[Bug 1133663] Re: Extract Here fails to preserve timestamps for non-empty folders

2013-09-04 Thread Ernie 07
Another data point.

In addition to failing via the right click extract here menu, the CLI
file-roller -h command produces the same failure.

[Bug 1220550] [NEW] gnome-keyring resets password

2013-09-04 Thread Martin Vysny
Public bug reported:

Good day :)
I have Ubuntu installed on an encrypted LVM partition, with user auto-login and
an empty gnome-keyring password (I believe that an empty gnome-keyring password
on an encrypted LVM is safe... is it? :). Every 5th or 6th boot (I don't know
exact number) the gnome-keyring dialog pops out and asks me for a password. It
no longer accepts empty password. I tried to set the password to some non-empty
string (a or something like that), it again worked for several boots, then
again started to ask for the password. I have to enter the user's password for
the dialog to disappear. So it seems to me that something is (randomly?)
resetting the gnome-keyring password to match the login password.
Thanks and have a nice day!

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-09-04 Thread Jimmy Newtron
Looking forward to see this thing fixed too.

It's just insane that a bug that made people install alternative
packages just to get rid of a tiny new feature is not considered a
ultra-super-high priority on Ubuntu teams.

I'm using Ubuntu for years, and this is the most annoying thing I've
ever noticed since Unity was introduced. At first, I found myself
cursing Ubuntu for that sudden UI change, but Unity made its way and now
I really like it. I don't think the same gonna happen with this damn
search thing.

Nautilus browsing is just useless right now! I prefer Ctrl+Alt+T, cd
to/a/path, and nautilus . instead of touch my mouse or insanely
arrow-navigate to do so. I would try to fix it myself if I knew C++ =/

Please, pleease call Mark to dev's room and ask him for a Nautilus
browsing experience. I'm sure it would hate Nautilus as we do right
now.

[Bug 1219486] Re: FFe: Update gnome-settings-daemon to 3.8.4

2013-09-04 Thread Iain Lane
Do you have a list of the remaining trivial Unity issues? I'm sorry
nobody has helped you out on this yet; it's not for lack of caring but
you'll understand that we have been a bit focused on touch stuff this
cycle, and additionally it's always hard (even for us) to get people to
look at issues that /are going/ to happen in the future when they aren't
a problem now.

If you have such a list I can try and ask Unity guys to take a look.

I'm minded to accept this FFe (after going over the issues you've
noticed) given that you have undertaken to care for any issues that pop
up.

[Bug 1212621] Re: Duplex option disappearing in the GTK print dialog

2013-09-04 Thread Zwylicht
When first choosing A4-Borderless I can still select fast-draft and
duplex. When printed, the options vanish until I rechange to A4 and
print. Printing is always okay and working. Printing PDFs in firefox
works always with that configuration (fast-draft, A4-borderless,
duplex). Okular can do it as well. So that is no cups-problem and it is
no printer problem.

2013-09-04 Thread Alfred Daw
To fix the problems this fix causes on XChat, go to Settings - Advanced -
Keyboard Shortcuts.
Add new - Highlight the net entry (at the bottom) - Mod = Ctrl, Key = l, Data
1 = /clear and the drop down box should be set to Run Command.
(If you want this to also work on ctrl+L, add one with an L rather than an l,
too.)

[Bug 1219337] Re: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo.

2013-09-04 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Only administrators can change the local time without authenticating.
Regular non-administrative users cannot. This allows administrative
users travelling with laptops to change the timezone without getting an
authentication prompt.

Your attack vector assumes that an administrative user is going to leave
an open session unattended. If that is the case, there are a whole slew
of attacks that are possible, and don't require changing the date. For
example, creating scripts in ~/bin that are higher in the path then
system binaries.

If you have administrative users that are leaving session unlocked, you
have a more serious security issue than being able to change the time.

Since your local security policy is different than what is shipped in a
general purpose operating system, I suggest:

1- Requiring your administrative users to lock their workstation when they are
left unattended.
2- Requiring your administrative users to use sudo -k to forcibly invalidate
cached credentials.
3- Removing the policykit-desktop-privileges package, or overriding the policy
with a local one.
4- Disabling ntp, or setting up ntp authentication.
5- Setting a firmware password on local machines.

The SDK must not be creating the GApplication object with a well-known

[Bug 1219337] Re: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo.

2013-09-04 Thread Mark Smith
This allows administrative users travelling with laptops to change the
timezone without getting an authentication prompt.

Why is saving the traveling admin from typing their password a couple of
times a day worth compromising security for everyone else? No,
seriously. Why?

Your attack vector assumes that an administrative user is going to leave an
open session unattended.

Yes, my assumption is that users will forget to lock their machines,
because it happens all the time. This is especially true if it's a
personal machine, and they are the ONLY user.

If that is the case, there are a whole slew of attacks that are possible, and
don't require changing the date. For example, creating scripts in ~/bin that
are higher in the path then system binaries.

Even if that number is high, that's no excuse. Is your stance really
Well, they could compromise security 100 ways, so what's one more?
Plus, how many of those attacks require 0 external resources, and
creating 0 additional files on the system, and would leave little trace
beyond a hiccup in the time/date?

Since your local security policy is different than what is shipped in a
general purpose operating system...

Wanting a slightly more secure system is more of an edge case than changing the
time zone repeatedly? REALLY?
Does Windows 8 count as general purpose to you? It requires escalation to
change the date and time. Maybe their escalation system isn't very good, but
it's still better than blithely letting admins change the system time without
so much as a prompt. Also, their security system doesn't rely on file
timestamps, so it's less likely to grant someone root access.

1- Requiring your administrative users to lock their workstation when they
 are left unattended.

People make mistakes. Are you telling me you've NEVER forgotten to lock
your workstation? You've NEVER seen another admin forget to lock theirs?

2- Requiring your administrative users to use sudo -k to forcibly
 invalidate cached credentials.

That only works on a per pty/tty basis on ubuntu. It only invalidates
one of the sessions, and it invalidates it by changing the timestamp
to a date to Dec. 31, 1969 or Jan. 1, 1970. You could try sudo -K,
which deletes the file, but again only on a per pty/tty basis.

3- Removing the policykit-desktop-privileges package, or overriding the
 policy with a local one.

Oh good, more administrative work, all to save typing a password! Pity
about all the users who don't know what policykit-desktop-privileges is
or does though...

4- Disabling ntp, or setting up ntp authentication.

Disabling ntp wouldn't help, since the whole point is that the user can
change the time to anything manually anyhow.

5- Setting a firmware password on local machines.

This doesn't help if they walked away and forgot to lock their machines.

I especially love how #2 requires the user to remember to execute a command
before they close their terminal, and adds an extra 7 keystrokes PER TTY/PTY.
All this to save a hypothetical traveling admin from having to type his
password once when he moves to a different timezone. If they want to save
themselves a few keystrokes to change the timezone, let /them/ change policy
kit. Don't stick every unsuspecting user with a security hole.

[Bug 1220764] [NEW] Rhythmbox does not add VBR headers when ripping CDs to MP3

2013-09-04 Thread bmaupin
Public bug reported:

When ripping CDs to MP3 using Rhythmbox, by default they are VBR,
because this is the default preset that is used in
/usr/share/gstreamer-0.10/presets/GstLameMP3Enc.prs (cbr=false). The
problem is that the VBR headers aren't added to the MP3 files, for
example:

$ mp3val 01\ -\ Gregory\ Alan\ Isakov\ -\ Dandelion\ Wine.mp3
Analyzing file 01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3...
WARNING: /home/bmaupin/Desktop/Gregory Alan Isakov/This Empty Northern
Hemisphere/01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3: VBR detected, but no
VBR header is present. Seeking may not work properly.
INFO: /home/bmaupin/Desktop/Gregory Alan Isakov/This Empty Northern
Hemisphere/01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3: 9559 MPEG frames
(MPEG 1 Layer III), +ID3v2, no VBR header
Done!

This causes most programs to report incorrect track lengths, including
Rhythmbox itself and Ubuntu's default Nautilus file manager. This seems
to be a huge oversight considering this is the default behavior using
the default apps. I'm not sure when this started because I only use the
LTS versions of Ubuntu, but I know it wasn't a problem in 10.04, because
it was using a gstreamer pipeline with xingmux as opposed to gstreamer
presets, which from what I understand don't support xingmux (which I
believe adds the VBR headers).

I currently have to fix any MP3s that I generate with Rhythmbox like so:

sudo apt-get install vbrfix
cd /path/to/mp3s
find . -type f -iname '*.mp3' -exec vbrfix {} {} \;
rm vbrfix.log vbrfix.tmp

OK, approved location-service. The only remaining issue is bug 1219164,
which will be fixed before 13.10.

(The effect of the bug is that the user isn't prompted when apps -- that
apparmor allows to access location info -- request to access it.
Location-service just assumes the user wants to allow it.)

[Bug 1069531] Re: Cannot login to Empathy after setting up Google online account

2013-09-04 Thread cserpell
I have the same bug, using Ubuntu 13.04. Killing signonpluginprocess
fixes the issue temporarily. After a disconnection, it doesn't come back
online. I have two accounts: Google (without 2-step verification), and a
facebook account. Sometimes only one fails. Why is it so random?
Removing the accounts and adding them again also works, but it is a
pain.

This affects Ubuntu image.

Maybe it is a problem of signond package? Has someone debugged into why
this happens?

Does it happen with any other program than empathy?

[Bug 1220953] [NEW] Legal Notice refers to Privacy panel instead of Security Privacy panel

2013-09-04 Thread Doug Smythies
Public bug reported:

This issue actually is in two identical files in two spots. The files
are just one very long line.

Files:
/usr/share/gnome-control-center/searchingthedashlegalnotice.html
/usr/share/unity/icons/searchingthedashlegalnotice.html

Package to place this bug found via (a method I found on another bug report):
dpkg -S /usr/share/gnome-control-center/searchingthedashlegalnotice.html
gnome-control-center-data:
/usr/share/gnome-control-center/searchingthedashlegalnotice.html
dpkg -S /usr/share/unity/icons/searchingthedashlegalnotice.html
libunity-core-6.0-7: /usr/share/unity/icons/searchingthedashlegalnotice.html

As I understand things (which may be incorrect) the Privacy panel
within system settings has had a name change to the Security and
Privacy panel for 13.10. So two spots in those two files need to be
updated.

From:

...The Privacy panel can be found in your System Settings or via a dash
search

and

... To do this go to the Privacy panel and toggle the ...

To:

[Bug 1220973] [NEW] Unable to change MAC-address for wireless adapter(s)

2013-09-04 Thread David
Public bug reported:

Am having no issues making MAC-address changes to a wired adapter, only
to the wireless adapters.

Have replicated problem on two PCs (Ubuntu 13.04, updated as of Sept 5
2013). On both PCs, have tried two wireless adapters, one internal, the
other USB. Same result.

On one PC, the internal wireless presents as 'eth1' and the USB as
'wlan0'. On the second, the internal presents as 'wlan0' and the USB
as 'wlan1'. But same result.

Problem occurs when using either Macchanger (GNU MAC changer v1.5.0) or
sudo ifconfig wlan0 down / sudo ifconfig wlan0 hw ether
xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx in Terminal. Macchanger gives error Can't change
MAC: interface up or not permission: Invalid argument, while Terminal
gives error SIOCSIFHWADDR: Invalid argument. Same on both PCs.

I note the similarity to Bug #1180929, reported on on 2013-05-16. Reports also
appear in Ubuntu forums at:
 - ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2158910
 - ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2145828

Network-manager version is 0.9.8.0-0ubuntu6

2013-09-04 Thread Scott
Hm...then I remember that one thing I did to try solving the problem
before was un-installing evolution. So I re-installed it and now that
checkbox IS there. However, after un-checking it and restarting my
computer, the notification still comes up :(

Sigh

It never randomly comes up for it. It ALWAYS comes up when I restart
my computer. After cancelling it, it never comes up again until I
restart the computer. That's why I ignored it for so long, but I just
can't anymore. Too annoying.
