Re: [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult
Not likely. Adding the invisible window borders to metacity's non-composited mode is likely a nontrivial affair. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as desired: distance name=left_width value=3/ distance name=right_width value=3/ distance name=bottom_height value=3/ Binary package hint: metacity - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The result is that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an invisible region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System Preferences Windows dialog (although the default thickness should still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity team). [Bug 30969] Re: monitor suspends regardless of gnome-power-manager timeouts
Update - something in the upgrade from Maverick to Natty appears to be the culprit for me. Good thing I made a complete backup prior to this upgrade. I used the Alternate CD ISO to upgrade to Natty since the online Natty repository wasn't available.. Then I immediately used the online distribution upgrade to upgrade to Oneiric and it was during this install process that the my monitors first shut down (still running Natty). I updated and upgraded and distribution upgraded to Precise and when that didn't fix the problem, I did the same to Quantal. That still didn't solve the problem. Since I spent the better part of a week screwing with this problem and never getting it fixed, I had to trash that entire system. A fresh install of Precise on that same hardware did not have the problem. [Bug 885989] Re: white screen on second monitor when using two xsessions
Confirmed locally that the patch fixes the white-screen-of-death problem on 12.10/quantal. Is the upstream approval absolutely required here? The objection (seems a bit simple...) is rather vague, and Alberts above has essentially shown that it is in fact one per screen anyway, making the objection even more dubious. Given that it impacts many users, and has been confimed as a workable fix many times independently, I don't see why it isn't simply added to the build and integrated locally, independent of the aged criticism from two years ago that blocked the patch. [Bug 433500] Re: gvfsd memory leak
thank you all, for telling us that gvfsd is part of fuse (fuseiso). i didn't like how much cpu time gvfsd-metadata was using. Also, i didn't find fuse of any use. i installed it trying to mount an iso as a dvd and it Didn't work for that. i could already mount an iso as a directory (folder), so fuse was once again, useless. i had problems with fuse in the past messing up my mount table and moving mounts out of order ( it would try and mount a drive in a folder before the drive that contained the folder was mounted... ) fuse sucked back then, it sucks now . fuse / fuseiso / gvfsd-* is now gone and my memory / cpu usage is back to norm... thanks again, Landis. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gvfs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433500 Title: gvfsd memory leak To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/433500/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1096251] Re: would like to upgrade ubuntu to current version
I actually upgraded a computer two weeks ago from Ubuntu 10.10 using update-manager so I'm pretty sure it works. The supported path requires you to update to 11.04 and then to 11.10 and finally to 12.04 LTS. Even though 11.04 is no longer supported either, it's ok. Since Ubuntu 11.10 is only supported for a few more months, you should upgrade to 12.04 LTS. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to yelp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1096251 Title: would like to upgrade ubuntu to current version To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/yelp/+bug/1096251/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1096283] [NEW] Installing Nautilus in Xubuntu 12.10 pulls in Redundant Packages as Dependencies
Public bug reported: Nautilus (nautilus 1:3.5.90.really.3.4.2-0ubuntu4.1) – when installed under under Xubuntu 12.10 using Synaptic – directly or indirectly pulls in Brasero, Zeitgeist and other application packages as dependencies. ― These additional packages such as Brasero and Zeitgeist are not requested nor required, only the file browser/manager Nautilus itself is. ― Further, these extra packages provide no essential or indispensable functionality to Nautilus itself. Nautilus is complete in itself as a file browser/manager. (The installation is on a series of some 100 netbooks which by their very design never have CD/DVD drives.) ― Zeitgeist, moreover, is a Stasi-like service — covertly and comprehensively snooping on, logging and chanelling information on user activities and events. As such, the presence of Zeitgeist is highly undesirable on professional Linux systems designed to be transparent in their behaviour, well-controlled and secure against information leakage. Superfluous dependencies not only result in wasted space and resources allocated to such undesired and undesirable packages. But this bug also concerns a core design principle: Linux packages should only be included as dependencies when they provide essential or indispensable functionality to the package that is actually and deliberately selected for installation. These redundant dependencies should therefore be removed from the Nautilus package. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Information type changed from Private Security to Public -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1096283 Title: Installing Nautilus in Xubuntu 12.10 pulls in Redundant Packages as Dependencies To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1096283/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Can you post the output of this command? (Make sure you press 'N' to cancel installation if the packages are still unacceptable to you): sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends nautilus Note that Synaptic has a setting to not pull 'Recommends' packages by default (the equivalent of the --no-install-recommends argument passed to apt in the command above).
