[Bug 1336184] [NEW] USB flash drive keeps writing for quite a while even after Eject completes

2014-07-01 Thread sumedh
Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu 14.04

Nautilus version: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu9.1

Expected: After pressing Eject on a flash drive (formatted with NTFS
-- haven't tried with FAT yet) I expected it to return only after
flushing and unmounting the drive so the drive is completely safe to
remove at that point

What happened: Eject returned after a short while. The drive still
kept writing for a long time. Mount shows the drive still mounted for
the period while the flash drive keeps blinking though df does not
show the drive anymore. Removing the drive at this point results in
partial file write and NTFS filesystem damage (fixable with ntfsfix but
dangerous).

Steps to reproduce:

1) Insert a flash drive (tried with NTFS mounted drive though I believe
FAT will show similar behaviour though latter uses flush mount option
so may not be that prominent)

2) Try copying a large file. For testing use a size that will also mostly fit
into filesystem cache so that real wait for writing is during unmount: dd
if=/dev/zero of=/media/user/drive/test.out bs=1M count=1000
user is the user name and drive the name where drive was mounted by
nautilus as per the label.

3) Eject the drive from nautilus context menu after dd command above
returns.

4) Eject returns shortly. However drive is still writing as seen by the
blinking, or disk throughput in gkrellm, iostat. Also note that mount
still shows the drive as mounted though df and other tools don't.

I have confirmed the same issue exists on all similar file managers
namely nemo and caja. Haven't filed bugs against those yet.

For comparison, the gnome-disks system utility correctly unmounts,
ejects and stops the drive (last one even powers down the drive so the
LED on drive is switched off which one would expect nautilus Eject to
also do) so it doesn't seem to be a bug in udisks2.

** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1336191] [NEW] system monitor update interval resets to zero (0)

2014-07-01 Thread S.O.E. Ansems
Public bug reported:

This is not a lifethreatening bug, but it looks sloppy...

What i did:
1) Start the gnome-system-monitor
2) Select the menu item 'preferences'
3) Observe the value of 'update interval' on any of the three tabs. It is
'0,00' eventhough the interval is set to some other value (e.g. '1,00')
4) Change the value to something that is easy to detect as being different from
the current value. (say '3,00') and close the dialogue.
5) Observe that the value has been accepted.
6) Select the menu item 'preferences' again and ...
7) Observe that the value of 'update interval' is again set to '0,00'.

we just upload the code that disables the module unload, or do you have

[Bug 1335824] [NEW] Evolution crashes on certain operations

2014-07-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm starting a new bug because the previous one mentioning evolution was
back in 2013 with an older version of mint.

I am using evolution 3.10.4 on 64 bit Mint 17 with Mate desktop.

My mail server is running Ubuntu Server 10.04 with Postfix and Dovecot
with maildir.

I have had crashes on two operations:-

1) when creating a new message folder on the server. Evolution crashes
(stops responding). After rebooting the computer and restarting
evolution, I find that the folder was created and all appears to be well
again. This has happened multiple times.

2) when attempting to select a contact to edit. I have only seen this
happen once. I typed in the contact search string and clicked return,
which produced two possible contacts. When I double clicked on the one I
needed to edit, evolution crashed. This was after evolution had been
running for a couple of hours. When I rebooted and tried again, it all
worked.

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2014-07-01 Thread cschramm
Disabling the unload is the best guess yet, although I do not know how
and why the rest of the plugin can still work then. ;) But I can figure
that out afterwards.

(If anybody wants to help with that, please send me the blueman-applet
output of when you successfully connect your audio device using the
1.23-git201406261335-deb version. The best place to discuss this is
probably the upstream ticket: https://github.com/blueman-
project/blueman/issues/64)

@David: If you like I'll push the fix to Debian testing. That's probably
the cleanest way to also get it into Ubuntu, isn't it?

The SMART info for a Samsung 830 SSD (512GB) shows SMART ID #235 as
Good Block Rate. However, according to Samsung documentation, this
value represents Power Recovery Count:

ID # 235 Power Recovery Count
A count of the number of sudden power off cases. If there is a sudden power
off, the firmware must recover all of the mapping and user data during the next
power on. This is a count of the number of times this has happened.

2014-07-01 Thread Chris J Arges
Hello Erick, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-panel into trusty-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
panel/1:3.8.0-1ubuntu12.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See

[Bug 1201128] [NEW] missing icons for .directory files

2014-07-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug by CatKiller (catkiller):

Directory files have been shipped with incorrect Icon= fields. For
example, ActionGames.directory contains Icon=weather-storm.

This should instead read Icon=applications-action (1) which is included
in many icon sets (2), leaving this kind of substitution to the theme
author using symlinks. Including references to these substitutions
directly in the .directory files is an inappropriate and unecessary
kludge which breaks themes, including the default one.

I've only checked the Games .directory files so far, since that is what
I was doing when I encountered the bug, but they all exhibit this
problem. I'm using Ubuntu 13.04, but it's the kind of thing that could
have been sitting undone for a while. It's probably worth checking
whether this bug exists upstream or whether it's been introduced by the
Ubuntu team.

Upon further checking, Bug #421294 is a particular case of this bug,
where the line reads Icon=system-run rather than Icon=applications-
puzzles. From this report and Bug #421695 it seems likely that this bug
was introduced in Karmic.

(1) or similar - I'm not entirely sure on whether this will shake out as
applications-action or applications-games-action; Gnome currently goes
one way and KDE the other but, either way, symlinks are cheap and it can
be sorted out through freedesktop.

(2) Ubuntu's own Humanity icon set includes icons of this form, but they
are not used because of this bug.

[Bug 1336184] Re: USB flash drive keeps writing for quite a while even after Eject completes

2014-07-01 Thread sumedh
Workaround: apart from workarounds involving sync etc from command-
line or always using command-line tools, the only way I have found to
make all the GUI tools behave properly with Eject is to add the sync
mount option.

While an explicit fstab entry can do it, the more user friendly way is
to open the gnome-disks utility, click on gears More action icon after
the drive has been inserted, then Edit Mount Options, then unselect
automatic mount option in the new window, then add sync separated by a
comma after the list of options that are shown in the fourth text box.

One can select /dev/sdb1 or whatever be the case in Identy As select
box instead of the specific USB so that this works for all USB drives,
but then it will not work for drives that are on other locations like
/dev/sdc1. Perhaps one can repeat the same for all such possibiities,
but one cannot be sure to cover all cases or cases where /dev/sdb1 is
not a USB flash drive. This could potentially use the more complex
matching criteria which I was a bit familiar with in the udev rules in
older releases, but I don't know if that still works with the new
infrastructure (perhaps need to look through udisks docs).

Either way adding sync is just a workaround and not the solution to
this problem since adding that potentially loses on a lot of overall
performance benefits of kernel filesystem cache. Proper solution will be
to correctly unmount the drive (e.g. like what udisks --unmount
/dev/sdb1 does) and then eject. Not sure how the software manages to
eject without even unmounting in the first place.

[Bug 1336184] Re: USB flash drive (NTFS) keeps writing for quite a while even after Eject completes

2014-07-01 Thread sumedh
FYI, using FAT32 as filesystem does not cause the issue. As I reported,
mounting FAT32 add the flush mount option which probably avoids the
above issue. I have updated the bug title accordingly. I suspect that
adding the same manually instead of sync as suggested in previous
comment as workaround will work better since sync will write to disk
too often compared to flush. With mentioned dd I got average of
1.6MB/s with sync while 4MB/s withflush or otherwise without
anything on my old USB flash drive. Haven't tried flush with NTFS yet
but from mount man page still does not seem like that it will guarantee
anything. Proper fix remains issuing unmount and waiting for it in
nautilus, nemo, caja.

[Bug 1335017] Re: Precise to Trusty dist-upgrade failure - Dependencies of Trusty's libpango1.0-0 package needs to be updated

2014-07-01 Thread Steve Langasek
Actually, your change of the package name in the bug description clued
me in to the problem. In precise, it's the libpango1.0-0 package which
provides the file. In trusty, it's libpango-1.0-0 that has the
Conflicts - because libpango1.0-0 is a transitional package.

So we need to move the Conflicts: to libpango1.0-0, which is actually
the package that triggers the problem.

I tried the steps in #4. Worked for me.

BUT: In fact I can't confirm nor deny the bug because I use NEMO instead
of NAUTILUS FILES now for some weeks and it is all okay there..

2014-07-01 Thread Steve Langasek
This is not relevant for utopic because it's an upgrade issue from
precise.

** Changed in: pango1.0 (Ubuntu)
   Status: Triaged = Invalid

** Description changed:

+ [SRU Justification]
+ Causes upgrade failures in common desktop configurations, depending on
package upgrade order.
+
+ [Test case]
+ 1. In a precise chroot, enable trusty in sources.list.
+ 2. sudo apt-get install libpango1.0-0
+ 3. sudo update-initramfs -u
+ 4. verify that this fails
+ 5. enable trusty-proposed
+ 6. sudo apt-get install libpango1.0-0
+ 7. sudo update-initramfs -u
+ 8. verify that this succeeds
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ Some risk that moving the versioned Conflicts from one package to another
will cause knock-on effects for calculation of upgrade paths. Otherwise
minimal risk.
+
