1.1).
Note that if the window has a scrollbar, you can grab that to resize the
window. If not, you are stuck with the 1px border. Workaround: NONE KNOWN
 (see comment 320)?

   *

   *Blueprint for Natty, Ubuntu 11.04:

   https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection-
   dx-n-resizing-windows

   Work items1 * Make sure the new resize grip fits in current applications;
doesn't interfere with anything. We should make some noise about this during
the Natty cycle so people keep their eyes open and file bugs.
2 * Invisible window resize area - around 3px invisible area to allow
 resize on all sides.

   *

Working grip backported to gtk2 already available in ppa :
   https://launchpad.net/~bratsche/+archive/gtk

   *

   Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-
theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as
   desired:

   distance name=left_width value=3/
   distance name=right_width value=3/
   distance name=bottom_height value=3/

   Binary package hint: metacity

   - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens
for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted
by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in
Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in
all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have
open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The
result is that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window
border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window
altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an
invisible region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick
that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or
perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System
Preferences Windows dialog (although the default thickness should
still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have
a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application
controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity
   team).

I tried to start afresh with gtkpodder (deleting the podcasts files and
episodes) , then ran rhythmbox again ... no change.

When unplugged, my Ipod (16G) shows a blank list ... But the images of
all the podcasts I tried to sync appear below. Weird. It's a shame
images can't speak, isn't it ?

[Bug 1035799] Re: show offline contacts is missing

2013-01-04 Thread Ari
The option in settings dialog was available in earlier versions, but I'm
really missing the on click entry in the menu. It's really annoying to
change settings to show offline contacts, send a message to the contact
and after that go to settings again and hide offline contacts.

Empathy user experience goes from bad to worse with every gnome-shell
version.

[Bug 30969] Re: monitor suspends regardless of gnome-power-manager timeouts

2013-01-04 Thread rhayman
Update - something in the upgrade from Maverick to Natty appears to be
the culprit for me. Good thing I made a complete backup prior to this
upgrade.

I used the Alternate CD ISO to upgrade to Natty since the online Natty
repository wasn't available..

Then I immediately used the online distribution upgrade to upgrade to
Oneiric and it was during this install process that the my monitors
first shut down (still running Natty). I updated and upgraded and
distribution upgraded to Precise and when that didn't fix the problem, I
did the same to Quantal. That still didn't solve the problem.

Since I spent the better part of a week screwing with this problem and
never getting it fixed, I had to trash that entire system.

A fresh install of Precise on that same hardware did not have the
problem. Clearly this bug is a huge upgrade blunder.

[Bug 1067876] Re: [quantal] Missing Safely Remove Drive and Eject options from Quicklists. Only have Unmount.

2013-01-04 Thread tecknomage
Jan,

The won't fix decision is not by users and IMHO is bogus. Ubuntu
12.04 had the 'Safely Remove' feature and it worked. 'They *removed* it
in 12.10 version.

'They' are also saying that Windoz CAN have the feature but Ubuntu
cannot, which is BS.

By the way, I've tried Linux Mint and SUSE and both had the feature.

[Bug 1033204] Re: bluetooth-sendto crashed with SIGSEGV in handle_method_call()

2013-01-04 Thread Timokl
I can confirm this error when I try to send a file via bluetooth to my
phone (HTC Desire S) and my tablet (Nexus 7). Also, I cannot send files
from my mobile devices to my Ubuntu 12.04 box. There's no reaction on
Ubuntu. All devices are paired with each other.

However, I did not have my computer crash when using Bluetooth.

[Bug 304345] Re: File chooser dialog doesn't provide network access

2013-01-04 Thread Timothy Arceri
@amay82

No need to be a smart arse. I don't get paid to fix Ubuntu bugs I just
volunteer my time to fixing some bugs here and there its my way of
giving back to the project. The upstream patch is just waiting on the
upstream developer getting back from holidays, he has promised me he
would review my patch when he gets back.

If your not going to make a constructive comment please don't make one
at all.

[Bug 1096144] [NEW] gedit crashes with syntax highlighting of Defaults

2013-01-04 Thread Jacob Young
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.10 gedit version 3.6.1-0ubuntu1

Gedit crashes with syntax highlighting of Defaults selected in a non-
empty document. Not sure what is supposed to happen, but I often select
it accidentally by simply clicking on the syntax highlighting selection
box. When this happened on a saved document, gedit remembered the
selection and crashed every time I opened that file.

Steps to reproduce (in any order):
 - Select syntax highlighting Defaults
 - Type anything into the document

Standard Error Output:
GtkSourceView:ERROR:gtksourcecontextengine.c:5421:update_syntax: assertion
failed: (state-context != NULL)

[Bug 885989] Re: white screen on second monitor when using two xsessions

2013-01-04 Thread Paul Gortmaker
Confirmed locally that the patch fixes the white-screen-of-death problem
on 12.10/quantal.

Is the upstream approval absolutely required here? The objection
(seems a bit simple...) is rather vague, and Alberts above has
essentially shown that it is in fact one per screen anyway, making the
objection even more dubious.

Given that it impacts many users, and has been confimed as a workable
fix many times independently, I don't see why it isn't simply added to
the build and integrated locally, independent of the aged criticism from
two years ago that blocked the patch. That would seem to be the
pragmatic approach here.

Did not tried to disable auto-login, so I don't know whether it would

culprit.

[Bug 433500] Re: gvfsd memory leak

2013-01-04 Thread Landis
thank you all, for telling us that gvfsd is part of fuse (fuseiso).
i didn't like how much cpu time gvfsd-metadata was using.
Also, i didn't find fuse of any use. i installed it trying to mount an iso as a
dvd and it Didn't work for that.
i could already mount an iso as a directory (folder), so fuse was once again,
useless.
i had problems with fuse in the past messing up my mount table and moving
mounts out of order
( it would try and mount a drive in a folder before the drive that contained
the folder was mounted... )
fuse sucked back then, it sucks now .
fuse / fuseiso / gvfsd-* is now gone and my memory / cpu usage is back to
norm...

thanks again,
Landis.

[Bug 1096251] Re: would like to upgrade ubuntu to current version

2013-01-04 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I actually upgraded a computer two weeks ago from Ubuntu 10.10 using
update-manager so I'm pretty sure it works. The supported path requires
you to update to 11.04 and then to 11.10 and finally to 12.04 LTS.

Even though 11.04 is no longer supported either, it's ok. Since Ubuntu
11.10 is only supported for a few more months, you should upgrade to
12.04 LTS.

[Bug 1096272] [NEW] Format Volume Encrypted (LUKS + Ext4) crashes gnome-disks

2013-01-04 Thread martinsp
Public bug reported:

After freshly installing Lubuntu 12.10, while attempting to format an
encrypted USB drive with LUKS+Ext4 using gnome-disks from gnome-disk-
utility (3.6.1-0ubuntu1) package.

Crash occurs when providing the passphrase.

Output on terminal:
/var/cache/cracklib/cracklib_dict.pwd.gz: No such file or directory

Installing cracklib-runtime (2.8.19-1) package solved the problem.

Seems like a package dependency issue.

Thank you.

[Bug 1096283] [NEW] Installing Nautilus in Xubuntu 12.10 pulls in Redundant Packages as Dependencies

2013-01-04 Thread Leo H
Public bug reported:

Nautilus (nautilus 1:3.5.90.really.3.4.2-0ubuntu4.1) – when installed
under under Xubuntu 12.10 using Synaptic – directly or indirectly pulls
in Brasero, Zeitgeist and other application packages as dependencies.

― These additional packages such as Brasero and Zeitgeist are not
requested nor required, only the file browser/manager Nautilus itself
is.

― Further, these extra packages provide no essential or indispensable
functionality to Nautilus itself. Nautilus is complete in itself as a
file browser/manager. (The installation is on a series of some 100
netbooks which by their very design never have CD/DVD drives.)

― Zeitgeist, moreover, is a Stasi-like service — covertly and
comprehensively snooping on, logging and chanelling information on user
activities and events. As such, the presence of Zeitgeist is highly
undesirable on professional Linux systems designed to be transparent in
their behaviour, well-controlled and secure against information leakage.

Superfluous dependencies not only result in wasted space and resources
allocated to such undesired and undesirable packages.

But this bug also concerns a core design principle: Linux packages
should only be included as dependencies when they provide essential or
indispensable functionality to the package that is actually and
deliberately selected for installation.

These redundant dependencies should therefore be removed from the
Nautilus package.

[Bug 1096283] Re: Installing Nautilus in Xubuntu 12.10 pulls in Redundant Packages as Dependencies

2013-01-04 Thread Dave Lentz
Can you post the output of this command? (Make sure you press 'N' to cancel
installation if the packages are still unacceptable to you):
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends nautilus

Note that Synaptic has a setting to not pull 'Recommends' packages by
default (the equivalent of the --no-install-recommends argument passed
to apt in the command above). While I personally prefer modularity,
integrating apps (like brasero in nautilus) seems to be all the rage
among bigger desktops (KDE/Gnome) right now.

[Bug 1096301] [NEW] copy and paste from filemanager window using CTRL-C/V choose the wrong file

2013-01-04 Thread gsscoder
Public bug reported:

I run Ubuntu 12.04 64bit in a Sony VAIO with 8gb of RAM.

I've set the filemanager window to display a tree rather than a list.

If a copy and paste files using keys (CTRL-C/V) it easy very easy that I
copy a different file that the intended one.

Using copy from the contextual menu works well instead.

Giacomo
