[Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout in 13.10
@Anton (@85), @Savely (#86) I can't understand why you do not use Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS. What is a reason to use non-LTS Ubuntu release for programming or other non-hobby tasks? IMHO below. In present time many problems come from GNOME fast destruction and simpility/stupidity behavior. GNOME reduces its functionality very fast, and this changes are not tested for all regressions and bugs, this changes are not discussed with gnome-users. So many problems are common for all distros - i.e. Ubuntu 13.10, OpenSuSe 12.3, Fedora 20, Mageia 4 and others will use the same buggy and untested GNOME 3.x. As the most conservative solution we can use CentOS 6.5 (with GNOME 2.28 !! ) or Gentoo (with GNOME 2.32), but this solution is not universal for all users. So If you choose Ubuntu, I recommend to use Ubuntu LTS on all PCs and laptops on which you do real work. For example, in system requirements for Android SDK Google mark Lucid Lynx (10.04, previous LTS) as tested Linux development platform (see http://developer.android.com/develop/index.html). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1226962 Title: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout in 13.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ibus/+bug/1226962/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout in 13.10
@Norbert Ubuntu 12.04 was not more stable then 12.10 or 13.04. It's even not claimed to be more stable by Canonical, as it's just long term support. Many applications of older versions aren't usable for real tasks. I can name some examples. GIMP 2.6 (from 12.04) has no layer groups support, so it was completely useless to open PSD-files. OwnCloud 5.0.4 (also from 12.04) has some deal-breaking bugs and known vulnerabilities, making it completely unusable. And the same for ownCloud client. LibreOffice 1.3 is one more example, it's not usable on some complex files. We use OS not for itself but for applications, so LTS is not a solution at all. In other words we need stable base system and fresh applications, but there is no such a choice for Ubuntu.

Re: [Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout in 13.10
Stable old system even with new applications is not an option for many developers. Cause of old kernel, standard libraries and such. For example, my touchpad won't work on older kernels and many other hardware in newer laptops. I once struggled for substantial amount of time to compile node.js on CentOS cause of old stdlib. It's also much harder to install new versions of Python, Perl, Ruby, gcc on older distributions. And anyway, proposing to not upgrade to stable release to not get severe bugs sounds very strange. 05 дек. 2013 г. 23:11 пользователь Anton Statutov 1226...@bugs.launchpad.net написал: @Norbert Ubuntu 12.04 was not more stable then 12.10 or 13.04. [Bug 1243484] Re: Incorrect handling of orientation when printing PDF files
The problem is caused by the auto rotation done by pdftopdf which makes the pages rotated to print short-edge-first if the printer requires this. If your original page is portrait and you request landscape, pdftopdf rotates it by 90 degrees and after that pdftopdf applies auto rotation and rotates the page by another 90 degrees putting it upside down (180 degrees). Please try the nopdfAutoRotate option: lp -d queue -o landscape -o nopdfAutoRotate /usr/share/cups/data/default.pdf Is this what you are looking for? All PDF files have already defined geometries for each page and the auto-rotation of pdftopdf rotates landscape pages when the printer pulls in the paper only in portrait orientation. So simply sending a PDF file without the landscape option does usually the right thing. The landscape option makes more sense if the input data has no ready layout, like plain text. texttopdf will layout the text on landscape- oriented pages with this option. So why are you using the landscape option in your particular case? So for text files it would make more sense if pdftopdf ignores the landscape option as texttopdf is already doing the job. For PDF files you usually decide in the desktop application whether it should be landscape-oriented, so here pdftopdf applying a landscape option is also not of much sense. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to poppler in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1243484 Title: Incorrect handling of orientation when printing PDF files To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-filters/+bug/1243484/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1243484] Re: Incorrect handling of orientation when printing PDF files
Thanks for the clarifications, and the nopdfAutoRotate option does seem to help somehow. However, I believe the problem is still present for a couple of important reasons. The initial report used PDF files and a generic queue as a way to easily expose the problem, but it affects more than this. I generally agree with you that using landscape with stock PDF files does not particularly happen much. - Most importantly, in most recent Linux distributions that have adopted the PDF workflow, this affects also Postscript jobs, which get converted internally to PDF and then handled by pdftopdf. - This breaks the semantics of the job options, and our customers in turn put the blame on us (providing the PPD driver) when this stops working for queues that previously handled the 'landscape' option consistently for their jobs. The core of the issue here is that in spite of the switch to the PDF workflow, there are still a lot of customers with legacy PS output that needs to be handled consistently, and we expect the core of the print system to not interfere with this whenever possible.

PostScript files are also readily layouted documents as PDF files. So if you create something printable from a desktop app which still sends print jobs in PostScript, you also determine in the app whether the pages are landscape- or portrait-oriented. So on PostScript jobs the landscape option also does not make much sense. And as I said, for plain text landscape should determine the layout used by texttopdf. Can you attach PostScript (or PDF) files where your customers would use the landscape option? And can you tell me why they use the landscape option? Are their printers holding A4 paper to be printed long-edge first? [Bug 1258305] [NEW] Duplicate results of Search files should show corresponding folder somehow
Public bug reported: The new search functionality of Nautilus by ad-hoc searching files when you start typing is loved by some and hated by others - I don't want to discuss this here. But the new search method lacks an important feature: it is not possible to distinguish two files (or folders) that are in different folders. Let me give an example. Create a new folder test123 in your $HOME directory. Create another test123 in Downloads. Now navigate to your $HOME dir and start typing test. Immediately nNautilus shows you the two entries test123 (and maybe others if you have files/folders with similar names). But it is not distinguishable which of the two folders is ~/test123 and which is ~/Downloads/test123. Possible solution: Nautilus should show the folder containing this item as tooltip of the item. [Bug 1243484] Re: Incorrect handling of orientation when printing PDF files
Not to be pedantic, but while this is not very usual (especially for PS code produced by vanilla applications), it is a lot easier for PS code to be more adaptive. The CUPS test page is actually a good example of this. PDF is generally completely constrained by the page dimensions. The main reason this came up is because of acceptance tests that the QA department of one of our customers ran with the latest versions of Linux distributions. They noticed that the behavior for certain PDF and PS files changed from what it used to be, and whether or not this is a practical everyday use, this in turn was interpreted as not conforming to the expected output. And to the extent that the format of the output changed for the same files with the exact same job options, they were technically correct...

The landscape option is a shortcut for the IPP standard option orientation-requested=3 and RFC 2911 (http://tools.ietf.org/search/rfc2911) tells about the meaning of orientation-requested=...: -- This attribute indicates the desired orientation for printed print- stream pages; it does not describe the orientation of the client- supplied print-stream pages. For some document formats (such as 'application/postscript'), the desired orientation of the print-stream pages is specified within the document data. This information is generated by a device driver prior to the submission of the print job. Other document formats (such as 'text/plain') do not include the notion of desired orientation within the document data. In the latter case it is possible for the Printer object to bind the desired orientation to the document data after it has been submitted. It is expected that a Printer object would only support orientations-requested for some document formats (e.g., 'text/plain' or 'text/html') but not others (e.g., 'application/postscript'). This is no different than any other Job Template attribute since section 4.2, item 1, points out that a Printer object may support or not support any Job Template attribute based on the document format supplied by the client. However, a special mention is made here since it is very likely that a Printer object will support orientation-requested for only a subset of the supported document formats. -- Following this, pdftopdf should ignore landscape and orientation- requested and texttopdf and imagetopdf should use it for layouting the job. To server special, size-less PostScript files, the landscape and orientation-requested should also be taken by the pstopdf filter and swap width and length of the page size supplied to Ghostscript for the PS-PDF conversion. [Bug 1243484] Re: Incorrect handling of orientation when printing PDF files
I would tend to agree with your assessment. The cause of the problems right now seem to be some duplication of the handling of these options between the various involved filters, so that should probably be streamlined. For reference, I am attaching the PS test page that was used by our customer to exhibit the issues. It is admittedly handcrafted, so it is not representative of what may be generated by an office application. ** Attachment added: test-tmpl.ps https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-filters/+bug/1243484/+attachment/3923997/+files/test-tmpl.ps -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to poppler in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1243484 Title: Incorrect handling of orientation when printing PDF files To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-filters/+bug/1243484/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

FInally, when we migrate to ubuntu-system-settings this will have to happen anyway. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1257505 Title: Create Unity Control Center so can remain on old GNOME Control Center version To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/activity-log-manager/+bug/1257505/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1258381] [NEW] Rhythmbox is closing randomly
Public bug reported: So... Rhythmbox appeared with this error some time ago. It happens anytime at any random period since its' opened. For example, when I played a song with Rhythmbox one day, it kept itself alive for some time. Some songs later, it just closes and I have to reopen again. In other day, when I tried to play a song, in the first seconds of the song, it closed (both the playback and the window). I noticed that the app may close if the window is open and may close even if its' minimized or playing in the background (playback). I don't remember when I got this bug for the first time, but I remember that Rhythmbox has received at least one upgrade in my Ubuntu. But this upgrade did not solved my problem. It's really annoying; I'm enjoying a song then Rhythmbox closes without notice and just... crashes, leading my fun to an end. Ubuntu has appeared with some bugs recently. I've never experienced bugs in Ubuntu before, but now, they're just popping up from the nothing! (still the best OS). First, I had a bug with the keyboard (which was changing the layout randomly), then I had a problem with the network-manager, which could not receive or send any data to or from the web (happened randomly too). But it seems that those two bugs were fixed, because I upgraded the packages in my Ubuntu, and I saw the keyboard an the connections packages listed in the upgrades (phew!). But Ubuntu still has this annoying bug in Rhythmbox, which as I said, interrupts my fun while I'm enjoying music. Well, I hope that's all Canonical needs from a bug report. If not, you can ask anything needed and I'll try to answer/reply ASAP. Thanks in advance!
