[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.
@Sebastien: I tried to refrain from commenting on this aspect, but it indeed made me think a lot. On one hand, I totally agree with you (myself also being a developer/contributor to open source). On the other hand, I share the frustration of many users, and I'm also quite disappointed on how such a complex and crucial bug could be slipped into a release and I share their opinion that the progress is way slower than it should be. Is there a way you could please point me to documentation/guidelines how such bugs could slip into the distro, how such bugreports and prioritized/handled, what kind of QA process lets a distro ship with such a bug, whether the QA process will be revised to make sure such critical bug can't go into the distro in the future? I'd like to be sure that it's safe for me to stay with Ubuntu, but if there'll be one more release with such a critical bug, I'll just have to look for a different distribution. I'm not trying to offend anyone or criticize anything, but I'd like to know if what Ubuntu is able to offer to me is the best match for what I'm looking for, and right now I'm in serious doubt. In short: are there any *conclusions* drawn from this bug that'll help future Ubuntu releases become better? I can't help to mention that the application I use the most frequently is gnome-terminal, where Ubuntu ships a quite old version, for exactly one reason: updating to a newer one requires shell work (touching /etc/profile or similar) to keep the convenience feature that new tabs open in the working directory of the current tab. Something that shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to solve, and even users can do it for themselves, still the distro couldn't yet solve it. I wonder: if such a trivial and easily workarounded issue is a blocker for a version update of gnome-terminal, how come that totally breaking the keyboard wasn't a blocker for the update of those components??? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1218322 Title: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc. To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1218322/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1247668] Re: NumLock turned off on layout switch
@Sebastian: I firmly disagree with setting Importance: Low. Sure you might say that geez if pressing a key did something else, you can just undo that action, press some magic sequence of keys, and you're okay. No security problem, no data loss (actually I'm not even sure about these)... But for me, this is a bug that's causing a constant high amount of stress. I mean, I hit this once a couple of minutes, each time adding a little bit of frustration for not being able to use the most basic input device that I'm using all the time. Heck, ever since I started using computers, which was the ZX Spectrum almost 30 years ago, through DOS and Windows 95 and other Windowses, and my first Slackware Linux with kernel 2.0 in 1996, sometimes using other non-Linux Unices too, now for the first time ever we've reached a point where certain keys on the keyboard, under certain circumstances, fail to do the only thing that they need to do: emit the correct symbol. If pressing 'A' would, 1 out of 100 times, insert a 'B' instead of 'A', would you say it's low because you can backspace and type it again? I'd say it's critical. I've learned touch typing a long time ago, I'm often looking at a piece of paper of something like that when typing, knowing that the computer does what I'm telling it to do. It's unacceptable if, for the first time ever after using computers for 30 years, I need to verify on the screen that each keypress does indeed what it needs to do. I'd say if, with the NumLock turned on, trying to insert a digit '7' moves the cursor Home instead, it's CRITICAL. It's the very essential of every computer that the keys need to do what they are intended to do, no exceptions, no excuses! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1247668 Title: NumLock turned off on layout switch To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1247668/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Right now I'm using: gnome-control-center 3.8.5-0ubuntu1~saucy1 and gnome-settings-daemon 3.8.5-0ubuntu11.1 but none of the following makes any difference, as I tested all of these: $ apt-cache policy gnome-control-center gnome-control-center: Installed: 1:3.8.5-0ubuntu1~saucy1 Candidate: 1:3.8.5-0ubuntu1~saucy1 Version table: *** 1:3.8.5-0ubuntu1~saucy1 0 500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnome3-team/gnome3/ubuntu/ saucy/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 1:3.6.3-0ubuntu45 0 500 http://mirror.isoc.org.il/pub/ubuntu/ saucy-updates/main amd64 Packages 1:3.6.3-0ubuntu44 0 500 http://mirror.isoc.org.il/pub/ubuntu/ saucy/main amd64 Packages $ apt-cache policy gnome-settings-daemon gnome-settings-daemon: Installed: 3.8.5-0ubuntu11.1 Candidate: 3.8.5-0ubuntu11.1 Version table: *** 3.8.5-0ubuntu11.1 0 500 http://mirror.isoc.org.il/pub/ubuntu/ saucy-updates/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3.8.5-0ubuntu9 0 500 http://mirror.isoc.org.il/pub/ubuntu/ saucy/main amd64 Packages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1244158 Title: GNOME: Modifiers Only keyboard layout switch have no effect To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1244158/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1245188] Re: Unable to set the physical keyboard LED to show an alternative layout
@Sebastien: You know, the little lights situated just above the number pad that light up when you press Num-Lock, Caps-Lock, or Scroll-Lock. They can be set to indicate when the keyboard is in a non-default layout (well used to be able to, anyway). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1245188 Title: Unable to set the physical keyboard LED to show an alternative layout To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-control-center/+bug/1245188/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
