[Bug 1015383] Re: Rhythmbox uses 100% CPU and high IO and then crashes
On 14.04 What I did Launched Rhythmbox from the Launcher. Played a couple of wav files. Closed Rhythmbox with the window's close widget. Looked in the Sound menu to see whether it had made itself persistent. It had. Right-clicked it there. After a long time it opened. (may have played another file here) The machine became very busy, mouse pointer disappeared. Disk light continually on. Opened another tty. During the (very slow) login, a message appeared saying hda1 would be checked on next startup. I ran top. rhythmbox-metadata was taking 29% cpu and 60% memory. Returned to desktop with Ctl-Alt-F7 In the background was the error message. Sorry, the program 'rhythmbox' closed unexpectedly. Your computer does not have enough free memory to automatically analyze the problem and send a report to the developers. Apport was taking 100% cpu but no notification from it appeared. [Bug 1325174] [NEW] please remove libpoppler-private-dev dependency from libpoppler-dev
Public bug reported: After the move of all the libpoppler private headers from libpoppler-dev to libpoppler-private-dev two years ago in Debian, I took care to having all the sources fixed in Debian within the Wheezy freeze. Hence, for almost two years, there were no sources in Debian using the private libpoppler and not build-depending on libpoppler-private-dev. On the other hand, somebody in Ubuntu added the aforementioned dependency to easy a transition, without actually checking it was still an issue, and introducing a circular dependency (libpoppler-private-dev - libpoppler-dev, and libpoppler-dev - libpoppler-private-dev). Please remove this dependency. If there are still sources affected by this (which should not happen to anything being synchronized from Debian), then the solution is to just change the build dependency from libpoppler-dev to libpoppler-private-dev. [Bug 1320157] Re: user space gnome-terminal overflows / file system
this default/standard location /tmp is certainly inadmissible If it is, then I guess you're arguing that /tmp shouldn't exist at all. It exists, it has its purpose, and g-t uses that for that purpose. If /tmp is inadmissible, what would be a better location? The user's home, which potentially lies on a networking filesystem and hence can be magnitudes slower than desired? since it's an obvious welcome hackers breach. What do you mean by this? There are ways to safely open a file there (i.e. without race condition), and g-t does that. Users should be restricted to use their own quotas, even for the g-t. By default, no user quotas are set up for /home or /tmp. Feel free to set up for both (if they are on separate partition – if they are on the same partition then it's one common quota that you need). If there are thousands applications being regularly used on a system which behave similarly, should all of them be audited and reconfigured against such gotchas? Ideally, all of them should respect TMPDIR. If you want your temporary files to be opened in your home, set TMPDIR accordingly and you're done, but please don't claim it should be the default. Gnome-terminal needs a temporary file to store your unlimited scrollback. It opens it exactly at the standard location with can be altered via standard means. Sorry, I don't get you, what's your problem here? Recently however, it has started mounting properly. The Samsung Note however, does not mount at all. [Bug 1325309] [NEW] User can't suspend laptop/control wireless via dbus/systemd-logind if cgroups are disabled in kernel
Public bug reported: This is kind of a long chain, but I think this is where it ends. I custom compile my kernel for battery savings, as I spend lots of time flying. I recently went back to BFS in 3.14 as my scheduler, but immediately ran into lots of problems (it used to give me 15 more minutes on average). The most interesting, that I can't work around is this: I disable cgroups because BFS doesn't use them at all. and when I did, even with the ubuntu linux-source package, I suddenly couldn't put my laptop to sleep, and I couldn't control my network connections anymore. Investigating lead me to discover that start systemd-logind was failing. So, here's my relevant config: rob@kubuntu4:~$ grep CGROUP /boot/config-`uname -r`; sudo start systemd-logind; dmesg |tail -1; ls /sys/fs/cgroup # CONFIG_CGROUPS is not set start: Job failed to start [ 1450.848491] init: systemd-logind pre-start process (10865) terminated with status 32 ls: cannot access /sys/fs/cgroup: No such file or directory the /sys/fs/cgroup folder doesn't exist because CONFIG_CGROUPS isn't set in the kernel. So what is status 32 from the pre-script for systemd- logind ? the problem seems to be in the mount statements in the systemd-logind prestart script: grep mount /etc/init/systemd-logind.conf # this is being done by systemd or mountall usually, but not during if ! mountpoint -q /sys/fs/cgroup; then mount -t tmpfs -o uid=0,gid=0,mode=0755,size=1024 none /sys/fs/cgroup # mounting the cgroup does not work in LXC, there it uses cgmanager if [ ! -e /run/container_type ] ! mountpoint -q /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd; then mount -t cgroup -o nosuid, noexec, nodev, none, name=systemd systemd /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd Testing: sudo mount -t tmpfs -o uid=0,gid=0,mode=0755,size=1024 none /sys/fs/cgroup; echo $? [sudo] password for rob: mount: mount point /sys/fs/cgroup does not exist 32 Rebooting into the stock ubuntu kernel, and I can put my laptop to sleep again, albeit at the cost of a bunch of battery life. I don't understand why cgroups are required for dbus and PolicyKit to be able to allow me to put my laptop to sleep, so I'm filing this as a bug. the systemd pre-script doesn't bother to check if the /sys/fs/cgroup folder even exists, so there's definitely a defensive programming bug in systemd not handling this situation better. currently sudo pm_suspend is an easy workaround for the sleep issue, but my wireless access issue has no workaround. ** Affects: systemd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to systemd in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1325309 Title: User can't suspend laptop/control wireless via dbus/systemd-logind if cgroups are disabled in kernel To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1325309/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1325316] [NEW] Mouse click on a DVD menu item navigates to too deep level
Public bug reported: - Xubuntu 14.04 (fresh installed) - totem: 3.10.1-1ubuntu4 Problem: When I mouse-click on a DVD menu item, it navigates to one extra level deeper than it should. For example, suppose the DVD menu is arranged like that: - [Play All] - [Episodes] - [Episode 1] - [Without Commentary] - [With Commentary] - [Episode 2] - [Episode 3] - ... - [Setup] When I hit [Episodes] item at the top level, it skips the list of episodes, showing the menu for episode 1 (with or without commentary). It should navigate to the list of episodes. With keyboard (arrow keys and Enter key), it navigates correctly. ** Affects: totem (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1325316 Title: Mouse click on a DVD menu item navigates to too deep level To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/1325316/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
